      The best thing about this ship is that they just used two REVELL kits for this ship and slammed them together.
      I remember when i build Star Trek Ships as a kid they were all from AMT/ERTL, then a set of 3 Ships from REVELL was released, the Voyager, Maquis Raider and a Kazon Ship.
      So if you want to rebuild this thing in perfect scale, just get 2 Revell kits from somewhere and slap 'em together, DONE!

      First star trek ship I could like or want that doesn't look like it has a structural weakness that could be exploited.
      Who thinks Starfleet should really have two branches. Civilian and military then I could see the federation realisticly survive against other powers because KRALL was right peace makes the federation weak and millions pay for it every war.

    Just a fun tidbit: this kind of Frankenstein creation has happened in real life. In WW1, when the Royal Navy needed every ship it could get to defend maritime supply routes against U-boats, the Royal Navy found a weird situation. One destroyer, HMS Nubian, suffered extreme damage in the bow from a torpedo. Another destroyer of a different class, HMS Zulu, had its entire stern ripped off by a mine. The back end of HMS Nubian and the front part of HMS Zulu were, however, perfectly fine. So, in a bizarre stroke of genius, the Royal Navy spliced the halves of both destroyers together to create an entirely new destroyer, a real life kitbash, as it were. And of course, because some admiral had a sense of humour, that new destroyer was promptly named HMS Zubian and commissioned into service.
    And the best part? HMS Zubian performed well. The destroyer successfully rammed and sunk a German U-boat towards the end of the war. The USS Yeagar is a freak, but it’s in good company,

    • @DavidBarkland
      @DavidBarkland 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Yeah, "same class" typically means "the hull and decks have more or less the same dimensions" rather than "similar design".
      I mean, some ships of the "same" class even have different depth, length, and number of decks, not to mention superstructure.

    • @walleclyde8759
      @walleclyde8759 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Also, the USS Abner Reed had something like that. It hit a mine, and it's entire back got blown off, some how was still floating, got towed back to drydock, and the builders decided that it was a good idea to weld a back on it. The stern was just recently found.

      i have to agree. and i will say that it shows that someone was A- paying attention to what was going on during the fighting during the war. and B- what their allies (the klingons) were doing.
      the fact that it looks like a federation bird of prey is outstanding in its conception. someone was watching and thinking, we need fast ro buold cheep ships that can hit something and be felt. the klingons replace their birds of prey quicker than we replace our ships and they can hurt someone when they shoot. so if we take this part of this ship, and that part of that ship, and we put them together like this.... we get a fast to build functional ship that isn't going to destroy our economy. and we can strip them of weapons and sell them on the civilian market if we don't want to keep them.
      which would make them a good ship to play with perhaps in the picard series maybe? just to see how they perform?

    • @90lancaster
      @90lancaster 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That there is another USS Yeager (NCC 65674) that isn't 'Yeager Type' or even a Intrepid Class variant makes it suspect that this ship is 'Yeager Class' (i.e. the 1st of it's kind) even if it is it's a bit peculiar to use a class naming ship less than a 2 years later following a Saber Class vessel (NCC 61947). This is why it's usually called Yeager Type as there isn't any official data on if it's Yeager Class, Yeager Type or just a Light Cruiser Intrepid variant. Especially as the Saber is "Supposed" to be a similar age as the Intrepid Class. So It's pushing it to Have the Yeager Type USS Yeager operating in 2375 at Deep Space Nine when the other Saber Class Yeager was operating near Earth in 2373 at the battle of Sector Zero Zero One.
      That suggests perhaps that the Saber-Yeager was so influential that they named a class after it (one can choose the believe that) but I think it's more likely they just forgot they'd used the name Yeager already when making the show.
      So I'd like CBS to say somewhere that either one Yeager is named in honor of the other - or than the Intrepid like Yeager isn't the class namer and / or there isn't even a class name for it other than Intrepid (variant).
      But considering there are classes that are basically the same ship with different nacelle mounts - this ship changes a lot more than that. Also the other vessel that is derived from the Intrepid has the back end more or less normal and a new Primary Hull. almost like a completed Intrepid class was cut in half and welded to some left over parts to make 2 ships..

