Corsair AX860i click/power issue

  • This is a brandnew Corsair AX860i i got from RMA after my Corsair AX760i had the completely same issues after almost 1 and a half year of running without a single issue. Sometimes the PSU runs flawless for a day or two, or just runs for about 5-10 minutes or don't even POST, it's totally random, like playing russian roulette. My temporary Silverstone PSU i borrowed after i sent my previous AX760i in ran like a champ.
ASUS Surge Protection was set to "OFF" after i read on forums it can maybe help but sadly no dice.
    Mainboard: Sabertooth Z77
    CPU: 3770k @ 4.5Ghz
    RAM: 4x4GB Corsair Vengeance CL8-9-9-20 DDR3 1866
GPU: MSi 980TI Lightning with custom vBios
From the date till 23.01.2017 the PSU ran for a while again without no issues, but yesterday they came back, stronger than ever, i opted for another PSU instead "Coolermaster V750"

Oh my god! I've had exactly this issue for the last 6 months! I organised a replacement with the supplier I purchased this through and the exact same issue! I've troubleshotted this forever, however, got occasions where it actually works for a session. I have 2 now doing this issue but it's solid enough with an old Enermax I have. Thanks, I'm getting these Corsair's sent back! Never again.

As i still get some questions about how i fixed it? Well i didn't the only way back then was to get another PSU which was a Coolermaster V750, right now i'm using a Seasonic Prime Ultra 850 Titanium, which both working still without any issues at all in my previous system and my current one.

    • @seastnsw

If New & RMAed units are still doing this then clearly the product is not suitable. This is the only PC component I have had malfunction in a very long time. Ironically I purchased it because I wanted to build a nice reliable system. Even when it is working the fan clicks on and off very often which is very distracting. If this is still happening then how can I knowingly reinstall my RMAed unit into a system that I want to be reliable?

That's why I prefer PSUs that are actually semi-modular and the vital cables are soldered on permanently to the board of the PSU -- lesser room for possible errors! Don't care too much about johnnyguru, who would always dock a point for being not fully modular...

Finally I found the issue. In my case it was cpu 4 pin power supply. I connected the wrong one and basically psu was disconnecting it. Once was working fine for while another day it was shutting down after few minutes. To be honest I didn't bother for 3 years but once i start overclocking it was every day issue. And now solved

I had this exact same issue with FOUR AX1200i's that were replaced under RMA. When the 4th one failed I lost it and sent corsair a semi-angry/frustrated email. They have agreed to send me the HX1200i in return for this one. Even though the HXi is a good $100 lesser than the AXi, I just hope it's stable and wont have me worried about my PC shutting down for no reason.
Now I'm just waiting for the corona thing to blow over so I can get to RMA this for hopefully the last time.

I have the exact same issue with an AX760, it powers on, fan starts spinning, and 1 second later it turns itself off (also does that little click sound).
The only way to repeat is to remove the power cord (or switch off the back button) and wait for the capacitors to lose power, only then does it do the same on/off shit.
After insisting multiple times or waiting fo a while does it eventually comes alive, sometimes a CMOS clear seems to help, which sounds ridiculous because using another PSU it immediatly boots so the rest of the system shouldn't be at fault.

I had a similar issue. But I think it is because my GPU water cooling fan/radiator hangs by a screw to the case wall on the floor of the case which is usually sound as gravity, but if it becomes shaky it becomes sensitive to wobbles. Worst case scenario I have to open it up and put it back in position. It is in a tight space so is hard to screw to the case, but it is contained in its little cubby space, so is safe. My PC randomly shuts down when in this fragile state. But sometimes its more stable as I call it if you leave it running with no sleep or shut down. And if it is truly embedded in an unstable state, then bang the side of the case, not shaky bang, but non shaky vibration bang. Bang it harder if it does not respond. Just try not to cause a shake. I did this recently and my PC has been very stable such that I can put it in sleep mode or shut it down.
I have this PSU and I think it powers down my PC if that GPU radiator/fan get susceptible to wobbles. It is a magnetic fan; I do not know if it is more susceptible than ball bearings.
I have ruled out power surges as I replaced my surge protector. And my monitor has a crackling sound sometimes due to one of the cable screws being not attached to the monitor any more. But I ruled this out when I have tried starting my PC without the monitor plugged in.

It's an intermittent relay issue. The relay to the fan gets stuck. 1st thing that sometimes works is turning it off and unplugging it for 7-10 minutes, plugging it back in and flipping the switch. 2nd thing is to unplug it, flip the switch back and forth really fast and then give the PSU a good jolt, a good 7 of of 10 smack from your open palm or a small hammer. (I know, crazy right???) I have had mine do this randomly once every few months over the past 3 years. Same fix every time. Do not be gentle, remember if its not working you can't break it more, lol!

Been googling up PSU's for a bit and keep running into videos like these along w/ bad ratings in general, ended up taking back 2 1500i PSU's I got for myself and my wife for our PC's since its just not worth the hassle given how bad corsairs reputation is with support in general. Simply banning people for RMA'ing defective products more than once is a huge red flag. Gonna take a look at other PSU MFC's in the meantime. Thanks for posting this, hopefully enough of these will get QA to possibly do something for future releases. Not even their keyboards live up to par these days.

