Hi Jeff! From watching your videos pruned my 12" bowl of Jade w -a-y back in the Spring. Now I have a bonsai -looking forest bowl of Jade. Thank you for all your advice and experimentation!
Cute little Shreck ears! 😂 Thanks for encouraging us to be brave and to experiment with our plants. I think I’ll follow your lead and prune mine. She was not getting enough light in the winter and while she is now happy outdoors, she’s not as healthy looking as I’d like her to be. I’ll give it a go 🤞. Thank you!
Last fall i rediscovered my old jade that i had abandoned at my parents house, and oh boy the poor thing was *neglected*. It was 7yo,very leggy, and had started a bunch of tall bare stems from fallen leaves, had split off at awkward heights, and the whole thing's roots were so tangled i couldnt even separate them. And even though i was all worried cuz it was autumn, i rewatched all your jade videos and did a SEVERE chop, barely leaving any leaves, and just like yours, its doing well and even went through another chop to better shape it! Thank you Jeff for all your advice, it really helped (me and my Master Oogway are very appreciative!!🐢🌱)
Thank you for all your encouragement! I have ventured into the Jade pruning realm now because of your videos and am loving it! Will also be trying the Molly's succulent mix!
I just prune mine again. Still really small. But it's fun watching the new little buds. They stared growing days later! I have another the randomly grew leaves in between and old and new growth. They are amazing
Jeff, thank you for this video. I have a large jade that has done the same thing as yours. Kind of long stretched out branches. I don't really like the way it looks so I think now that it something necessary to do for the health of plants. Plus I need the room.
I was super scared to prune my jade. It showed..poor stretched out guy. 🙂 After watching MANY videos to gain confidence, I went for it. Sort of. 😂 I am here to get more "confidence". Great video..thank you! 🪴
Been a while since I had a jade plant it was one of my favs ! This would have helped tremendously keeping it and thinking about getting another ! thankyou ❣️
You completely chop up your jade and it comes back beautifully. I can't even keep one alive long enough to actually need to prune it. For some reason, Jades just don't like me. You=jade whisperer!!!
@@EverythingPlants, which is why they've always been in myself facing window. I'm in Washington State in the desert so those windows get a lot of light. I think they just hate me, lol.
I inherited a very old, leggy Jade. I want to hard prune it but I have never done it before. The main trunk has a 3.5 inch diameter. I do not want to kill it. Should I, or should I not? It sits in an east and south facing corner window, gets sun all day long but we’re going into winter.
Hi there When is the best time to prune them? As it is September now and I have one jade plant that’s just growing so tall and not branching out.. why is that? Thanks
My soil has got really dense in my Jade but it doesn't seem to be acting angry about it. Would you let it be or go all pencil aeration or risk the hard work and repot anyway? I'm basically avoiding it like the plague. It isn't hydrophobic.
I recently potted a bare-root jade I received which was pretty under-watered. I waited a few days before watering, but the plant still looks super wrinkly. The water meter says between 1 and 2. Should I water it again or wait? My instinct is to wait, but the majority of the leaves look thirsty. Edit: it's been 5 days since watering
I inherited my grandmother‘s Jade, which by my estimations is about 50 years old. She had it in the same pot the entire time. I have done several hard prunes. One I did on one of the larger stems has never come back. Now half the plant looks bare. When repotting it, I noticed that the root system wasn’t as thick and healthy as yours. I have used a succulent mix for the last 8 to 10 years. I do hard pruning on it once a year and have new baby plants. But I’m still not able to get the main plant, as full as I wanted. Any suggestions?
The only time I could see there being no growth after a prune is.... 1) not enough light to produce the new growth 2)pruned in the off season. I always prune when the plant is actively growing in spring or summer 3) it had some root damage or not a large enough root system to produce that growth
That can be natural. I have some along the branch that yellow and fall off naturally.....the old leaves. It could also be a light or watering/root issue
@EverythingPlants yes lots they don't always grow back 2 ways and my biggest one stopped growing from the top and grown 4 new bits at the bottom. Some I have cut right to a stump to play about with jade is hard to kill unless you get root rot .I am only in the early years of experiments i wish I started years ago
I would be nervous to cut the main stump.....not because I would be worried about it not growing, but only with how stupid it would look. I have no problem cutting any branch off. The problem is no matter what you do, it all takes TIME lol
For branching, I always recommend pruning when you notice the plant is actively growing..... typically in spring and summer. I have some of mine under grow lights, so I can prune those year round!
What do you recommend for millie. Bug ? I use a soap spray plus wipe a thing I SEE OFF THEN RINSIE WITH C,LEAR WATER .WHAT WOULD YOU DO HAVE MANY JADE PLANT

