@@joeking6763 I seem to recall that the "magic Man" was their guitar player. Ann loved him, but he not her, and he eventually left the band...too bad, because he was really good
@@raymo6795, actually, the "Magic Man" refers to the guitar player's, "older brother", who at the time had been in a relationship with Ann. The guitar player, himself, was hooked up with Nancy, but later left the band because, Nancy, wasn't really as interested in the relationship, unlike her love-interest for the drummer, whom, Nancy was two-timing with.

I with you Lex. Heart is an awesome female rock band and definitely the best because Ann Wilson is the greatest female rock singer of all time and her sister Nancy is a really great back up singer and guitarist. They are one of the greats and she’s definitely my favorite female rocker.
While she may have a delicate tone, don’t be fooled. Her voice fills up a room. She has a huge voice and range. We saw them a few years back and she still had a huge voice.
The "Magic Man" is Mike Fisher. He was an American who had gone to Canada to avoid being drafted into Vietnam War. He came across the border & went to Ann's concert when she was with Hocus Pocus where they immediately fell in love. After Nancy joined the band in '74 they wrote "Magic Man" & released it in '75. It became their first number one hit! Ann shared: "It’s absolutely my leaving home song. My mother wasn’t all too sure that the best thing for me was to-even though I was already 21, she wasn’t sure that I should be jumping into this full-time sexual cohabitational relationship with somebody in a whole other country. She was calling me, going, ‘What are you up to? C’mon, I don’t know if you should be going this. Come on back! Be careful, give it some thought!’ And I was just like, ‘Nope, nope, I’m gone! I’m in!’ It was love at first sight that lasted for about eight years! But “Magic Man” was definitely written about the spell that I was under and my conversations with my mother about it at the time." "Straight On" next.....
JEN!...I can always count on you to fill in the blanks. I recalled parts of this , but not all...thanks for the info...I could go for some "Straight On"or " Heatless" or "Even it Up"...doesn't matter, its all good
Their Father was a Language Arts Teacher in my Junior High when their first Album came out. Everytime there was a study break in his class, he'd play their Album.
Ann Wilson and her sister Nancy left their native Seattle to follow two brothers that had gone to Canada as members of a band. The song was written for the man that Ann had fallen for. He was her magic man. I saw that band play at a local bar here in western Canada with some friends and we knew then that the Wilson sisters were destined for much greater things. About a year and a half or so later the album Dreamboat Annie came out and raced up the charts.
Michael Fisher was Ann's boyfriend and she wrote this about him. He was the band's manager and is the brother of lead guitarist Roger Fisher who was Nancy's boyfriend.. ROG ROCKS!!
He was running from the Draft (Vietnam War) I recall, I remember them days too. Start of a new decade with so much promise. Ah well, I digress but they were great to have seen a bunch up close. Cheers.
I use to work with Michael&Roger Fishers sister in Seattle in 1978. She took me to a invite only concert at the Trojan Horse and lo and behold out comes the band and it was Heart. Played for 2 hours then drank and talk to everyone. I never asked for autographs just had a friggin blast.
Ann and Nancy are an incredibly talented pair of sisters!! Heart has a LIBRARY FULL OF AWESOME MUSIC!! A very rewarding and enjoyable rabbit hole to go down to explore more of their music.
"Mistral Wind" is probably their most epic song. You'd love it. Lots of other hits to choose from too. And live performances never disappoint. Ann Wilson always nails it. "Barracuda" and "Crazy on You" are two other big hits you would love.
Hi guys. enjoy watching your reactions. Magic Man It was written by Nancy and Ann Wilson. The song is about Ann’s relationship with the band’s original guitarist Mike Fisher. During the Vietnam War she followed him to Canada where he wouldn’t get drafted.
Yeah, the only good thing that dirty, draft dodging commie lover was be the manager, and one the guitarist for them. Other than that, pure trash and useless. 3 of my uncles served, volunteered before they were drafted, all 3 came home, my dad would’ve but he was too young, it was ‘officially’ over, no more draft or volunteers by the time he was 17, by just over a year. One of my grandpas was in WWII, korea, and early Vietnam. The other couldn’t, he tried joining in WWII, he had some minor medical issues, but severe enough they wouldn’t take him. He ended up in aviation during WWII, helping to develop and build the aircraft we needed, until aerospace and one of the project leads/QC for manufacturing of one of the companies that made parts for the Apollo missions, his company he ended up at even helped make some of the subsystem for the tomahawk cruise missiles, was his last project before he fully retired, for the second time. The others were army/navy…USMC here, so yeah I give them shit all the time.
