I’m a hard rock guy but this is the simply the best song ever written
And do you know why? It speaks to something. What?
Correct
Good for you! You’re not the first person who has said that! I wish I had one thousandth of Glen’s incredible talent.
Paraphrasing......if he was only a guitarist, he would be talked about among the greatest of all time. If he was only a singer, with his soaring vocals and deep emotional timbre he would be counted among the best. The fact he was both made him irreplaceable, and one of a rare breed.
The fact that Eddie Van Halen wanted to play/take a lesson from Glen proves his brilliance at the art.
@@anthonymariani3793 Van Halen was a mook idiot
@@tomtom6319 Really? Then I want to be a mook idiot too.
@@tomtom6319 Really, he was a master and innovator.
@@tomtom6319 I doubt Glen would agree with you, but to each his own.
I seemed determined to make myself cry daily by finding all the versions of this song.
Sarah Tensile me, too 💔😭
Sarah Tensile I’m totally the same xx
Omg!! I thought I was the only one!! I have heard this song a million times throughout the years, however, I could take it or leave it..but hadn't heard it in years when I was watching Netflix Ozark show that this song was playing during one of the scenes, I automatically felt a warmth and became obsessed with this song..then felt sad that he was gone, but his songs truly live on..now I am a Glenn Campbell fan and not afraid to say it!! Whew got that off my chest!
Me too!! (53 year old bloke from Essex UK!)
Me too😂
So many have done this song, but when he sings "I need you more than I want you, and I want you for all time" I get choked up. Maybe the best lyric line ever?
Simplemente hermosa musica recuerdo de mi infancia great singer
I know exactly what you mean, great, great line.
A Smith I
Agreed- A beautiful line.
Jim Webb....what an incredible songwriter. And Glenn Campbell, one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Such a haunting melody and beautiful lyrics. One of my favorite songs.
One word - CLASSIC guitar work & a great voice. The man is EPIC!!! He is missed.
He is the best. Perfect pitch...and the guitar work: perfection.
Jimmy Webb, the genius behind this song, on piano. Two musical geniuses collaborating, it really does not get better.
Elton John - Bernie Taupin like.
And Jim Gordon on drums (original recording). He just passed away last week, still in prison. A tortured soul.
Watch the interview with Alice Cooper on Glen’s death. Touching and he really expresses what a highly respected huge talent he was in the music industry. Eddie Van Halen asked Alice if he could hook him up with a guitar lesson with Glen. Glen wa on guitar for Sinatra’s Strangers in the Night recording.
Pretty sure that's not Jimmy Webb on piano
One of the greatest versions I've ever heard. That solo he broke into is incredible. This backing band is awesome and I love the groove they laid down.
Check out the Jools Holland version from 2008, that is the best solo.
@@yandman26 Appreciate it. I definitely will.
It's impossible to describe how good this live version is. That bass and kick drum driving the backbeat, Glen's silky baritone...the impeccable guitar. Damn. Just unquantifiable.
I forgot to say RIP Glen- I loved you so much since I was 9 yrs old when my mum who has recently passed bought me your live in capital city album.. seems like a lifetime ago but my love of your voice and guitar has stayed with me my whole life. I know you will never read this but I loved your talent from such a young age. RIP my friend. You will never be forgotten by many including me. You were a beautiful sole.
Goodby Mr. Rhinestone, enjoy being in Heaven and I cant wait till I see
and hear you performing for God Almighty Himself. Loved all your songs
and listened to them as much as possible while I was driving a truck
across our Great Nation. God Bless you and your family, thank you for
the Memories!!!!!
Thank you.
YES 💯❤
My favorite song of his and I'm sitting here crying for more reasons than 1. I was a singer also, and I have beginning stages of Alzheimer's brought on by a different main illness and the meds I have to take , and right now, this song is making my heart sing and break at the same time. RIP you beautiful man.
I took am suffering from early Alzheimer's I only hope that I can walk the walk and talk the talk that Glen did for us as a rolee model and by God;s grace and love I will, thank you Glen and his family!!!! May God blss the Campbell family!!!
I'm sorry to read about your illness, and pray for you.
I am so sorry to hear of you illness. Hang in and turn to prayer...and good music like Mr. Campbell's
You'll be in my prayers.
God Bless ~
One of the most beautiful songs ever made RIP Glen .
Thanks to Jim Webb.
@@lancebaker1374 absolutely, webb gets credit for writing it. But credit glenn for bringing it to life
Favorite song. My Dad was a lineman . Miss you Dad. R.I.P. Mr. Campbell .
