Here (Greece) dubbing is not really as widespread as it is in a lot of other European countries. Generally, anything that is aimed towards children (or even all ages sometimes) is dubbed, and anything that is aimed towards adults is just subbed. Of course, there are exceptions to this (for example, the TV series Gotham has a Greek dub available)
@@marianmeletlidiscrap It all depends on population. Here in Belgium (flanders), and the netherlands, subtitles are the norm for everything except children TV and movies. Jessi 3005 look up who Genghis Khan is on google if you don’t know and then consider how American/westernised his character in the movie is.. Amongst many other things.
It’s interesting that both times it has happened for white people playing asian characters. Hollywood definitely loves to whitewash asian storylines and characters for some reason
Jesse Eisenberg plays Jesse Eisenberg in every role he does, not sure if anyone noticed yet. It´s that "akward guy", quick speech (very repetative pattern and vocal intonation), weird eye contact........come to think of it, I don´t think we´ve ever seen him actually act.
As an actor (or trying to be anyway), I find this stuff invaluable. Dunno about anyone else, but I find it fascinating how certain inflections and cadences can make up so much of a personality, and be so unique to each person.
Lol i love how he called out the Selena performance. That movie would have been better if J Lo didn't insert 50% of herself while trying to play Selena.
It’s interesting to see people wanna criticize it now because a lot of fans and even Selena’s own family feel that jlo acting wasfairly accurately. I think the movie was perfectly phenomenal and especially if you take a good look at the series they just did on Netflix I bet you’re gonna think the movie is better to
The fact that he was lauded for an excellent " acting performance " was absurd. Like most talentless Hip-hop artists who try to transition into acting- they essentially play themselves.
I really liked in this episode how he didn't just go through the academic part discussing the language, but could actually do some of it himself. You know your material sir.
Ben Kingsley’s father was of Gujarati extraction, and so was Gandhi. Kingsley’s family was part of the Indian diaspora in East and South Africa at the time of British colonialism, and so was Gandhi. That might help to explain why he was so good at emulating his accent and affectations. (Gandhi was educated in Britain, and as a lawyer in South Africa it would likely have benefitted to speak more like an Englishman, and more Indian when he was in India etc.)
Jackie Kennedy’s voice sounds creepy in this context on TH-cam, but I just remembered nice friend’s mom’s having very similar speaking patterns when I was a kid, very delicate and polite.
There are certain manners of speech that just fall out of style and/or usage after a certain period of time. Not accents - just ways of speaking that, in a modern context, would sound odd. A good example is the queen of England. She’s toned it down a lot in the last two or three decades, but in old clips of her, her speech sounds utterly bizarre.
Leo W - I remember thinking the same way about her sister, Princess Margaret. I haven’t seen any footage of her speaking in her later years but her younger voice was unattractive.
@@leow3696 A big part of it is the decline of the "mid-Atlantic accent", which dominated many populated areas of the US - especially "upper class" groups - and manifested itself heavily in movies and TV of the same era.

I wish they could do one with different Spanish-speaking accents. We'd have hours of material, beginning with the debated Colombian accent of Wagner Moura in "Narcos".
This stuff is the most interesting thing I've come across! I would love it if there could be more of these. I've actually watched the 3 episodes probably 10 times each!
Google phonetics and you can learn to read phonetically with the phonetic alphabet and then you’ll hear all the distinctions and be able to also read other dialects by phonetics so you also can change how you speak.
That Lincoln performance just blows me away every time I see it. I almost can't even watch the movie. Somehow DDL managed to reach "uncanny valley" territory while being (apparently) a real human being.
I can’t help it but he is one of those actors I just don’t like. I know he is talented, and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance in Cafe Society, but perhaps it’s what you say, seems to play himself. Much like how many soap stars in the UK are actors where a lot generally play themselves.
I'd argue Kristen Stewart is the best interpretation of Princess Diana I've ever seen done on film. Never been unable to recognize a famous person in a role until her performance. Simply stunning.
The Selena situation is a peculiar one. The family wanted to get this done as soon as possible. The movie is mostly highlights of her life through a rose-colored filter. Thousands of young women who really resembled Selena auditioned for the role. Jeniffer Lopez was cast based on being on her experience as an actress-albeit limited at the time, and her ability to dance. She looks nothing like Selena, but I shudder to think how much worse it would have been had a complete unknown been cast in her stead.
Jamie Foxx playing Ray Charles was mind blowing. He REALLY did Ray Charles justice in the movie. I've heard he's up for the role of Mike Tyson, and I think he's the perfect actor to do it.

