Close to a 100 year old cinematic example of a man who kept his marriage vows AND who called out to God/acknowledged a Creator God of the Judeo-Christian scriptutes And asked Him for guidance and help in his endeavors through his life as portrayed in that prayer. Arrowsmith, a man who chose to do the "right" thing. Thanks for posting this movie on the past values of life that have been given up/forgotten by this nation and its people of all ages.
Have you seen "Champagne For Ceasar," a comedy with Colman and Vincent Price? It's my favorite for both of them! The script is so cleverly written as two geniuses battle for supremacy as Colman claims he knows everything and seeks revenge thru a tv contest. It's absolutely delicious!
Ronald Colman, one of the finesh actors to come out of Britain. Check him out in "A Tale of Two Cities". He delivers a monumental performance. It was also great to see the legendary Helen Hayes and a young Myrna Loy in this film.
I still think John Ford's Arrowsmith is my favourite film of all time. And his direction is always tremendous with the handling of his actors a la John Wayne, George Brien, Victor MacLaglen, Ronald Colman.
The scope and execution of this film is nothing short of compelling. I wrote a dissertation on John Ford in college, but never knew of this grand work. So many fine sculpted scenes
I've been telling all my friends interested in cinema to watch Ronald Colman movies because of his marvelous voice, especially Talk of the Town with Cary Grant and the wonderful Jean Arthur...3 of the best voices ever....
I've never seen Helen Hayes except as the "free" plane ticket trickster on the first ever disaster movie "Airport"! I'll have to look for her elsewhere. Meanwhile I'm still adjusting to the idea it's her. And always a delight to find a new Colman movie!
Unspeakably fine and noble from every angle. A small masterpiece if ever there was one, breaking free from the melodramatic aesthetics of silent film to dramatic fulness.
I read this Sinclair Lewis novel in my 20’s (1960’s) and loved it. Fine old American pioneer stock is our boy from the Midwest - with an incredible British accent ! LOL 😂 1:31:17 Coleman’s incredible, beautifully created scene - poignant, devastation, despairing, emptiness, absolute grief. 🥀 The last line. A very fine actor. 😶
Surely, the lesson here is that we must go all-in to save humanity or it cannot, will not, be saved. This is one awesome film as relevant now as evet. Outstanding!!
Yes, almost 100 film and done so well. Most of the time these ancient films lack dialogue but enough here to b effective. Colman so handsome. Really enjoyed this and so glad he left with friend to Vermont to start own lab.
Arrowsmith (1925), written by Sinclair Lewis, is a novel about Martin Arrowsmith, an idealistic young doctor who faces ethical and personal challenges in the world of medicine. The story follows his journey from medical school to research, as he grapples with issues like the pursuit of scientific truth, the compromises of the medical profession, and the struggle between ambition and integrity. Arrowsmith confronts the realities of greed, bureaucracy, and his own inner conflicts, questioning his values and purpose along the way. The novel reflects Lewis’s critique of American society and the commercialization of healthcare.
Mryna Loy, way down in the billing here, later named The Queen of Hollywood, with Clark Gable as King. This in the '30s, but their titles were theirs for life.
A very enjoyable film that has more than enough topics of discussion within it, like much of Sinclair Lewis's other work. Aerosmith's initial dedication to the betterment of small town America was something to cherish. When he later on embarked upon a Walter Reed type effort at eradicating a long time plague of mankind, it too was also most deserving of high accolades. Instead of culminating all these successes into a position of Heralded accomplishments, he decides to shun the establishment, as he felt himself to be bigger than the whole system that had made him. A tragic story of a once optimistic Doctor who saw the realistic choices open to him, but in the end became nothing more than another arrogant idealist.
Jeez-Louise!! How Horrendous! The Dr.'s in Alabama refused to give the patients any penicillin even though it was widely available by then. They all died, horribly...RIP
The original lab leak movie. Actually, depriving half is valid. His "cure" might be worse for the patient than the disease. So testing in a scientific way is indicated. And if the treated group seems to do better then you change protocol. Treatment group, as we all have seen, might also have worse outcomes.
It's impossible to watch a movie on TH-cam anymore without interruptions for stupid ads every other minute. One minute into this movie there was an ad. Then a few minutes later, a series of ads. Ad blockers used to work, but no more. I give up on TH-cam. Good luck trying to squeeze more money out of it, yourself. It has become way too bloated with ads to be tolerable for people who just want to stay still and watch a classic for an hour and a half.
Their relationship is COMPLETELY unbelievable. Horribly wooden dialogue renders them caricatures really. Sad to see an actor as capable as Hayes relegated to such a cartoonishly subservient role. The real value of this film is as an example from a time before more equality existed for men AND women, when humanity was working with one arm tied behind its back. Terrifying that so many are glorifying this as some "glorious" past.
This is but L’étiquette de l’époque. How can you compare modern attitudes with that of years ago, with such cynicism. I'm sure there's plenty of misogyny, when actors are cast for modern productions, falling prey to the dreaded casting couch. You give no example why Ms Hayes was capable, to then lampoon her with comparison to that a caricature. Mainstream films are full misinterpretation, low budget production with quality writers & actors are always more enjoyable to watch.
In the 10 years before he died, Dr. Albert Schweitzer tried to find a young doctor who would succeed him in the famous jungle hospital. None of them would stay for longer than a few months. Too great a sacrifice...
Oh pioneers! Idealized Midwest culture: the Bible as moral compass; medical science - reverence for the natural world and fidelity. No elite Yankee alienation and no southern sloth and corruption.
Coleman and Hayes, in a sloppy plot that meanders forever. Bad enough he leaves his wife with enough tubes of plague to kill everybody and she has to handle it, but he doesn't give her 'the shot'? Throwing Myrna Loy in a short part that went nowhere didn't help. Disappointing.
