Simple truth , 'A confident line always looks right, a hesitant line always looks wrong ' a cartoon face with 5 lines often looks more accurate than an amateur painter trying to get 'realism'
🙏🏼 HOW REFRESHING that you answer the question in the VERY FIRST SENTENCE! Appreciation for that fact alone-that you got straight to the point and didn’t do the usual infuriating tease (which makes me instantly click away)-influenced me to watch the whole video. And it didn’t disappoint. Thank you thank you thank you. Subscribed ✅
I actually always skip the first few minutes. Thanks for pointing this out it's so refreshing when a video doesn't make me hunt around for the actual point.
As a sculptor trying to learn and improve my oil painting skills, your reference to clay fruit models have inspired me to make some giant steel still life fruit. Love getting unexpected inspiration! Thanks for the lesson, too.
@lb10003 I place my used linseed rags in an old metal, air tight paint can. My solvent rags go in a separate air tight metal can. I use non cotton painters rags for both. I let them dry out in the cans, then drop them off at the hazardous waste area at the dump as if they were paint or old deck stain.
@@lb10003 am pretty certain there is a place in the community somewhere that has a combustible disposal center? I know auto-zone has vats you can get rid of your oil there. I take mine to a friend with a shop but I bought a reciprocal that is red and has a foot pedal it is an actual industrial shop container for the disposal of combustible items. You can get one on Amazon . Then I heard Some people soak them in a bucket of water until they dispose of them I guess that’s the safe thing to do? . For the left over paint I just went and got an unused paint can’t and with any globs I put it in there and reseal it ( in hopes 😂to make black or even a grey at another time) Not tying to take over anyone’s post just trying to help and share what’s seems to work for me.
Agree 100%! I paint loose bold pet portraits, and I definitely use, and always have used this technique in a different way, I actually squint, and blur the reference to capture shapes rather than getting caught up in a nose or eye or detail. Thanks you for this awesome way to describe this way of painting!
I am getting better at animals and they are what I really want to paint, but I reeeeally struggle when the animal is multiple colours like black and white or brown with white patches, I can't seem to get the light and shade right, any tips?
Something that helps me a ton with this (which you demonstrated when showing the blurry flower reference image) is unfocusing my eyes when looking at a subject and painting the blocky, blobby shapes. I used to fixate on really small details to the point I’d have a really small detailed section with essentially nothing else around it, which overwhelmed me to the point of quitting pieces. Learning to paint the basic shapes of everything first was awesome and I actually started getting paintings done because of it!
Glad u finally understand how to paint better...all is basically shapes and layers. Just keep trusting the process. At least that's what I keep telling myself when I start to freak out lol
I'm a selftought painter.Your instructions are so precious and refreshing.Demistyfaying the art basics and making painting so atractiv to me again.Im so ready to explore a new dimensions of painting again. Thanks for your videos.💥👍👍👍
Wow! I just learned a lot more about writing than I ever have before. I mean, not how to do it, but how to do it better. I understand plot points and lines now. It's the same thing. Find the big structure. For that you need the light and dark (reasons, motivations, tempers) and then you start chipping away at the blockiness by adding in detail. Lovely!
I think most people know about starting with bolder shapes and then moving on to details, but you put that advice in a very intuitive way. I finally understand why sketches that only have curves do not look convincing, especially with shading without edges.
This came up in my suggested videos tonight; I've just binged about 5 others. I graduated best portfolio with a Bachelor's degree in Illustration in 2008, have worked as a free-lance artist and concept artist for over 13 years in the video game industry. I've had wonderful painting teachers. Have produced some technically well-executed oil paintings while in college. But since graduating I haven't picked up a paintbrush; I feel like I'm stuck. A blank canvas gives me anxiety. Conforming/appeasing professors in order to pass a class stripped all the creativity out of art for me. Comparing my work to other artists. Thinking every work I produce has to be a marketable, finished piece. Doubting my abilities when something didn't turn out exactly as I'd envisioned it. It all paralyzed me artistically for years. But after watching these videos where he explains the process in such an effortlessly tangible way...painting suddenly seems comfortable again. I just bought some oil paint and a canvas pad. I can't even express how grateful I am to this amazing person who's inspiring so many people
Loved this story. I’ve been stuck too for a few Covid years. The world went so downhill that I lost all enthusiasm for painting as it seemed so trivial suddenly. Hoping to get some joy back and start up again
Thanks Chris, This is one of the best tutorials I've ever watched. My problem has always been that I get lost in detail, right from the start. In the end everything looked flat and round. This tutorial really helps me be more strategic with my paintings. I have to admit I admire the old style advertising paintings because of the exact fact that they have this blocky appeal. A great example is the Erik Henningsen advertising for Tuborg beer.
My goodness!!! What a fantastic gorgeous peaces of advices that you crumbled and packed beautifully in a so short video! You are incredible!!! I will see this video numerous times again and again! So worth it!!! I am feeling really inspired and you helped a tone with your expertise and advices. Congratulations!!! I’m so grateful! Sending you much love! ❤
This is one of the MOST important tools I've learned. Not only does it improve your use of light and shadow but it often gets me past that paralyzed stage at the start of some projects where you sometimes just don't know where to begin. It helps you turn that mental image into something you can work with. Definitely subscribing and following this channel.
4:38 This is definitely important! I've been learning about this with drawing too. Careful observation is important, but design is part of the process too!
