I'm fascinated by elves. They are one of my favorite ancestries in RPGs, and this is because of everything that makes them different, specially psychologically. Join me and learn what are elves in D&D, what are their particularities, and what makes them truly unique to roleplay as.

I’m new to dnd and I’m drawn to the elves, I just finished creating my first elf character not to long ago.

That is great! Don't feel forced to comply with anything I said in this video. If this serves as inspiration for you to deepen your character and have more fun, great! If it would just be a burden, just play the way you want. As long as you and the other players are aligned, the most important thing is for you to have fun, not to represent a faithful elf according to the Forgotten Realms lore :p

Frieren is an awesome exemplar of Elfhood. Centuries of makes her apathetic about the day to day.

Precisely! Frieren is so freaking good, best anime of the year by far (and it was a pretty good year, so that says something)

Thanks for the video, I integrated some you said in an elf protagonist I'm writing, although I think they are happy about filling their trance with their own memories and making a home on the real material plane. Melancholy and nostalgia starts to kicks in, when their human husband died after decades. Although they have other partners later, they always remembering their human husband.

That sounds great, Hange-san! Don't feel forced to follow the lore blindly. The best thing about knowing all this about elves is not to be constrained to make a "true" elf, but to be inspired to dig deeper and find the reasons why our elves are different than the norm. And elf that finds an enjoyable nostalgia in their trance is an amazing concept. It seems a lot similar to what we portuguese call "saudade" :)

Ofc not, I take videos as yours for inspiration, because I neither want to play a human with pointy ears nor a Tolkien elf.

thank you so helpful, me and my brother showed our cousin dnd over the summer during quarantine and he is an author and decided to turn his writings world into multiple different dnd campaigns. Eventually dnd influenced his world in such a way that elves exist now and I'm the first one to be able to roleplay one in his world so basically anything i say is canon for his worlds elves and this video let me know some ways i can play them from the other races.

Very good topic and it mirrors my thoughts about the problem (challenge) in playing nonhuman races. Psychology should be different! Sometimes very different and even completely alien!
There is a very good manga on this topic - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Recently it was published a trailer for an anime adaptation.

I’m playing my first DnD campaign as a Half Elf Druid who was raised among elves, and this was very helpful because she (and me of course lol) struggle a lot with being mixed, but also having an elven mindset because she was raised among them.

My favorite peoples of all fantasy are Elves. The Elves of Faerun are wonderfully diverse in many respects, yet certain characteristics are common to them all. Each subrace has potential to produce many different kinds of personalities, and I find it fun and satisfying to create characters from each of them, male and female alike. That we can have a Half-Elf of any of the subraces adds even more potential for interesting and fun characters 🙂

    • @TheFirstArcadianDnD

Half-elves for me add a whole new layer of delightful complexity. Being someone caught between two worlds, where on one side time moves too quickly where in the other it hardly seems to move at all adds so many roleplay opportunities. It truly is lot of fun exploring the idiosyncrasies of fantasy ancestries like this

Elves wonder that themselves. Some speculate they're just like elves while others say they are "new souls", completely unrelated to Arvandor, which may actually cause them to be discriminated by certain elven communities. It's one of those areas intentionally left blank in the lore, and for good reasons :D

How old should you make an elf you want to play as a young adult 🤔

    • @TheFirstArcadianDnD
      @TheFirstArcadianDnD  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

If I recall the lore correctly, elves start puberty more or less the same time humans do, but they only reach true adulthood at around 100 years old, so maybe an elf between 50 and 150 would do?

Sad state of affairs that our hobby requires a 3 minute preface on how role-playing isn't connected to real world race politics, and how species can be different without players being Klansmen.
Such is the state of our hobby thanks to the critical role crowd.
Roll20 is a nightmare to DM these days, full of perverts and political activists who can't leave their hangups at the door.
You handled this well however, earned a sub.

I just created my first D&D character and played the first session. My character is a Wood Elf Druid. However, because I based her on Rapunzel, she has never been in the outside world before and is super excited to experience it. Also, she loves lettuce 🥬 This lore is still very helpful though - it can inform why she is keen to adventure and collect memories, and sadness can strike her later
