I'm 26 about to graduate with a BA in philsophy with the goal of eventually becoming an environmental attorney. I like the path that I'm on, but man is it daunting, and a part of me definitley wishes I wouldve known about these careers and opportunities like the California Conservation Corps. I would absolutely love to have a more hands on career in helping the environment.
Any advice on how I may be able to do that? (I've also been considering going back to school after I graduate for a masters in Environmental Sceince and Policy)

Hey, so it sounds like you’re on an awesome path currently and very different from anything that I have personally dealt with. I don’t know how hands on being an environmental attorney would allow you to be. I would definitely say that there’s a lot of considerations that aren’t always obvious when looking into environmental careers such as the type of work, the location, and career paths. A lot of what I talk about on this channel so far is conservationist work which definitely fits the bill for hands on work and management plan writing(also, it’s definitely in line with conservation corps goals) however, that’s in places with public or agricultural land, environmental work looks very different for people wanting to live in cities and generally has more to do with regulation or private consulting. So maybe depending on where you see yourself in 5 years the attorney role may give you the most of what you want. If you want to do a conservation corps or volunteer for a conservancy agency of some sort you can find short term projects that can be done in a summer and give you a taste of the more wild conservationist life for sure and even if you don’t go down that path give you insight into the types of issues that are on the ground in a really concrete way so I’d say that or a normal seasonal job to try it out couldn’t hurt before jumping in the deep end. I have friends that do research currently that largely informed what they were passionate about with these seasonal jobs. It’s scary and if you don’t know how to look for the jobs it can seem like it’s impossible and opportunities are few. I used to live in an area with very few conservation opportunities but moved out to an area where I am surrounded by the opportunities. And some people do that with consulting or other stuff and moving into cities. Sorry if this is extremely all over the place but I hope something here is useful (I can definitely clarify some of my rambling) but I like to think of it as all the environmental jobs are on team environment and even if the way they reach their goals is different they’re all good. A lot of people in the environmental field also move around a ton in the type of work they do so don’t feel to pressured to get it right immediately. (Also don’t think you need an environmental degree to dip your toes in haha)

@@ecologystorymode Hey, thank you so very much for your quick and detailed response! And no, it wasnt all over the place at all. I've honestly just been dealing with a lot of doubt concerning my path as an aspiring environmental attorney. Law school is very expensive, sure, but you also apparently got to be top of the class to really get anywhere, and, above all, it seems like most environmental attorneys can only find work defending the corporate polluters which is gross! Consequently, I've been looking for alternative career paths that would allow me to aid the environment. Finding your channel has been amazing to the effect that its given me more information on prospective careers. I've definitely become interested in doing conservationist work, particularly forestry. There are a couple job listings here in LA for those positions so thats great! All in all, I'll be sure to do more research!

Very helpful video idk if you ever give talks at schools or mentor students but you’d be a great public speaker. I graduated Dec 2020 with Bachelors in Ag with hopes of getting into conservation ie officer but no luck. However I did recently land a job as Environmental Health Specialist in public sector. Hopefully looking into environmental compliance or health & safety management. Anyway I hope many others find your helpful vids looking into environmental/interior field etc!!

I appreciate it and with only about 7 years of professional experience I’ve already moved around a lot and it seems like a lot of others do with jobs in the environmental fields, all of them are awesome IMO and EHS does a lot of cool stuffs. These videos started because of conversations I was having helping younger friends find jobs and I’m glad others find it helpful haha.

Spill reponse!! I have never heard of the term resource advisor is that an american term? or are you using that as a catch all term for any specialist advisors in emergency response?

Sorry, not really active on here anymore haha. In the US government and contract work that deals with emergency response uses a system of incident cards or commonly called the red card to keep track of training and skills you have that can be used on emergencies. Using your agency or by keeping in touch to be on call by a dispatch you can make yourself regionally or nationally available with your agencies approval. Some of the certs like resource advisor allow you to take a more science role when there are emergencies that impact natural resources. The spill response is a less common but popular example of incidents you’re going to join in on with that or other qualifications. The beauty is that any kind of job can have impact and take that works with the resources so it’s not really one job that takes the cake when big incidents activate people. Realistically if you are nationally available and have quals you’ll probably end up on a wildfire though haha. I feel like this is potentially the most confusing video I made I appreciate the comment though haha.
