So a lot of people have been curious about the mop brushes, and I figured I should highlight them! They're Art Secret squirrel brushes and the large one I used is a size 6. They soak up water well, and aside from a few hairs falling out when they're still new, they're pretty durable. You can purchase them at their own site or at Aliexpress. You might find slightly cheaper variants of them at other stores on Aliexpress if you dig around. Just search "squirrel mop brush" in the search bar, look for the black ones with orange banding, and see what the reviews say. I've used both - Art Secret branded ones and others - and the quality is similar. Besides that, you can find all the materials I used listed in the description. Much love! - Kathy Aliexpress store: m.aliexpress.com/store/1266879?trace=store2mobilestoreNew Art Secret site store: artsecretshop.com/products/handmade-squirrels-brush?variant=17048932417625
Been using my Art Secret mop set for about four years now... excellent quality for the (then) price. Recently got the shock of my life when I looked to renew them 😲😲😲... damned Covid!
Just in case you'd not had the luxury of hearing it aloud before (and why should you, tbf!) the 'e' in Schmincke is voiced. As if it's Schminck *_-ah._* And the 'bein' in Holbein, rhymes with sign - I know, German is weird, I am very sorry! 🇩🇪 Pronunciation to one side, your layering and texture building is breath-taking, and your brushwork masterly. The portrait reminds me very much of Liv Tyler, and your colour pairings in all three studies are a delight, thank-you! 🙏🏼
It amazes me that the start of a watercolor piece can look like just a big blob, like someone spilled something. Then, slowly it takes shape and you sit there like 😲
You’re clearly a talented artist, and I enjoy watching you paint. What sets your videos apart, however, is your articulate description of the process, materials, and evident passion for what you do.
Yeah they look good together as Payne's Grey can be mixed with burnt sienna and ultramarine blue (2 parts blue, 1 part sienna). So they're already "related" colours. 😊 And if you reverse that mix (2 parts sienna, 1 part ultramarine), you get a burnt umber. All such yummy delicious colours, I love ultramarine blue mixed with raw umber too, such a nice smoky blackish. 😍
Ahh, you're a writer and storyteller as well as a passionate artist! This video took me to surprising places and feelings. Never have I watched a watercolor tutorial that was so sensory and aesthetically pleasant. You've earned yourself a new subscriber by being your lovely self, for your rich education, and wonderfully fleshed out paintings! You are incredibly talented, as well as armed with skillful techniques you've undoubtedly practiced many, many times over. Blessings on all your endeavors!
‘We should all aspire to stuff foliage down our clothing’ best advice yet! I bet the world would be a better place if we did that, rather than hate on each other. Bloody love it! 🧡🧡 copped a follow just for that line (oh and also the amazing art and poetic commentary)
The way you speak about the subtleties of colors, as if each shade is a repository of memories, emotions, and sense of place, really resonates with me. Love, love, love the color combination, and all the info about what goes into making the paints and how it contributes to the different results. ❤
I agree wholeheartedly! I can tell you are also an artist, writer, and probably an avid reader, as am I. This video took me to surprising places and feelings. Never have I watched a watercolor tutorial that was so sensory and aesthetically pleasant.
Kathy, were you inspired by The Little Prince when naming your TH-cam channel? I love the name and think of the aviator and little prince when I visit your channel.❤️ I’m greatly impressed with your skill and your seeming comfort and ease while working with the fluidy pigments. I agree with another commenter, you are unusually skilled at describing and explaining what is going on with the pigment and paper. Plus, your voice is wonderfully soothing. Thank you so much for sharing.
Yes 100%!!! I'm so happy someone caught it! It's one of my fav stories of all time (and I have far too many art prints and collectibles lounging around my apartment). Thank you for your kind words 😊
I thought this, as well! My dad gave me Le Petite Prince when I was about 6 (we're not French lol) and somehow, the illustrations and book itself opened up an even more rich and vivid imagination in me. I've loved it ever since then. ❤
I usually avoid Paynes grey because it is so opaque but seeing the beauty you create by pairing it with burnt Sienna has made me rethink. I can't wait to try it out, thank you.
Hi! One thing I tried to help me understand pigmentation in individual paints was swatching them in a spectrum of one pan to another that was complementary. So maybe try Swatches going from pure Payne's grey to pure burnt Sienna with as many transitions as you can to get a feel of your paints! Hope that helps you, art is a gift!