I've been an airbrush Artist for 40 years and you broke this down so simply. Kudos I learned a few new tricks. you got a subscriber. paint to live, live to paint, and if you say it I'll spray it!
Thank you! Its so useful. I reached a plateau in my painting. Although most were “pretty good”, I couldn’t get better. Took classes, expensive workshops from great local artists, flew to a art workshop in Italy and read a few more books. Very little improvement from being pretty good, even selling some, to where I longed to be! I couldn’t stand it anymore. I’d start a painting and within a half hour, just didn’t care. I stopped, got depressed and hadn’t picked up a brush for at least five years. I told my friends, sure, I can paint, but I just can’t SEE! I can’t do this anymore. Discouraged, I walked away from painting. THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED! I feel like I can finally see again! OMG I feel like I can see objects in a new way. THANK YOU. Thank you! I’ll watch everything you post on TH-cam. If you teach, I’d love to come for some classes etc. Oh! Did I say, THANKS!
As someone who has challenged themselves to learn to paint a bit to be a bit more creative this was the best advice I’ve seen on TH-cam and you gave the main advice instantly. Thank you.
Coming across this video made my ENTIRE DAY. I have plateaued and lost some motivation with painting, I have been thinking the only way to improve is to sign up for a long/expensive art program, but the algorithm did me a huge favour today in recommending this video. Thank you. Can't wait to follow along and sing up for some of your courses too.
Wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing and explaining your blocking techniques in a simplified, comprehensive and enlightening manner. Oh, to be such an artist as you are! ❤❤❤ xx
This is so incredibly helpful! I’ve been painting for years and am just starting to sell my art.. all these videos on TH-cam seem to say the same things that I’ve already tried and I feel like this is what I’ve been missing! Thank you!
I did the exact same thing: carving blocks of wood into fruit shapes and painting them so students could see the value changes as the sides moved away from the light source. I also taught this technique in life drawing. Very effective! Nice job.
Your advice is always so clear and your demonstrations reinforce your advice so well, it makes your videos a pleasure to watch - and I know I'm going to learn something. Thanks for all the great lessons
thank you for answering your own question in the first thirty seconds! it actually made me want to keep watching much more than if id been skipping around to find where you get to the point.
This is so paradigm shifting, one has to ask why it isn't talked about in most beginner tutorials. I had to subscribe and comment. I behove you to do a whole series on these sorts of "actually clever yet easy" tricks to improve your paintings, please. Good day to you.
you are my favorite art teacher!! i am nearly entirely self-taught (took drawing/painting throughout high school but that's about it for traditional art) and your tips are so helpful and you're very concise when you provide direction! i had stopped painting for some time but i've been getting back into it and watching your videos has given me new inspiration and useful tools to continue to improve. thank you for your videos!! (won't be long until i'm on your patreon i'm sure!)
Cool video! When I first started drawing, I was instructed to feel the reality of the subject. The goal being that reality is absolutely obtainable. It's not. I've since learned, it's much better to see behind the reality and see the illusion you're making.
i've known about this technique for years but i've always ignored it because i get my stuff done anyways but now i wanted to try it for real and your vid was the perfect first hit and got me the info i needed. thx. keep painting.
I'm so glad I found this channel. I tried working with acrylics and they r just not for me, I am a beginner at oil painting and you help me so much. Thank you!
I just happened across this video and decided to try the technique on a landscape painting I am working on. It is a picture of a river with lots of river rocks. The rocks were looking way to smooth and unrealistic. This technique totally transformed my painting and fixed the problem. I will definitely be using it from now on! Thank you so much!
I am so grateful!!! I needed you right now😭😭😭 God bless you🙏 I have a better understanding. Not only that, you brought back memories from my grid paper portrait assignment to paint face in performing arts high school.
Wow. Just wow. Painting has been seeming quite intimidating to me, but this video really clicked with me and makes me excited to begin!!! I’ve watched yours and others’ videos for over a year now, but this makes me feel ready to get started!!! Now it doesn’t feel so intimidating!! Thank you!
Great advice. I am always fussing the details and need to literally step back, hold the brush near its end and makes bigger strokes and block forms and values.
Perfectly explained! Makes so much sense and allows me to focus on the overall shape and light, without getting overwhelmed with details when I am starting a piece. Thank you!
Your so inspiring! Your art work is improving sooo much! It brought tears to my eyes! So happy for you. Your a great teacher too but real and generous of heart! Thank you.
Great video. My art teacher John Crowe from EB said something that helped me. He said if you have a hard time drawing/painting fingers, noses, anything etc. Don't look at it like it is fingers or a nose, just paint the lines. It really helped me and it sounds like the same thing your teaching, but in using color. Hopefully this makes sense. GOD BLESS EVERYONE
omg finally someone actually teaching how to approach painting with colours. i couldn't figure it out. also idk why I'm scared of sharpness. I like my art cute and round. but yes I understand now sculpt then smooth. thank you. I'm going to continue using your approach
The most excellent tutorial and so succinctly narrated. I have waited A WHOLE LIFETIME to pick up this technique. Prior to this I used the shape within the shape to work across the top to th bottom, For the outline I turned the picture upsidedown and pretended to be a small boat traversing slowly around the edge of a shore, stopping to change tack at directional drifts. The method of yours is an eye opener. Thanks for the very valuable tip. Rosie Hoy New Zealand

