- Martha Proctor (Aline MacMahon) feels that something sinister has come to her home when her nephew, Dr. Dan Proctor (Scott McKay), arrives with his frail fiancée, Evelyn Heath (Anne Baxter). Tensions rise as Evelyn, hiding her true intentions, begins to manipulate those around her, particularly her future brother-in-law, Douglas (Ralph Bellamy). As Evelyn’s behavior creates conflict between the Proctor family members, secrets begin to unravel, and suspicions grow. With the atmosphere growing increasingly tense, it’s unclear just how far Evelyn is willing to go to achieve her desires-until an unexpected turn leaves the household on the brink of disaster.

Wow, this was intense, more like a play than a movie. Almost the entire film shot in the house, to give that tight, almost claustrophobic feeling that something very bad is going to happen. Superb acting, Anne Baxter never disappoints.
I highly recommend this surprisingly fast paced psychological drama! Don't let the vintage fool you.Drew me in non stop from the opening scene until the very end. Thank you for posting this little gem.♥
@@norlavine There are shades of this character in n All About Eve 1950 played by Anne Baxter as ‘Eve’
@@m.e.d.7997 Yes! Now that movie is one I now have to seek out. Thanks for reminding me! xx
"Thought we'd take a little drive to sober up." I'll never forget that line.
Great idea 😳😳
I am gonna watch it for the first time and already excited to read the good comments here ❤
Hahaha that's Anne Baxter playng Evelyn rehearsing to play Eve in All About Eve and tearing everyone and everything apart again!
Gooo Aunt Martha!!! Never underestimate a strong, older woman!!
Youth and ambition are no match for age and treachery. 😊
Love this 1940s movie along with so many others from that decade. ❤
Thank you very much Cult Cinema Classics. You are one of the very few YT channels I've ever seen get the CC's spot on! People who need this feature will be grateful to you.😊👍👍🏆⭐
Watching here in Pennsylvania USA 🇺🇸 This December 14th 2024. What a wonderful classic.
I LOVE the orchestral soundtracks. There were a composer, a Maestro and so many musicians playing LIVE, no Auto-tune, no presets, no samplers.
Exactly 💯
Ich finde die alten Filme muss an sich immer wieder anschauen .ih
AND some of THE greatest composers of the day with those scores!!
No kidding
I also love hearing radio show recordings from the 40’s and how annunciation was so specific to that era…
Ann didn't deserve any of this. What a sweet, lovely, beautiful woman and mother. 💓🌺
Now, that's drama. Enjoyed this movie. ❤
Great film! Ralph Bellamy and Anne Baxter, an unlikely pairing that worked quite well… thank you CCC!
I have seen this before and it is thoroughly gripping. Thank you, CCC, for showing this gem!😊
Reminds me very much of 1950 All About Eve with Anne Baxter in a similar role. Both great films.
Yes, but here she is mentally ill, it's sad.
@@i8dpie In Eve I think she has some mental health issues

Thanks *CCC* you've done it again!
Anne Baxter always excelled at playing the bad girl.
The maid is the wicked witch from Wizard of Oz.
That would be Margaret Hamilton also known to Baby Boomers and many Gen-Xers as Cora from the Maxwell House television commercials in the 1970s and 80s, which would have been a very lucrative gig for her.
Easy to spot Margaret Hamilton.
Yes
Love it !!!!

Guter Film, die Hauptdarsteller und Schauspielerinnen spielen sehr gut
Great movie thank you

This whole movie reminds me of what my ex did to me. Turned so many against me with lies. It's been 15 years, and still, people ghost me.
Hilda was the wicked witch in the wizard of oz!
Can't mistake her or her voice. Margaret Hamilton.

Excellent, excellent movie!!!
Tan joven y que extraordinaria actriz era
Why does she keep wearing the stupid robe? This movie seems like it's never going to end. Anne Baxter one note player. Even Margaret Hamilton couldn't save this dog 🪓
❤✨Anne Baxter.🍿🎬
Wasn’t expecting that kinda ending.
Great movie
There is something wrong with her mentally and he's taking her advice oh boy
I noticed no one smoke/drink in the movie. If they did, I missed it. I hate this kind of movie. Never ends well. So I just fast forward to the end...and sure enough she died -- That's the difference between old movies and those made today. Evil always loses. Thank you kind director.
Spoiler
Aunt martha rocks!
This psychological thriller about a neurotic, manipulative woman who attempts to destroy a fragile family from within is somewhat reminiscent of the following year's superior Leave Her To Heaven, and it's directed by the underrated John Brahm, who made a couple of superb melodramas with Laird Cregar around the same time as this. But it just doesn't work: it's talky, ethically dated, the claustrophobic setting gets really tedious after awhile, the music is overwrought and the ending is ridiculous. But it did give Anne Baxter a chance to limber up for her more substantial roles in The Razor's Edge and All About Eve and, by making Ralph Bellamy of all people the movie's sexual center, freed him up from playing an endless number of nice but dim guys who don't get the girl in movies like The Awful Truth, His Girl Friday and MANY others. How Ralph must've LOVED this filmmaking experience! 5/10.
This makes me think if H and how his wife MM took over and brought down.

I liked this movie but yes i do see the similarity in a certain way to Leave Her to Heaven 1945. It did also prepare Anne for her future roles.
Can a movie be ethically both up to date and in touch with its time I wonder 🤔
Can’t wait!

That was, well, pretty awful for the most part. Way overblown script, Anne Baxter emoting like mad, comic bits through in helter-skelter, and a score that much of the time sounds like it belongs to a 1930s romantic comedy. On top of that, a fairly muddy print also. Director Brahm did so much better work around the same time - THE LODGER and HANGOVER SQUARE, for example. But thanks for the upload - make me appreciate other noirs that much more.
I like it.

Yes, Margaret Hamilton.
I thought so too
Ann baxter..always breathy and over dramatic...vamping it up..nefretiri and eve..played same way..and Bellamy was the doctor in 1968 rosemary baby
Movie lovers be ready. God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 Believe & repent the consequences are eternal.
Tell the ppl they re going to hell
All that "repent and believe" stuff won't mean anything unless you put them in peril
Oh no she's cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs
Anne Baxter is very mousy looking. Never liked her in any of the movies she was in and this one is the worst . Ralph Bellamy was quite good looking when young. Huh!
