STEP By STEP Guide To Training Your Dog To Come Every Time!

  • A perfect recall command is the dream of every dog owner! Follow our tips and tricks and your dog will come every time you call them! Teaching your dog to come when called is a lot of work, but if you train enough, you and your dog will live the best life possible!
To start this process, we recommend using a leash and collar. We slowly work on conditioning your dog to learn what the word “come” means. Make sure you start off with short distances, leash in hand, and in easy low stimulation environments. Over time, you can start to make this more difficult! Being further away, increasing the distractions, and dropping the leash are all ways to make sure your dog really understands and advances on their come command.
Once you feel your dog has a good understanding of the come command, we recommend you introduce a long line. We sell 50 foot and 100 foot long lines to our clients, but some clients make their own! The goal of a long line is just to keep your dog safe from running away. If you say come, and your dog ignores you, you can safely stop them if they run away.
It is important to treat the long line like it is invisible. This means that you don't pick up the long line and reel them in to you like a fish. If they try to run away from you, you can simply step on the long line and give them a correction. Eventually we will work away from the long line, but do not rush this process.
Speaking of corrections, let's get into more details on what this is supposed to look like. You need to first make sure your dog has a good understanding of any commands before you decide to correct them. Our come command correction is designed to remind a dog to walk towards us. If they completely ignore us or run away from us when we say “come”, we will first say “no” while walking towards the dog. Once we get to them, we will pick up the leash with two hands. Walking backwards, we will give 2 tugs towards us pairing the tugs with a verbal “come” and then add one more tug up for sit. You do not need to take them back to their original position like we do with our stay commands.
When we say off leash, we typically focus on three main areas. Off leash in the house, off leash in a fenced yard, or off leash in an unfenced area away from home. Obviously some of those locations are harder than others! In order to work on the come command in unfenced areas or at dog parks, we recommend using E collars for many dogs. E collars are completely safe if used and acclimated correctly. We do not use E collars on untrained dogs, and you need to make sure your dog knows everything before you try one out. The acclimation process does take some time, but once your dog feels comfortable wearing one, it is an amazing tool that can get your dog the freedom they deserve!
We recommend Dogtra e collars and our favorite is the Dogtra Arc. You can read about it here: amzn.to/45yXDdG
They come with a vibrate and a correction function. The vibrate is used for most dogs, and it represents the come command. We will get our dogs used to feeling the vibrate and understand that it means to come back to their owner!! On the other hand, E collars also have a correction function. This is not a shock, it is a muscle stim that is highly adjustable! We always recommend trying the collar on yourself before putting it on your dog so you can see that it does not hurt!
Where you use an E collar or not, you need to make sure you are following the most important rule! Be 100% consistent! You need to follow a good proofing plan, practice everyday, and make sure you are able to discipline your dog if they decide to not listen to you! By doing that, your dog will have the perfect recall command!
Our Dog Boot Camp and our In-Home dog training programs are highly customized and designed to give you and your dog the best life possible. I love you guys at Suburban K9 so much. My Dogs trainer was Liliana Caprano here in Philly and she was just a literal God Send. My dog and I have such an amazing relationship now thanks to the fact that there isn’t anymore crazy behavior from him that stresses me out lol. I was even able to teach him so many more tricks because he no longer just ignores me. This place saved me from sinking into the deepest depression of my life because a bad behaved dog can definitely affect a persons mental health. So Thank you Suburban K9 for Liliana and her amazing skills with training my dog. We love you Lily.

Good point Heather! We train a lot of dogs with praise only, but that method is much harder for people to emulate from watching a video. Many dogs need to learn to be motivated by praise but almost every dog is motived by food from birth. The advantage of using only praise though is you don’t have to phase it out like you do treats. Thanks for watching!!!

I don't use treats. Some instructors prefer treats as positive reinforcement.

Exactly! The times we do like to use treats for come are with very young puppies and with incredibly nervous dogs. For your average dog they should enjoy being praised by their owner and that should be enough! Thanks for watching!

It's wonderful that you've taught your Sheltidoodle marker words like "yes" and "good boy." However, the association with treats is a common behavior, especially in dogs that have been positively reinforced during training. Here are some tips to manage this situation and encourage your Sheltidoodle to respond to markers without always expecting a treat:
    Randomize Treat Rewards:
Instead of providing a treat every time you use the marker word, try randomizing the rewards. Sometimes give a treat, and other times, offer verbal praise, petting, or a favorite toy as a reward. This helps break the direct association between the marker word and treats.
    Variable Reinforcement:
Implement a variable reinforcement schedule. This means rewarding your dog intermittently rather than every time it follows a command. Dogs tend to stay motivated when they are uncertain about when they will receive a reward.
    Use Life Rewards:
Incorporate "life rewards" into your training. Allow your Sheltidoodle access to activities it enjoys, such as going for a short walk, playing with a favorite toy, or receiving attention, as a reward for responding to the marker word.
    Fade Out Treats Gradually:
Gradually decrease the frequency of treat rewards while maintaining the use of marker words. Over time, your dog may become less reliant on treats and more responsive to verbal praise and other forms of reinforcement.
    Combine Verbal Praise with Treats:
When your Sheltidoodle responds to the marker word, use verbal praise enthusiastically along with the occasional treat. This reinforces the idea that positive feedback can come in various forms.
    Teach New Commands:
Introduce new commands or behaviors and use the marker words for those. This can help shift the focus away from treats associated with specific commands, providing a fresh start for training.
    Be Patient and Consistent:
Changing behavior takes time, so be patient and consistent in your approach. Consistency is key to reinforcing new patterns of behavior.
Remember that positive reinforcement is a powerful tool in dog training. By varying the rewards and gradually reducing reliance on treats, you can help your Sheltidoodle generalize the marker words to different situations without always expecting a treat. This approach fosters a more balanced and motivated response to your commands.

Our dog is a RUNNER, he zooms off and he's fast like a cheetah lol. If we run towards him he takes off. So we walk away from him and he follows us and then we try to catch him from there. We live in an area with townhomes and no fenced yards so we can never have him off leash. If we let go of him he takes off. He does not stay. German Shepard Great Dane mix. He's amazing at following sit and stay in the house. He'll even come to us if we whistle for him but outside he's a different animal.

It really depends on the age of the dog. With a young puppy (less than 16 weeks) we would probably use a treat. We would show them the treat and lift it over their head while saying sit. With an older do we would probably just use very soft pressure on their rear end while saying sit.

We use e collars for deaf dogs all the time and it works really well! We also like e collars for ensuring your dog can "hear" you when off leash. Many good dogs get hurt because they are a little too far from their owners and can't hear when their owner is giving them direction. Thanks for watching!
