2 things: -as a Navy vet, I needed the date complications on my watches because it's easy to loose track of days on with a watch(duty) rotation. - best micro brand: Christopher Ward, quality watches, Bel Canto and their Loupe magazine.
Enjoyed this a lot! Looking forward to see Thomas on the Fratello podcast. On a side note: best 1st date watch is always a Seiko. If she's into you without the fancy watches than you know she's worth it.
Some of my favorite complications were your worst. I love a (well executed) date window. I hate looking at my watch for the date only to realize it’s not there and having to pull out my phone. But I was flabbergasted when after saying a date window ruins a dial, to then hear that a power reserve belongs on the dail! I can’t make sense of that. No watch needs a power a reserve and it’s only kinda useful on a manual wind watch. You gotta take off the watch to wind it anyways so it’s no chore to take off the watch to look at the PR on the back.
I'm sorry to disagree, but power reserve on the caseback is the smartest of positioning - you don't need to know it during the day. You check it before you put the watch on your wrist and in exchange you can keep the dial clean and symmetrical.
@@excention7338 I prefer not to wind it unless it's necessary. I don't think you do good for the movement, but I also find it part of the experience to see it running for a long time with no manual intervention. But each to their own 😊 Sidenote, to me the moonphase and the helium valve are way more useless features 😂
The reliability, robustness, and ease of servicing of Omega's 1861 movement was the difference between me purchasing the Speedmaster Professional over the Zenith El Primero. I think when asked, a lot of people will say that they chose the Speedmaster because it is an enduring watch that has stood the test of time over many decades.
@@Nudel-nc1cpFrom what I've gathered, the El Primero movement is, in general, a great movement. However, when I was considering my first luxury watch and comparing the Speedmaster's 1861 movement to the El Primero movement, it seemed as though the El Primero can be a bit fussy since it runs at a higher frequency of 36,000 bph (i.e. subject to more wear over time) compared to the 21,600 bph of the 1861. I also read that getting a watchmaker to service an El Primero would be much more expensive than servicing an 1861 movement. I'd bet that most people probably have no issues with their El Primero, but I would rather spend thousands of dollars on a movement that is extremely robust and easily serviceable by most watchmakers. If I had the choice of purchasing an 1861 caliber Speedmaster Pro or a 3861 Speedmaster Pro, I'd still go with the 1861. The fact that I can pop open my Speedmaster's caseback and regulate the 1861 movement (which cannot be easily done with Omega's proprietary 3861) is invaluable to me.
I really enjoy the day date on my watch, he said you can see the day and date on your phone or computer ... you can also see the time on your phone and computer. If that's the case why do you need a watch?
Fair point, but most people check the time a lot more than they check the date. So I'd personally rather have a dial that looks great all the time than a compromised dial design that's only useful on occasion. -Thomas
The main point for me to have a wrist watch is NOT to use my phone or computer for that 😂 If I look at the phone there is missed calls, emails, youtube etc. Sometimes you just want to be an 80’s kid again.
Agree - Tudor’s handset is just terrible. And it’s a very lazy feature as they just slap it on everything and call it “design language.” It works on the Pelagos line to a degree because of the square markers but it’s awful on the Black Bay series.
I used to hate the Tudor hour hand, but then it grew on me. It's like a less antiquated variation on the Mercedes hands, and very tooly. On the other *hand,* I too dislike sword hands. Not just aesthetically, they're so bad they make the reading of time difficult for me. Worse than stick hands, which I quite like.
Ok nobody asked me but I am super bored, I agree with the date window, but it's also useful... I agree with the power reserve, but also on the dial, makes the dial too busy for nothing really useful Best rolex the Explorer II polar orange gmt hand Best microbrand Fraer watches Best to pick up girls, lol, they do not care about watches dude, but I'll say a watch that can open a conversation without saying you're a rich prick so... i'll take a Rolex oyster perpetual Mickey Mouse. Best Cartier, the Tortue Mono Poussoire salmon dial just amazing. Best Logo, breitling. Worst handset is for me the mercedes logo with no mercedes logo, so just a round shape. (yes Nivada Grenchen Antartic i'm looking at you). Best chrono, I do like the avigation big eye. Ok bye :)
Agreed - and not just for their watch designs and execution. Their customer support is unparalleled and backstory is really unique (former teachers who moved to NYC and have their own watch brand).
1.) Date windows are great on some and not great on others. Depends on how they are shown, framed, etc. Datejust looks amazing, so does tudor black bay pro and the omega smp and AT, along with sportier pieces. Also if they are at 3 vs at 6. But when it comes to dressier pieces like GS, cartier, etc, things are so much better without a date window for purposes of pure symmetry and dial aesthetics. Dates also flow better when the indices are dots or batons, but don't work well when they are numbers. 2.) My choice of best rolex is the DJ36 with fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet. The ultimate icon. But I do love the explorer 36 and gmt master 2 as well for sport watches. Find them a lot cooler and more interesting than the sub by far. 3.) Best cartier model is the O.G. tank normale and tank Louis (with manual wind movement). Me being a pauper, I went with the Tank Must Large. 4.) Love the tudor Snowflake hands! And the indices on the pelagos too! The sword hands on my IWC Pilot's Chronograph 41 also look great. 5.) Speedy is the Chronograph GOAT. I chose my IWC over Speedy cuz I already had an Omega SMP 300M Diver and wanted to diversify. But Daytona is just so overhyped, impossible to get, and a total flex piece.
Worst complication : pulsometer on the back of the last jazzmaster face 2 face. It is a good technical watch why à pulsometer and why taking it off to see the other side. Best Rolex : Milgauss Blue Z for its originality, an excentric dial color and a spirit of "résistance" and because of it's outdated dusty magnetic field handling. Plus it doesn't have Mercedes hands. SkyDweller is good too. Best micro brand : Huge flight against Formex for its technology and Artya for the design. Formex is objectively the best. Not even a 6 o'clock date window, Tom? Also, Balazs is right about women are most probably aloof when it comes to watches, but those who know are best avoided cause they're going to be the type of girls that will be hard to maintain--financially. LOL!
It is but is not a shock that a Fratello Fanbois was hyping it. You say one bad word about Omega on Fratello and the owner Robert Jan brings the wrath of god upon your head. Had to leave that cesspool.
