I’ve had several large jade plants for many years, but never knew you could prune them back so hard! I’ve hand pruned the leggy stems several times with good results but this is so interesting! Thank you for sharing this!
Yes! These are tough plants for sure
Your ongoing videos about jade plants have been a huge source of inspiration and education for me. Mine has been outside all summer recovering from the combination of a great fall and hard pruning. It's looking good. It will not be pleased to come back inside.
That is so awesome to hear and thanks for sharing! I wish I took my jades out this summer but I'm always weird about them when we go away for camping.....I can't chance it lol
This gave me such a confidence boost for pruning my jades. I hope we get to see an update on this one, excited to see how it grows back
@@PDHatsuneMiku That's awesome.... You can do it! There will definitely be an update video on this plant
Thank you for your information. You've made me really see my jades in a new light. I went from 3 to 15 in a month after watching your videos
Wonderful!
Thanks Jeff. Always a pleasure to find a new video from you.
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
i'm in Maryland on the Eastern shore it sits on my deck and gets sun all day long. I have watered it at times everyday and the thing I've noticed is the leaves plump up and the tips turn purple. in a few weeks i'll bring it in the house till about April, and i'll only water it a few times over the winter. And even by April the leaves are not paper thin, back into full sun some water and the tree grows and gets really green. everyone is right, you almost can't kill a jade
Yes....if they are outdoors in the summer they LOVE IT. The leaves get sun stressed.
thanks for the vids, my mum and i just got one from a yard sale and are going to give it a shot!
@@falinguptheband you can do it!!!
Thanks to some advice from you my monstera no longer leaks water from the leaves. I started watering every other time the app suggested and it’s quit leaking. And doing just fine. Thank you Jeff.
That's awesome!
Thanks for giving me the confidence to hard prune my Hummels Sunset Jade that was stretched out and turns out mealy bugs were causing it to loose leaves. Reset! Now it's under a grow light and hope to grow some new leaves
Keep me posted with your plant!
Get ladybirds
Thank you I love Jade plants, mine is looking ok but I need to be repot it. Wow it looks so bare with the hard prune I’m sure it’ll come up a beauty. I think I may over water mine. Thanks for pointing out how to water these very attractive hardy plants.
Thank you for Sharing your beautiful jade plants lovely video ♥♥😎😎🇹🇹🇹🇹
My pleasure 😊
Wow, i had no idea they were that tough.
We have one probably 10-15 yo. Started in iirc a like 4in pot.
Its now like 2 1/2' in every dimension. Every year when i have to bring it in and out during winter limbs get broken, and i always plant em, and they usually grow.
But its current pots badly cracked, and i was sweating manhandling it into a new pot.
I need to do the same thing with all my jade plants. I hate the thought of them having bugs, but Im sure they do. I left them outside all summer and that’s when I end up getting bugs in my plants. I probably have twenty or more jade plants.
@@sheilagilleland4312 for my jades and Cactus lately I've been using isopropyl alcohol spray.... Kills mealybugs and everything else Lol. I would try it on small areas to see how your plants react, but I've never had an issue with it on mine
I have found that when my large jade plant became root bound it flowered. Little white flowers.
Very interesting because Ive heard they need a period of rest (less light and cooler temps) in order to flower. I'm jealous of those flowers, so good job! 👍
I have several 35+ year old Jades and they live under grow lights in a small basement greenhouse. Should I open the zipper of the greenhouse in the winter to give them cool air and perhaps induce flowering? Though the plants are not watered very often, they are wonderful looking, with a tinge of red on the leaf edges that are closest to the light and the mini greenhouse becomes quite warm and humid feeling( to me). I am considering letting them experience the cool temps of the basement ( about 50degrees F) this winter. I had other Jades a long while ago that bloomed every winter with a perfume that was more delicious than orange blossoms. That one got cooler winter temps.
I have never had mine flower yet as it needs a period of cool temps....here is an article i found.