Goosebumps, just goosebumps. Glen and Jimmy Webb created one of the greatest Americana songs ever!
Yes, goose bumps
Never will there EVER be this type of talent in country music!!! Too much smoke and mirrors in today's stuff!!.. Rip GC!!!
That is a great American song, by a great America to the unsung heroes who keep the electricity running. Let's raise a glass to the Salt of the Earth! Many thanks Glen, May God meet you at the Gates and peace be yours for eternity.
Close, but no cigar. The song is about the Linesmen - The people who maintain the telephone networks on those long stretches of country roads miles from anywhere. Its about the sheer loneliness of not seeing his partner for days at a time.
Linemen work the power lines , high voltage some the the most dangerous work in the world. They travel all over the country and are away from their loved ones risking their lives for the job. It's not telephone work he is singing about its calling home
According to Wikipedia, Jimmy Webb said it is about a telephone lineman.
It is -- 'hear you in the whine' is about the whine of the wires out on the lonely road -- so much time to think!
He 'drives the main road' -- handles the big miles, has long periods on his own, checking the lines
It's about a left tackle that plays football for the Wichita Wolfpack.
I grew up listening to my Mother's album, " Glen Campbell's Greatest Hits ". This was the early 70's. What a fabulous album! I am a hard rock fan to the core but appreciate many different genres of music. I'll say it right here and now, " I Love Glen Campbell "! What a monster on the guitar and a tremendous vocalist! He may have had his personal struggles over his lifetime but he was a true gentleman at his core. God Bless you Glen Campbell. RIP.
Likewise. Same on all counts
I was born in 1959 and have had exposure to a lot of music, there are certain songs that have a melody that lasts a life time and this is one of them, Thanks Jimmy Webb and all the artists that have ever performed this song.
This song was a hit when I was a child. I lost my dad at an early age, and this song always reminds me of him. Thank you, Mr. Campbell, for such a beautiful and moving song. RIP
And thank Jimmy Webb too😊
Im just barley old enough to remember the Good time hour ..great days . I remember lots about Glen . He was a kinda of a local hero as we are from the same part of the world. World Class guitar player and singer ...I got my first Ovation guitar because that's what Glen played . A pleasure to share the earth with Glen for a while .
The perfect song for these bizarre times. I listen to this and there’s no virus air a couple of minutes. Glen thank you❤️💪🇺🇸
I never get tired of this song❤. One of my all time favorite songs❤
Another piece of my childhood memories fading away.😢 The Most High will enjoy your songs for ever! Rest in peace brother Glen
My favorite of all time ! Was just a kid when I first heard him on Smothers Brothers show. Was so good, he had his own. He'll be missed, yet remembered for all his one of a kind music/style !!
One of the best versions I've ever heard of this epic classic. The man is truly legendary.
One of the true iconic legends of music is finally at peace......Gonna miss the Rhinestone Cowboy.....🎸Rest well, sir, and thank you for everything....
The world will Never be the same without Glen
Technically, it will never be the same without anyone.
He's at peace now. And doesn't have to remember anything. RIP Glen Campbell. Love your music always will
This is how I remember him. RIP, Glen Campbell. Thank you for the memories.
One of the greatest singer/songwriter/performers ever. We've surely lost a treasure in this man, thankfully we'll always have the memory of him and have his songs...
Rest peacefully Mr. Campbell, you're Home and Whole now...thanks for all the wonderful memories and music you left with us.
I never forget where I was when He died,,, on Aug. I was 300 ft up in the air commissioning a wind turbine in West TX ,,one of the other commissioners was playing this song, and I said hey good song as I was repairing the generator and he told me that Glen Campbell had died .....this song is embraced by most everyone working in the electrical and wind industry and the timing of this will always be a great memory
This song is so good , I don't even have words to describe. Love you Glen Campbell!! RIP!
RIP Glen. You were a down to Earth guy that will be missed. Hope you and my Dad are up in heaven talking again like you used to before he passed away.
Thank you for all the wonderful music, you Blessed us with 😇😇
RIP
Amazing artist and Christian man!
He gets no respect for his religion. But yes, as a musician, he was excellent.
second that.
In your books he obviously gets no respect for his faith in God, in spite of a human and therefore imperfect life. It bothers you (irritates you) that I mentioned it, that is why you had to say something. That is important for you to note about your own journey in life. Have hope!
Bill Planey Glen is now with " his " and our Lord Jesus. RIP Glen.
Grew up watching his TV show in the 60s. Glen Campbell was a class act a great entertainer. His music will live on forever.
