    I used to get up at 4 and workout and work on my discipline and mindset. This year hit hard, I've been falling to my old habits. I really need this push to wake me up and realize that life goes fast and a cant be wasting it a stupid things

    Im 28 now
    I realized yesterday
    That for 16 years I’ve been telling myself I will work out consistently and eat right , haven’t done up until now!
    I get back to it
    and quit killing myself with regret

    I know this podcast is directed toward men and boys, but we need to teach this core value to our girls too.

      girls need a healthy amount of masculinity too, both men and women are suffering massively from the imposed absence of masculine traits in modern society, balance is key for the psyche

    • @marianemashkalo4182
      @marianemashkalo4182 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Exactly! I don't know why it's directed to boys. Or whether it just seems that way. Because he always says 'men,boys'. It's a bit strange to hear being a woman,but I skip this feeling and listen further. Surely there's no intention to exclude women,he just talks from his own male experience. Us ladies are reasonable enough to hear what's universal and what's uniquely for men. I haven't heard anything a woman cannot adopt yet

    • @manaloola2018
      @manaloola2018 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@marianemashkalo4182 I wasn’t trying to say that there was an intentional exclusion of women, I just meant that you never hear this message directed at women/girls. It’s fine for him to direct it to men/boys. I wasn’t criticizing that. I was only saying that girls need to hear it too and they don’t. Was that not clear?

    • @manaloola2018
      @manaloola2018 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All the videos that are directed specifically to women and girls are how to do your nails and hair. In general, women and girls are not encouraged to develop their character, just their appearance and sex appeal. It there are such videos, I have not seen them.

      @marianemashkalo4182 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@manaloola2018 It was clear! :) BTW, that's rude to ask it that way. I was actually agreeing with you, but adding that us women can still use all that good advice without waiting to be directly addressed. I was not criticizing anyone too, neither you nor the message. Just adding my personal view, which aligns with yours 99%:) Of course it's fine to direct the message to men only, or women only, or both.
      Anyway, all the best and have a lovely day:)

    This is where the Public Schools are failing children - no discipline especially with the children who need it most - structure is a big part of it and learning responsibility towards other students and respect for their teachers. I hear of teachers dropping out of the system because of the school board not allowing discipline in the classrooms even to the point of violence!

      It’s insane that no one is talking about this.
      Teachers back in the day literally carried around a wooden paddle and/or a leather switch to enforce discipline among the students, even kids. You had no choice but to do the work, treat the teacher with the utmost respect, have decent manners, and maintained a diligent and productive class. If not, prepare to face serious consequences.
      Nowadays kids can do whatever they want whenever they want, no punishment or consequences and no string attached. No rules, do whatever, nothing matters except the hedonistic pursuit of instant gratification. Teachers are just there to be there and not raise and nurture a room full of great thinkers and learners.

    Hebrews 12:6-12:
    6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
    7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
    8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
    9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
    10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
    11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
    12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
    13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
    Proverbs 3:11-12:
    11 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

      If you take a step back and use your context clues, he was simply recounting a lesson that he was teaching his son about self discipline. He wasn't speaking ill of the homeless at all. He was trying to let his son know that if he practices self discipline, there's a much less likely chance he'll end up homeless due to his own decisions. Regardless of the delivery, every son needs to be taught this lesson. My dad never taught me this.

    I like a lot of Jockos stuff but the commentary about the homeless person…wtf?

    • @elmateo77
      @elmateo77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Most of the time when a person is homeless it's due to the choices they've made in their life. I'm not saying they deserve it, but it probably could have been avoided if they'd had more discipline and done the things they needed to do (or not done the things they knew they should avoid).

    • @theperfectprogression2294
      @theperfectprogression2294 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@elmateo77 there are many factors that lead a person to becoming homeless. There are some that have all the things that make it easy to stay afloat. There are others who struggle but stay afloat. Then there are others wjth the odds stacked against them. I live in a city with water cost rates that are three times that of the surrounding area and has old piping that leads to leaks that lead to folks paying excessive bills for water they’re not even using. They fall behind on the bill, water gets shut off and the bill turns into a lien on their home, which leads to not being able to pay their property taxes, which leads to foreclosure and eviction.

