Pro Acting Coach Breaks Down 17 Dying Scenes | Good & Bad Acting

  • Acting coach Anthony Gilardi analyzed some of Hollywood's most famous - and infamous - dying scenes. Reviewing movie deaths ranging from great to mediocre to downright terrible, he broke down what went right and wrong in the actors' performances.
Sometimes an over-the-top movie death works, and sometimes the dramatics are better kept to a minimum. According to Gilardi, an actor's approach to their character's death should always depend on the story they're telling. Using examples from classic movies like "The Godfather Part III," "Moulin Rouge!," and "Scarface," Gilardi pointed out common pitfalls that make it easy for any actor to bungle a death scene - even for Oscar-winning film stars, like Natalie Portman and Marion Cotillard, and veteran actors who have racked up dozens of on-screen deaths, like Sean Bean and Samuel L. Jackson. He critiqued the best and worst villain deaths, from the defeat of Commodus in "Gladiator" to Talia al Ghul's final monologue in "The Dark Knight Rises," and pinpointed why these deaths either resonated with audiences or fell short. And he compared the hits and misses of slow-motion deaths, from Willem Dafoe's famous arms-in-the-air scene in "Platoon" to Christopher George's slo-mo death by shuriken in "Enter the Ninja."

As a firefighter, I have had the humbling honour of being the last face someone sees on a number of occasions. This is spot on. People don’t move around or roll their head to one side, they don’t breath out a last word - they lie there and die.
You might hold their hand as a form of communication or comfort, but you’ll never know if they can actually feel that hold. To communicate with a dying person - look at their eyes, that’s the only part of them that is still living. And all of a sudden it stops.

I’m not even like a Tony Stark apologist or anything, I like him, but not as much as many others do.
But his death was perfect. He was exhausted. He was absolutely drained. He was practically fried. He just took on the force of the infinity stones. He couldn’t move or think. He has accepted his death from the moment he entered the battle.
    That death scene was perfect.

Tony's death felt so _real_ to me when seeing it I was really surprised. Not because I was projecting any emotional connection, but I was just watching RDJ act and was really impressed with his _stillness._ My grandfather was suffering from Alzheimer's for years leading to his death part of that is plaques, abnormal clusters of protein fragments, build-up between nerve cells in the brain. unlike some degenerative diseases where you are a sharp mind trapped inside your own body, it's like you're a consciousness trapped inside a computer with a progressively spotty internet connection. You're only able to take in so much when your brain gets "fried" like Tony's did.
Another thing is that one of the parts of death people don't think about especially when people see a fully dead body, is how _still_ it is; Why hikers who stumble onto bodies often think it's trash or a pile of clothes at first. It's bizarre to see a human body not moving at _all_ like that, you don't see it everyday outside of death.
and in relation to Tony, It's not that the dying person is necessarily too weak to move, so you get this start-stop, but there just isn't any energy, *period.* His movements struct me because of how minimal they were, because he was basically a corpse at that point, simply refusing to die from sheer force of will alone until he got the go-ahead. He was already pretty faded out by the time the others got to him, with just enough echos of energy to keep vaguely conscious. Him already starting from a place of stillness at that point in the scene and ending with his little remaining focus just _gone_ worked perfectly for me.
He couldn't THINK let alone communicate, he was so fried at that point, only being able to listen occasionally and wait for that thing that has been driving his existence at his _very core_ to be said; We're okay, We're safe. And when that was said, it was less of a choice and more of a completion of his sole/soul mission.

Tony Stark's death scene was beautifully acted. I love how he did not say much, and how the "light" in his eyes goes out as the light in the arc reactor does. Paltrow was amazing in that scene. I had a tear in my eyes more because of her performance than RDJ, who was brilliant, btw. The scene where they listen to his recorded message at the funeral is the perfect bookend for his character, as opposed to a long death monologue, IMHO!

One of my favorite death scenes so far is Haldir's death in the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, it left such an impression on me when I was a child, the mere question "what this all was for?" and the woe in his eyes while the camera shows us all the dead elves gives me chill and shivers. And I also really do love the muffled effect they used, like all we hear is his breath.