"Firstly, jade plants must reach a certain age and size in order to start flowering. They usually bloom for the first time once they reach about 40cm high. Young jade plants will not bloom. Secondly, they must be kept somewhere dry and cool in winter, ideally below 11 °C. It also helps to place your jade plant outdoors during the summer and only bring it inside for autumn and winter. Lastly, theseplants need as much light as possible, even throughout the winter months. Without enough light, they will not develop flowers. As long as all these conditions are met, the chance of your money plant flowering is high."
i am amazed how many stalks you have in your pot! for me that pot size would hold a max two stalks!
I jammed them in as small cuttings after I pruned my larger jade. Haha
Good advice! But I think the biggest lesson here is the value of being very patient and not afraid of being brutal in your pruning. Prune, prune, prune, and be patient for the long term goal of the world star plant that makes people's jaw drop when they see it.
I often say this..... patience is how you get mature plants lol Thanks for watching
Well, watched this video last night and this morning my poorly jade plant got a severe pruning. The lower leaves have been pale and squishy for ages and repotting made no difference at all. It'll be interesting to see what happens now ......
Keep me posted! And give it lots of light
"The room temp and artificial light". Should you use florescent or "at a safe distance" incandescent lighting. This is in an apartment with little sunlight from an outside source. How much warmth is needed in a room around 75 degrees? This is for a Jade that is always indoors. Bonsai forever!!!!! LOL!! Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge with us!!!!!!!!!!
Thank You 🌱
Thanks for watching!
Oooo. I need to cut my Jade just like this. It doesn’t seem to want to do anything . Viewer in Houston 🌿🌱
Thanks so much for watching. If it doesn't seem to be doing anything then it's probably not getting enough light
How do you get your stems growing strong upright into tree form.. I just discovered and followed you.. will do a deep dive into past vids. Thanks for being so informative.
Jeff's psydonym might as well be "Slim Jady" by now.
Love your vids! And Jades are so great to experiment with 😊
Omg.....love this!
Great job on your project
Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I've only just started raising my first indoor succulent plant. And I was unsure if it was safe for my plant to be in the shade. So I'll let my indoor Jade plant receive the direct sunlight more. Because I got a bit worried. And I've noticed that my Jade plant is starting to grow sub branches from the main branches. Is that safe to trim off?
Do you ever fertilize your jade plants? If so, would this be a good time to do it when it is going to be pushing a lot of new growth?
If my soil has diminished in the pot can I add more soil or should I repot and then add so? Thanks for your posts.
Sherry
Diminished from the top?
I have an older one which was damaged in a move and has tiny top growth but very long stems growing downward.it’s interesting and has always been healthy.I wonder should I prune to make it look like every other one or leave it with its oddity?💙
@@andrewevans1116 that was the plan for this one.... To let it grow crazy. But I had to cut it back. You don't need to print a jade at all..... LET IT GROW!
Excellent info. Thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing.
👍
Hi Jeff, thanks for another great and informative video.
Do you have any advice for those living in hotter climates to care for Jade plants successfully? How to keep them healthy etc? Any artificial environment to be created to keep Jades happy in hotter climates etc ?
Are there any differences in the levels of difficulties to care for the different types of Jade plants? Are Gollums more difficult to care for than normal Jade plants? Are big leaf Jade plants less fussy to care for than small leaf Jades? Thanks
Had anticipated a reply/advice on the above enquiry but am disappointed....
Hey, I'm sorry I missed this comment. What type of hotter climate? Hot/dry or hot/humid?
Is yours plant indoors or outdoors? It all depends on your conditions. If it's indoors, the most important thing is light! Outdoors, light is also important, but also the heat dries it out quicker so you may have to water more often. Just do the taco test for the leaves and that will tell you when it needs water
@@EverythingPlants Thanks, Jeff for your reply.
It is hot & humid with average day temperature around 32 Celsius and night about 28C.
I place them indoors next to a window with indirect light & the average temperature is about 28-29/30C. They are also placed under a grow light.
The soil is 50% purmice and 50% succulent soil.
I water thoroughly when the leaves are limp but notice the leaves do not go plump even after watering. (I'm not sure if it is due to being indoors, the water in the terracotta pot takes more time to evaporate, thus causing root rot? )
Some new leaves just turn brown for no apparent reasons. Other pots of Jades have leaves with brown spots. (what disease is this? )
The leaves of some pots just drop when touched.
