    I join my friend @TeddyBaldassarre at New York City's Bucherer store; possibly the largest watch store in the world! There's one watch brand in particular I want to focus on in our visit, and it's a watch brand known as "The Poor Man's Rolex."
    We're checking out Tudor watches and where it fits in the strata of brands right now.
    Do you have a Tudor in your watch collection?

      Historically it's a watch for plebs, lately it's been trendy to say you own Tudor, G-Shocks and the like but rarely do you see guys like Kevin wearing these brands unless a camera is in there face. It will pass like all trends.

    Tudor are killing it at the moment. At this moment in time I think Tudor could be cooler that Rolex. If I see someone out in a Rolex, it doesn't mean they're a watch person, some people buy them for the status, cause it's the only brand many people know. If I see someone wearing a Tudor, I'd be pretty confident they're a watch person.

      it is in the context where you're attempting to flex a brand name which is known for being expensive and deemed "you've made it" but can't yet afford it so you buy a Tudor.... i personally sit in the middle. I still think it's somewhat of a "poor mans rolex" but at the same time also think Tudor has distinguished themselves quite a bit over the years as their own thing. They're a little too boxy and not as refined for my personal taste but the 58 925 i have to admit is quite sexy

However earlier this year I just got over it - the constant interruptions from Siri, the constant pings - I use my Apple Watch now for sleep and for working out. I one day decided I wanted to try something different. So, I bought a replica quartz Cartier (Ballon Bleu - yup I said it replica *LOL*). Then I fell in love with it. I didn't even know the difference between Quartz and Automatic - so I saw a few videos and wanted to try the "real" watch then. So I got a rep Aqua Terra to see the movement and that was my intro. Before I knew it, I have now an authentic Rolex OP 26mm (immaculate condition from the previous owner with the full set - I have asked to be on the waitlist for a 36 or 31 OP Pink, then came a Hamilton Khaki Field Auto *lol* for the range trips and work I saw it while trying on the BB58, since I loved the ballon bleu so much that was why there came the Tudor Claire de Rose, then the Royal 34mm that was a good deal from a dealer, then a Seiko presage, my next will be the BB58 and I used to hate a diver but I just loved the blue and it how it looked on my wrist. I have more on the wishlist - and I love deciding early morning in the day what I will wear and sometimes I change before dinner *lol*

      The BB58 is such a great everyday uni-sex watch. My partner steals it from me all the time. Would be a great pick up. Tudor Claire de Rose is an interesting watch as well. I was thinking of gifting her a Ballon Bleu soon but in the interest financial responsibility, I might start her off with the Tudor. It was my mistake to take her with me to one of my recent trips where I picked up a Zenith Chronomaster Sport, because she found her grail watch - a Breguet Reine de Naples with MOP and diamonds, coming in at $38k or so? Lol we'll work up to it...

I love that your partner and you share a common interest. I will say my Tudor Claire de Rose - it had the two things I realized - 1) the shape of the Ballon Bleu or close enough to me with the comfy strap that reminds me of the Cartier Panthere (didnt like that one was a little too boxy for me in a not good way)

      What makes it collectible now as opposed to before? Vintage Tudor subs have been on the rise for years. And who cares how a watch stacks up against another watch especially when comparing price points. All that should matter is if you like it or not. I get just as much enjoyment from my Seiko 5 on a cheap NATO strap as info from my glashutte senator which is 100 times more expensive.

    I got started with a Longines myself - I’d still argue they are the best entry level watch over Tudor due to their own heritage and design language. I love what Tudor is doing as well, but I’d place them as a second watch purchase more than a first watch.

    • @shiznuts
      @shiznuts ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on what you call 'entry level'. Maybe 'entry level' for a premium brand with notes of luxury, sure.
      But anything can work like a gateway drug... be it an inexpensive Quartz Casio or Timex or great sub-1k mechanical watch choices from the likes of Seiko or Tissot, both as well with great history and are well-established & well-regarded brands that are very accessible to get into as a first watch.

    • @alvinlim2578

    I always wonder what the sales figures of Tudor would be if you could actually get any Rolex you want at sticker price. Honestly, I think the current sales figures of Tudor are primarily driven by aspiring Rolex buyers who simply can't get their hands on one. I don't see Tudor as a stand-alone brand, but still as the affordable alternative to Rolex, just like Wilsdorf positioned it. And honestly, I think the management of Tudor and Rolex are still purposefully positioning the brands like that. Tudor's existence is completely dependent upon the artificially created scarcity of Rolex.
