barbarian with the ancestral guardian subclass. The "I honor my forefathers" themes really speaks to me, and fits the dwarven culture/theme
I think besides that, & the above Forge Cleric, I think that perhaps Paladin's "Oath of Devotion" or "Oath of the Crown" (SCAG).

@@Nerdarchy I am playing a hill dwarf forge cleric in a game, they are so tanky. She has 20 ac at level 3 (with just chainmail, so once can afford full plate will go up further) with 30 hitpoints, with the warhammer and shield at the front line.
Ancestral Guardian barbarian is definitely in my list of characters to play too, I just love the whole 'hit me!' concept it has going. Although I am not really decided on race yet for that, mountain dwarf and variant human are the top two I am considering.
Obviously a valor bard. Standing on a boulder in a scale mail kilt, playing bagpipes inspiring your allies
Mountain Dwarf anything is the best race/class combination. It is particularly good to add a Constitution bonus, Medium Armour and Battleaxe/Warhammer to spellcasters...
Omg I love how Dave talked about the hill dwarf sorcerer my favorite character I have played is my hill dwarf dragonic sorcerer Lorean stormbeard who love to use ice spells and hitting people with a booming blade battle axe
One of my favorite characters to play was a Dwarf Artificer, though the Dwarf Forge Cleric was a fun one too as well as thematically appropriate
Honorable mention for Hill Dwarf Monk if you take the Dwarven Fortitude feat at level 4 for good shenanigans

I played a Hill Dwarf Draconic Sorcerer. I took toughness at 4th level and had more hps than the fighter, with a decent AC as well. In the homebrew world we were playing in, arcane magic was outlawed by the dragon overlords. I carried a battleaxe and claimed to be only a smith.

The hidden racial of dwarves, not being slowed by heavy armour, is my favourite one. Getting to be a hill dwarf life cleric and wearing heavy armour with only 8 strength is really nice.
Love my mountain dwarf transmutation wizard! Heavy armour feat at 4th, and crafted his own suit with fabricate.

In summary:
Duergar (gray dwarf): martial class, rogue
Hill dwarf: Cleric, druid.
Mountain dwarf: fighter, barbarian, paladin.
Unorthodox classes: spellcasters

I’ve been working on a home brew race for my campaign, the canyon Dwarf or the silver tongued Dwarves. These guys have a +1 to charisma and advantage on concentration checks, but not the other two things of war caster. Plus the southlands Dwarf from Kobold Press is a great race to play
You should do a breakdown of the skills. That's like 6 episodes. Dex skills, how you handle the hiding in combat. Intelligence, what you roll and get when you succeed on int. Check on a creature...ect.
Oh ya always loved the dwarf played many a fighter and both a magic user and cleric. Great times. can never have to many hit points.

I am thinking of going hill dwarf dragon born sorcerer. You actually mention it here in detail, and I think it can be rather an amazing build.
Dwarves are my favorite race in pretty much all settings they are in. Currently running a very sturdy dwarven Mountain Keeper paladin (oath of ancients reflavor, features are the same), who focuses on constitution. DM let us take 1 uncommon MI, which led to me taking dwarven fortitude (+1 con and ability to restore a hit die during dodge action) + periapt of wound closure (doubles all hit die healing). Needless to say, he rocks. Hard.
It'd be nice to see what you can come up with for hobgoblins. The only thing I think really works is wizard to make something like a gish with their weapon and armor training. Pretty much every other class can already use all the weapons and armor you could ever ask for. The only other one I can think of that fits is a non draconic sorcerer.

One of my favorite Dwarven character builds is a Mountain Dwarf Monk, but any Dwarven subclass will do.

Dwarves are my favorite race from the OG fantasy races, they make excellent fighters, barbarians, clerics and even druids, rangers and paladins (the later being thematically).
Gimli was always my go-to when creating a dwarf character, and I think he represents well the whole tradionalist, lawful good dwarf. He's steadfast and loyal, always keeping his friends close where he can protect them and will follow them anywhere.
I personally always liked the idea of the mountain dwarf paladin, specially after the SCAG released the tanky Oath of the Crown.
Overall, dwarves are awesome, but not as awesome as Half-Orcs (my favorite of all D&D races).
Dragonborn would also make good paladins, mechanicly.
+2 stength
+1 Charisma
Or a stregnth based drachonic sourcorer.
appreciate the analysis. i was hoping that somewhere during this analysis, i would hear something about being a dwarven ranger even though it might not fit nicely with the dwarven race, i'm trying to think of a character that is "outside the box."