What are the possible causes and how to prevent them? I am on the verge of giving up keeping Jade plants but on the other hand, I like these plants very much.
Any advice?
Jeffrey Scissorhands is at it again ✂️✂️
Hahaha....I can't help myself
I purchases a jade “gollum”. It,s doing fine. But some of the growth has reverted back to the original “crassula” shape with round leaves. Please let me know how I can make it look like an entire Gollum, rather than 1/2 1/2.
@@angelaaye6746 I have actually never seen this. Could you send a picture to my IG account if you have one?
I think the only way to achieve this is to cut off the branches with regular leaves
My dad passed away and his huge jade plant needed a repot…. Or so I thought….. it had root rot so I cut it all up and I hope it roots and grows back. I didn’t water and I’m wondering if I should wait to water until I see a new leaf?
@@ItsMeHeatherT hey....I'm so sorry to hear about you dad. Do you have IG? Message me on there about your plant and I can help
But jade plants have thick leathery leaves.. can the trips really get the juice out of them??
Well sure.....at least Google says so lol
Is it a bad idea to drastically prune my jade this time of year or should I wait for spring? I live in northern New York State. What about cleaning up the roots the way you do before re-potting? Is it too much shock to re-pot and prune at the same time? Thanks so much. Your videos are really informative and helpful.
I would only suggest it if it gets a lot of light, otherwise I'd wait until spring when it has enough energy to produce all those new leaves. Same with the root prune.
What do you suggest for leaf shine?
I don't use commercial leaf shine, but simply spray off the plant or use a damp cloth.
I have used a product called We The Wild protect which has a variety of ingredients, but leaves the plant with a since shine
Is the one your trimmed all one plant or multiple in one pot?
It is multiple in one pot. They were from a previous pruning.....I just stuffed them all in one pot!
The go to guy for anything jade! This video only highlights why when I give away clippings from my jades they also get a link to your channel.
'the jade guy'..... This should have been the name of my channel
@@Prickly-Brew I do that too.

I do have a question. I have a jade that was outside and brought it into the house due to the cooler weather. I've noticed a few white fuzzy stuff at the leaf joints, I assume it's mealy bugs. Any treatment that you'd recommend? I once use a spray bottle of Neem oil and it killed my jade. So, what do you recommend? Thank you in advance.
You rubbing alcohol on a q-tip. I actually found a small pocket size spray bottle with alcohol (isopropyl) and I spray all my cactus and jades
@@EverythingPlants ok. Do you use 70% or 90% rubbing alcohol? After saturating the plant and undersides, how long do you leave the alcohol on? 5-10 minutes? Do you entirely rinse jade after or not? Thanks.
@@danielwebster7030 70%....I let it dry and I have never rinsed them off.
@@EverythingPlants alright. I'm doing this asap. Thank you for your help. Much appreciated. 🙏

No cut paste? You just dried out the cut ?
How long ago was the pruning of the jade in 2:10 ? How long does it take to grow new leaves?
About 4 months ago. Here's the video if you're interested.

Hi, can I do this with my Gollum jade? Many of its leaves are marked with little black dots from insect damage from a year ago. The plant is 6 years old with a 3 inch thick trunk. How long until the leaves regrow? We’re in the first month of spring in Perth currently.
I have never trimmed a Gollum like this, but I would have the same confidence as with a regular jade. Spring is the perfect time to do this. Make sure it gets bright light and it should take a maybe a few weeks before you start to see new growth
@@EverythingPlants Thank you. It’s currently in a full sun position so I’ll get chopping tomorrow.
@@EverythingPlants Update, I pruned off 90% of the leaves and left a few healthy ones on there. It lives outdoors in full sun but we’ve had lots of rain so I’ve left it in a spot undercover out of the full sun. It only gets morning sun so I hope to see some new growth soon.
Why is it being cut? My jade is huge - I've never felt the need to cut it.
You definitely don't need to. I cut this one because of leaf damage from pests. I also prune to shape them a certain way as well
@@EverythingPlants ok, got it. Thank you!
Love the hanger pot you have your jade in ❤❤
Thank you! 😊
Those little holes are normal with age
Cutting at a 45 degree angle might make it dry out faster because of slightly more surface area but who cares tbh