PSU’s do not use standardized modular cables. The pins are laid out differently from brand to brand. The problem in this video is the same thing that happens when someone plugs a modular cable from a different brand into these units. This could be the power supply or it could be something else. What we do know is whatever it is is causing the PSU to trip, but there are too many variables to know for sure and since everyone has decided that they are a computer DIY specialist these days (instead of actually going to school and getting a degree), you never know. Here is a forum discussing this:
      forums.tomshardware.com/threads/corsair-ax860i-with-evga-power-supply-cable-set.1871859/
The clicking sound that happens is a relay that is flipping off. It happens every time this unit shuts down and is supposed to happen. This happens with TVs and a lot of AV receivers as well. Here is another forum where this is discussed:
      forums.tomshardware.com/threads/psu-making-odd-clicking-sound-as-i-shut-down.2666823/
I actually have real world experience with these products. I have implemented many systems with these units and neither I nor any of my clients have ever had a problem with these. I have used Corsair, EVGA, Cooler Master, LSP, and many other brands in the last two decades and have not once had to RMA any of them. I tend to rely on actual real world experience rather than conspiracy posts. I am not saying that Corsair has not had a rare case (forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=170975) but I am saying that I am not going to run back to the store and return something that I haven’t even tried, just because I read something online.
It really looks like you have been spending a little too much time at the “school of Reddit”(as you put it) reading posts about people getting banned for RMAing their products: ;) It is funny that you blasted me like this when you are the one who was doing this yourself. ;)

@@jacquestcomc While this is mostly true, except you don't necessarily need a degree to understand. FYI - I just bought a brand new AX1200i in a 1 year old pre-built microcenter PC. Changed cables with the supply, and ran BEAutifully for the first 2 weeks, and tons of use. Randomly... didn't even open the case, it just cut out and went red light. I turn it back on and did exactly as this video for awhile until randomly wouldn't start either. I pulled out the PSU, ran the test and all green. Put it back in, ran fine for 5-6 hours, then again randomly cut out except it never went red and just kept rebooting itself every second. I'm crazy annoyed... now may just go EVGA or something. (Yes, before reinstalling PSU I triple checked every cable, ram stick, moba header, surge protector, outlet, everything. Reason I switched to the AX1200 was because I had some 600 and am about to get another RTX 2070 to help hashcat; and I earn enough to not worry about a more pricey PSU.

Pretty sure all us Corsair "fan boys" have do this. I have a 1200 and 1500 (both AXI's) and must do this procedure every ....um couple months or so, sometimes a week long every day. Then it start working for another extended period of times. Sick of dealing with Corsair about this issue as they are both RMA'd units that experience same failure as their predecessors. I don't get angry anymore and simply prop my system on my desk and perform "the sequence". Ya, its frustrating, yet don't believe there is a better psu on the market with this kind of specs that would suit me. When they come back into stock and supply chain resumes to normal after this pandemic I will purchase another. I will try the 1600 and see if it has same issues.

SOLUTION: Had the same problem with the PC with a Corsair AX860i, 5 years old, pressed power button, didn't post, just moved the fan about 2 centimeters, that's it. Exactly like the video above, even the sound it makes. Tried these first: 1. Reseat all the RAM, still didn't work. 2. Reseat the GPU and power, didn't work 3. Unplug all 4 internal HDDs, SATA cables and power, didn't work. 4. Tried removing all: RAM, GPU, HDDs, still didn't work. 5. Finally remove the PSU (all cables removed) from the motherboard and did a self-test, PSU worked!!! So it's not the power supply!!! 6. Put PSU back into the motherboard, cables reattached, didn't work again. 7. Planned to put in a secondary working Corsair AX860i PSU from a working PC to verify...but held off on that approach. 7. Maybe it's the MSI Gaming 7 motherboard. All power off, shorted the CMOS pins.... restored power, pressed the button.... PC booted!!!!!! Hope this helps someone.

This beautiful little piece of shit Power Supply from corsair wasted more than 200 hours of my time trying to trouble shoot it and sticking to it for the sake of the power digital monitoring feature and the custom carbon pro cable mod cable kit I invested in it.
Worst fucking PSU I ever had, coming from X-850 Seasonic so compact, beautiful and low key, never ever had a single issue with the older sea sonic ( that I sold unfortunately). This little piece of shit from corsair cultivated in me the phobia of powering on my super powerful and beautiful open frame Thermaltake PC in fear of the shutdown loop, such a shitty implementation of a good idea, will never buy any corsair product again.

@@hurgurhurghuthfn Yeah i perceived about the same as you, when it worked it was a almost perfect PSU till that day. Funnily enough i still have the RMAed PSU in my cabin and i actually tried to use it back then when i got my Crosshair VII when i upgraded to 2700x but died too after about 10 seconds into POSTing, sadly not even for powering my pump (i went full customloop watercooling) to fill my loop the corsair suffices, it basically does the same as in the video :(

@@Scerate Thanks Rick for your attentive follow up, really I appreciate being able to " vent" about this issue :) thanks bruh! Anyway I bought mine used off ebay, and have it powering I9-9900k on asus Z370E, CPU is at 5Ghz on balanced mode and usually all power consumption is around 130 Watts, this PSU could be sensitive to heat and/or unstable overclocking ? It appears also that some capacitors are sitting close to PSU cables outgoing connectors and with heat would "rub" against other circuits or something, just a lot of speculations and wasted time, I just like the digital power monitoring feature and switchable over current protection (always turned off in my case), but many new PSUs mostly thermaltake i series have that feature for a decent pricing and a much better software interface, but bottom line trustworthy PSU are EVGA G3, silverstone compact PSUs and mostely Seasonic especially their older X modular series (last ones in the series like x-850 mk3), maybe some XFX ones too.

I've had the same problem with 4 of these....If you smack the psu a few times it will stay on.....TRASH product. I believe it's something to do with a relay.

Hello, you say that doing this worked for you? Monitor power input and output, efficiency, fan speed, and internal temperature, right from the Windows-based application. Or take it to the next level and set and modify fan speed profiles, or even select between virtual "single rail" or "multi rail" software modes, with selectable OCP points.