You absolutely cracked me up with the ascribing to wear foliage comment. I love your style and color mix here, can't wait to get out these paints and play!. This is the first video of yours that I've seen, but I am hooked and subscribed! PS. Years ago for 4-H I organized the kids to perform a play where they could all take part, called The Flower-Town Ball. Yes, all the kids were bedecked in leaves & flowers. Growing out of their shoes, ears, hair & any other gap, crease or crevice we could fill. It was great fun and as soon as I started laughing about ascribing to wear foliage I could see them kids, my 6 & 30 friends, all trailing vines and grass across the stage. Thanks for a great afternoon,
I think I'll subscribe and stay awhile, you are soothing to listen to not all hyper and screamy ( is that a word? Well it should be) I love the old sepia paintings, I have one framed, done by my grandmother in the 1920's I love crows and old rusty stuff, tree trunks and nature. And now I'm an old old thing.😳
And this is why we dont need so many colours! Your work is amazing. I enjoyed your poetical descriptions too. The algorithm popped this up as a suggestion and I am so appy it did. You got a new sub!
Your video was so interesting to watch, I love that you included the swatches of the color combinations from the several brands ! It's really helpful to see how each of them produces different mixes depending on their pigment composition. I really liked how you explained everything, that was relaxing to watch ! 😊
Thank you for this video. So nice to see something that has feeling and intelligence when so much around us now is quick or shallow. And yes, let’s stuff foliage in all the places! I also love the combination of Winsor & Newton payne’s grey and gamboge.
Thank you for this informative video comparing the various paints. Your resulting paintings are great, love the tones. And you have a very pleasing voice for narration. 👍
@@boxesofsheep You're most welcome! You need not be self-conscious, your voice is quite complementary to your art. 🙂 And btw, I have subscribed to your channel. 👍 Good luck! 🖌🎨
Simply beautiful in every way. The paintings, your voice, the story, and the colors truly make magic. Thanks so much for sharing and like others, I would love to see your work in other pairings as well. Thanks so much for sharing.
Have all of these Burnt Sienna and Daniel Smith is my favorite as well. When you speak of the nostalgia of that shade i almost cried, it was so beautiful.. I dont know where ive been but im a nut for TH-cam art and im so happy i found your channel. Thank you for sharing yout words and skills.
I really enjoy your descriptions of how these colors make you feel. I have always loved watercolor because the loose, fadedness of paint reminds me of a memory or a dream... So does your way of describing these colors. Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful! For me, the flowers in the boot really showed how well these colours work together. And the joke about us all needing flowers in our clothes! I needed that laugh.😃
Hello Kathy. Thank you so much for presenting this. This colour combination really caught me once I saw your vid. I am very much into autumn etc. as you described so eloquently. My home is done in these colours (roughly!) and they are colours that really make my heart skip a beat. I will try this combination and if I ever get a kudo on one of my paintings, I will tell people I got this from Kathy S. Keep up the amazing work. And your own humility aside, all 3 of your paintings in this vid were spot on. Even the bird, that you criticized. Be kind to yourself. Keep on wetting pages! Best, John.
I enjoyed this video immensely. Now I'm looking for some references photos that grab my interest for this project. My only complaint is I really would have enjoyed seeing the 3rd demo as well. Thank you for the inspiration, and have a wonderful day.
Your aesthetic is amazing! I loved the story you created with your bird painting, that could be fleshed out into a whole book or graphic novel. Thank you for sharing your vision with us, it's something this world could use a lot more of. Your voice is so calming. Good luck growing your channel. 🦋
You made me smile so hard, thank you. The crow was a tiny snippet of a story idea that I decided to paint rather than write! I adore crow stories and characters and I'm forever trying to will more of them into existence
I just love your passion in describing the different things you like about each brand of burnt sienna. So evocative and lovely! This is my first video of yours but it definitely won't be my last:)
Your videos ...(after watching this one I had to watch others) are beautiful and very informative! Thank you! I began painting probably before you were born...and have studied through the years with some very fine Artist and Teachers...but we never stop learning and I am so grateful for Creatives like you who share their skills with the community!...I too love this combo of paints and all that they can produce! In addition to these two together I also love the combination of Sepia and Indigo...So much can be achieved with either of these combinations! Again thank you for your wonderful video...from the music to your choices in editing...it was so refreshing to watch! ...Blessings, Rus from Pennsylvania ❤️🤓🖌🎨
This video is stunning, descriptive, clean and creative in its simplest form. Just two colours. Wow the results are superb. Now subscribed to see what comes next. Thanks for sharing. ❤❤
I just discovered your channel and am so glad. I have binge watched all your videos I could find and hope you will make many more. I echo all the many laudatory comments you have received - your voice and the calm feeling it induces. I appreciate the focused comments about the paints and your process, and especially that there is no folksy chit chat and unnecessary talk. The music is so well chosen. This video is my favorite of all I have seen and I hope you will make more that similarly explore different limited color combinations. You are so very talented. Are you a Patreon artist? I would love to support your work monetarily through that kind of subscription. I’m looking forward to seeing so much more from you.