It does make it weird for many of us to see the adverse reaction many people have to subtitles, we're all just so used to it.
Much, much, much, MUCH, much more of this. Please. More Erik Singer, more idiolects, accents, i want a master class (many of them) about how to sound certain ways, and what things to focus on to "nail" someone's sound. Great humour, especially in the editing of this video. Much.
Keith Hale pity you don't focus on shutting up.
Of course Streep is perfect. She studied at the Yale’s school of voice. She’s amazinggg
In her first big role at Yale, she didn't speak at all. She just had such presence, she blew everyone away.
you're talking about one of the best actresses of all time ;)
Meryl Streep sucks
She did so well in Julie and Julia! Because of her it’s my favourite movie
so i just found out that i make my s sounds with my tongue tip up when i'm talking in german (my native language) but with my tongue tip down when talking in english and i don't even know why i'm so excited about this
minholy I don’t either but I thought that was really interesting
ooo!! i tried that in swedish and korean and my tongue tip is always down, like it is in english. it might be because swedish and korean are my second and third languages respectively, but it's still something interesting.
You made me try it and I do tongue tip up in English and down in spanish!
The opposite is true for me
Up in Dutch, up in English for me.
"Who the f**k let this happen?!" I laugh so hard every time.
Yeah that was pretty good.
I don't get it?
Jessi 3005 look up who Genghis Khan is on google if you don’t know and then consider how American/westernised his character in the movie is.. Amongst many other things.
It’s interesting that both times it has happened for white people playing asian characters. Hollywood definitely loves to whitewash asian storylines and characters for some reason
This guy has such a developed sense of hearing, I can’t hear half the differences
Tristan Möller
Thats because english is not your first language
I'm a native speaker and I couldn't pick up on a couple of these. The wh sound doesn't sound any different to me for example
Frank Martin
Perhaps u need a hearing aid, because everyone can tell the diff when people annunciate the H in what when where why and white
Alana BananaCanada
It is nuanced to some, more apparent to others. It doesn't mean we have hearing loss or don't speak English well.
What are you talking about he was just saying cool whistle
Jesse Eisenberg plays Jesse Eisenberg in every role he does, not sure if anyone noticed yet. It´s that "akward guy", quick speech (very repetative pattern and vocal intonation), weird eye contact........come to think of it, I don´t think we´ve ever seen him actually act.
Actually what made him the worst Lex Luthor ever
Yes, he is pretty much evil Michael Cera
He sounds like woody Allen in everything
Exactly. He doesn't act. He reads aloud.
The same could be said for John Wayne....John Wayne only played John Wayne. Only the context of the movie changed.
As an actor (or trying to be anyway), I find this stuff invaluable. Dunno about anyone else, but I find it fascinating how certain inflections and cadences can make up so much of a personality, and be so unique to each person.
Same here. Go us 😂😂😂
Best of luck in your future endeavors!

My bad.
Point still stands, though 😊

Lol i love how he called out the Selena performance. That movie would have been better if J Lo didn't insert 50% of herself while trying to play Selena.
She has a hard time not showboating. It’s part of the reason I don’t enjoy her that much as an actress. She can’t seem to strip herself down.
It’s interesting to see people wanna criticize it now because a lot of fans and even Selena’s own family feel that jlo acting wasfairly accurately. I think the movie was perfectly phenomenal and especially if you take a good look at the series they just did on Netflix I bet you’re gonna think the movie is better to
@@nisha5669 her performance was never great

I think Marshall Mathers did a really really good job nailing Eminem's voice in 8 Mile, definitely deserves some recognition
stevenpelleriti09 I see what you did there xD
Mom's spaghetti
stevenpelleriti09 hey.... cool first name.
stevenpelleriti09 Wait, you mean he wasn't actually going for Slim Shady?
Listen @5:39 no way Gandhi would have sound like that?

