My grandfather was an employee at the CSIRO at the time this occurred. There was quite a sizeable swingers culture which the Bogles & Geoffrey Chandler were involved in, among others, & it was a sort of open secret blown wide thanks to this case. The scandal that resulted from this case did much to change that culture, however.
I suspect the hydrogen sulfide poisoning theory is most likely correct. If it is, what a horrific case of wrong place/wrong time...

I agree. It could have been a "burp" of H2S that overcame them. It explains so many of the strange details, and the prudish hiker completes the story.

Thank you!!! The woman was 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒕?!! My God!!! Having your partner taken during this flagrant act of betrayal to become local gossip is unimaginable. It reminds me of Emmett Corrigan and his poor widow Ashley, who at least found herself a good man after suffering such a tragic loss.

It's likely that she already knew he was a cheat as this wasn't his first affair. From what I have read, these people were part of a bohemian subculture that rejected traditional sexual morality, affairs were common.
As a school girl in the 1960s there was a book on the bookshelves at home titled So You Think I did It by Geoffrey Chandler. I never read it but I think I asked my mother what it was about and can't recall the exact reply suffice to say I sensed it was an adults only book.
Themes like adultury, drug taking would've been very scandelous especially when involving "high society". It was an era where people pretended such things did not happen. They did!

The statement that due to the 36 hour delay in doing a forensic examination (of the bodies), all traces of any poisons would have disappeared.......IS VERY STRANGE. Don't authorities, in certain cases, open up graves in order that long-buried corpses can be tested to see if death might have been caused by poison ?
Maybe somewhere along the way the words "would" and "could" were transposed. Clearly some error was made by someone given the erroneous nature of the statement.

I was just over one month old when this happened. We lived in this area. I remember this being discussed when I was older. A real mystery. I am going that they were poisoned, an interesting video. Thank You.
I wonder if the company poisoning the water and causing the lethal gas emissions was stopped from continuing to do it?
I remember this case, or at least talk of it. It was 'forbidden fruit', the sort of thing adults would talk about, not realising the kids were listening. Also we lived not far from the Lane Cove River, so there was local interest.
Another great episode! Although the gas poisoning theory seems the most plausible, I would have thought that Dr Bogel would have recognised the smell. Still it's possible that a large sudden release of the gas may have caught them both by surprise.
My guess is that his big head wasn't thinking at the moment.
Hydrogen Sulfide makes sense. Pungent rotten egg smell at low concentration, but odorless at high concentration. Why? Because it is a powerful neurotoxin that kills your olfactory nerves before it kills you.
It can be odourless.

A brief start to exciting sex on a lovely cool night on New Year’s Day turns into a tragedy.
I said, "OH MY GOD" so many times during the river explanation. I've never heard about this case before and it is indeed "fascinating."
Interesting case. Sorry to be pedantic but as a Kiwi and VUW graduate, I wanted to mention the official name is Victoria University of Wellington or Vic for short. No one ever calls it Victoria University of Wellington College. In New Zealand, 'college ' means secondary school, unlike in the States where 'college' is synonymous with University.

I agree. Especially if they were sitting or lying on the ground. Hydrogen sulfide is heavier than air so it would be more concentrated on the ground.
I've gone through 3 wives due to toxic gas... It is just a theory though.
I think they were poisoned by the gases and it was already too late by the time they tried to flee. Chances are they were of a scientific-enough mind to realise what was happening.
If they were simply murdered by a jealous spouse or spurned lover, then even a scientist wouldn't go to all that much trouble and in an exposed, open area like that.
This is so heartbreaking. Babies/children and murder & the missing without ever getting justice makes me feel horrible. 💔🤦🏻♀️. It's awful what the families endured.