    During WW2, EVERYONE was Frankensteining warships, and other vehicles. The US made Aircraft carriers called "escort carriers" were built by taking a commercial freight ship hull, and slapping a deck on top, with a few elevators. Germany converted fishing trawlers into coastal defense ships, removing all of the fishing equipment and fitting a cannon on the front, an anti-aircraft gun on the back, and loading up the deck with depth charges to draw submarines up to the surface. A lot of countries converted construction and farm equipment into makeshift "tanks", which were more like slowly moveable armored bunkers. Speaking of bunkers-some countries would take the turret of a tank, and slap it on top of a concrete tube connected to a bunker and tunnel network, making them into anti-tank pillboxes.
    So it makes sense that humans, in time of war, continue to make cheap, reliable, easily produced auxiliary ships they can fill up with guns, and throw out in numbers, on pre-existing designs. It would make sense to strap a saucer section onto a different "drive" section of another ship class

    • @adamkay8507
      @adamkay8507 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Completely agree, I think the Galaxy and Nebula used the same saucers (say, if they had to separate the ship in an emergency), then they would just warp in another drive section. Even better, they could have different shipyards focusing on specific components.

      Sorry, but that comparision is stupid. The real comparisions would be, if someone scaled up a fletcher destroyer rear half by the factor 3, and then put a baltimore class cruisers front to it.
      Scaling up in this detail makes no sense, Fed ships never combined that way, and the Maki raider design wasnt great in the first place. Its not even recycled, because it mustve been a complete rebuilt considering Raiders are acutally smaller. It make no sense. Its a lazy, ugly kitbash that even it makers probably wish would never get any attention; it was supposed to be background noise.

    If they put it in STO, I will literally create, film, and voice an entire machinima series based around the crew of the U.S.S. Yeager where all of the exterior shots are with the ship in the foreground and DS9 is relegated to the background. The entire series will take place as after action reports by the crew to the captain and explain why they are docked at, or hanging around, DS9 ALL THE FREAKING TIME.
    Script snippet off the top of my head.
    [EXTERIOR: U.S.S. YEAGER IN FORE, DS9 IN REAR]
    Voiceover

    Lt. Jorgensen: Captain, our docking and maintenance request has been denied, we've been asked to assume a holding pattern around Deep Space Nine.
    Capt. Redd: What? WHY?
    [CUT TO INTERIOR, BRIDGE, USING OLD STYLE VOYAGER BRIDGE IN THE DIMMEST COLOR SCHEME AVAILABLE IN STO, CAPT. REDD HEMD SITTING IN CAPTAINS CHAIR, LT. JORGENSEN AT CONSOLE BEHIND]
    Lt. Jorgensen: Well sir, Chief O'Brien's saying that there's some kind of problem with one of the upper docking pylons, and there's a bunch of Klingons taking up the lower docking pylo--
    Capt. Redd: Yeah, okay. Fine. Klingons. Problems. The usual. Well, I guess just... I don't know... Fly around or something until there's a spot for us to dock. Wait... Why are we here, again?
    Lt. Jorgensen: .... because of the huge hole in the hull with only the damage control forcefields - which are failing, I might add - are the only thing keeping about a quarter of the crew from behind sucked out to the blackness of space?
    Capt. Redd: Can't Pymple like... Increase the forward power... Density... Thing and you know... Fix it?
    Lt. Jorgensen [irritated]: Sir, Lt. Cmdr PYM isn't exactly a whole compliment of worker bees and industrial replicators. He can't just... "Engineer it away", as you're so fond of demanding he do.
    Capt. Redd: Awww c'mon! Ol Pymple can do anything. Give the kid a tricorder and a hyperspanner and he can fix anything!
    Lt. Jorgensen: With all due respect, sir, this is a massive hole. In the hull. Put there by Romulan plasma weapons. After... Well, sir, after YOU said they were just bluffing and that whole "neutral zone thing" is more a suggestion than a rule. If their singularity drive hadn't suddenly destabilized, sucking their entire ship into a miniature black hole, we'd be at risk of all out war with the Romulan Star Empire!!! ....sir.
    Capt. Redd: Yeah... But... No harm, no foul, right? As long as everyone sticks to the story that Ensign Doofy
    Lt. Jorgensen: DUFFY! ...Sir.
    Capt. Redd: Right, Duffy... If everyone sticks to the story that Ensign Duffy got us a little too close to that asteroid during a routine training exercise, no one will ever know.
    Lt. Jorgensen: [sarcastically, though the captain seems oblivious]: Right... As long as we stick to the story that an Ensign at the helm crashed us into an asteroid and then was somehow sucked into space through a hole FIVE DECKS AWAY on the OTHER end of the ship, no one will ever know we violated the sovereign space of the Romulan Star Empire.