Awww yeah. Good to see the nod to Sorcerer for the Hill Dwarf... one of my favorite combinations!
Mountain Dwarf Sorcerer. I'm leaning more towards the divine soul. 16 str, 14-16 con, 14 cha and then the rest of the point buy where you want it. You get medium armor, you get extra weapons, you get 2 "attacks" with booming/green flame blade.
If you do choose a divine soul, you are basically a charisma cleric. You were chosen by the gods so you get to choose between cleric or sorc spells. Your ally cleric won't know what to do. You tag team a social encounter with the paladin and then compete to out-cleric him in combat.
My idea of the best Dwarf is a Duergar Gloomstalker Dwarf with a heavy crossbow and the archery fighting style (or with the Great Axe and the Defense fighting style), with a 3 level dip into Rogue Assassin if you're doing the archery style.
I agree that's very good. Currently playing a mountain dwarf variant of that but with scout instead of assassin.
Assassin synergizes great with the gloom stalker first round boost but it's a little more "one trick" than I prefer. This variant makes a great tunnel scout. If only you could sneak attack with handaxes. Heavy crossbow it is.
Strength Rogue Grappler for a Duergar for the invisibility and Enlarge (Advantage + Expertise on grappling

Mountain Dwarf as a light cleric in Curse Of Strahd. All the Dwarven martial proficiencies change it from a rear caster to a frontline undead burner.

My hill dwarf "Kyll Fallens" is a bard and I fully plan on adding in the fighter sub class after level 10. So far he's a well rounded character.
One thing i like about the mountain dwarf is that you can basically have heavy armor proficiency with any class at level 4, and if the class would be good at melee but isn't already a melee class, it can be interesting. I have a mountain dwarf warlock i've wanted to play. i'm mixing it up and going great old one instead of hexblade, but still going pact of the blade, just because it would be fun
Would love to see you guys do this with the Aarakocra or Genasi races next

Since you did dwarves it got me thinking. What's everyone opinion on the ua artificer class? My favorite character to play so far was a dwarf who was attempting to become an artificer as the art had been lost centuries prior. Disclaimer I was not playing D&D but a Homebrew game amalgamation of Fantasy Dice and Rolemaster.
I think this series will be awesome. I loved the first one.

Last week I was thinking of trying a, mountain dwarf dual wield strength rouge, since to pull of a sneak attack RAW the weapon need to have the finesse tag, not the wielder actually using his/her dexterity as the modifier.
envisioned him as more of a intimidating brawler thug type of rouge over the super sneaky one.
With some darts/thrown daggers as a ranged option.
Dwarven broad knives (short swords) for the win.

There're only three that matter, High, Wood, and Dark.
Everything else is just padding.
High for Eldritch Knight, Arcane Trickster, Wizard, or any other class that uses Int as a casting stat.
Drow for Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, Paladin, Swashbuckler, or any other class that uses Cha as a casting stat.
Wood for Cleric, Monk, Druid, Ranger, or any other class that uses Wis as a casting stat. I'd also use them for any specifically physical class like Fighter or Barbarian because while their stats don't specifically benefit those classes, the extra mobility doesn't hurt.
Drow Warlock with Devil Sight has normal vision to 120 feet irrespective of whether it's normal light, dim light, or dark light, or even magical dark.
Not that that's hugely important as normal Darkvision is usually good enough.
yeah, the cleric is a clear winner for a dwarf. I was thinking about the sorcerer gish, but I don't think it's a good enough build to be a front liner due to sorcerers missing out on a bunch of defensive spells from the wizard class.
This is my race! I've always wanted to be shorter but retain my strength or even have greater strength!
Minotaur cleric, axe + Shield + heavy armor, but of healing domain.
Absolutely love my Mountain Dwarf wild magic Sorcerer. I play him like Avatar from Wizards.

My dwarf is exactly the same. Being playing him for a while. Just leveled up and go polymorph as a 4th level spell and became a great ape. I rolled a crit and did like 64 damage and pretty much killed a high drow priestess. The dm was like ,"wtf, dude" 😂
It's hella generic, but the Forge Cleric Hill Dwarf is a pretty good mesh. Forge Clerics get Heavy armor proficiency, but not a martial weapon proficiency - making the Weapon training racial a good fit. The increased HP and Constitution lets the Dwarf actually stand toe-to-toe in combat as a Cleric. It's also a good (but yeah, generic) fit thematically - searching for all the long lost Dwarven works for a Dwarven god like Moradin, Tharmekhul or Ulaa. The +1 Wisdom a good fit. Having to balance Strength, Constitution and Wisdom isn't ideal, but makes the Dwarf a fairly flexible secondary melee or caster. There is a bit of overlap with the Tool Proficiency and the bonus proficiency to Smith's Tools, but having two tool proficiencies (or even three for the background) could be interesting.
I'd have to agree that the Forge Cleric is definitely perfect with the Dwarf. In regards to the overlapping Tool Prof, depending on your GM, it might not be a problem because some might allow you to switch one Tool Proficiency for another Tool, while (I'm sure that this would be rare) some/few/etc might allow the Tool Proficiency to either get Advantage if the TP are the same (In this instance Smith's Tools from Race & Subclass) or a +# Bonus when using the Tools or (I'm sure this is even rarer) turning it into Expertise.
Fighter1/ForgeCleric2. - Hill Dwarf
Fighting style is worth the Fighter dip imo, especially if you are taking advantage of those AC bumps the forge cleric gets. Grab defence for another +1. All you are losing is one lvl 7 spell and the auto god help, and that's ONLY if you hit lvl 20 anyway.
Even a Mountain Dwarf Forge Cleric would be good. Slightly less WIS but you can wade into combat and use your hammer (or battleaxe) and be a good front line tank/healer. Warcaster would almost be a necessity, and the higher CON will help there.
It's actually great to have the proficiency with both mason's tools and smith's tools for when you get Fabricate at 7th level, allowing you to make most things.
HEAVILY ARMORED MOUNTAIN DWARF WIZARD FTW!

