Sonderkraftfahrzeug (abbreviated Sd.Kfz.,[1] German for "special purpose vehicle") was the ordnance inventory designation used by Nazi Germany during World War II for military vehicles; for example Sd.Kfz. 101 for the Panzer I.
Sd.Kfz. numbers were assigned to armored, tracked, and half-tracked vehicles in military service with Nazi Germany prior to and during World War II.
There were no strict rules regarding number series. For example, the Pz. Kpfw. II Ausf. L was designed and named as a reconnaissance vehicle, yet was placed in the 100-series rather than the 200-series. Overall, the vehicles were placed in these categories:
    Sd.Kfz. 1 to 99: Unarmoured half-tracked vehicles
Sd.Kfz. 100 to 199: Tanks and tank variants, such as tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery
Sd.Kfz. 200 to 299: Reconnaissance vehicles, armoured cars, armored personnel carriers, and command tanks
Sd.Kfz. 300 and above: Mine-clearing and demolition charge laying vehicles

    Sd.Kfz. 1 to 99

    Hello!
I am from Germany and the short stands for Sonderkraftfahrzeug 251/1 Ausführung C. That means in English "Special vehicle 251/1 Type C.

Figures not only add to the visual appeal of a kit but also gives it a sense of scale. Thanks again Chris!

Softskins (kubelwagens, halftracks, etc.) did not have swastikas for national markings. UNIT markings could have them, such as pointed out the Afrika Korps, and the Viking division comes to mind. Planes would have had swastikas for air recognition, and sometimes ground vehicles had German flags that they put over the top to let the German planes know not to shoot at them. The Balkenkreuz ("beam cross" or "bar cross") included are correct for markings for this type of vehicles. Great review, and thanks for doing these for us!

Can't wait to get my hands on this kit.... The figures and the attention to details are pretty good.

Very detailed kit. While tedious, it should go together with a little glue and a whole lotta patience. But, by the time it's finished, not only will there be a cool looking half track fully built, but it'll be just in time to start the next kit. Thanks for the review...

Decal #35 actually does have a swastika on it (sound of woke viewers fainting 😛), half way up the palm tree. That was for the Afrika Korps version.

I have 2 of these. Very detailed kit. I made one for the DAK 21st Pz, and another for the 1SS 1942. It is a very cool model kit.

The short form Sd Kfz is pronounced ESS-DEE KAY-EFF-ZEE in English.😊😊😊😊. Just being a comedian here. I do not know how to pronounce the letters in German, nor how to pronounce the full expanded name in German. I have built some Academy kits and they have greatly improved over the years. Nice box art. Notice they do not include a Tamiya color reference.

Chris, most military modellers just spell it out: SdKfz #.
Also, technically it's not a half-track like an M3 or Maltier but a semi-track because of the longer length of the tracks. That extra-long track run also made it a bear to steer because it wants to just drive straight.
Also, the tracks are perfect for your technique of prepainting while parts are on the trees. Assembling them with Tamiya extra-thin cement means the glue virtually disappears leaving the links and rubber pads available for washing and dry-brushing.

armoured vehicles very very rarely would have used swastikas btw. The "BalkenKreuz" was the sign to go with on all armour. The planes had the swastika on it.

Two comments. Details quality is superb, equal or even better than TAMIYA. Second, the price? 23USD here in Chile. An equivalent model from TAMIYA here costs 70USD!....ACADEMY, please bring more new models please!

There were no swastikas on Axis ground vehicles, but you will see a reverse, slightly rounder swastika on many Finnish vehicles that has nothing to do with Nazism. The Finns were at war with the Soviet Union well before WW2 and the Finns were able to keep Soviet gains to a minimum. There was.a brief alliance with Germany during the war but the Finns brought that to an end in 1944 and joined with the Allies until the end of the war. .