Greatest pop/country musician, ever. What a huge talent in every aspect of his music. RIP.
One of my favorite songs. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert back in the late 70's. A great and memorable evening.
R.I.P Glen Campbell loved your singing you will always be a legend xx
And I need you more than want you! And I want you for all time!
Just beautiful. Superb tune expertly performed. Nothing better.
Thanks for your beautiful music, Glen! We'll always love you, brother. Say hello to Jerry Reed!
Absolutely love this song - the lyrics are incredible and so is Glen’s playing.
Gawd, it's been decades since I've seen one of those old Mosrite guitars. RIP Glenn, you were a great one.
Just wanted to express my deepest sympathy to all of Glen's family. He brought so much joy to everyone in the beautiful music he created and songs he sang. He will always be alive in my memories and may this true legend RIP bless his heart. xx
There will never be an other one like you Mr Glen Campbell all these years of your great music can never be replaced. We love you dearly. God bless you RIP
I'm from New York City and up here we usually don't listen to Country music. But, this song and Rhinestone Cowbow and the songs of Kenny Rogers, Garth Brooks, and Dolly Parton and don't forget Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette have always been loved in New York. You know what...we do love Country music up here. I realized that in the middle of this comment.
great memories of the great talented man Glen Campbell.....rest in peace you will never be forgotten your music will always be played somewhere on this earth.........
Goose bumps.. Glen's arrangements are absolutely brilliant..the quintessential musicians musician.. Rip my friend..
Blimey - how long has Austin City Limits been bringing us great concerts ?...not only from people that we know and love, but people that we would never have otherwise heard of.........
My heart breaks at his passing. This will always be my favorite song of his.
RiP Glen - we loved your music and your soul. The best line ever in song that most people in love can relate to at some time
" I need you more than I want you And I'll want you for all time" -- Brillant
That Solo was amazing I miss you Mr. Campbell but I am so happy that your suffering has ended you were such a class act
Such an iconic man & music.
RIP Mr Campbell. Thank you for your music from here in England, UK.
Holidaying in the south of France in the early 1980's, my dad had a Glen Campbell cassette of which this song was played many many times with many many happy & good memories. Another music genius gone to heaven. RIP.
R.I.P. Glen You left us with great music and memories that will last forever. You will be missed.
Thank you Mr Glen Campbell for a lifetime of great songs and entertainment may God be with you see you soon
Glen Campbell was one of many that made me want to play the guitar, A superb musician
Saw him in Houston Tx. 4 years ago, awesome show,i have been a fan since i was a child and i never got to see him in concert,i was 46 years old when i finally got to see him and he took me back to my childhood, thank you Glen ,you get to finally rest.
This guy had the perfect fit of voice, skill, style, personality, and evolutionary place in time. At least for me. He is part of my life memories. I have been thinking about him so much over the last few years, after the documentary about his disease. He will be dearly missed.
Not a big country music fan,but liked his music,i can remember as a kid sitting in the chair with my grandmother watching his show.He is a true rags to fame story.
My favorite version of the song. Sounds awesome. !
So sad Glen Campbell, is gone from this earth!! May you be Singing in the Heavens forever !!
His is. Believe it...
I learned to play on on a Mosrite guitar 'Ventures' model. I owe that guitar a lot. Brilliant performance by Glen!
Is that the model he’s playing? Looks like an old Teisco,or Aria from Japan. I have a similar guitar.
This song has always made me cry....RIP 🙁😢
Brave man, kept on rockin whatever life threw at him. Sleep well, you will be missed but your music will live on forever.x
Glen had Perfect Pitch in his voice. I told a co -worker he had passed and we both started singing Wichita lineman, which was recorded like 50 years ago. Galveston, everyday housewife, rhinestone cowboy, the theme from true grit. etc. That man had more talent in his little finger than even Elvis. He was the Mike Tyson of the Singing world. God Bless him. RH DSD
RIP, genus. You will never die. Your music will play until the Earth is gone.
Thankful for all of the linemen and linewomen who fix our electrical wires in every state in our awesome country !!!!!!!
I REMEMBER THIS, I was 16 years old. I loved Lineman song when I was a toddler.
Our prayers and sympathy go out to his family during their time of loss. Glen will be truly missed by so many. Never to be forgotten. One of the best! RIP 😭💔
Yes, most definitely. Rhinestone cowboy was my favorite song.
One of my all time favorite songs. He was a class act. RIP, Glen.
What a beauty... the song, what an artist... the man. Rest well Mr. Campbell.
When I was in the service Glen got me through the dark nights, rip.
