We haven´t that problem in Europe. Nobody indoctrinates us. At school, the subject called "religion" is about the history of world´s religions. But not all the pupils of a class have to attend. If parents consider it could harm her children´ minds, then they don´t have this subject. Parents and teachers say that we have to grow up first and that we could, as an adult, decide for ourselves if we need one religion or not. Parents consider this subject to be very personal and that only someone with a developed mind can see into it. When I turned 18 I decided that there were no interesting religions that I would consider to follow and that was it for me.
It can be argued that all people are indoctrinated, even if it is after they choose a religion. After all, cult members are often on the brink of adulthood and beyond when they decide to join the insanity.
Yeah my mum is Church of Scotland, goes most Sundays but she never ever took home religion with her or tried to impress it upon us in any way (she didn't, and still doesn't now all 3 of us have moved out, have a cross on her wall). It really is a more personal thing for her and as for when i was at school in the 90s that's how i was taught as well, we were taught about different world religions (even a little bit about 'astral travel' for a week haha) but it wasn't something we were told we should follow or anything, it was up to us and as you say if a parent didn't want their kid there they didnt have to be although i don't remember anyone in my classes not going because it was frankly quite interesting and we had a pretty good teacher
Actually, not true. In Spain, "religion" class is a class about Catholic religion taught by a person who is not officially a teacher (they have a masters in education, but don't pass a state examination) and is chosen by the Church/proposed by the Bishop. We now have "religion" classes also taught by protestant teachers in places where there are a lot of protestant students. It would be amazing if these classes were about the history of religion and taught about all religions from a comparative perspective.
When you say, "did Jesus exist?", it's sort of a loaded question. This is why there is always a slight hesitation before scholars or atheist answer this. Did Jesus as the New Testament gospels describe him? NO! Did a teacher exist that these myths likely formed around? Yeah, probably.
There probably was a guy named Jesus who pissed off the Romans for some reason and who may have been executed by them. But that is all. Anything beyond that as described in the New Testament is mythology, i.e. just some bullshit people made up.

Grew up in a strict Christian home. Such a pity that young minds should be deceived by any form of religion. Now at the end fase of my life, I have clarity and am free from the bondage of religion. It took me many years to come to terms with what I had been taught to believe and came to realise through curiosity and interest in science and logical thinking. For me, the whole of the cosmos carry a spiritual component - far removed from any form of religion: an "emotional awareness" of being part of a larger organism is what established this for me. To me ; we are not to bow down to any gods, devils, religions, etc. What is the Infinite Mind; it is thinking in action, action in thinking. The moment of this universe is what the Infinite mind is presently thinking to be in action...
To begin with, I am impressed with infinity, the infinity of the universe. I don't think there is an explanation of that. It is proof that we don't know everything. I think the thing that surprises me most is how many people *do* believe that an historical Jesus existed. I've scoured every source I can find to learn about the historical evidence for Jesus, and it's virtually non-existent. There are ZERO first-hand accounts, it's all oral stories that were written down decades or centuries later, in different languages, by anonymous scribes who pilfered each other's stories. I believe there are two VERY brief written entries, one associated with Pontius Pilate and one associated with the historian Josephus, that *could* be references to an historical Jesus, but I've also read that the Josephus entry has since been debunked as a later forgery Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying that I know that the historical Jesus didn't exist. I could no more disprove his existence than I could disprove the existence of his Sky Daddy. But I haven't seen enough evidence to get to "he probably existed." I don't think it's all that probable. Yet people still rather believe whatever else there is instead of the gospels. Who BTW follow the conventions for historical biographies to a t. Which of course doesn't mean everything happened as described. But there really is no doubt that Jesus existed. Besides - they weren't oral stories written down centuries later. Not even the most critical scholar believes that. 1) ancient Judaism was a literal society, so no reason to assume there was much of an "oral phase" of the tradition at all, and that's not speculation but archeological fact (Google "ostraka"), 2) even the most mainstream scholars believe that the gospel of Mark was written pre 70 ad. The earliest fragment of John who many consider the latest gospel (but even that is in doubt) is from around 125. There are several arguments that can tell us that Jesus did exist. From that he was killed in a way that jews considered a disgrace, since that they need to make fake additions to his real story, like he was born in Bethlem, so jews could believe he was the Mesiah, when actually he was born in Nazareth. If you are going to invent a new total character why you don't create it in a way that jews can believe without a doubt that is the chosen one? In addition to that, we know Paul did exist and his letters were written by him, where he is ensuring he knew Peter and the others. But he recognized he did not meet Jesus, what brings more reliability to his story. For sure he knew people who ensured knowing Jesus and who gave hime details of his real life, like he was from Nazareth, he wasn't descendent of King David and her mother wasn't virgin

