Everyone is born free of religion. It depends on where you were born and what religion your parents choose to spoon feed you. Religion like alcohol should be illegal until one turns 18 years old and can then think intelligently on what religion to choose or choose no religion at all.
Make the age that people can be introduced to religion at least 25, when their brains are fully developed.. if that were the case religion, would disappear very quickly.
If people were not introduced to religious dogma until they were 25 years old, religion would disappear very quickly. The reason is that adults are much less likely to believe supernatural bullshit than children. Children think adults know everything and cannot be wrong.
Agreed but it depends whether they've learned what religion is by 18. People convert at all ages, for countless reasons. Where do they learn about critical thinking skills and cognitive biases? Not in school, not around the dinner table, certainly not in church. People are forced to seek out that knowledge on their own.

Can’t believe I was a Christian for 50 years until I read Greek,Sumerian and Egyptian mythology. The Bible stole so much from these mythological stories 🤔
I read all of those I'm not an atheist. For example let's take the flood account. If there was a worldwide flood you'd expect to see it written in multiple sources. Matter of fact if the only place that the flood was mentioned was the Bible you would see atheist saying see if there was an actual flood you'd see it multiple places. For me this is more proof of the Bible's accuracy.

The Noah’s Ark story is about the flooding that periodically devastated the inhabitants of the Tigris Euphrates river valley region in ancient Mesopotamia, after the birth of Agriculture 10 thousand years ago. The wise farmer always saved two of every domesticated livestock so that they could start over again once the two rivers receded. The epic myth of Noah represented a symbolic hero farmer who saved his entire family and livestock from those devastating floods. The region between these two rivers became "the entire world" for the early Mesopotamian people, when the entire population was only one million globally.
Wholesome story you outlined but not the truth. The message in the story of Noah is the first thing Christianity teaches. Why? It serves as the bedrock of changing perceptions at a critical age of a child, when they are most curious and open to manipulation like teaching the sins. Christianity is hostile toward mankind. A law must ban teaching ideologies of any kind to children. Back to the flood story. You see folks how god got this right? No interracial marriages. No same sex pairing, and each to his own kind. While our scripture classes were lightweight, leaving kids to read said scripture at their leisure was disastrous for credulity! The Old Testament is just one long litany of the kind of malicious, and deceitful behavior that would earn a pupil serious punishment. The prolific murders, racist massacres and mass rapes were no different from those for which Nazis were hanged at Nuremberg. The Gospels were full of "just so" justifications, like why do the ancestors of Joseph matter, given he was supposedly not Jesus' father ? The Letters of Saint Paul were nothing more than the hijacking of the cult by a new self-appointed prophet, and the bureaucratic organization of tyranny. The Revelations of St John the Divine were just plain crack pot, like the ravings of a druggie. I was raised catholic. The story about Noah's Ark was what led directly to my disbelief. I was 12 when, thanks to science books aimed at children (I think they were called 'Childcraft'?), as well as the outward doubt by my protestant mother, I figured that out on my own. It seemed like well-meaning people around me on the catholic side CHOSE to believe metaphor as a truth to suit their narrative. I'm no intellectual by a long shot. But having the freedom to hear the scientific and logical POV alongside the 'beliefs' I was raised with, sowed the seeds of doubt. Watching the less educated, more religious catholic, side of the extended family, against the protestant, more logical side of the extended family, I was keen to the contrast. There was so much shame and guilt that accompanied the catholic side - and going through puberty then adolescence, I felt nature itself leading me away from their ideology. They were kind, good people whom I am fortunate to have known. Those who remain, remain close to this day & still don't 'force' me to believe a single thing they believe. I always thought that perhaps they don't truly believe the tenets of their religion either, at least to some extent. That it's tradition, or therapy perhaps, that keeps them tethered to it. I was respectful & told them I believe to some extent, things went better that way. But then I heard Christopher Hitchens speak on some public BBC broadcast, and lost any 'ceasefire' status I might have held. I was armed with the usual old arguments - "what about the charity that religion inspires", and "what would happen to society if there are no eternal repercussions for anything we do". Secrets and scandals emerge, allegations of clergy abuse became fact, rampant and was discussed publicly for the first time. Someone from your town finds the strength to come forward. Then another. Then another, you know that one. And another - look how messed up they are, despite their parents being devout catholics, good people, etc. Thank you to Mr Hitchens, Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss, and even Bill Maher to some extent. Watching Maher join the good company of Hitch in dismantling the overtly arrogant & ignorant Bill O'Reilly has been a true pleasure.

