Fascinating, absolutely fascinating. What a privilege to see how your style has changed over the years. Thank you for sharing this with us, Tom. It was interesting and helpful to see how you self critique in a positive/possibility exploring way. And encouraging not to give up when it doesn't work.
So glad you enjoyed!! I thing positive and fun critique is key, whilst still doing good analysis ...all about the language we use with ourselves!! :)...thanks so much for a lovely comment and the support!!:)
Tom I think you are very gifted young man.. I love watch you paint birds. I think bold colors behind birds are your boldness coming out..in creativity. I loved last bird.. think you may hard on yourself.. only thing I would do not so dark blue in front. Loved fading wet on wet to right bird gently.
Really helpful to see your process - thanks! One thing that has just stood out to me is that you did a different composition/bird each time. I’m trying to improve and was thinking I needed to redo the same image but think I’m much more likely to get stuck that way!
Wow! What a great job you done learning and exploring your own style I have learned a lot watching you grow as well I think your darks used behind subjects do make them pop.. I will try this technique myself. Don’t be too hard on yourself.. you are doing great! We are our own worst enemies. Thanks again for sharing information.. i understand now I have not had enough dark darks and lighter area. Too much same tones need darks make lights stand out. Thank you! ❤️😊
Brilliant! Tom, your presentation is thought-provoking in the best possible way. It’s a generous spirit who can share their past work, struggles and all. Gratitude and deep appreciation to you! I’m smack dab in the middle of working out some artistic choices, both in flute-playing and in paint, so your discussion was in perfect time. Cheers!
Thank you for such a great and kind comment! Really interesting to hear in relation to music playing too...sooo many similarities across all the creative fields. Which I think is fascinating!!! Happy creating with your choices!! Kind regards, T
Love how you showed how to analyze ones painting and how to work from previous paintings. The last one was really stunning! And how you described evolving and the discord between what you can and what you want to express. I really hot home.
This is so helpful!! You never really get to see how the pros analyze their own paintings and have their own goals to improve on. Thank you. Very relatable 😊
I'm really glad I found your channel! I don't have a similar style to you but your tips are universal and I've started to take notes! I hope your channel grows more and more so people can discover your helpful insights 💜
Tom!! I sooo enjoyed seeing your early art and watching it grow -- such a variety! This has been a fun video. Seeing how the owls evolved was a good demo for working towards the actual vision of the completed work. That last one was really neat -- the eyes!! I must pat you on the back yet again for using really nice colors -- clear, clean. Sure, I tone is donig the work...and I know that we need to gray some hues down sometimes for effect, but I note that you use that technique wisely 😊 Good job!
Thanks so much, Chantel!!:) So glad you enjoyed it. Ha! Yes, I was really happy with the eyes!!...appreciate you noticing the little things;) kind regards, T
This was a gripping and extremely interesting exercise...... It must give you a wonderful sense of achievement to see how you have evolved! Thank you for sharing the process with us. Love your owls......
Thank you so much for your excellent videos. I’m so pleased I discovered you and your excellent teaching style. I think you’re the best teacher on TH-cam! Much appreciated 👍
I love your birds🤩. I’ve been painting for one year and am very much enjoying painting birds. My husband is an expert ornithologist and so I want to be true to the subject’s markings, colors, and pose, while painting in a somewhat loose style.
Thank you Wendy! Great to hear you are loving your painting so far. I can appreciate the need for accuracy with expert ornithologist around!!;) I do think a combination of faithfulness to subject, accuracy but loosely painted is my favourite style!!
Thanks for that great video! There seems to be a huge change in your artistic voice after 2012. I’ll be interested to know how that happened and what triggered it.
Thanks so much! There was indeed...I realised I was painting what I thought I should paint and started moving to what I wanted to paint, which was actually more traditional representational work :) it coincided with a few months spent working another artists studio where I learnt the foundations of oil painting. That was my springboard into completely new direction :)

Your analysis and follow up painting process is very helpful!
Thanks you. So glad it helps!
This was very interesting Tom. And I will be replaying it a few times and make changes in my own art work as a result. Thank you very much.
Very helpful. I needed to be reminded about what I can learn from “failures” and how to improve on my next attempts. Thank you, Tom!

Thanks so much for the great comment! Aren't we just. A fine line between useful critique of our own work versus being too hard on ourselves! T