@@cannastartover1720 20 AC! 20 AC! 25 with the Shield Spell, and you can also add Blur or Mirror Image! Make him an Abjurer and you have the tankiest wizard ever! The only way to surpass it is Bladesinging which is completely balanced as all things should be!

Came to suggest this.
Mountain Dwarf Abjurer.
Start with a bunch of utility spells from delving into magical tunnels with the clan: "I was the man for arcana. The others would say 'Ar-can-a understand these runes' and here I come"
Mountain dwarf is THE best subrace in 5e. Currently building a Dwarf rogue scout subclass. Too strong 💪

Honestly I would think for the grey dwarf with their spell like abilities that would add to the capabilities and viability of a warlock, I'd love to see a vengeful hexblade grey dwarf sworn to wipe illithids from the under dark

This is how i tend to make characters-i pick a race and choose the optimal class for it, or vise versa.

Duegar probably from a roleplay standpoint are probably my favourite race to play
If the next Race could be from any of the books, I'd say either Goblin/Hobgoblin/Bugbear or Aasimar, both from Volos Guide. Although, the Genasi would be an interesting video to see.

1) Goblin
2) Hobgoblin
3) Bugbear
4) Aasimar
5) Genasi
6) **Roll Again**
Dice rolled: 3 (Bugbear)
Though, my actual guess would've been either Goblin or Aasimar. So, we shall see if the dice rolled correctly or if one of the 2 that my gut was going towards was correct in the next video.
I think the Hill Dwarf is also a great pick for barbarian

Particularly so for the Hill Dwarf with their bonus on Wis. I'm surprised they didn't bring up that one.
Dont forget to slap on dwarven fortitude so you can dodge heal and attack in one turn, zen AF

I have one of those unexpected dwarf builds I really want to play when I get the chance: a female Hill Dwarven Hunter Ranger Folk Hero with a peg leg. Story goes that her ancestors got driven out of the mountains by a dragon and settled down in a forest, where they've come to live much like halflings and forget how dangerous the world around them can be. She learns the hard way, through many misadventures in the forest, and does her best to protect them from the dangers they refuse to see. Some years ago she used fire to scare off a troll that got into the village, but the battle cost her a right leg and half her left hand, and she carved a wooden leg herself.
Actually as I think about it, I have a lot of dwarf character concepts. Every one of them breaks the normal dwarven stereotype in some way. A dwarven bardbarian who calms his rage through music...a short, scrawny dwarf who is normally content with bartending but turns into a hulking Dwarvish brute when he gets angry...a stocky, regimented Hill Dwarvish Hoplite...a dwarven divine soul sorcerer who shapes stone with his magic...a dwarven blacksmith who compacted with a demon after nearly dying in the forge...and a dwarven bounty hunter who invented a hand cannon and a giant mechanical wolf to mount it on. I don't think I've ever built a Gimli wanna-be and I probably never will. I think the closest I've ever come to the stereotype is a dwarven paladin of devotion/forge cleric, who ideally seeks out a Dwarven Thrower as his primary weapon.

Before I watch, I’d say Hill Dwarf Barbarian, enjoy having the most HP possible, and go Tundra Storm Soul, grab the “tough” feat and you will never go down.

hey guys i was wondering about the shadar-kai and what might be some good class options for them as you can doing best class options for particular races, i've been a bit stuck trying to figure out a more martial character for the shadar-kai and am not sure. the suggestions and idea's from you guys can help a lot and spur new things to come forth. if you could do this for me i'm sure i could make a pretty cool shadar-kai

Drunken Master Monk could be interesting thematically. My poor Dex score at early levels though.

I find that a race that is difficult to map out a path for is the Gith. I just don't really know what to do with them.
Marcus Githyanki are natural Eldritch Knights. Githzerai are Monks. Githyanki are also good wizards, Githzerai are surprisingly good Druids. Against mechanics, both are thematically good Warlocks. And both really should be psionics if those rules ever happen.
@@blshouse Githyanki are natural EKs just like Mountain dwarves are natural fighters, it fits well put doesn't quite sit right mechanically.
Also with them not truly being from the material plane being druids or clerics also looks a bit off.
Something that really ticks most of or all the boxes both mechanically and flavour wise doesn't seem like its there.
Edit: at least until we get psions of some kind.

Personally, I've made a mt. dwarf lore bard with war caster who double wields handaxes and stays up front. He's more of a skald than a traditional western european bard.

Constitution is always a prime stat. It always matches my main stat. Hp is more important when you add feats and upgrades. Forget AC get HP! Lol
