@@Nerdarchy Hey I'm currently making a homebrew birdfolk race that's a little bit of a mix between Kenku and Aarakocra, but i can't figure out which of the two Kenku traits i wanna give it, so far it has flight, and talons from Aarakocra, and a single homebrew trait, and i was wondering if you had any tips?

My DM told me I could play a kenku bard, but if I did I could possibly end up on hit list for what basically amounts to copyright infringement by stealing songs. I probably could've pushed to have basically a remixing kenku dj bard but I wasn't too attached to doing a bard to begin with.

Death From Above! I'm currently playing an Aarakocra Kensai Monk/Arcane Archer Fighter. Stacking the archery abilities of the two classes is awesome especially while flying (what better way to stay at range), the monks AC bonus means I don't have to worry about flying in armour, and while it has yet to happen I think my DM is going to be surprised at just how effective I can still be in melee going in with a rapier, finesse and the Kensei and monk melee abilities.
Out of combat I've made him a military scout based on the lore of the Sky Wardens, working with cartography tools to map out terrain and enemy movements (What better way to draw a map then to do it from high above).

Just give the enemies a ranged option. Or give the enemy group a person who trains birds for scouting and messenger bird interception and have them battle the Aarakocra. Or better yet give them a Roc mount. You can make this work and have it be awesome.
If you need something more long term just have the Aarakocra randomly attacked while flying by a person riding a Gryphon that calls themselves the "Master of the Skies" who will accept no other sentient humanoid to fly.

    • @AntoineVello
      @AntoineVello 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@martingammill-beck5846 I don't need to put this kind of work into my campaign when someone picks half elf.
I have rogue characters run circles around every npc a DM throws at me. I've had monk characters make 2 DMs essentially ban mobile and one DM state mobile is in the same tier as GWM and Sharpshooter. The extra work an Aarakocra Kensei Monk who can have upwards of 60 fly speed from level 2, and bonus he attacks from range and all of his abilities recharge on a short rest would give a DM? Unfathomable.
An Aarakocra monk who is *ever* hit by the DM isn't trying hard enough.

I love the idea of a kenku wizard who was never taught magic directly by a person speaking to them, so part of them learning spells is sounding out words, using different bits and pieces of words they've heard from different people to piece together the arcane language.

Ah you can't tell by my beak but I'm smiling. My first character was an Aaracroka Monk and another was a Life Cleric however I recently was able to fulfill an idea I had from your guys Ultimate Duelist video with the legendary Kenku know as Don Corelleon! Don was apart of a mini series and after fulfilling his dreams from when he was a Cloistered Scholar of reenacting scenes from his favorite novels and fairytales sold his story to inspire other readers in the world to seek out adventure. He now lives in this sea side manor where while sipping fine wine in one hand and reading a new book in the other he felt the cool breeze upon his graying feathers that showed the approach of his nearing winter years when suddenly he notices some Sahuagin rising from the beach to attack a caravan passing by. Gently putting down his book before chugging and throwing away his glass the Don grabs his trusty rapier from the mantle, flicks his billowing emerald scarf, and adjusting his feathered hat before thinking to himself "Today is a good day for a duel." as our hero deflects a lethal blow from a Baron who is furious at the smirking Kenku before him the Don simply taps a piece of paper for the Halfling child he saved to read so he himself can tell these brigands who will send them to their end...with style. Oh boi I got into that but I suppose that's how much fun I had.

Just finished playing a campaign as an Aarakocra using Matt Mercer's gunslinger. The archery fighting style and the fact that grit points utilize wisdom made it a perfect match. I had a lot of fun, even when I was grabbed by an ogre and my wing joints were cracked so I couldn't fly for that encounter. I played him as a very laid back, free and easy type true neutral. He loved the freedom of the skies and when we were forced underground he had a lot of anxieties but it was super fun to play them out!

My wife is playing a Kenku Artificer w/ a backstory of working for a mage/artificer who exploited the Kenku's abilities to mass-produce and recreate scrolls, magical toys, etc. Eventually, the pull of wanting to learn to fly sent her out into dungeons, adventures, and in league w/ other artificers/mages from around the world.
The crow's real life reputation as highly intelligent birds and their love of picking up and bringing trinkets, shiny objects to people who treat them well has all played into the build, as well.

The Kenku warlock is an amazing idea! I'm certainly going to use that idea. What I was thinking of controversial class type would be wizard Kenku. If he sees another wizard uses a spell he could instantly copy it and would have perfect memory of it. I can't remember if its just the vocals but also actions too. Still not sure if a DM will allow it but I can see a lot of potentials with Roleplay and combat with that.

