    Hey guys! I'm the artist that does most of the artwork for Brian Colin's Revilo. I just wanted to pop in and say thank you for the nice words you had about my art. I don't know that I agree about it being the best (or even among the best) art on a 5e book, but my cap feels a little tighter after hearing that! Thank you very much!

    I played an Eladrin Wizard. I loved changing seasons. I was once in the spring when my party came upon a pair of shambling mounds. I spent a round cross-legged on the forest floor convinced I was speaking plant (Wisdom of 7). I determined they just wanted more sunlight and cast Sunbeam. I burned one to a crisp and severely damaged the other. Spent the next three days in the Winter mourning the loss of my plant friends. So many RP memories from that character.

    In my current campaign I switched the racial bonuses of High Elves and Drow, so High Elves made better Sorcerers, Bards, Paladins and Warlocks, while Drow made better Wizards. My rationale was that High Elves were "closer" to the Feywild and thus favored more "innate" magic, while Drow were almost totally divorced from their origins and needed to approach magic as a science.

    For both the Drow and the Eladrin (especially the drow) a swashbuckler rogue is especially good. Multiclassing it with a charisma-based spellcasting class also makes a lot of sense. My personal preference would be a multiclassed Rgoue (swashbuckler)/Warlock (Hexblade).

    so i have an eladrin, who serves as a love interest for a character in a story i was writing and she was super fun to write being able to show her emotions by means of changes in her foliage like hair. if she got sad it started to 'wilt' in color, etc. really fun way to show expression in detail.

    I put together a Drow 3rd lvl Gloomstalker Ranger / 3rd lvl Divine Warlock. 150 ft. Darkvision all the time, and warlock devils sight invocation with drow/warlock darkness spell when needed. Healing ability from divine. I’m effectively invisible whenever I want to be in combat, and can off heal/self heal a bit too. So far it’s been awesome. Thematically, I play it as “I am the hunter of the dark. I am the shadow behind the candle. Bound in service to the light. “

    • @SolarFlairIsBestPony
      @SolarFlairIsBestPony 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it can still be argued that Half Elves have classes they're best at, even if they're good at everything. That +2 to charisma and custom secondary +1s screams charisma caster or charismatic rogue to me. Tack on the extra skills and you've got a very talented Rogue, especially when you grab Reliable Talent.
      Like yeah you could do a good Barbarian or Druid, or Wizard but if you're pushing for their BEST? Nah. If you wanna make good use of all those stats personally I'd say Paladin or Rogue. The more things a paladin can resist the tankier they are, really, and a Rogue that can't be sleep spelled or charmed away from the group is a big plus.

      I recommend half elf with drow heritage, darkness+devil's sight, is a very powerful combination against bosses, solo situations, and or if you're ranged you can use it without blinding your party(as long as you're not in a cave/tight space etc).
      The reasoning behind drow is because of warlocks limited spell slots as the racial is a 1/L rest free cast. Oh and faerie fire is in my opinion one of the best debuffs in the game too.

  • @TherinCreative

    Arcane hierophant... except it's not in 5e. But you could probably hack one together making an Arcane Tradition for wizards that allows druid spells to be added to one's spellbook and a couple other features that fit the flavor you desire to round it out (whether it be Race's of the Wild's animal companion/familiar hybrid, or something more basic like some of the druid wild shape feature, or whatever fits your campaign vision). The druid/mage - for when you want (just about) all the spells.

