Love these Joel!!! your opinion's/experiences matter WAY more then you would think. I personally love these breakdowns for people "in the area" looking for good items!!! Great episode!
Joes is actually a newbee as far as places go in Kansas City... Bryants, Gates, Jacks Stack, Rosedale and lots of others have been around for over 50 years.
Gates is known for its service and it’s beef on bun. The counter can be confusing as a first time. Since it is a historically known place, many of the customers know what they’re getting or have a native to help them. However when you go back, just let them know it’s your first time and they will love to help. They really are known for friendly service. Even their sign says “how May I help you?”

Great video we just moved here last year and still finding places. Next time try Arthur Bryant's Barbeque world famous Presidents stop there when in town and also the Burnt end Burrito at The Rub. Joe's is one of our favorites.
I haven't lived in KC for several decades now. But my favorite was Arthur Bryant's. Good old standard KC BBQ. They offered brisket way back then. Beef was always big in KC, years ago, with the stockyards etc. Including steaks. Like the KC strip. Great video, BTW.

As a native Kansas Citian, we are known for our burnt ends. Little pieces of “meat candy!” We judge a BBQ joint by the burnt ends. Also, KC a style BBQ is a tomato based sauce. I always ask for my sauce on the side so I can judge the meat by it’s smoked flavor.
Jack stack, also has a barbecue lamb rib, that is in all probability, Kansas City's best kept secret. Between the lamb ribs and the beef ribs, Jack Stack has a great product. It would also be a Royal travesty, if a person would eat at Jack's Stacks and not have their dainty carrot cake liberally drizzled with walnut chunks.
Great video Joel. Man being able to try all that Kanas City BBQ love would be amazing. I know a lot of time goes into the video so thanks again for sharing.

Joe's KC (Okie Joes as I still call it), Jack Stack, Arthur Bryants, Woodyard BBQ, Slaps, Q39, Char Bar, Gates, are all so damn good I can't really pick a favorite. They all are different and unique in their own way, though Joe's still will be my go to in many cases, I try to love them all equally! I just went to Burnt End BBQ the other day in Union Station where you were and it was a little bit dry on the meat side but still really good, and definitely a place I will try again. It seems a little more traditional to non-KC BBQ though. I loved a change in sauce there. I hope you come back to KC sometime and we can come give you support for a challenge or something, and I really like how you picked Joe's in the end. Many of us from KC are happy to hear that!
Good write up. Each place has their own top item: Slaps - Ribs and Baked potato Casserole, Joe's - Z Man, Jack Stack - Burnt Ends and Cheesy Corn, Woodyard - Pulled Pork, Q39 - Overrated, Char bar - Still haven't tried it, Gates - Brisket.
I liked your video on our KC BBQ, but you didn't go to Arthur Bryant's basically where the burnt end was crested. Next time you are in town give them a try at their original location.

Kansas City native here. I regularly eat at every single restaurant he visited here. You seriously can’t go wrong with any of them. It’s like do you want to drive the rolls Royce, the lambo, the Ferrari, the raptor, or the g wagon. We are so fortunate to have this level of bbq at every establishment and there are SO MANY MORE than what was shown here. Any and all are welcome here, so please come visit if you ever get an opportunity to be in our neck of the woods! We would love to host you and show you how we get down!
Just for the people who are not regulars at Gates, Take if from a local. When you order ribs you have 3 options full slab, short end and long end. And you can pick your slab by asking for a "show." They don't do just 2 ribs. They do have a rib plate with 3 or 4 ribs. I think this was what Joel got charged for. Personally I get a full with slab with a show and pick my slab. I really wish Joel would of tried Arther Bryants.
great video, but there are far too many places in KC that get left out. Bates City BBQ, LC's, Rosedale's BBQ on SW Blvd, Hawgjaw, BB's Lawnside BBQ to name a few. If you ever come back you've got to ask a guide whose been here for a long time that knows all the little hole in the wall kinda places. My personal favorite, Rosedale, has been in KC for like a hundred years in the same location. So old school they only serve soda in bottles. so good and family operated. BB's lawn side is where you find your extra smokey burnt ends btw. you would have enjoyed them.
I live not very far from Slaps BBQ. Great food. Wish you could have announced, I really enjoy your videos. Lots of fantastic BBQ in this city. Glad you had a great time!

It's hit or miss though because meat is a muscle, it's not widgets, some are fattier and tougher than others. That's why at Gates its important to place your order, specifying for show. Which simply means you want to view your order before paying for it. If it's not to your liking reject it and request a leaner, fattier or less gristly one to your preference. BBQ costs way too much to not be satisfied. PS. Don't sleep on LC's. Greasy hole in the wall, but the BBQ is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥and their thick cut homemade french fries beat everybody's!

Kansas City was a railroad hub 100 years ago. Kansas city's claim to fame is not that they do anyone type the best but that we do all of the types good as we had access to all of the different types of meats because the railway system. Also the shear volume of barbecue restaurants is higher per capita than any place in the US. So we have the most and do everything well. That's our stamp
Burnt Ends originated in Kansas City.. Much loved here. Arthur Bryants is where it started. Also, Kansas City Metro area splits between Missouri and Kansas.. Most places you ate at were on the Missouri side.

Thanks for coming to Kansas city my home town
Burnt Ends originated in Kansas City.. Much loved here. Arthur Bryants is where it started. Also, Kansas City Metro area splits between Missouri and Kansas.. Most places you ate at were on the Missouri side.
I’m from here! How cool! You’d be here years to try all the best bbq lol
The times between 22:00 & 25:30, letting the phone ring that long would have pissed me off... It pissed me off and I wasn't even there. lol