The last campaign my local group did, I played a kenku, Korben, who was an Arcane Trickster Rogue mixed with Great Old One Warlock (tome pact). He would cast his spells in Old Speech with Perfect Mimicry, he had a tentacle tip in a glass vial around his neck he would talk to and it would twitch in response. He also used his mimicry in the telepathy he got which I thought was fun. They 'speak in the audio equivalent of a ransom note cut from magazines, and that is now in the minds of his allies. He was a ton of fun to play.

Got an Aarakocra dex-based Life Domain Cleric in a side campaign. Her backstory is that she's the pet/slave of the Fire Genasi Wizard. Likes to fly in the air. Slight issue when two succubus came up top her height though, and we couldn't help her, for one reason or another (Mind-controlled, unconscious, out of good spells.) She got K.O.ed, and fell 20 feet. Luckily, due to my own situation of being knocked out three times by the foes, which lead to a checking of the rules, she wasn't dead. Then, she got lucky, rolled a Nat20 on her Death Save, stood up, and since me, and the wizard, who'd finally zapped some sense into the croc-shifted Mountain Dwarf Druid, were unconscious, she used mass healing word, bringing us back from the dead.
Let's just say that, among other things, my Yuan-Ti Paladin had been having a Dance of Death with one Succubus, while I was out of spell slots, at level 5, as I danced around with less than 10 hp. I finally took care of her. Then the cleric summoned some mastiffs to give us a bit of help - last succubus decided to leave.

Uses bard abilities to keep the spirits up on the ship. Perhaps was on a pirate ship where the sneaking abilities can be of use when raiding/scouting. Name would be Wind in the Sails or Cannon Boom.

I'm sure this just would NOT work in the rules, but at one point, what was basically a nuke being dropped was caused by a fighter with an extremely volatile potion, a flying carpet, and a natural 20. We just happened to get a new player who was a kenku in the party. He heard and witnessed this.... The day after, the orc and rat person army we've been fighting sieged our city. It was going pretty good, but we were still taking some hits. That is, until our kenku sprinted into the enemy army almost alone, and decided to mimic the sound of the explosion the previous day. This killed our DM, and he didn't even make him roll for it. This blew out numerous ear drums, and turned half of the forces on each side running. It was wonderful.

Had another small idea to have it be a younger one and have his parents been killed and now he carries a few of their bones and every so often brings one back so he could feel their spirit again.
Also just want to make crow sounds at my party members

Some Aarakocra features other than the stat boost also synergize super well with Monks, the d4 for using their Talon on an Unarmed Strike doesn't matter since the Martial Arts Unarmed Strike is the same, but it gives them a choice between Slashing and Bludgeoning for the Unarmed Strike for the few times that the difference between BPS matters which isn't much but cool. The bigger one is Unarmored Movement is a generic speed increase rather than a specific walking speed one, so it boosts any speed you have so starting at Monk 2 you've got a 60 foot fly speed which continues to get better and better. Does somewhat cannibalize some of the features though, the Unarmored Movement improvement at Monk 9 is mostly useless since flying will work better than running up walls or along water for the most part

I'm not a fan of the race but this is for sure the way I'd go. It's full of other possibilities as well like polymorph and telepathy. (edit: I'll add mimicry to that even though it should be obvious. the kenku would make an excellent infiltrator with these abilities)

made a kenku based on my username, a basic cleric kenku. was a grave domain cleric who worshipped the Raven queen. give the character a gravedigger/plague doctor feel to them. when with the haunted one background and used that concept to allow him to speak in the voices of the ghost

Campaign starting at level 5 Kenku monk way of the shadow in a party of two with a halfling rogue thief. The Dm was doing so for the first time and tossed in the deck of many things on an NPC and overlooked our slight of hand tomfoolery. I draw two cards-Fate and Throne- and my halfling compatriot drew three cards-Flames Knight and star. I used Fate to undo the curse put upon my people when we betrayed our master and instead of the three cursed we were simply cast out to the material plane and so now I have a flight speed, my own voice and creativity. Suffice it to say we got lucky and didn’t absolutely destroy the campaign. Although the Powerful devil chasing my friend will probably be a problem down the road haha

Lore Bard and Mastermind Rogue Kenku.
Not only do you have all the skills but your Mimicry has all the power and your combat abilities don't suffer much with those sneak attack die.
I played where I could only speak through repeating things said in the campaign so I also used illusion magic to help communicate to the party. It got annoying at times but there were enough hilarious moments that it was awesome and phrases started to develop into having more broad meanings even though they originally had intentional specifications when first said.
"Ambushed by Wolves" meant we were being attacked. (Usually said on watch)
"Creatures in the forest" meant there was danger ahead.
"There are all sorts of monsters in the forest." meant that we must proceed with caution.
    Etc, etc.