Thank you so much Marilyn! I'm glad you found your way here 😊 I don't currently have a Patreon but it's something I can definitely consider in the near future!
Thank you young lady. This is by far the most interesting use of two colors to make three paintings in detail. Paynes Grey is typically a mixture of Ultra Marine blue and Burnt Sienna. I would think the manufacturer probably uses their own mixtures of Burnt Sienna and Ultra Marine Blue to make their version of Paynes Grey. Enough said on my part. I just needed to make a point I guess. I have been painting with watercolors since the early 1990’s and you’ve done a remarkable job with this video. Do some more of these videos and watch your talent grow with many new subscribers as well. I have not purchased a tube of Paynes Grey, I make my own on the pallet with Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue.
Payne's grey is a dark blue-grey colour used in painting. Originally a mixture of iron blue (Prussian blue), yellow ochre and crimson lake, Payne's grey now is often a mixture of blue (ultramarine, phthalocyanine, or indigo) and black, or of ultramarine and burnt sienna. I do not use black in any of my tube paints.
This was an awfully snotty comment. Maybe you need to read things or think a little harder before you post. You started out calling her young lady as if you needed to inform her and then it just became worse. Honestly, think twice.
That was the most amazing video I've seen since starting my journey in art this past year. You have an amazing mind and I love how you shared what you see, know and feel. Thank you.
The whole process of your paint session was absolutely mesmerizing! Such beautiful work! My experience with watercolors is limited and quite disappointing! Nevertheless, I truly enjoy and appreciate watching someone like you perform magic with them! Thank you so much for sharing!❤
Wow.. you are amazing. And these limited colour palette videos are awesome. Can you please do a slow real time version of sketching and watercolouring video of one these paintings using your limited colour palette? Thank you for sharing ❤
Thankyou so much for your beautiful 2 colour paintings. You make them look unbelievably easy but I find them unbelievably difficult to get right. I kept recognising your calming voice. Are you that beautiful lady who makes - mostly by hand - the amazing dresses and other garments from the past if so how extraordinary talented are you?
breath taking. I love your confidence, whitch is key, your so truthful when admitting you would of used different colour, ""its not the end of the world, "" love that ...... oh your door may need some oil.😊
Wonderful and communicative as always. I admire your combination of painterliness and control of the medium. DS are a lovely brand but I’m a sucker for Schminke especially their lush, creamy pastels. The word is German of course and means Paint or Makeup. That ‘e’ on the end is articulated so we phonetically get Shhmink-air with an almost unpronounced R at the end. Good old German.
wow! Totally on point for me... I recently gave up on Neutral Tint, but recently took it back up as an experimental "gray + color" approach... and have found some wonderful and unexpected color interactions... after your video I also tried on my earth tones (burnt sienna and yellow ochre) and have found more "oh wow" surprising color interactions. Thank you for this timely video!
I'm so glad to hear!! It's such a fun process - finding new combinations and being startled by how they turn out. And I love the gray + color pairing, too 😊
@@boxesofsheep - Indeed.. and one of the benefits I carried over from a Graphic Design career that a neutral (pure gray or a subtly tinted/shaded gray) can really make the primary colors pop when placed side by side (without mixing)... though the watercolor neutral tinte auto-mixing (what I like to call it) sure does play nicely with any color I am working with... anyway, thanks again for the video! I hope you can do more along these "two-color" (limited pallette) experiments. Take care... :)
*wow...huge fan of muted earthtone colors personally and the texturing techniques i use for paper would greatly benefit from these combinations....thank you*
This is a beautifully narrated video, interesting medium, gives me food for thought for artwork in the future....I think it's my favourite art video...🧡💚💙
Beautiful work. I love using Indathrene blue (PB60) with burnt sienna or quinacrinone rust (PO48) for a similar moody mix. Adding a touch of quin gold to this mix is beautiful too.