"Magic Man" is the one who first made love to the girl in the song. He's the one she fell in crazy, passionate love with because he wooed her and spoke lovely, firey things to her; they got high, they talked about all manner of mysterious things and they made love. That is enough of a reason for this, most probably, teenage girl to call him the Magic Man. "A woman from a child", is how Ann Wilson described it, in the song. He gave her that awakening, if you will.
Lex, your expression is priceless. It's the same look on everyone's face when they hear Ann Wilson for the first time. Her vocals are legendary and unparalleled.
This is a song about a young woman being seduced by a guy who's got all the smooth moves. (Edit: see Jennifer Hurlburt's excellent comment for back story). Lex, your reaction was priceless! In my not-so-humble opinion, Ann Wilson is one of the greatest rock and roll vocalists of all time, regardless of gender. Your honest reaction to her greatness was fabulous!
It is about Mike Fisher, band manager and brother of guitarist Roger Fisher. Ann fell in love with him back then and followed him to Canada when he left the US to dodge the draft for Vietnam.
This is why Heart is in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with eternal amazing singing voice of Anne Wilson and amazing guitar riffs from her sister Nancy Wilson
My heart broke for Ann Wilson when she felt embarrassed by her weight gain to the point she wouldn’t go on stage. I can’t remember what it was exactly, I want to say it was a thyroid problem of sorts. There were so many great female vocalists in my lifetime, but she was on another level!
You guys have to listen to the entire Dreamboat Annie album. This is what made me fall in love with Heart way back in 1978 as a 13 year old boy. I still listen to that album all the time.
First heard the album in the fall of 1975. They weren't big yet, but it was coming. The next year, they played s small gig on campus sponsored by KWSU. Unfortunately, I missed it. But my friends from the Seattle area knew of them, the Wilson sisters were from Mercer Island. In fact, their dad was a teacher at the high school there and a couple friends were in his class.

Lex, Usually when you go into the studio, you give the vocals all you got. But when you go out on tour you need to find a way to be able to sing the song every night. Back when Heart was putting these songs out it was record, tour record, tour. Bands from the 70's would do shows 7 nights a week, sometimes for weeks on end. And Brad, the Magic Man is that guy that Ann's mother didn't want her to go out with. But you know young girls, the heart wants what the heart wants. They all love the Bad Boys. 😎☮️
I saw heart for the first time in 1977 in Atlanta, what a CONCERT!! $10 for the concert, and I got to hear Mothers finest, Heart, Doobie Brothers, Kansas, Foreigner and Bob Seger. Thank you for reacting to the classics. ..
These sisters are awesome. Check out them singing Stairway To Heaven at the Kennedy Honors for Led Zeppelin. I wore out their Dog And Butterfly album. They have a lot of great music.
Had never heard this live version, quality artists of that caliber will probably never be seen again, if you compare with the studio version there are some diferences but the actual singing and instrument/music playing is incredible :)
Great song. However, the studio version of this one would have been better. When searching for old songs like this, I always include "Hi Fi" or "Remastered" in the search text to get a quality sounding version.
Studio version is better, the musical instruments are more clear and precise , you can notice when a music instrument ends and the other begins, notice at one part of a song it was muzzled did not stand out compared to the studio version
Ann and Nancy Wilson, were the first women to front a rock band, EVER. They may claim to be a Seattle band, but they were nothing in Seattle. The guys in the band became draft dodgers and headed north to Vancouver BC Canada. Ann followed them and then a year later, Nancy joined the band. Their first album, produced and recorded at Mushroom Records in Vancouver, was Dreamboat Annie. Vancouver fans made the band popular, so in my mind that’s where they’ll always be from. They played at my high school.
I think Fanny may have been before Heart but had nowhere near the success or longevity - mainly because their lead singer quit doing music, if I recall correctly.
The song is about Mike Fisher, the band's manager, who Ann was involved with. Nancy was with his brother Roger who was the lead guitarist. It all blew apart.
That was a great reaction... Heart were really big in the 70's when they got started, then hit again in the 80's. They've got a very long an illustrious career.
Old school bands use monitors which are the forward to the band speaker. You see rocker using them as lifts a lot in the 80's. She is a virtuoso with her head voice, she has good control well into the range where most have to switch to falsetto. Bon Scott did that in a male voice with early AC/DC. Lex nailed in a video once it's range most adults can't hit without going falsetto or whistle. Mind you I don't me just hitting I mean controlled notes.