  • @peterbrowne7101

Aarakocra Rogue Scout Archer with Skirmisher seems thematic, but it might be wasted due to already high flight mobility. However, avoiding opportunity attacks at closer ranges would be valuable. Half your flight speed is 25 feet in every direction allowing for multiple fronts. Nothing is touching you when you have verticle. I would probably then multiclass into a caster focusing for invisibility and resume Scout until Ambush Master at Scout 13. Lots of hide, invisiblilty, sneak attack and attacks of opportunity. Scout 17 would be the capstone with two potential sneak attacks from the air. Pop invisibility. And another two. Fly behind a or rock, another two. Like an invisible hail or arrows from every direction. I don't know, I have never played an Aarakocra, or any other flying race, but the idea intriques me.

Playing a kenku warlock (archfey) right now. It’s very strange having a charismatic character who can barely talk. I keep a list of things for him to say, but otherwise he uses quill and parchment. It is a little limiting, especially when trying to cast suggestion, but it’s fun. Best day of his life was when the party found a broom of flying.

Hey Nerdarchy! New DM here, Ive been running for my friends(all new players) and so far it has been a ton of fun... but they have been very united and tackle all of the puzzles, problems and challenges as a team. I want to test their unity and throw something at them that causes inner party conflict. Do you have any videos or recommendations?

My wife has a Kenku bard and uses her mimicry to do her performances and cast her magic. We are working on an idea, creating a sound board on a tablet of collected clips of these sounds and of movie quotes to use as her dialogue. If anyone has recommendations for software/methods etc. to use in this kind of setup, I'd be happy to look into it.
    Cheers

LoL. I was thinking about the same thing as they were talking about the Kenku. My first thoughts were about recording a number of phrases and individual words and putting them in a playlist. Certain phrases get use a lot so you can have them prepared, such as 'yes', 'no', 'thank you', 'turn left / right', I was also thinking of writing down phrases that the other people at the table say during the game. Afterwards asking them to record them on my phone, so I could add to my mimicry files.
This is all off the top of my head. I haven't really thought about it in detail, yet.

I'm playing an Aarkocra Wu Jen Mystic. He was transported from the plane of air, and he just doesn't get people. He refuses to talk, just uses telepathy. He does not value money, just shiny things. His motivation for staying with the party is that they give him interesting ways to use his powers.

Quick question in regard to the Talon skill of Aarakocra, are the talons just on its feet, or do its hands have talons too? The artwork makes it seem like it's just the feet, but I wanted to make sure.

Bart would attack and hold the enemy in the water while Shriek (a strength-based ranger) rode on his head and used dual-clubs to attack in-tandem. Good times.

I'm playing my first game as a Kenku paladin. I'm better at diplomatic situations even though I can only say things like 'who?' 'why?' 'dep-dep' 'diplomatic' (he has no idea what the last word means but he likes the sound of it)
Also he has a pet mouse called Squeakers due to his urchin backstory :3

My first ever created dnd character is a kenku warlock of The Great Old One. Because i love the idea of kenku, but was afraid to end up in a situation when i need to tell something important to the party and i can't find words for it. So i made her The Great Old Ones warlock, but as i didn't want to just use telepathy all the time, i decided that her telepathic voice is a very unpleasant mix of caws and parrot-like words and she hates it so she only uses telepathy as a last resort, always apologizing constantly for the intrusion into other's minds and for how her voice sounds there

the aaracroka were designed to be monks or rangers. I think we should just get that out of the way now. they get the right ability score buffs and they can't use medium or heavy armor, which means they work best either at range or with the monk's unarmored defense if you want to turn them into a melee build (which is a bad idea)...or both thanks to the sun soul. Lore wise it doesn't make sense for them to be anything else. So yes, I think the aaracroka were designed with those two classes in mind. Kenku, on the other hand, have much more freedom. maybe not from a stat perspective, but they can wear medium and heavy armor, and the lore makes them out to be loners, whereas aaracroka are social creatures. this makes them great spell casters. they work well as bards, especially if they learned all the words they know from a wacky source. Like foul mouthed pirates. Nothing works for vicious mockery quite like a good old fashioned "Fuck you!".