One of the most beautiful love songs covered by one of the best artists ever.
Damn we are getting old.. Wasn't this just yesterday? RIP. We will miss you!
Yep, that's a good un..RIP Glen..your music lives on. Great video..thanks for sharing.
Magic. The man was a legend. LEGEND. This may well be the greatest song of all time if I dare say so. Glen did it all. Awesome session musician, one of the greatest guitarists ever. Everyone acknowledges that. Plus he was a great guy.
Glen, thank you posthumously for your music. Your contributions will live on forever!
OH MAN What a great performer and musician!!!! RIP Glen x
I agree, he was absolutely awesome :)
In the early 1970's there was a small record shop near my school. I
picked up Jimmy Webb's "Letters" from the bargain bin for $1.99. I was
blown away - who knew "Galveston" was such a beautiful song!
Whenever I hear Glen Campbell, I hear the remarkable Jimmy Webb!
Glen and Tanya Tucker were so in love, but probably neither of them would have lived as long as he did if they had stayed together. Drugs, alcohol, fighting, etc. Tanya loved Glen and did until the day he died. She never got over him. RIP Glen and TY for your wonderful music.
Such a soul stirring song. Thank you Jimmy Webb & Glen Campbell. Simple life in such glorified tune. I am glad to be old to know this music. Thanks above
Breaks my heart! RIP Glen and may you find comfort in the arms of the angels. Tell my folks I miss them ♡
So clear, so straight, so dignified simple! Best version! No strings and guitar instead of flute, no look into the camera. Only this great great tune with THE VOICE and the depth of the american spirit.
Another good man gone with the wind. Thanks for the memories Glen. See you in Heaven.
Pure class..... song catches u so emotionally !!!! Amazing
He is with Greatest Country singers still singing,, RIP Glen Campbell.
Glen was truly gifted! He didn't read music, instead he play by ear. Magically taltented!
According to Alice Cooper Glen Campbell was one of the five greatest guitar players of all time. That's a significant endorsement.
SATAMAN Schmidt Glen Campbell was part of the Wrecking Crew .. a group of studio musicians that played on many of the hits of the ‘60s.
There is a great documentary on Netflix about them .. check it out
Unknown to most, Campbell was also a studio musician before making a name for himself on his own. His guitar skills, though not "flashy" are SOLID. He was a pro. Lastly? I miss beautiful songs like this. You don't (or RARELY) hear them anymore. What a beautiful tune... Wonderful. (frankly it brings tears to my eyes)
He truly is, but that is odd from a guy who doesn't know how to play a guitar.
I don't know how to throw together a baked lasagna, although I know what tastes good!
Yes so much Eddie Van Halen asked Alice to get him a lesson from Glen
As a child of the ‘80’s my favorite version of this great song, by one of the greatest!
You Tube keeping the legends alive for us!!
Brings me back to 1975
when I was young sand in love - God bless you!!
Always leaves you wanting more. Such a great talent...Thank you and Rest In Peace.
I'm a fan of every other '"music" style but this. This is REAL music...
RIP sir.
So many Memories of the best Music to my ears.
The Wichita lineman has exited the stage. R.I.P Glen, you were truly one of the best.
The Wichita lineman sadly is no longer, still on the line... and we all feel it. And we'll love you for all time... .
RIP :( Will be missed but remembered for eternity through his beautiful music x
Thanks for this. Still my favorite as it has tremendous power to evoke memories of earlier days in my life when I first heard this song as a child. Thanks, Glen, RIP
I want to thank all the linemen from many states who came to central and southwest Louisiana and worked their butts off to get our electricity back up and running. One news report said there were over 800 linemen who were here. I also want to thank all the electric companies for sending your guys down here. Also their families for supporting them as you sons, husbands, brothers left home not knowing how long they would be away. You all are our family now, and we are proud of you!
Last night I fell asleep and I dreamt singing Galveston. I woke and realise the passing away of Glen Campbell. I always liked Glens music and used to sing rhinestone cowboy at karaokes. Such a great guitar player and singer.
Thank you for that bridge....not on the recorded version. RIP
yes
Just Steve Gorgeous bridge. I feel like a part of my past just died.
Me too!
Yes, thank you! Awesome tribute song!
Still sitting here stunned after witnessing "that bridge" you mentioned. That's one of the most soulful, skillful, short and sweet guitar passages I have ever experienced. As a connoisseur of great guitar work, I feel both embarrassed and sad that I have overlooked Glen. I had no idea.
RIP Glen you will be missed so glad I got to see you on your final tour Huntington Wv