You're right, this is a super impressive vocal performance. No in-ear monitors, no modern voice reinforcement systems, no auto-tune. Just a wedge speaker pointed back at the singer for reference. Crazy talent.
Ann Wilson. Same lady who sang “Barracuda.” Heart is a fantastic band! ❤️ Ann and the other woman, are sisters. Her blonde sister is Nancy. They set out to be like a female Led Zeppelin.
Brad, the instrument you were asking about i believe is a Minimoog Synthesizer. But the instrument used in old SiFi movies was a Theremin invented back in 1928 and became the iconic sound for “get ready to be scared” scenes.
That's Roger Fisher shredding that guitar with a little help from Howard Leese doubling on some of the lead guitar. Roger was one of the greatest and one of the least appreciated guitarist during the seventies. In fact, if we're gonna be completely honest, he taught Nancy how to shred on the guitar before he was no longer in the band. Roger was a co-founder of the band before the Wilson sisters were even in the picture. Ann came first. When Nancy was later brought into the band, she was basically just a young folk singer who played acoustic guitar. She learned a lot from Roger in those years he was still in the band. He created a lot of the cool guitar riffs of Heart's early songs. The classic "Barracuda" riff was his. He was the main lead guitar in the band. Howard Lease who payed a lot of Moog Bass was also a top tier guitar player in the band and often doubled on lead guitar with Roger.
Yep "corded" microphones.. no auto tune... JUST the Band and her voice !! When live music was ACTUALLY LIVE !!! Saw them at Summer Sunday 1981 in Empire Stadium Vancouver BC and a few times after that at the Coliseum.
Great song and I love that you guys have a liking for the 70’s! Seems like yesterday in my second year at college playing pool or foosball at the bar and rocking to this song!
I had the pleasure of seeing these gals in Denver, it was a small venue in the performing arts complex downtown. First they did an hour and a half unplugged, no electric, all acoustic. Then there was a brief intermission when they returned they pulled out the amps, and did another hour all electric and tore it up. Amazing 👏 encore encore.
Agree with Lex.. so smooth and subtle voices over very loud music.. absolutely beautiful singing. The ear buds that musicians use now are " monitors" to hear themselves. Before these were invented, the singers and instruments monitors were pa speakers turned around facing them.. they are the small boxes you see on stage facing the musicians.
I saw Ann Wilson 5 months ago.. She sang this and she sounds better now almost 50yrs later. "Magic Man" is Mike Fisher the guitarist.. Ann's boyfriend at the time who became their manager. She ran away with him to Canada to escape the Viet Nam draft. This is a true story of her Mother telling her to come home. "Try to understand ..he's a "MAGIC MAN" Mama!" But it's the story of love gets in the way of thinking clearly. As we've all done. Check out Heart's song "Wild Child" For her "delicate" voice "Dog and Butterfly" or "Dreamboat Annie" Ann plays flute beautiful.
2:20 She could hear herself because even without today's earbuds (with click track and/or mix), they often had small sound monitors on stage in the 1970s. (That's why you often could hear some feedback ringing in concerts.)
First time I saw them was at a sock hop noon hour dance at Burnaby heights Jr. High I was 14 later I would run into them on the Vancouver rock clubs playing sometimes just checking other bands out the stories I could tell lol
I think these 2 would love everything about the The Pretenders - Precious, The Wait, Tattooed Love Boys, etc. Chrissy's voice, style, and talent are equally impressive as Ann's...
If you haven't seen Heart do Stairway To Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors, I HIGHLY recommend it. By the end of the song, Robert Plant is in tears. Perhaps the greatest tribute ever recorded. Ann is on a shelf with only a couple other females in Rock. Linda Ronstadt, Pat Benetar and Ann Wilson. The Holy Trinity.
Written and composed by Ann and Nancy Wilson, the song is sung from the viewpoint of a young girl who is being seduced by an older man (referred to as a Magic Man), much to the chagrin of her mother, who calls and begs the girl to come home. In an interview, Ann Wilson revealed that the "Magic Man" was her then boyfriend, band manager Michael Fisher, and that part of the song was an autobiographical tale of the beginnings of their relationship
I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it…. I was in y hometown Marble MN in my living room… the guitar blew my mind.. stopped me in my tracks..I was stunned actually

Good tip, thanks. I was thinking through the first half of this 'jeez, did they not turn that lady's microphone on or something??' :D
Saw them at a local fair and they are incredible. Ann's voice live will blow your mind. Awesome
I have great respect for the Wilson sisters, but Janis Joplin and Grace Slick fronted rock bands before them.
