    I was doing a little study of just using warm and just using cool colors. Mine was pretty basic, using an apple 🍎 and adding shadows, a few weeks back. Glad I came across this video.

    Love this simplified clear explanation of use of limited palette. I love to do it, but seem to always fall back on my old ways. I need to just take the paint out and play more! And put all the rest away so I am not tempted… as you spoke my eyes roamed over the elephants in awe of your amazing;g skill and talent. Two little swoops and the ear is alive and moving! The light is perfect, the shadow just right!!! It’s not overworked of fussed with. Brilliant! It’s still realism, but more artistic. I am envious and a huge fan. I always tell folks about your channel.

      Hi Alison, thank you for such a kind and generous comment. I really appreciate your support!:).....just playing with paint I feel is so key to watercolour; and finding that balance of learning a bit of the technical stuff mixed with just having fun and letting go in the moment (so much easier said than done, ha!) Your theory of simple but accurate caught me. Simple is great for a beginner and accurate is important for everyone. You act what you preach 👍🏻🥰🙏🏻

    I have been trying to keep a limited palette and it has changed my paintings. I loved how you explained the concepts and illustrated digitally which area you were talking about. Thank you. I love your videos!

    Amazing video and advice! I find working in limited palette challenging but it's so essential to practice and mix your own colors.

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much, Oksana! It is hard and it does literally feel limiting and restrictive to start with. But as you say, it does make you think more about colour mixing and can be great fun!!:)

    Hi Tom, I absolutely love both paintings and it’s been really useful to see how you used a limited pallet and just how much you can do with just two or three colours! I find not only limiting my colours quite hard but also choosing which ones to use so the videos you’ve mentioned that you’re going to bring out will be really helpful!
    Thank you for making these videos😊
    (and a zoom demo based around this idea would also be brilliant!)

      Hi Jo, thanks so much for a great comment. It is amazing what can be achieved with so few colours, very fun too. It does feel literally limiting to start but can make us more concious about our colour mixes. And yes, picking colours can be hard - I certainly plan to do a video on this. I take the approach of usually one of each primary, but then "allowing" myself an extra colour or two if i can;t reach what I want - after all, you're the one making the rules whilst you paint ;) - more videos to come and zoom demo on idea is great idea!!:) T

    Fascinating! I’m looking forward to your videos about color; you do color so well! It might be cool to demonstrate color gamuts that fail, functionally or artistically (and why) or maybe are super-specialized (nocturnes?) But whatever, you always make good videos! Thank you!

      Thank you so much! Plenty to come on colours. I like that as an idea, the ones that don't work so well or specialised ones. Thank you for the support ;)

    Thanks Tom, really interesting to see both subjects painted with different colours, I wish I was more daring to try this. Look forward to your videos explaining colour in more detail, it's a really interesting subject.

      @@tomshepherdartist I did it. I used Primiary yellow, quinacridone red and ultramarine blue for a figury, keeping me in the orange area like the elefants and it went nice and balanced. Super, i am going to make another to day with the same colours to practice. Super. sorry for my bad english, I am danish.

    Hi Tom, thank you for going deeper into colour. I was drawn to the use of warm and cool colours in your 'simplify your subject' tutorial a few weeks ago featuring the cheetah, so I enjoyed this lesson, particularly in your thought process on how to maximize and edit your colour pallette and how the use of colour creates perspective and highlights the focal point.

      So glad you enjoyed it and found it useful! I love how much can be achieved with only a few colours or a very specific palette :) Colour is endlessly fascinating, T