    • @theperfectprogression2294
      @theperfectprogression2294 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elmateo77 like I said, there are a lot of reasons folks end up homeless. Some folks are handed everything in life and still end up homeless, but there are quite a few folks in situations where they just keep getting kicked and a lot of them were born already down. And I’m speaking from a place of privilege. I grew up with a lot of blessings that other folks don’t have. But even then, I ended up disabled for years due to being attacked by police. Those kinds of things get in the way of getting jobs and because I was in constant pain, I really could have ended up on some hard drugs and not moving forward in life. I did the things I needed to stay afloat and excel even, but I shouldn’t have had to do certain things. If there was an even playing field it’d be easier to look at becoming homelessness as a sign of someone’s character or grit, but it’s not

    • @elmateo77
      @elmateo77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@theperfectprogression2294 Yep, like I said I don't think that anyone deserves to be homeless and I know there are a lot of unlucky things that can happen in life. But there are ways to structure your life and your finances to minimize the chance of those things happening, and to recover when they do. You might have to move across the country to get to an area where you can find a job that covers the cost of an apartment, or work overtime while studying at night to get qualified for a higher paying career, or maybe just stay home watching an old movie and eating ramen while your friends go out to the bar because you know it's better to invest the little spare cash you can muster so it'll grow over time instead of spending it on drinks. Most homeless people got that way because something bad happened to them, but if they'd done what they needed to do from the start they might have been able to absorb that misfortune without everything collapsing around them. It requires making sacrifices and that's usually hard especially when you see people who were born into money and never had to work for anything, but that's just life.

  • @muresandani

    His take on how to become disciplined boils down to "be disciplined". It's circular nonsense. I suspect that, because he's not educated in psychology and because he has always been this way he fails to realize he's suffering from an effect similar to the curse of knowledge. That is, someone who already understands a subject finds it hard to see how someone else can not understand it. He, being disciplined, thinks the solution is to "just do it". In other words, just be disciplined. Kind of like a french person telling you if you want to talk french you should just talk french. Stop making excuses, stop saying you don't know any words. Just talk french. Look at me, I can talk french if I want to. So just do it. Lmao.

    • @nemovetinari9063

      I agree. Although I'm a big fan of him, i absolutely agree with you. What I have found for myself is the following - Jocko emphasises on the value of discipline (self-control). People expect motivation to be the only fuel they need but that's wrong. But here comes the problem - after knowing the value of discipline how do you increase it. "Just do it" is a great logo but not a great advice. If you and read his books you will see that he as stoics has developed a personal philosophy - discipline for the sake of itself. Building character, fighting a war with the animal self. Now this may seem rather simple and dumb but it's actually an internal motivation which every psychologist knows its more important than the external. This source of motivation helps build habits, gain more confidence in one's willpower and close self-powering loop. "I clean the house not because i want to but because i want to build character, to expand the capability before reaching ego depletion" .That thinking helped me develop the habit of exercising, eating healthy and cleaning for 94 days now(i use an app to keep track). I have used that app for a long time and such consistent progress was never observed. He didn't think of anything unique. Just he tells young ppl that discipline is something that needs to be developed, helps many aspects of your life and is something to fight for. Hope I help in understanding his main thoughts.

      What is it about discipline that liberates itself from action while simultaneously still having a function? To become, one must change a state. If a man is, sees what he is, and wants to be what he is not, it is only by taking actions to become the new vision, that he can attain what he wants. Discipline only functions as a place holder for the abstraction of itself as a thought, or itself actualized in deed. Actual discipline only happens when it is practiced. It's not French, it's discipline.
      If you need to shift your identity around or create a colossal tower of thought in your mind to align your being with what it is to be disciplined then you have done nothing but placed a precondition on yourself to be disciplined. That precondition may be useful to you to get to the starting line, but is not discipline till the moment you commit to a course of action and make it happen, habitually. There is no amount of knowing that translates to an iota of doing. Discipline is done, not conceptualized into a finished product. Do it. 😊

    • @jurjenbavelaar1558
      @jurjenbavelaar1558 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I get your point, but I think your example is a bit out of line. Learning French is something you actually need something for; a book, a tutor, whatever. Being disciplined is something you can control, at all times, without any help. A big part of being disciplined is doing the things you don't want to do, knowing you should do them anyway.

    • @andrewbass7077

      I don't think that Jocko is suggesting that all you have to do is really decide to "be disciplined" and then, BOOM, all of a sudden you are a superhuman disciplined mutant. I think he is saying that in order to become disciplined, you have to choose to practice discipline. You make a disciplined choice right now. Then you do it again in 5 minutes. You won't always get it right but over time as you choose discipline more and more it becomes a habit and your capacity to make the disciplined choice will increase. Then 47,000 decisions later you'll wake up, look at yourself and realized that your choices to be disciplined have earned you the character trait of DISCIPLINE.
