Wow, this was intense, more like a play than a movie. Almost the entire film shot in the house, to give that tight, almost claustrophobic feeling that something very bad is going to happen. Superb acting, Anne Baxter never disappoints.
If you grew up in the 80s and like me know Ralph Bellamy from Trading Places, check out Heaven can wait with Don Ameche great film....its wonderful to see all these great actors fron the 30s 40s and 50s great films too....
Can't mistake her or her voice. Margaret Hamilton. Born in Cleveland in 1902, taught at Hough Elementary School, and operated a nursery for the Cleveland Heights Presbyterian Church Other roles Another Language (1933), These Three (1936), Saratoga, You Only Live Once (1937), Nothing Sacred (1937), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), My Little Chickadee, and The Sin of Harold Diddlebock. She died in 1985.
Da es nur ein einziges Schauspielerhaus gibt, ist jeder gut in der Schauspielerei, ein gutes Drehbuch und ein guter Regisseur haben es hochgeladen, damit es jeder sehen kann
This psychological thriller about a neurotic, manipulative woman who attempts to destroy a fragile family from within is somewhat reminiscent of the following year's superior Leave Her To Heaven, and it's directed by the underrated John Brahm, who made a couple of superb melodramas with Laird Cregar around the same time as this. But it just doesn't work: it's talky, ethically dated, the claustrophobic setting gets really tedious after awhile, the music is overwrought and the ending is ridiculous. But it did give Anne Baxter a chance to limber up for her more substantial roles in The Razor's Edge and All About Eve and, by making Ralph Bellamy of all people the movie's sexual center, freed him up from playing an endless number of nice but dim guys who don't get the girl in movies like The Awful Truth, His Girl Friday and MANY others. How Ralph must've LOVED this filmmaking experience! 5/10.
Any time I join "Live chat" it turns out that I post six consecutive lines, and no one else replies or comments, then I turn off Chat, and my remarks have disappeared? Then I turn Chat back on, and I see comments from others(?)... Am I blacklisted? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I noticed no one smoke/drink in the movie. If they did, I missed it. I hate this kind of movie. Never ends well. So I just fast forward to the end...and sure enough she died -- That's the difference between old movies and those made today. Evil always loses. Thank you kind director.
That was, well, pretty awful for the most part. Way overblown script, Anne Baxter emoting like mad, comic bits through in helter-skelter, and a score that much of the time sounds like it belongs to a 1930s romantic comedy. On top of that, a fairly muddy print also. Director Brahm did so much better work around the same time - THE LODGER and HANGOVER SQUARE, for example. But thanks for the upload - make me appreciate other noirs that much more.
Movie lovers be ready. God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 Believe & repent the consequences are eternal.
Anne Baxter is very mousy looking. Never liked her in any of the movies she was in and this one is the worst . Ralph Bellamy was quite good looking when young. Huh!

"Thought we'd take a little drive to sober up." I'll never forget that line.
Watching here in Pennsylvania USA 🇺🇸 This December 14th 2024. What a wonderful classic.
Gooo Aunt Martha!!! Never underestimate a strong, older woman!!
I love this kind of movies. I never get tired of the. Thanks for sharing this jewelers!!!
I am gonna watch it for the first time and already excited to read the good comments here ❤
Great film! Ralph Bellamy and Anne Baxter, an unlikely pairing that worked quite well… thank you CCC!
Great movie! Thanks CCC!
Hahaha that's Anne Baxter playng Evelyn rehearsing to play Eve in All About Eve and tearing everyone and everything apart again!
Reminds me very much of 1950 All About Eve with Anne Baxter in a similar role. Both great films.
Yes, but here she is mentally ill, it's sad.
@@i8dpie In Eve I think she has some mental health issues
Yippee, one of my _all time faves!_ Not to mention _the best_ quality I've seen.
Thanks *CCC* you've done it again!
Love this 1940s movie along with so many others from that decade. ❤
I LOVE the orchestral soundtracks. There were a composer, a Maestro and so many musicians playing LIVE, no Auto-tune, no presets, no samplers.
Exactly 💯
Ich finde die alten Filme muss an sich immer wieder anschauen .ih
AND some of THE greatest composers of the day with those scores!!
No kidding
I also love hearing radio show recordings from the 40’s and how annunciation was so specific to that era…
Watching first time. Thanks.
2nillion wow 🎉.Congratulations and thank you for wonderful movies and sound tracks ❤
These woman were fine as wine 🍷 back then 🌹🇺🇲
Anne Baxter always excelled at playing the bad girl.
The maid is the wicked witch from Wizard of Oz.
Easy to spot Margaret Hamilton.

This makes me think if H and how his wife MM took over and brought down.
Best critic on this comment section
I liked this movie but yes i do see the similarity in a certain way to Leave Her to Heaven 1945. It did also prepare Anne for her future roles.
Can a movie be ethically both up to date and in touch with its time I wonder 🤔

It would be more beautiful if it was in colors.
That's the point of black and white film.
Oh no, that would ruin it entirely.
Ann baxter..always breathy and over dramatic...vamping it up..nefretiri and eve..played same way..and Bellamy was the doctor in 1968 rosemary baby
That ridiculous dramatic music is incredibly annoying!
Movie lovers be ready. God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 Believe & repent the consequences are eternal.