Elves are basically immortal, unless killed, so death is kind of a foreign concept to them, something they know about but don’t really have a lot of experience with, so the confusion on his face, the shock, and then the realisation and despair as he drops, all hit pretty hard. I love Craig’s acting, he’s great at campy stuff, but he’s also good at the serious, even if he doesn’t get a whole lot of opportunity to show it.

I talked to a dying man once. He mumbled a lot, seemed confused and was slow to respond. He was my grandfather, who was on his deathbed and no doubt they had pumped him full of drugs. The movies usually leave that part out. (Even so, a few days later when his eldest son was in the room and remarked to Grandma that "you always did what he told you", he was lucid enough to say his last recorded word, which was "bullshit!").

What I took away from Tony's death in Endgame was by that point he was pretty much fried. Like he was probably barely aware of what was going on, he doesn't speak, he doesn't seem to easily focus or stay focused on anyone. Tony was pretty much so far gone at that point he wasn't able to have any sorta "I'm I gonna die, do I want to die?" thoughts. He seems to be in a constant state of drifting, snapping into focus for brief moments when someone gets in his face or touches him but it doesn't last long. He is practically on autopilot and just waiting for someone to say "you can go".

You could see the fear in his face when he looked at Dr. Strange and saw him holding up one finger (the one possibility where they win). He knew at that point that if he went through with it he would die. At this point in the movie he had already made his decision and was just waiting for his loved ones to let him go.

I didn't really have an issue with Tony Stark's death. I feel like the acceptance came before the damage itself and after he snapped his fingers that damage was so profound that all he had left was some resistance to the inevitable. His wife giving him that permission to rest was what he needed. And as cheesy as this will sound, it's because my dad had multiple organs go from uncontrolled diabetes (please take care of yourself if you have that) and in the end, he had to be reassured that he could forgive himself for things he'd done in his life and go ahead and rest. He passed relatively quickly after that. So there's that realism as I see it.

I would say that I didn't have a problem with Robert Downey Junior's acting, but I had a problem with Iron Man's death. I only have a problem because of the writers in the first place, not because of personal attachment to the character. The writers made him out to be Moses, a super convenient miracle worker. The guy solved time travel, he learned how to use advanced alien technology that was centuries if not millennia ahead of Earth, in literally days (they had him make Ultron using the Tesseract in like less than 2 or 3 days I think), and he was operating spaceships (that Earth definitely never had) that went past the speed of light and hopped around the Universe, yet they don't let him make some kind of device to use the stones and absorb or insulate their energy without killing him. The urgency of Endgame never made any sense to me. As soon as they figured out time travel, they could have prepared and planned their asses off, they could have powered up and made back up plan after back up plan to use the stones once they got them, instead they went with the blind faith eyes firmly shut "let's hope nothing goes wrong and no one follows us back" and the desperate urgency of "we have to go now". No one was going to stop them, the quantum realm wasn't going anywhere, it's not like the people who had been snapped were waiting to be saved, or any other reason existed for their urgency. If you are trying to save half the population of the Universe, don't you want to be sure that you get that right? Then again, they really never should have even had the chance to undo the snap after Marvel created such a preposterously over powered Villain like Thanos. All he had to do was include ALL of the heroes in the half of the population of Earth (and the Universe) that got snapped, it's not like half the population of Earth dying means only half of the heroes die, all of the heroes can definitely die and just be part of the half of Earth that dies while normal average people take their places and stay alive on the living half. That or Thanos could have just wiped everyone's memory of the snapped people, and wiped all traces of the snapped people, so that the Universe would just go on with business as normal. Of course Thanos had to be another incompetent Villain with poorly explained motives so that the heroes could beat an adversary they really never should have had the chance of beating. It's so odd looking back how none of the Marvel films have any real stakes or true tension when it comes to the heroes, but then in the last 2 movies the writers went "Yeah, so let's kill off Gamora for good, then Black Widow for good, and then Iron Man for good, under random and dubious circumstances".