And not even just Rami's accent interpretation, but the other three band members as well.

*Erik Singer’s* impression of Alec Guinness at 17:44 is worth seeing this video on its own. His insight is great and he is personally talented.

HAhaha dat attention span, though.
Keena Rdk It's a new subject every new minute (31 actors and a 29 minute video), and there's a lot of cuts zooming in and out of the expert guy. It's a long video made for short attention spans people like me
Keena Rdk same.
i never thought about the Ewan Mcgregor and Alec Guinness thing but now that it was pointed out it’s actually pretty crazy how much Ewan sounded like him
iirc Ewan once said in an interview that his Alec Guinness was "like a bad John Lennon impression"...
but it's a spot-on Alec Guinness ;)
When he was mentioning Ewan and Alec there I thought he would go for De Niro and Brando later on. Really wish he did.
And I love how he just WHIPS out an Alec Guinness impression in a second!
I did hate it, at first. But then realized his Alec impression was spot on!
Thinking the same thing.
To play do that with one of the most iconic characters ever played by one of the greatest actors ever is no easy feat.
I would love to see a video like this for the upcoming movie "The Disaster artist" James Franco vs Tommy Wiseau. That would be awesome
I'd like to see him try and guess just what the hell Tommy Wiseau's accent is using his amazing super knowledge powers.
Tsharli Foster definitely Polish. He sounds like every Polish-born American/Canadian family member I've ever known
Adam Sapa well then maybe he can just go into detail about all of his mannerisms. Like a video explaining how to do the perfect Tommy Wiseau impression
I'd just really like for him to do something Wiseau related
Oh hi mark
I would watch a tv show about accents with this guy as the host
Taylor Iserman I'd binge a season of it
I will always vote for more of these videos.
*Cunning Linguistics with Erik Singer*
gokinsmen well played sir. Well played ;)
I would watch this guy do anything.
Jamie foxx is an underrated actor, pretty impressive to be able to do that with your mouth the entire time incorporating it with the whole movements
He also had his eyelids glued shut which is a form of torture that I can’t even imagine. He just killed it, like Erik says it’s so fully integrated into his whole personality.
I never realized how pleasant Princess Diana's voice was
She seemed like a pleasant person as well... rest in peace
I would really love to see a video where Erik Singer himself takes on as many impressions as he can. This guy knows his stuff.
the abe lincoln part really had me thinking that was actually lincoln because that is EXACTLY what i always imagined his voice would sound like
And at 4:35 I'm sitting alone on my couch just hissing "sss ssssss" to myself. Now im weird lol
I've been trying at least a third of these accents. We're both weirdos 😁
For sure lol

Hello Amanda
As a Hispanic Linguistics major currently studying phonetics and phonology, this was really pleasing to watch. Great analysis Erik, and thanks WIRED for bringing him on for this Technique Critique series.
This is exactly what I study! I love when linguistics is brought into the public eye; everyone realizes how interesting it really is!
I wish they could do one with different Spanish-speaking accents. We'd have hours of material, beginning with the debated Colombian accent of Wagner Moura in "Narcos".
eisenberg only plays eisenberg. oh sure, the characters may be 'different', but its eisenberg. much like cera only plays cera, for the most part.

Agreed! He's very engaging
I do too, but his ear is WAY more attuned to some of these more subtle sound differences than mine are. Good for him. Interesting to watch.
I really like Jesse Eisenberg, but let's be real. Jesse plays Jesse in every role.
He gave an amazing performance in the Social Network tho (everyone did) even if it wasn't accurate.

I can’t help it but he is one of those actors I just don’t like. I know he is talented, and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance in Cafe Society, but perhaps it’s what you say, seems to play himself. Much like how many soap stars in the UK are actors where a lot generally play themselves.

But then again, casting someone who didn't have such a strong New York drawl and closer to TexMex could have helped
Jamie Foxx as Ray is unbelievable