Ill try that now! I usually use Ultra + Burnt Sienna for limited palette but I also like other PR101 like Indian Red with Ultra. I love quin rust, particularly M.Graham.
I’d love to see you remake this video with burnt sienna and ultramarine, you can get the darks you like in paynes grey but you also have the muted blue/orange fabulousness to add. Nice vid. Best to you🌸
Thank you for this inspirational video. Lovely time watching you paint! I too prefer WN Paynes grey and DS B. sienna too. Palete staples. WN Paynes is a wild child, which is what I love about it! And have every size of Art Secret brushes. After years of hunting for the perfect brush, they fit the bill. Just enough body and spring. Don't hold too much water. And the price is right. I highly recommend them.
Two of my favorite colors. And they make a wonderful black when combined. You’re very talented. I’m going to try water colors. Worked in oils then acrylics , the later of which I still use for paintings on canvas. TH-cam videos are inspiring me to try watercolors.
Really excites me, how much you can do with just two colours. Schmincke btw has another colour called Transparent Sienna wich is made out only of PR101. I think, this colour is much closer to W&N Burnt Sienna.
Such an intriguing painting approach. It is magical what happens when just a few colors mingle together. Thank you for generously sharing your creative process and providing a valuable learning opportunity for many artists. Wishing you a truly wonderful day ahead.
Wow. The portrait and crow came out stunning!! What an incredible color combo. Thanks so much for this video. Also loved the swatch comparison at the beginning ❤
Wow! These are all wonderful! I really love the limited palette concept and it really helps to understand your colors better (newbie). I look forward to creating the same combos in my journal for reference. I definitely get stuck when trying to combine colors and this seems like a great way to get aquainted with these combos. I also get stuck on finding the shadows ~ would love more details of how you find them along your loose style of painting. Looking forward to more inspiration ~ thanks for sharing your amazing talent ~ I could watch you paint all day.
Paynes Grey is made from Ultramarine Blue and Black. Therefore you are actually mixing three pigments. I suggest you should try combining burnt sienna and ultramarine blue. Classic combination. Similar effects but much more beautiful.
You are such a beautiful artist to watch and also listen to, relaxing and so informative at the same time. Just found your site and definitely subscribing.
I really enjoyed all that you bring of yourself in this tutorial....your very interesting knowledge, your way of thinking, who you are as an artist, and your terrific skill. I subscribed!
Came across this video by chance (now subscribed). One of my three favourite watercolour combinations brought together, analysed, described and applied in such understated beauty. Anyone that genuinely loves this medium would totally understand this video and love it also. Thank you.
Wow, I'm inspired and amazed after watching your video. I confess a lot of times I watch videos "on the background" but your story telling captivated me, I had to watch, I had to put the video on full screen and give it all my attention. It was not only great art you created but also a whole atmosphere around it. Thank you for that, I'm now a subscriber and more importantly an inspired artist 🥰
That was insane!!! I love it!!! I never even thought about buying Paneys Grey... Now the Pan is getting barely dry. I will need a new one soon. That color ist Like crack!
Absolutely stunning. I love this combination too. This is the first time I've seen a portrait that made me seriously consider trying one. Interestingly, I loved my first Burnt Sienna, from Van Gogh (serious amateur grade if I can put it that way--student grade but good). It's a PR 101 paint. And I love the Payne's Gray from Dick Blick, a store brand. It has quite a blue undertone. So at the extremes (at full strength, no mixture of the other) they are further from each other and more vivid than some B. Sienna and Payne's. Yet they make the neutralized mixes. Thank you so much for this demonstration.
Before I came across Van Gogh's Burnt Sienna, I wasn't particularly fond of Burnt Siennas. I may have finished over 2 half pans and one tube in last one year alone whereas my Pbr7 from various brands have been sitting there for more than 3 years!

Is Payne's Grey typically made of Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna? I avoid it because it may include a bone/ivory black.
@@toobad41 My Payne's is from M. Graham and is a mixture of Ultramarine Blue and Ivory Black. I like it a lot.
To get a tube mix of Burnt Sienna (PBr7) and Ultramarine Blue (PB29), there’s Jane’s Grey by Daniel Smith. Only the two pigments - no black.