Lake Nyos had an erruption of gases that killed almost 2000 back in 1986.
I believe these illict lovers suffered a similar fate.
Toxic gases seems likely. If someone came along and saw them they could have had nothing to do with it but just covered them not realizing they were dead. Learning later they were dead, not coming forward out of fear of being blamed. Or just not saying anything out of fear even if the person knew they were dead. It's just not the strangest thing to me that they were covered up tbh.
I think that the greyhound trainer did admit (later) to finding the bodies in a state of undress and covered them up with whatever was to hand.
How do you have an alibi for poisoning ? You don’t have to be present when they consume the poison

I’ve never heard of a case where someone died of LSD, only a couple where someone committed suicide on it or after using it.
Yes, taking a lethal dose of LSD is almost impossible.

I’m thinking the most likely is the hydrogen sulfide gas. LSD doesn’t directly kill & it seems the woman’s hubby was fine with the’you do your thing I’ll do mine’.

Can you imagine being with a potential lover when all of a sudden you both start to experience the effects of deadly poison; you're both watching each other die, when you were just enjoying the sensual pleasure of each other's company. What a horrifying feeling to realize your past successes, your present enjoyment, and your future potential are being bitterly ended in futility.
I think the gas overwhelmed the lovers very quickly.

1962- Australia - Gilbert Bogle met nurse Margaret Chandler at a function. Margaret was already married but she liked Dr Gilbert Bogle. That was the start of the tragedy to follow. One day in 1963 the bodies of both Dr Bogle and Margaret Chandler were found half named by a passer by. What caused their deaths became a mystery and police wondered whether it was homicide or suicide or a drug overdose or poisoning ?
1963 Sydney Australia ....I remember that case from childhood.....My father use to attend these Sydney push/CSIRO parties .....I remember one day (a highly conservative and strictly routine man usually) climbed over the backyard gate ran down the backyard right past my mom hanging out the clothes screaming "They are coming ...They are coming" and dived head long into the cotoneaster bush......He disappeared to mom and my amazement......Nothing more ...He arrived home at 6.30 as he always did religiously ....sipped his two scotches ate dinner and went to bed.....Not a word was said...Oh dear.

The thing is if their deaths were an accident why were their bodies covered over and if someone did find their bodies why didn't they report them thats what i don't get
Maybe he or she thought they were sleeping off alcohol and just wanted to cover them up?
I can imagine someone who didn’t have a good relationship with police or didn’t want to get involved, maybe they weren’t very bright and thought they might be suspected if they reported them. Maybe they themselves were publicly drunk or otherwise breaking a petty law when they found the bodies.

That's funny cuz I, too, know that I just heard this story within the last wk or so! Howevr, I was thinking maybe I had just heard it from another TH-camr, but now that we know she had to re-upload it I'm thinking that it's more than likely here that I first heard the story after all. I think that the hydrogen sulphide explanation works best... they'd been drinking, felt horny and just focused on doing the deed. Anyone whose had the thrill of sex like this will tell you that they aren't aware of surroundings: it's how killer spouses sneak up on lovers!

Surely if gas from the river was the cause of death, other people would have been affected by this as well. Poison is a woman's weapon. My guess is Bogle's wife had enough of his philandering, and took them both out.
If such lethal gas leaks were occurring from the river bed, why were Bogle and Chandler the only two ever known to be affected, in an area known as a lovers' lane.
They led down on an area close to the river.
It was a still cool night.
According to people who had been in that area the previous afternoon their dog had returned from a play in the river and smelled foul. They could not get rid of the smell from the car’s seats. Evidently the river had been bubbling up it’s toxic gas many times before the lovers arrived. Just bad luck or just bad timing?
Maybe they should have stayed in the good doctor’s car but he liked these kind of outdoor assignations and for that they paid a tragic price.

Death is maybe a bit intense for such a thing. Just saying.
Who knows what their relationships were like. Abusive? Cold? Convenient? Divorce was more of a social stigma, people stayed together for their children. (Not that I’d want my husband with another woman when I was about to give birth.) They could have had 5 minutes at it and been faithful for the rest of their lives. The God/punishment thing is a pointless argument.