It never hurts to do a good prune
Always enjoy the Jade plant tips.
Thanks Linda!
Me too. One of my new favorite plants. I'm gonna end up with a jade forest haha
You miss out on so many opportunities to threaten plants by never having watched silence of the lambs while having a hose in the basement 😂
hahaha
I use bonsai soil that the Bonsai supply puts out. It is like that but, not dusty.
Nice! Any brand you'd recommend?

The Molly’s mix looks like a great mix. I don’t have any succulents though but if I get some I may try it.
If you have the light, then you should definitely give them a try!
@@EverythingPlants I’ve got grow lights everywhere.
Jeff is the Jade king. 👑
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
Looks so much prettier I’m going to try that
Good luck!
I never thought about doing that to get the soil off. But then. I don’t have a garden hose.
You can even let it just soak in a container of water
Great video. Thankyou.
Thanks!
Gorgeous plants I noticed 😊
Thanks!
Quick question: what do you do with the cuttings? Can you root them? Phenomenal video, BTW. A fan from Toronto.
Hello! Yes you can use the cutting to start a plant for sure!
Hi Jeff, how do u know when to water your jade in this particular mix of stone / soil? Looks very gritty? Just on sight?
I inherited a very old, leggy Jade. I want to hard prune it but I have never done it before. The main trunk has a 3.5 inch diameter. I do not want to kill it. Should I, or should I not? It sits in an east and south facing corner window, gets sun all day long but we’re going into winter.
Very informative, great video.
Do u ever fertilise your plant?
Oh yes...for sure. I'll fertilize about once a month when it's actively growing. Great question!
What’s the difference between that gritty mix and pon? I haven’t used either.
I ❤ mechanical pencils ❣️ ✏️✏️✏️
Hey! Love it!
Do you recommend letting the plant grow and just pruning every early spring? Or do you prune back every couple months?
@@dereckholben937 I will prune it once a year in the spring. One of my plants I didn't prune this year and I'll wait until next spring
Hi there
When is the best time to prune them? As it is September now and I have one jade plant that’s just growing so tall and not branching out.. why is that? Thanks
What time of year should this pruning be done? I live in Brooklyn NY
I always say when it is actively growing in spring or summer. If you have it under grow lights and it's growing then you can prune anytime of year
So what do you do with the ones you cut off? Do you Repot them.
You can definitely! I usually give them away because I have enough jades lol
Oh no! Jeff done lost his sanity! Lol don't worry Jeff, we can find it! It's probably in a forest somewhere!

Hi. Did you ever hear of putting cinnamon on the cut branch’s ? Anyways looking good. Happy planting 🎉😊.
Yes I have heard of that before...helps sterilize the area
@@EverythingPlants , might make an interesting experiment 🤗🪴🍀🪴🍀🪴🍀🪴🍀👍👀😃, with the cinnamon. Have a Happy Sunday!!!!
I use tea to feed my plants
Like regular tea bags? Or you have a mix which you make into a tea ☕
@@EverythingPlants regular builders british tea bags but now I've started using Black tea bags

I would loosen it up when you go to repot it someday. If it is happy now, then there is no sense in disturbing it now.
I would wait if it's been watered. Make sure it gets good light. It's always hard to give advice as I can't see the plant or know your conditions

Some of the leaves on mine have a slight yellow tint. What would cause this?
That can be natural. I have some along the branch that yellow and fall off naturally.....the old leaves. It could also be a light or watering/root issue
Can you cut back a jade gollum the same way?
Yes you sure can! I just put out another jade video today
Thank you so much!!
I keep chopping mine just to see how they grow back
And? Any interesting findings?

Can you prune baby jade like this
I generally recommend you let a small jade grow for a couple years before pruning. Give it time to shape naturally
I need that soil
Check the description of this video for the codes for both Canada and the US
What would be the largest branch you can dare to cut off?
I would be nervous to cut the main stump.....not because I would be worried about it not growing, but only with how stupid it would look. I have no problem cutting any branch off. The problem is no matter what you do, it all takes TIME lol