I think Fanny may have been before Heart but had nowhere near the success or longevity - mainly because their lead singer quit doing music, if I recall correctly.
Funny, I was remembering them playing a school dance at my high school in Vancouver in the early 70's too
Dynamic range and control. She can go from whisper to scream and back before you know what she's doing to you. Ann Wilson is the greatest.
The song is about Mike Fisher, the band's manager, who Ann was involved with. Nancy was with his brother Roger who was the lead guitarist. It all blew apart.
They lasted almost 8 years, well Ann's relationship did, I do not know how long Nancy's did.
Saw then in the 70s....Heart out-rocked the crowd. Ann and Nancy Wilson are a beast!
When you hear someone say, "That is so '70s," it means "that music is great!"
Greetings from Oregon. Phido and I just loves Lex reaction. Saw these cats in Ann Arbor Michigan quite a while ago. They were good
Wow! First time I saw that incredible performance! Very close to the studio recording. Just slightly more gritty. Perfect.
Yes this was the time where sound was going from analog sound emerging into digital sound , they merged for a bit.
Then MTV changed everything.
That was a great reaction... Heart were really big in the 70's when they got started, then hit again in the 80's. They've got a very long an illustrious career.
Every red blooded teenaged boy who was a fan of Heart fell in love with Ann Wilson. I know I did back in the 70's and still am! Thanks again.
Phenomenal group and deserves to be in the the Rock and Roll of Fame!!
ALL BOW TO THE QUEENS OF ROCK
They are in the RRHOF I think.
@@martinkulkarni3569 They are.
That look on Lex's face --- pretty much the same look on everyone's face hearing this song for the first time.
Check the studio version out if you really wanna hear her sing
Old school bands use monitors which are the forward to the band speaker. You see rocker using them as lifts a lot in the 80's. She is a virtuoso with her head voice, she has good control well into the range where most have to switch to falsetto. Bon Scott did that in a male voice with early AC/DC. Lex nailed in a video once it's range most adults can't hit without going falsetto or whistle. Mind you I don't me just hitting I mean controlled notes.
Heart has always been an incredible band. Legendary!
Ann Wilson is the finest female rock singer PERIOD! She is the best of the best!
One of my favorites. Heart kills it. She has not lost any of her voice.
Yep "corded" microphones.. no auto tune... JUST the Band and her voice !! When live music was ACTUALLY LIVE !!! Saw them at Summer Sunday 1981 in Empire Stadium Vancouver BC and a few times after that at the Coliseum.
I'm fascinated with the genuine reactions and music appreciation of Lex!!! ❤
The Wilson sisters are incredible..i love those ladies.
Lex has the cutest freckles ever.... I know that's got nothing to do with anything, but I thought I'd point it out anyway :)
They are the greatest female led rock band!
The more I listen to Heart and Ann's singing. I don't really think she had to put a lot of effort into singing. It just comes naturally for her.
Check out Heart's song "Wild Child"
For her "delicate" voice "Dog and Butterfly" or "Dreamboat Annie" Ann plays flute beautiful.
Guitar is ROGER Fisher, Mike's bro. Mike was band's manager.
@@Jessica_Roth It has been said it's about the manager though. Although she did date the guitarist. You're right his name is Roger.
2:20 She could hear herself because even without today's earbuds (with click track and/or mix), they often had small sound monitors on stage in the 1970s. (That's why you often could hear some feedback ringing in concerts.)
I really enjoy your reactions ,they brighten up my day.
I miss you, man. Peace.
Lex your face was PRICELESS lol I loved your your reaction to Ann Wilson's voice!
Lex needs to hear their album Dreamboat Anne. It is beautiful! ❤
I agree with Lex, the best female led rock band and I dare say one of the best rock bands of all time! Y'all doing it right!!
Absolutely! They must see it. 💜💜
She has effortless power! Love Heart! Try a ration to "Tell it like it is" to see her real voice.
He's a magic man...he's got "magic hands." Get it?
Yeah! definitely give ''If looks could kill'' a shot. Her voice splits the soul in that song. She's on top of her game and can deliver those lyrics with such a level of engagement. Unreal !!!!!
Lex definitely needs to listen to "Dog and Butterfly" after this.
House band at Oil Can Harry's Rock room when I worked there lol... Great band, great people!! They played Led Zeppelin alot lol...
Vancouver BC Canada!
Such a great song. So authentically female from multiple angles. A great window into the human experience. Growth, temptation, worry, adventure. Timeless.
Saying Heart is your favorite female led band makes me so happy. The Wilson sisters vocal/guitar combo is one of the greatest in the rock world. Period.