    I think the best Rogue archetype for the Wood Elf is Scout, they're already purpose-built for it; you can also focus on building your character those "core" Rogue skills since you get proficiency in Nature and Survival added on when you decided to go with the Scout.
    That said, and I'm going off the mentioning of "Ninjas" in the video, the Scout is actually very close to operating mechanically similar to historical Shinobi (a male Shinobi is called a Ninja while the female shinobi is called the Kunoichi). Way of the Shadow Monks operate mechanically closer to the rumors, myths, and legends shinobi spread and allowed to be spread about them so they could better go about missions. In my honest opinion, the Wood Elf and Kenku are the best built for Shinobi type characters, mainly because of the Wood Elf's Mask of the Wild ability and Kenku's Expert Forgery and Mimicry abilities, all of these abilities are of great use to a Shinobi. That said, if you do want to make a "Ninja" character it might be a good idea to get proficiency in Animal Handling, it's actually surprising just how many ways Shinobi make use of animals or do things to take advantage of the animals of others.
    I've been doing a bit Shinobi research, because "ninjas are awesome" and have been using the Which Ninja series by Gaijin Goomba as a foundation for that research, he goes into a lot of depth for the cultural and historical information and contexts of ninjas. First and foremost, he is not shy of repeating himself on throughout the series, mostly because there are certain things that bare repeating. In the series, he doesn't just breakdown the history and culture, which are very important, but he also goes through tactics, mindsets, and gear that Shinobi were known to have. Heck, there's even a list of items, six in total, that every shinobi is to never be without, you find the list online and most of the items there either come in the Criminal/Spy background (you want to lean on the Spy side of that) or rough substitutes in gear for purchase.
    I believe in doing research on archetypes you plan on using in some way, especially if you plan on playing them in a game, so that you can get a proper understanding of how that archetype is supposed to function or ideas on how to implement it without coming off as something everyone else has basically seen poorly executed in popular media. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with copy a character from Naruto or the Ninja Turtles but you need to be aware some things before moving forward, especially in the case of the Naruto franchise and its portrayal of Shinobi and some of the older iterations of the Ninja Turtles (especially the 1980s cartoon series). My point is almost anything can act as a good inspiration for a character but if you just do your best to make them completely one-to-one with their source material you will just be playing around with a potentially massive set of missed opportunities.

    Elves have a lot of desirable aspects for almost any class, depending on your subrace. It's really hard to call a 'best' class for 'em.
    For Drow I'd say... very solid Rogue, really. Strongest in the shadows, high dex and charisma. The extra skills and questionable nature fit really well. I would even say just about any rogue subclass fits them thematically. You could argue against Swashbuckler but all it'd take is a bit of imagination. Alternately, a caster. Their combat disadvantage in sunlight applies to attack rolls, not saves, so, you could definitely do a lot with magic. Obviously they're most disposed to charisma, and thematically probably Warlocks or Sorcerers, having old magic in their blood or making deals with questionable beings they plan to betray or whatever.
    Eladrin to me just kinda screams Ranger or Druid thematically... or bard. Very dramatic, visual, characters. Sorcerer would make sense too, their magic manifesting in their race and then going even further.
    Strong agree with you guys on the High Elf. Arcane Trickster might be a bit weird theme wise, but it does give the trickster a bit more magic and it might make for a decent outcast character- like a high elf that just wasn't as nose turn up-y as they typically are made to be in most things.
    Sea Elf could probably get away with anything, Dex and Con are always good. They just might not be as mega potent as other things. Barbarian is pretty thematic though and will make excellent use of both.
    Shadar-kai seem too good to be a player race to me? Damage resist and a teleport with a powerful boost on it? But anyway, Barbarian seems a weird fit theme wise, but stat wise it lines up well, damage resists and teleporting and con boost. Kinda works with Paladin though also, no necro, pop in to help someone in a dire situation and resist the punishment you have to suffer, con and dex on a dex paladin is fine.
    Wood Elf definitely says Ranger or Scout subclass Rogue to me. Rangers get benefits from dex and wisdom for sure and a woodelf is about as on point race wise as you'll get for that class. A scout rogue would get a lot out of the hiding feature, theme up some perception, get those nature skills, get some weapon proficiencies. Moving faster is very good for a rogue in the right / wrong circumstance too.

