Laphroaig Lore REVIEW: Is this PREMIUM NAS WORTH IT?

  • I've got a single malt from Laphroaig here today called the Lore. This one has spent time in quarter casks and sherry barrels, and is sold with quite a premium price tag. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

    My bottle of the Lore just arrived this week. This whisky is phenomenal. It's incredibly balanced. I love how it has hints both of young and old whisky... I could drink this for days. I wish this was cheaper (I did get an insane deal though).

    The Lore is quite a wonderful expression for their core range. The best Laphroaig remains the Laphroaig 10 cask strength followed closely by the 2019 and 2020 Cairdeas. I would recommend doing a head to head with the Lore and the Cairdeas bottlings. The best value for money Laphroaig in the core range got to be the quarter cask, which is a beautiful marriage of the peaty spirit and oaky tannin complexities. I agree that for the price range it falls short of the Ardbeg Euigeadal and the Corryvreckan. But, it still is a wonderful NAS expression, worth trying for anyone. Also, yes, they do add some E150 to their bottlings.

      I haven't tried the Caideas, but I hear good things. It's quite hard to find in my parts, as is the CS. Not a big fan of the Quarter Cask, but I still come back to it from time to time, it's definitely well priced. Thanks for Commenting! 🥃

    Agree with you, Laphroaig not my favourite distillery on Islay, but I do keep a bottle of the Laphroaig Quarter Cask in my bar cabinet most of the time.
    So great review recommendations in no specific order:
    1). Laphroaig Quarter Cask
    2). Springbank 12 Cask Strength
    3). Port Charlotte 10
    4). Ardbeg Uigendail
    5). Talisker 10

      Some really solid picks there, Clinton. Of those you're most likely to see a PC10 coming down the pipeline, and I've been considering picking up a newer batch of Uigeadail, too. Cheers! 🥃

    I had the opportunity to sit down and compare Springbank 10, Port Charlotte 10 and Lore side by side at a special Whisky bar. They actually served me Lore by mistake. I much preferred the Lore over the other two, much more complex and interesting dram.

    Lore was aged in 5 different types of casks. Variety matters. It’s what gives it the depth and richness that the 18 didnt have. I’d much rather have Lore than the old 18.

    Thanks for the honest review , I'm glad you like this I'm an Ardbeg fan but I keep buying Laphroaigs. I think it's that the Ardbeg10 is still the greatest whisky on paper in all catagories (as long as you like peat) and the Laph10 misses on every mark. Presentation and value.
    I just bought a bottle of Lore for $5 more than an average corryvreken price. And I'm drinking the 10year sherry and all the Cairdeas and 10 CS's. So in that $100 price range we can have more distinct Laphroaig bottles than Ardbeg.
    I believe I'm fascinated by the subtle differences much more than picking a favorite. I think that goes with all whisky (ey) as I peruse my collection. Disappointing bottles are easier to pick out and put in the back row. The evolution of a bottle even improves many of the duds that I gave up on like Balvenie 12 double wood. I have so many open bottles of Laphroaig that none are low enough to over oxidize, but we'll see.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lore was one of the lucky few Laphroaigs that didn't really suffer from oxidation. It's a nice whisky, where I live it comes in pretty expensive comparatively, but it's been an interesting bottle to get to know. I wish we could find Cairdeas for a fair price here in Taiwan. It's quite rare and the few shops that carry it overcharge. Thanks for commenting Jack! 🥃

    I haven’t had this yet. I could probably dig one up locally if I tried. The 18 was sublime. The 15 was one of my favorite laphroaig expressions. Short lived that one. Understandably. Recent prices of laphroaig have become laughable here in Massachusetts. I won’t buy any of them for that quality/price reason sans the cairdeas range(10 yr for $70 USA). I hope they get their act together and present some reasonably priced whisky soon. In the meantime they’re being easily substituted by kilchoman , ardbeg and others. Great review. Thanks

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny, their range is reasonably well priced in Taiwan. I tried the 18 ages ago, but I'm not sure I remember much about it. I've heard nothing but flattering things about the 15. I know they have a 16 out nowadays. Have you tried that one? Still not available here...

    This sounds so great, but I would love to try this dram equivalent without the sherry influence, due to many of the other notes you've shared in this one. All the earthy type notes I'm hearing this has from your review and others, makes me want to find this w/o the sherry influence. Please can you recommend any one dram that I may like? I'm trying to get away from the sweetness in scotch as much as possible, and the quarter/triple cask Laphroaigs seem sweeter than this one. Great review and thanks again and again for these!

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you tried Ardbeg Corryvrecken? High abv, no sherry to speak of, and a pretty rugged punchy hit of peat. I doubt you'll find that one too sweet. 🥃

      @@Gwhisky I think it was one of the Ardbegs that I tried a few years ago, but was so new to the scotch tasting world that I thought my drink was spiked with that smoke favoring😄. Going to put that on a tasting list I recently started and give it a fairer chance, as I have gained at least a bit more experience since then. Much thanks for the suggestion and look forward to more of your scotch reviews! Cheers!🥃

    At 2:35 it sounds like you said “48%” whereas you have “46%” in the graphic in the upper left hand corner. I listened to it several times but I could be wrong. Perhaps you’re just indicating a positive attribute that it’s above 46% but it’s not clear. I’d change the graphic in future videos. I highly recommend the Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength bottlings and the Laphroaig Cairdeas Triple Wood, absolutely spectacular!

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The graphic is actually standardized, used as a benchmark for natural presentation. It says “abv (46% or higher)” to indicate that a whisky is at least 46%, so it would get a check as long as it meets that minimum.
      I'd love to get my hands on a bottle of CS10, but it's horribly overpriced where I live, as is the Cairdeas Triple Wood, unfortunately.
      Btw thanks for watching! Been a fan of yours for some time now. Really dig your enthusiasm, and the reviews are always entertaining and in-depth! 🙂

    It’s indeed colored with e150a. In 🇩🇪 , 🇩🇰 ,🇷🇺, 🇺🇦 they have to provide every single ingredient of the whisky. I personally appreciate these requirements. I prefer Ardbeg Uigeadail to Lore any day. Or even classic Laphroaig 10. This Lore is a joke imho. Tnx for yet another awesome review.