    Star Trek: Yeager would actually be a great idea for a TV or book series. Paramount could reuse the sets from voyager. Disreputable crew gets the ship no one wants. Stuff is constantly breaking down because it's all kludged together. They fly around the quadrant dealing with all the dirty jobs no one else wants. Multi episode arcs dealing with piracy along the fringes of Federation space (Breen privateers are allying with Orion raiders!). Could be tons of fun.

      A frontline ship like Galaxy Enterprise D with a thousand crew dares technological difference with new alien races that could actively rendering 1000 lives gone in seconds. During borg conflict, federation literally throw away lives in millions with big sized ships.

    In some obscure novel in trek expanded universe it’s stated that the federation, after establishing contact with the Pakled, outsourced those little “maquis raider” ships to them. They got the specs wrong and built them HUGE. When delivered the Federation had no idea what to do with them until the Dominion war and fused the built intrepid parts to them as they were readily available....viola! Yeager....

    Well I have to admit, the idea the Federation bolted whatever they had lying around together to get new ships into action as quickly as possible makes sense. It also explains why so many older ships were on screen during the battle sequences. Bring all those mothballed ships back up to operating standard.
    And that reminds me of a potential topic for a future video. How long could a star ship realistically remain in service? Naval ships and fighter jets generally get retired after 30 or 40 years because of the conditions they have to operate in and subsequent rising maintenance costs, but couldn't a ship in the vacuum of space serve a lot longer?

    I have a habit of falling in love with kitbashed ships, I loved the Centaur-class long before Axanar gave us the Ares-class. The configuration of the nacelle's being placed under the superstructure did a great job of broadcasting the ship's role as a robust and scrappy warship. The Yeager looked like the kind of Star Trek ship you'd see in fan made episodes, probably crewed by gritty rogues like Firefly or the crew of the Millennium Falcon. It's got that civilian aftermarket modification-look that lacks the sleek and functional design of the Federation, I love it. Maybe it would be more at home with the Maquis but I think this ship would have done better as a one-of-a-kind vessel under the command of some plucky privateer. As kitbashed designs go this is one of the more imaginative ones, I can easily see it as some half built or half destroyed Federation ship that some private citizen rescued from a Federation scrap yard and then refitted it piece by piece with Treknology from all over the quadrant: maybe a Farengi holodeck, a medbay full of Vulcan medical technology, maybe a Klingon cloaking device illegally purchased from shady merchants, maybe shields and weapons clandestinely acquired through trade with the Cardassian Obsidian Order, maybe a major MacGuffin to make the ship super important and unique in the Trek Universe like a (mostly) functioning transwarp drive reverse engineered from salvaged Borg tech. Let your imagination run wild, the Yeager design can easily sell these scenarios and God knows how many more. Good analysis, loved this upload, and thanks for spotlighting kitbashed vessels. They're a passion.

  • @princecharon

    My go-to theory for that design is that they were working on a new civilian design based on the existing (much smaller) Juday/Condor-class, at the same shipyard that had one or more unused Intrepid shovel-sections (possibly from very damaged ships, rather than new builds). The Dominion War starts, they experience serious ship losses, and the Yeager is added to the emergency Frankenstein Fleet.

    • @davebauman4991
      @davebauman4991 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wasn't the Intrepids' engineering section a novel design of variable geometry and thus really difficult to replicate without the newest cutting edge tools, molds, shipyards & especially parts? I can see how the 'off the shelf' parts requisite would steer the design towards something that was essentially 100% tried and true by backwoods frontier partisans no less. So, fan productions out there, can u do a miniseries where cliques of cadets at Starfleet engineering school compete to win this design contest? Perhaps a prequel? Or how this gem was buried in 5th place only to be resurrected by dire necessity along with it's Maquis engineers rescued from penal colony? That would mean the Condor began it's concept life as a starship and later was shrunken by it's designers when they joined the Maquis. Maybe this was what Nog was referring to when he said that his old man (Rom) could've been a great engineer?