    okay so, I have a LOT of characters, and weirdly enough, not so many Elves.
    I have a Drow Divine Soul Sorcerer. his name is Galruh, and he is tied to Eilistraee. when his family found out, he was taken to the cells to hide the fact from the other houses and avoid shame. he was used by his eldest sister to practice her interrogation and torture skills. since he could heal himself in the cells afterward every day. one day, he shared a cell with a captured adventurer and soon to be slave. he saw their build and their stance. and knew them to be strong, and for the first time, healed someone else. the Paladin of Avandra he had just healed, helped him escape. he now seeks to found a city, on or near the surface, where those Drow who have turned away from their cruel gods can live in safety.
    next is a Wood Elf Kensei Monk. (who has/will have the blow gun, the long sword, the greatclub, the whip, and the trident as their Kensei weapons.) they made a grave mistake while hunting, and accidentally led an Orc band back to their village, in penance. despite few dying. they went to a monastery they knew of nearby. and in their studies and learnings under their master. learned how to craft the alloy Orichalcum. which when a weapon, is a 1/2 cost to enchant due to the ease of it, and can always act as a magic focus. when armor it grants magic resistance. they have to be cautious, as if the wrong group learns of this secret. the balance of power would be up-heaved.
    and lastly, a Shadar-kai Gloom-Stalker Ranger. she is a noble, who in her efforts to impress her father, led herself and her twin on a hunt of some cultists who had taken up shelter in the woods on their land. her brother died, and the cultists almost succeed in making her into a Shade. her father and eldest brother, as well as a few bannermen came in and saved her. and until she could prove she was not a waste as a person for her arrogance and foolishness, she was cast out. now, she seeks to bring fortune and glory to the name Glimhollow in the hopes that she will be allowed to return home.

    Drawing up my big bad today, and am having a crisis between an evil wizard Githyanki and an evil wizard High Elf, someone help an indecisive DM out please!

    • @nazaritev6482
      @nazaritev6482 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose it depends on the party's level primarily. Generally speaking, Githyanki give me a very alien otherworldly vibe, his minions could include things from the astral sea, or aberrations from the Far Realm. But on the other hand the vibes I get from an Elf Wizard is a little more close to home and potentially less of a distant threat and more of an impending threat. Fey eladrin have the ability to teleport via plane shift, so if your PC's are very good at combat, an evil elf Eladrin could be a more slippery opponent, allowing him to come back and continue his riegn of terror. His minions could include creatures from the feywild, such as a troop of Redcaps, or a coven of hags. I would recommend an Elven Wizard for a lower leveled party, and a Githyanki wizard for a higher level party.
      Also, take into consideration how this big bad evil wizard got his origins, and why he's evil. That might help steer you in the right direction.
      (Also, alot of this stuff is just my opinion so dont feel like you gotta take my word as fact, we qre all different people after all. )
      Hope this helps!

    Ah, almost forgot. The true top elf class? Wizard. 100%.
    So few races can really get done what Wizards need to on the go. Depending on your DM it can be quite hard. Elves can. No matter what there's a very good chance your party will need 8 hours of long resting and your Wizardy ass can actually work on copying down those scrolls or books into your spell book for four of those hours a day.
    So yeah you can be a great elf of whatever class, but all elves truly have a one up on wizardry over most races.

    You know I played a racist dwarf cleric who especially disliked elves. He thinks elves are a bunch of pretty boys who play the dex based classes because they can’t take a hit and being there’s hardly a strength based elf subclass he says elves hit like girls.

    Given that elves are over a hundred years old when they start adventuring, I think they should have more starting abilities. More languages, more tools, skills, instruments, games etc. If humans who start adventuring at like 16 to 20 get an a bonus skill, elves should have quite a few bonus skills.

      It's important to remember that sometimes cliche is very helpful when actually playing a character. Easy to understand cliches aren't just simpler for the player to act out, but they're easy for the party to catch on to and play off of. It can lead to a more relaxed playing experience, which in and of itself is fun.

  • @micahg196
    @micahg196 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So what is the best class for an elf? You never answered your own title for the video just like every other video in this series. Why do you keep lying to your viewers? Just stop lying and either stop making these videos or actually say the answer to your title rather than just state the obvious with these races.