Oooh! This is good. I am sick of teachers that loll around pontificating about the type of TEA they are drinking before they start painting, etc. By instinct, I have started blocking out my paintings but wondered if I was doing it "right." Glad to see there is some basis for it. Your work is good, so I'm taking your word for it. Also subscribing.
anyone else kinda just mesmerized by the mixing of colors on his palette? I like watching the colors start as dabs, than gradually over time blended, and merging into each other :)
Great! Thanks! I actually have a very blocky style, one stroke block type. I love to do that but this got my into thinking perhaps I could add details later instead of stopping there? I have kind of figured I dont have the talent for tgat so I stop. Do a lot horses and icelandic nature.
Thank you for creating this awesome video and sharing the unique inner experience that we express through art. It is truly amazing to witness how you work on yourself and develop. You are doing great, and keep creating and sharing so we can all help each other uplift our artistic spirit.
This way of thinking is incredibly helpful; I can’t wait to try it. I often get bogged down in the microcosm of detail when I should pull back and get the macrocosm squared away. Thank you.
Thank you for your videos, they help me think differently about how to start a painting,.Blocking the shapes and working from there builds up my paintings now. 🖼

THIS.

7:55 ............I'd give him a C + on that digital art.
No problem at all. You're welcome!
Hey, can you do a video on the proper storage, clean up and disposal of oil paints, thinners and mediums? Would be very helpful.
And how do you dispose of rags/paper towels soaked with linseed oil?
@lb10003 I place my used linseed rags in an old metal, air tight paint can. My solvent rags go in a separate air tight metal can. I use non cotton painters rags for both. Heard one good instructor say, "If you want perfect realism, consider getting into photography instead. You're painters."

You have helped me more than any other youtube instruction on my initial approach to simplifying how to proceed on my mental painting start up.

You are such a gifted art instructor and artist!
Thank you. I would never have thought of it this way on my own. I'm going to try it on my work.

Still in the first 5 years of painting and I found this extremely helpful. I appreciate the lesson and hope to get some weight to things.
Can you do a video on the plaster planal fruit because it's a great learning tool and a set of 3 Kami Mendlik is $120.00
Painterly look is attractive and I like the blocking Methods - but its the balances that creates the unique feeling of the scenario. You have a gift for teaching-you’re awesome man!!! Thanks!
Color blocking plus vibrant colors to make the art pop is a masterpiece waiting to happen
Truly this is an amazing breakthrough especially for the novice artist like myself.
Thanks so much for this video..Very helpful indeed!..especially for new painters like me..
I have found doing this a great tool. Thanks.
Thanks for not making us wait until the middle or the end to getting right to the point of the title. A+ !!
Furthermore, I love your style and paintings.
This is what a great professor in collage used to tell us. 👍🏼👍🏼
Squint when looking at the subject. It helps for simplifying what you're seeing, removing excess detail.
Thank you! Very helpful, I’m one of those painters that gets lost painting flowers. Going to give this technique a try!