    The aft section looks more heavily armoured as if the warp core would be better protected and more modular. The nacelle pylons also have the appearance of being almost bolt on to me this makes it a ship that can take more damage before being destroyed and also have parts just swapped out meaning less time in space dock as you could swap out a damaged section instead of trying to repair it. This suits the mindset of a wartime federation suffering mass losses where they have to abandon the usual form over function mindset and make something they can get back onto the battlefield quickly

    I like the design a lot. Like you pointed out I like the wide stern look. To hell with the federation. They are arrogant 's. It's long past time to get away from the pre-Borg mindset. It only took the greatest loss of ships in federation history for them to begrudgingly (kicking and screaming) to design and build one dedicated warship. The Origional series Fed ships were equal combat and exploration. By the time of TNG they were exploration ships mixed with cruise liners. This looks like a war ship. The Yeager class of ships remind me of the Klingon ship because of the warp cell location and construction. The Klingon ships were war ships first and everything else third.

    I think that I would've been more accepting of it if they themselves had been more accepting of it. It's, strictly speaking, something the showrunners wanted to sweep under the rug as much as possible because they also thought it looked a tad silly.
    I think, if it was featured more prominently and had an in-series explanation of it's design, there's be less disdain for it. Not a whole lot less, but a bit.
    I think it could've even had it's own episode. Going off of what you said, maybe a few ships are heading to the front lines straight out of dry dock and one of them breaks down near the border. The Defiant has to go in and quietly try to repair it before they get spotted by the enemy. Then at the end, the enemy does show up and the Defiant tries to convince this newly promoted captain who's just been given his first command to evacuate, but he refuses and puts the shields up so the engineering teams can't return to the defiant and instead have to keep working. In the nick of time, they do get the ship operational and it throttles the dominion forces because it was built to be a combat ship in the first place.

This design looks sturdier, yet just as effective, if not more. The only problem with it is that it looks way too much like a starfighter, thus creating an uncanny valley effect, for a spaceship. Always thought that could works as a Federation-Klingon hybrid, if they had taken inspiration form a Negh'var.

    I think it was a missed opportunity to show just how much the Dominion was impacting the federation. Not just pulling surplus ships out of mothballs and recalling ill equipped ships from long term missions to fight the Dominion... But literally raiding the spare parts bin to cobble together wartime emergency ships.
    And aside from that, I agree, the forward swept 'wings' skirting either side of the elongated saucer hull makes it look oddly capible as a sub-light skirmisher.
    maybe those huge vents at the back give it some really good impulse maneuverability?

It's the Liberty Ship(only for actual combat/scouting(?))of the Dominion war. A reliable propulsion system with excellent sensors and maybe with a pair Kludged together pulse phasers, nice work. I don't know why people dislike the T-34 tank type ships of space going species. They're cheep, easy to produce, easy to manage, and easy to repair. They are the perfect ships for long drawn out engagements where firepower and survivability are a necessity. Sure they're not good for long distance or long term deployments on their own, but in a full scale defensive and offensive setting these kind of ships are worth more than the best heavy cruiser. Heck, in halo the Paris, Charon, and Stalwart class frigates were the mainstay of the UNSC fleet. Sure they were slaughtered in mass, but the heavier ships such as the destroyers, cruisers and carriers did no better. The only plus for the frigates was that they were easier to replace and produce. They were the T-34s of Human/Covenant war. And when other fictional universes develop their own version it is extremely enjoyable. Because you know things are serious when you see your favorite characters at the helm of a ship operating in zerg rush tactics. It adds another level of drama and risk to the universe. You feel for the people crewing them. You feel their frustration at the situation. You feel their fear as they see weapons that can gut their ship just as easily as one of the more expensive ships. And you feel their hope when they manage to take out an enemy ship that costs more to produce then their own.