THAT TWIST AT THE END WAS INCREDIBLE

    • @mattpeterson3002
      @mattpeterson3002 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I liked the twist too, UNTIL, they placed the Bible next to the Quran.
You see, the movie implied that a divine force was SOMEHOW helping him survive.
As the viewer, DESPITE Eli dying, you will conclude that the Christian God MUST have helped Eli survive, in order to "Spread the Message." It's the only LOGICAL conclusion.
But then, when you see the Bible placed next to the Quran, you are left with only ONE possible conclusion:
The Christian God is NOT any more special or "true" than Allah, or any other God.
All that has been shown is that now a bunch of historical books have been saved.
This essentially negates the entire plot of the movie, which is that the God of the Bible is no more special than the any of the other authors whose books have been saved, like Shakespeare, Melville, Hemingway, etc.
You COULD choose to say that because Judaism, Christianity AND the Islam are Abrahamic religions, so ONE specific God COULD have preserved all three books. This would imply that all 3 religions hold the truth.
However, for THAT idea to have made sense, you would have had to also have Jewish, Christian AND Islamic characters in the film survive through impossible odds, and that did not occur.
Overall, an excellent movie, but in the end, it failed lofically in it's very basic premise.
I surmise that the reason that the producers/writers did NOT show ONLY The Bible, is because it would have caused an.enormous controversy.
For the record, I do not support any religious view over another as being the "Absolute Truth."

I've always felt that what he portrays is a person holding on through sheer instinct and willpower, and even the way the others speak to him, processing only simplistic ideas like "we won. You can go. We are ok." and that speaks to the inability to truly process complex ideas, let alone internalize a "do I want to die" conversation with himself. He's accepted it and he goes. For Natalie Portman, I figured Padme's motivation would be to stay alive just long enough, with her inner monologue being: "I'm about to die, I need to let them know their names."

Thank you for your fascinating insight into a common scene which is often so melodramatic as to lose its effect on the viewer.
The Denzel Washington and Joaquin Phoenix portrayals of dying remind me of something I read many years ago. It was a comment about a painting, perhaps from the Renaissance era, and it featured a beautifully dressed young woman who had just been stabbed in the abdomen with a dagger. The author wrote, "She has the slightly puzzled look of someone who realizes they have just been murdered."
I wish I could remember the name of the painting, because it spoke to a universal truth. For those who are murdered, there is often that moment of disbelief and a disconnect from reality, as if their sense of self is saying, "This cannot be happening."

I feel like this guy isnt taking the WAY these characters are dying into effect.
    - First, he says Caesar was stabbed in the heart, he wasnt, he was stabbed in the neck. Why does this matter? Because it means it is a slow and painful death, where he has to watch the man who killed him stare back at him while he dies. Was this scene great? Yes very. Just like he said. The problem tho is when you go to other deaths he criticized here, like RDJ, or Dafoe, Or Jackson, or the daughter from Godfather. All of them were fine for the movies they were in.
    - RDJ had already made his peace with his death, you saw that earlier, the rest was not about his "death" it was about the other characters realizing what happened and what he did.
    - Dafoe in Spiderman, he was stabbed in the gut, it is in no way an "instant" death by any means, and the fact that he did die so fast should tell you that it was meant to play out as a campy comic scene in where the villain has one last thing he has to say.
    - Jackson, the entire movie was a stereotype of that genre and therefore for him to play it out the way he did was perfectly acceptable. Had he taken it more seriously it would not have fit with the rest of the feel of the movie.
    - The daughter from Godfather, it was a shock to her that she got shot, she realizes that she did, but she doesnt understand why or how or what is going to happen, so her last moment is calling for her dad.
    - Portman in Starwars. Now I hate me some prequels, but not for this reason at all. She had her head straight forward, when someone dies they lose muscle control, so her head would naturally fall to the side, as far as the eyes closing, she "gave up" after Anakins betrayal, therefore she had already made her peace with dying, she was pleading for everyone else to forgive him. So her eyes closing is a simple gesture of this giving up and going to sleep process.
I am no flim actor or teacher, but this guy does not seem to take into account the films they are in before assuming his opinion on them.

RDJ, in his death scene, gave a little smile to Pepper just before he died. I read it as "are you surprised?" Or "we both knew it would end like this." As someone else mentioned in another video of youtube, he was also silent which was so "uncharacteristically non hyperverbal."

I think we can see the Tony's inner monologue a few moments earlier when he's about to go for the stones and looks at Strange like asking "Is this it?". So, I think he accepts his death at the moment he goes for the stones. When we see him completely fried, is just a closure
