    To be honest, I can't imagine her family being so desperate to see her. She's a vicious, violent murderer. I guess it takes all sorts and they'd have a romanticised view of her. And, not too honest themselves, being in touch and even seeing her and not turning her in, knowing she should be behind bars.

      No Bonnie and Clyde were doing what a lot of the era's 'outlaws' were doing:
      trying to survive. The rest is the media and authorities painting them a certain.
      Add myths and romanticising both them and the great depression: load of BS.
      It was poverty on a level that destroyed the entire structure of America and beyond.
      No wonder some took the law into their own hands? When you're trapped with no choice and been abandoned? You'll do anything.

    Kind of wild to believe that she kept her nose clean for that long. 35 years from the escape until the last time her family saw her alive, while it is possible, it becomes problematic, in that she was called "the most violent" in the early 30s. But anyway this was a good one DC.

    • @princesstamika
      @princesstamika 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the 30s were all about sensationalism and trying to sell more papers. stretching the truth a little. that's not the problematic part. her not being arrested again doesn't mean she kept her nose squeaky clean but anything is possible. criminology isn't very sure of "all re-offend" like it pretends to be.

      I’m her great grandson, and with the family knowledge, I can say we believe the media overhyped her involvement in the crimes. Don’t speak on things you don’t really know about, we were still talking with her until the mid 90’s.

    When I worked at the academy of the Illinois Dept. of Corrections I occasionally made trips to various prisons. One day I went to Dwight Women's "prison". I was surprised. Rather than the castle-like, ominous feel of Illinois' oldest prisons, Dwight was almost charming. Non-violent women lived in dormitories called cottages, basically four-plexs sprinkled around the grounds. Built in the 20s (?) in a quant style with screen porches and furnished throughout with wicker furniture built in male prisons. After seeing some of the mens archaic institutions I was happy that at least the women were treated with a little compassion. No walls, just fencing.,. The public in that era considered most female offenders to be brought down by actions of criminal husbands and boyfriends.

    Great episode. Too bad though she was not apprehended. Many people have very difficult lives, there’s no mistake about that however it certainly seems to me that she had the comprehension of right and wrong and basically kicking this guy to death along with her two thug buddies would seem to me to be a fairly heinous crime. It really does not sound like she took any real responsibility and again blaming her woes on single parenthood etc. doesn’t wash. I hope she felt life on the run every hour of the day.

    Back then - as now - if more effort was put into rehabilitation and less emphasis on "punishment", we might live in a less heinous society. Neither the death sentence nor "life without parole" take into account the miscreant's capacity for repentance.

    • @rmooreg
      @rmooreg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Unfortunately, rehabilitation is very difficult to assess acurately and can be faked easily by any criminal wishing early release. Many if not most people convicted of violent crimes have established this behavior as a way of life. It' their method of dealing with conflict, resolving differences, handling disagreements, etc. It"s how they get their way. I don't believe that, in most cases, that they don't realize that it is wrong. Quite the contrary in fact. Most use violence against weaker and unarmed victims, not those who are able to defend themselves. They use it in the commission of crimes, not in everyday coversations (usually!). My point is that effective rehabilitation means bringing about a complete paradigm shift in the inmate, not an easy task. Extremely difficult at best, and even harder to ascertain the degree of success. At some point it comes down to releasing them and crossing your fingers, hoping for the best. A bit iffy since most will be released right back into the domestic, economic and social circumstances that fostered and bred the personality and behavior that landed in the system to begin with. Those are powerful forces to resist or to deal with using unfamiliar and less successful methods than the violence they came to rely upon in the first place. Discouraging but unfortunately true that in their world, if you are not a predator, you are prey.