Beautiful work. Your guidance is inspiring. Your voice is easy on the ears. I will be sharing this with my watercolor students.
Wonderful video! Thank you so much.
breath taking.
I love your confidence,
whitch is key,
your so truthful when admitting you would of used different colour,
""its not the end of the world, "" love that ......
oh your door may need some oil.😊
Thank you! A whole new level of teaching.
*wow...huge fan of muted earthtone colors personally and the texturing techniques i use for paper would greatly benefit from these combinations....thank you*
Say Payne’s grey and you have my attention! Loved this video💕 So much depth from just two colors. Thanks for sharing.
¡Gracias! Bellísimas tus pinturas. Mis ojos y mi alma se llenaron de magia.
You're very kind! Gracias!!☺❤
This is a beautifully narrated video, interesting medium, gives me food for thought for artwork in the future....I think it's my favourite art video...🧡💚💙
Thanks to TH-cam algorithms, I found this gem! More two color combinations would be welcome in your talented hands.
Me too
Thank you! I'm glad this is something so many people enjoy. I loved doing it, and more will definitely come in the future 😊
I love your painting! And the use of those colours! I’m going to try using that combo! And what an idea, flowers in boots!
I’d love to see you remake this video with burnt sienna and ultramarine, you can get the darks you like in paynes grey but you also have the muted blue/orange fabulousness to add. Nice vid. Best to you🌸
Two of my favourite colours and you’ve created magic with them!
Great video and beautiful work. I can't wait to see more 😄
Very nice. When I first learned watercolors burnt sienna and payne's Grey is what I started with. Thank you for sharing.
These colour combinations are sooooo satisfying. The y are enchanting. I have always loved earthy hues. :-)
Thank you 🙏! This is so beautiful and inspiring. What a wonderful artist you are!i love the hair detail.
Two of my favorite colors. And they make a wonderful black when combined.
You’re very talented. I’m going to try water colors. Worked in oils then acrylics , the later of which I still use for paintings on canvas. TH-cam videos are inspiring me to try watercolors.
What a beautiful explication and interesting technique. Thanks, it's a pleasure to watch the video.
Really excites me, how much you can do with just two colours. Schmincke btw has another colour called Transparent Sienna wich is made out only of PR101. I think, this colour is much closer to W&N Burnt Sienna.
Your paintings are beautiful as much as the color's combination. Same colors on your profile's avatar. Thank you for sharing.
You’re both an artist and a storyteller. Burnt sienna is my most favorite color and I admire it all that surrounds me. Beautiful work! ❤
Beautiful. Those shoes are something else. Simply outstanding!
i really loved your style.. and your videos are soo satisfying.. fresh and beautiful 🌻
I really like the bird and branch, the color combinations are so interesting. I think sometime a limited color scheme is more impactful.
Gorgeous paintings and very informative. Thank you for sharing 😊
Very nice perspective and stories, how you describe your process sets you apart from other painting videos.😊
I could watch you paint all day. This was so inspiring and informational. I learned a lot.
Simplicity seems to me the epitome of sophistication. Thank you for sharing!
Beautifully made video. Your pictures are stunning.
Love that you show samples of different brands of the colors, please make more videos like this :)
Absolutely love the video and such amazing colors. I’m always way to scared to lose my sketch to early on.
The bird is my favorite! Thank you!
I really enjoyed all that you bring of yourself in this tutorial....your very interesting knowledge, your way of thinking, who you are as an artist, and your terrific skill. I subscribed!
Paynes Grey has always been a favorite to work with. I can't wait to try a PG painting paired with Burnt Sienna. This color combination is gorgeous.
fantastic video and gorgeous paintings. just love this color combo!
Thank you so much for this very informative video! I had no idea how different they all are. Keep doing these!
Never would have thought about these two together. Amazing. Thank you for sharing.
By my reckoning, it’s possible to capture the four seasons with these two colours alone. Nice work.
This is such a cool video! I subscribed because of this. Hoping for more videos like this or anything related to traditional art
That was insane!!! I love it!!! I never even thought about buying Paneys Grey... Now the Pan is getting barely dry. I will need a new one soon. That color ist Like crack!
It absolutely is!! Hope you have fun with it 😊
I’m glad you’re having success here on TH-cam because this is great. Students absolutely need to learn pigments etc if they want to improve their work
I thought the portrait had a nice psychological theme to it as well
Absolutely stunning.
