Something that helps me a ton with this (which you demonstrated when showing the blurry flower reference image) is unfocusing my eyes when looking at a subject and painting the blocky, blobby shapes. I used to fixate on really small details to the point I’d have a really small detailed section with essentially nothing else around it, which overwhelmed me to the point of quitting pieces. Learning to paint the basic shapes of everything first was awesome and I actually started getting paintings done because of it!
Glad u finally understand how to paint better...all is basically shapes and layers.
Just keep trusting the process. At least that's what I keep telling myself when I start to freak out lol
Agree 100%! I paint loose bold pet portraits, and I definitely use, and always have used this technique in a different way, I actually squint, and blur the reference to capture shapes rather than getting caught up in a nose or eye or detail. Thanks you for this awesome way to describe this way of painting!
I am getting better at animals and they are what I really want to paint, but I reeeeally struggle when the animal is multiple colours like black and white or brown with white patches, I can't seem to get the light and shade right, any tips?
Hey, can you do a video on the proper storage, clean up and disposal of oil paints, thinners and mediums? Would be very helpful.
And how do you dispose of rags/paper towels soaked with linseed oil?
@lb10003 I place my used linseed rags in an old metal, air tight paint can. My solvent rags go in a separate air tight metal can. I use non cotton painters rags for both. I let them dry out in the cans, then drop them off at the hazardous waste area at the dump as if they were paint or old deck stain.
@@lb10003 am pretty certain there is a place in the community somewhere that has a combustible disposal center? I know auto-zone has vats you can get rid of your oil there. I take mine to a friend with a shop but I bought a reciprocal that is red and has a foot pedal it is an actual industrial shop container for the disposal of combustible items. You can get one on Amazon . Then I heard Some people soak them in a bucket of water until they dispose of them I guess that’s the safe thing to do? . For the left over paint I just went and got an unused paint can’t and with any globs I put it in there and reseal it ( in hopes 😂to make black or even a grey at another time) Not tying to take over anyone’s post just trying to help and share what’s seems to work for me.
I think most people know about starting with bolder shapes and then moving on to details, but you put that advice in a very intuitive way. I finally understand why sketches that only have curves do not look convincing, especially with shading without edges.

This came up in my suggested videos tonight; I've just binged about 5 others. I graduated best portfolio with a Bachelor's degree in Illustration in 2008, have worked as a free-lance artist and concept artist for over 13 years in the video game industry. I've had wonderful painting teachers. Have produced some technically well-executed oil paintings while in college. But since graduating I haven't picked up a paintbrush; I feel like I'm stuck. A blank canvas gives me anxiety. Conforming/appeasing professors in order to pass a class stripped all the creativity out of art for me. Comparing my work to other artists. Thinking every work I produce has to be a marketable, finished piece. Doubting my abilities when something didn't turn out exactly as I'd envisioned it. It all paralyzed me artistically for years. But after watching these videos where he explains the process in such an effortlessly tangible way...painting suddenly seems comfortable again. I just bought some oil paint and a canvas pad. I can't even express how grateful I am to this amazing person who's inspiring so many people
Loved this story. I’ve been stuck too for a few Covid years. The world went so downhill that I lost all enthusiasm for painting as it seemed so trivial suddenly. Hoping to get some joy back and start up again

Wow! I just learned a lot more about writing than I ever have before. I mean, not how to do it, but how to do it better. I understand plot points and lines now. It's the same thing. Find the big structure. For that you need the light and dark (reasons, motivations, tempers) and then you start chipping away at the blockiness by adding in detail. Lovely!
Thanks Chris, This is one of the best tutorials I've ever watched. My problem has always been that I get lost in detail, right from the start. In the end everything looked flat and round. This tutorial really helps me be more strategic with my paintings. I have to admit I admire the old style advertising paintings because of the exact fact that they have this blocky appeal. A great example is the Erik Henningsen advertising for Tuborg beer.

This is one of the MOST important tools I've learned. Not only does it improve your use of light and shadow but it often gets me past that paralyzed stage at the start of some projects where you sometimes just don't know where to begin. It helps you turn that mental image into something you can work with. Definitely subscribing and following this channel.

I did the exact same thing: carving blocks of wood into fruit shapes and painting them so students could see the value changes as the sides moved away from the light source. I also taught this technique in life drawing. Very effective! Nice job.

I just happened across this video and decided to try the technique on a landscape painting I am working on. It is a picture of a river with lots of river rocks. The rocks were looking way to smooth and unrealistic. This technique totally transformed my painting and fixed the problem. I will definitely be using it from now on! Thank you so much!

Cool video! When I first started drawing, I was instructed to feel the reality of the subject. The goal being that reality is absolutely obtainable. It's not. I've since learned, it's much better to see behind the reality and see the illusion you're making.

Thank you! Its so useful. I reached a plateau in my painting. Although most were “pretty good”, I couldn’t get better. Took classes, expensive workshops from great local artists, flew to a art workshop in Italy and read a few more books. Very little improvement from being pretty good, even selling some, to where I longed to be! I couldn’t stand it anymore. I’d start a painting and within a half hour, just didn’t care. I stopped, got depressed and hadn’t picked up a brush for at least five years. I told my friends, sure, I can paint, but I just can’t SEE! I can’t do this anymore. Discouraged, I walked away from painting.
THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED! I feel like I can finally see again! OMG I feel like I can see objects in a new way. THANK YOU. Thank you! I’ll watch everything you post on TH-cam. If you teach, I’d love to come for some classes etc.

The most excellent tutorial and so succinctly narrated. I have waited A WHOLE LIFETIME to pick up this technique. Prior to this I used the shape within the shape to work across the top to th bottom, For the outline I turned the picture upsidedown and pretended to be a small boat traversing slowly around the edge of a shore, stopping to change tack at directional drifts. Shortly after the barn pic popped up (@4:00) and the blocky shapes are placed over the tree, almost instantly everything else around appeared as flat and blocky too... patches in the mountain, the barn, the field, the yellow tractor. Some switch turned on in my brain... Thank you Chris!!!

Great advice. I am always fussing the details and need to literally step back, hold the brush near its end and makes bigger strokes and block forms and values.