I've watched a lot of videos of Mr. Dawkins over the last few decades. I've never seen him call anyone stupid. I've seen him call their ideas stupid, but not the people themselves.
I am also wondering why she feels the need to have a dig at Richard Dawkins, when he pretty much said the same as she did many years ago, and has a much wider spectrum of knowledge than a bible historian. People are queuing up to debate Dawkins, so he expects them to come prepared to a debate, especially at this level. I thought Francesca would be more sympathetic to a university professor constantly having abuse hurled at him just for doing his job.
The ability to admire the bible without requiring it to be the word of some god is admirable scholarship. Richard Dawkins is a scientist who takes issue not with biblical literature but with those who confuse it with actual scientific knowledge. They are pretty mean about their views as well, except that they lack any evidence to back them up! I could listen to Francesca discuss the bible all day.
@johnjameson6751 she isn't really doing that all. She's scrutinising a book that claims to factually accurate that has been used as the foundation for many of the values we hold today. She's absolutely right to be doing so.
Yes! Like when Lot gave his daughters to a mob to be raped to protect strangers who were pretending to be angels. Later on, Lot's daughters got him drunk and raped him. Murder, genocide, infanticide, incest, etc. It's a true "family values" manual.
not all of them are great stories. Perhaps read Judges 19 and the horrific outcome of the concubine and how after being gang raped and killed and mutilated into multiple pieces.
Actually many scholars do not believe Jesus existed. The ones that might think he did, questioned his divinity. Joseph Atwell's book Caesar's Messiah plainly lays out why Jesus was not a historical figure and how the Romans were responsible for the invention of Jesus and Christianity. A great read on many levels.
It's just amazing to me that although the Bible is collection of mythical tales. You have millions or a billion (probably a stretch) of people that believe the Bible is real. That what happened in the Bible actually happened, I know a couple of these people who are my family members. Francesca Stavrakopoulou is stunning both inside and out 🥺Her knowledge of the Bible is impeccable.
The Bible is the written thoughts of Hebrews living on the Sinai Peninsula in the Bronze Age. The collection describes their god beliefs, their rituals, and their relationships with their neighbors.
Inaccurate assertion - Linguistic analysis of the texts suggests they were probably written in the Iron Age and later - Bronze age writings are exceedingly rare though stories set in the bronze age maybe based on oral traditions are included. The Aramaic based Hebrew script of the Old Testament dates back to about 500 BC but the paleo Hebrew script (derived from Phoenecian script) goes back another 500 years before that . While the Bronze age persisted longer further from the middle Eastern centre of civilisation . It is pretty clear most of the Hebrew Bible was was written down after the "Bronze age collapse" in the middle east . Writings in the Books Kings and Chronicles and after can be cross references with other non Biblical historical sources. Before that written histories are sparce and usually non existent. IN classical civilisations such as Ancient greece this marks the boundaries between what we call histories , ans the more mythological tales of heroes , nymphs gods, godesses titans etc. It is unlikely the texts were written in the Siniai Peninsula - linguistic and other evidence suggest some were written during the exile in Babylon or in Jerusalem /Canaan. Please do at least a little research before parroting inaccurate unsubstantiated theories
Saying that you've been to Jerusalem doesn't make the story true. I've seen Spiderman and I've seen New York. I've seen Pulp Fiction and I've seen LA. It's cool when you know the stories' settings and you visit the place, but that doesn't mean the story isn't a story. The problem with the Bible is everyone argues able whether it is real, but it doesn't matter. The wisdom, the stories, and the community organisation is the point. It is a snapshot in time. There's good and bad to derive from our stories. I stopped believing in Santa Claus: that doesn't mean the story is unimportant and the representation of giving isn't valuable. I also stopped belief in Gods, but there's good stuff in the Bible, the Bagavad Gita, etc. Learn. Be Kind. That's what Jesus would want, right?
I actually agree to a point, however the thing that bugs me is that most people take it way further than just admitting they are nice stories (I don’t think the idea the idea of burning in hell is that nice though), and to me that does matter. I like the idea of uniting people and community spirit, but I don’t think anyone should be shamed for asking questions or told that evolution (for example) is a lie. Also, don't forget that the stories in the bible aren't the only religious texts
Carl Sagan once said that he saw no evidence that there is a God, or that that there is not a God. Like Carl, I don't "believe" anything. I only accept things supported by significant scientific evidence. But I really liked this video.

I think that's kind of what we need in the schools here in the U.S.

I believe there are two VERY brief written entries, one associated with Pontius Pilate and one associated with the historian Josephus, that *could* be references to an historical Jesus, but I've also read that the Josephus entry has since been debunked as a later forgery
Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying that I know that the historical Jesus didn't exist. I could no more disprove his existence than I could disprove the existence of his Sky Daddy. But I haven't seen enough evidence to get to "he probably existed." I don't think it's all that probable. I think people believed the nonsense they were told two thousand years ago just like they do today
Also, when Trumpers try to tell me that rhe United States was "founded as a Christian nation," I like to tell them about the Jefferson Bible.
Funny how the gospels are the historical sources closest in time to the actual events they talk about that we have for all of antiquity. The reason why we have no earlier textual evidence is simple - the material didn't last that long.
@MrSeedi76 those are certainly words. Most of your statements are factually incorrect, however, and the gospels are not true in any meaningful way. There's virtually zero evidence for the existence of Jesus. The gospels not only plagiarized each other while also wildly contradicting each other, but they also weren't written down until decades and decades after the supposed death of Jesus.
These are myths that were passed along as oral stories and were translated from one language to another to another, while also being revised and altered according to the agendas of the scribes who wrote them down
There is no evidence that your fairy tales are reai

I love her energy and the respectful way that she deals with this touchy subject.I agree that Dawkins comes across as arrogant when discussing with Believers. Sorry pal - the reality, OBVIOUSLY, has absolutely no obligation to be confluent with your mythology or beliefs.