    One thing I never understood about Star Trek ship design is putting the engines and sometimes the main saucer on the big stalks....It creates GIANT structural weak points that allow a well placed shot to just cut the engines clean off the body of the vessel as well as leave the engines completely exposed. They show something similar in the last Star Trek movie when the mining swarm just cuts off the engines and bridge disk in seconds. The Enterprise itself is the best example of this MASSIVE design flaw.....

    • @platiuscyndar9017
      @platiuscyndar9017 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is done for a variety of reasons, but generally doesnt matter in a combat scenario due to structural integrity fields, basically the impact gets stretched over the entire hull.
      Once these field are offline, nothing stops anybody from just shooting the warpcore so these weakpoints tend to not really matter.

    My ONE and ONLY issue with the Yeager class is the name. A Yeager class implies a fast ship more specifically a ship that breaks some sort of speed record. It's namesake did after all break the air sound barrier. From an esthetic and functional perspective, I LOVE THIS SHIP! I just think Liberty class would be a more apropro name as the urgent necessity resulting in its rushed production brings to mind the liberty ships of WWII. They were rushed into service in order to replenish a fleet that had suffered heavy losses. What could the purpose of the Yeager class be if not exactly that? This ship would be a great way of introducing military history buffs to the Star Trek franchise. Barring that it should have been the JAGER class not the "Yeager" class.

    OK, you've sold me on this. More ideas (I'm not sure how much the aft section got scaled up by, so I'll just call that number n here):
    - The aft portion is adapted by having hastily-installed catwalks etc. added to the giant-sized rooms.
    - The inertial dampeners are completely and intractably out of whack, to the point of somehow working exactly opposite to how normal Star Trek inertial dampeners are supposed to work - instead of compensating for engine acceleration and failing when confronted with external forces (hence why Kirk & co. don't seem to notice sublight travel, but get thrown around when they run into a nebula), they brush off any external force short of total structural disintegration but barely account for thrust g-forces. Most crews have decided they prefer it this way, partially because most of them are adrenaline junkies to begin with.
    - The aforementioned external force dampening actually makes the ship significantly more survivable, by keeping damage localized and greatly reducing chain-reaction effects (such as the Explosive Instrumentation common on many vessels). Efforts to expand this unexpected benefit to the rest of the fleet have been stymied by the fact that nobody knows how it happened in the first place, and the Vulcan Science Academy is refusing to send them any more analysts after the last one drank himself into a coma after seeing the saucer-body connection.
    - The massively oversized warp core & engineering systems (it was supposed to be normal-sized, but so were the rooms in the aft section) gives it a frankly irresponsible amount of power for its size.
    - Between the increased power and durability, several captains have found ramming to be a surprisingly effective tactic.
    - Speaking of battle tactics: the aft weapons are *huge*.
    - Some guys in black suits claiming to be from the "Spatial Integrity Commission" showed up on completion and stole all the replicators from the aft section, citing something about the "giant atom catastrophe." If you find any parts they missed, maybe don't turn them on.
    - (Put them in a box, address it to "Engineer Jackson," and leave it in the mail room overnight. It will be gone in the morning. Don't worry about it.)
    - If not properly calibrated, the oversized warp drive tends to send its ship overshooting the target destination. Aside from the numerous obvious problems, some captains have learned to exploit this by launching themselves behind enemy positions.
    - If you've heard anything about captains using the above glitch to "accidentally" warp to resort planets, requiring several days to re-calibrate the systems before returning, those are filthy, filthy lies.
    - While the Yeager-class does have twice as many computer system anomalies as any two other starship classes, rumors that they are actually rogue AI cobbled out of aft-section replicator parts are of course completely baseless.
    - Don't use the aft-section transporters, either. Giant soldiers sound like a nice idea, but getting them back to normal size has proven an inexact science to say the least.
    - They work great for super-sized photon torpedoes, though.
    - The climate-control systems are as out of whack as everything else, leading to randomly scattered (and occasionally mobile) regions of abnormally high or low temperatures. A common effect of this has been high temperatures in the bridge region, forcing many crews to operate out of standard uniform.
    - (Get in contact with one of the longer-serving units, ask for "Engineer McKay," and tell him you need help with a "Casual Friday Anomaly." Thank me later.)