You don't know what you're talking about. Teaching people to be humble, to love others as yourself, to do to others as you would want them to do to you, to help the poor, to help others, etc, is literally what the world needs. @@Nathaniel-c3c The basic Catholic beliefs are found in the The Apostles' Creed, and the Ten Commandments. Whether you believe in G-d or not, everyone owes a cultural debt to the Catholic Church for founding the greatest universities in the history of mankind, the preservation of ancient history, and the establishment of what is known as Western civilization. On an individual basis, Catholics believe in the doctrine of Salvation, that God wants everyone to live a peaceful, happy life, centered on the teachings of Jesus, the Son of God.
Judeo- Christianity is not Christian. "An eye for an eye" doctrine is not compatible with an active "Love thy neighbor" doctrine. Yet 2000 years later they're still intermingled and call it Christianity. The same appears in Islam also. The Jews simply did not accept Jesus teachings in their religion of "The Law" highly opposed by Jesus, that's why he had to be terminated.
You're taking something out from its time-context. "An eye for an eye" wasn't about retribution. It was about proportionality in punishment. Letting the punishment fit the crime is something modern people take for granted but they shouldn't take it as something that 'of course' would be obvious to all societies throughout history since it hasn't always been the law in history.
There is a big difference between knowing and believing. Knowledge is based on provable facts while belief is based on what hasn't been proved. That's why believers get antsy when challenged because they don't have facts to back them up.
Better get your challenges in order. Christopher Michael Langan, aka the smartest man in the world, is a believer and would run circles around any atheist . . .
Christianity says to a poor child who comes from the wrong side of town, who has parents who are alcoholics, who has been physically and mentally abused, who is sad and afraid....., "You're an evil sinner who deserves to go to hell!" To that child, Christianity says, "But, God has made a way out for you. But, in order for you to get out, you must confess your allegiance to Christ and commit to doing everything the pastor tells you that the Bible is saying for you to to... Have no self confidence, for you are a worthless sinner who is incapable of doing anything good for yourself... Forgive and forget your parents for beating, neglecting, and raping you. Praise God for saving you and be happy you are not going to burn in hell so long as you continue to believe and follow what we interpret the bible says is true for you" Ugh. See, the gospel can take hurting children and completely devastate their spirit of independence and survival. The truth isn't kind, either.
@dutube99 It says that to the entire world, and that includes poor kids and rich kids. The message of condemnation and damnation is given to everybody that takes the time to read it. I think that that is particularly demoralizing for abused and neglected children. That's the point I'm asserting.

Prayer is wishful thinking. A do nothing approach to sounding like you care. You forget the person the moment you turn your back. Helping the homeless is noble but not coming from you. Believe or die! How gangster! P.S. How does one find amazement in the birth of a soul, and believeable the lie of sin? You will be asked at the end of our life. Why did you believe in sin? Show the evidence without pointing your finger at yourself and anyone else. You will be standing pointing at our Creator. Believing in sin, you become your own god. You judge and condemn. You are not a god. Trust is our purpose in life. What did we believe from the evidence of a Creator? The unconditional love we were given without fear on our birth or the fear you we must learn to love? The innocence in every living creature in birth is the presence of our creator. How will you explain to our Creator what you believed in one word? Duped? Betrayed? Judas? I grew up in a household where religion was not just present but imposed. Attending church and Sunday school every Sunday was mandatory. Over time, I became aware of the hate, judgement and homophobia that permeated from the church walls.
The apostle Paul in the New Testament makes it very clear that God is sovereign and has the right to decide who is predestined to heaven or to hell and that faith is a gift from god. Therefore, anyone who does not believe in Christ is damned before he was even born, predestined to judgment. This doctrine is known as "Calvinism" and there are many scriptures which refer to this, especially the N.T. . Unsurprisingly, Christians never mention this and because most of them are ignorant of it. Instead, they promote what's known as "Arminianism" which says salvation is a free gift for anyone who chooses to accept it. Those of us know the canon and judged it objectively know that its convoluted and awful.
These were some of the forbidden questions that got me banned from the family church at 6 years old almost 40 years ago. If a child can poke holes in the narrative then how can you not see it's complete BS

@@roberthenry9319 you completely misunderstood my comment if you think that I'm a Christian! I am not. But I do know what I'm talking about the bible because I aspired to become a pastor... It was the learning of it that set me free of it's delusions.
Everyone is born free of religion. It depends on where you were born and what religion your parents choose to spoon feed you. Religion like alcohol should be illegal until one turns 18 years old and can then think intelligently on what religion to choose or choose no religion at all.
Most people are born into it. That's a big part of the problem. Being brainwashed from birth is very hard to overcome.
Had that happen to me for a long time it's definitely just brain washing but there clever at it using social media to try and keep up now but to be real I think there gonna play there big hand to early
@@MichaelMeasho-s9s the devil repented, didn't you hear? Yeah, he is one of the good guys now. I think God is going to make him in charge of human health and sadness.
If this doesn't sound right, that is because there is no such thing as the devil, therefore he couldn't repent. If he were real, then he could have repented and this wouldn't sound wrong. Since the bible only provides the status quo 2000 years ago, no one could ever know if the devil has repented or if he is still evil. Thank you Mr Maher for saying what needed to be said.
It is the LOVE of money which is warned about.

Money.

Nobody explained this mechanism better than Shskespeare. Ever hear of the play *Timon of Athens?* No wonder (you haven't). The play denounces, drumroll:
$m.o.n.e.y$
And somehow, any time one gets the idea to stage it on any public scale, rules of censorship and the call for the slicing and dicing of the original text beyond recognition.
Timon, after a series of hard knocks that teach him the sad but "duh" truth: "money can't buy you love" (or friendships).
Here it is in all its genius:
Timon of Athens:
“Gold? Yellow, glittering, precious gold?
No, Gods, I am no idle votarist! ...
Thus much of this will make black white, foul fair,
Wrong right, base noble, old young, coward valiant.
... Why, this
Will lug your priests and servants from your sides,
Pluck stout men’s pillows from below their heads:
This yellow slave
Will knit and break religions, bless the accursed;
Make the hoar leprosy adored, place thieves
And give them title, knee and approbation
With senators on the bench: This is it
That makes the wappen’d widow wed again;
She, whom the spital-house and ulcerous sores
Would cast the gorge at, this embalms and spices
To the April day again. Come, damned earth,
Thou common whore of mankind, that put’st odds
Among the rout of nations.”
I disagree... religion contributes to ignorance but it's not the root of ignorance.

Catholicism is an example of religion. Jesus is not. Jesus wants a personal relationship with each one of us through prayer on a regular basis. Read the New Testament for yourself. Not a Catholic Bible. I recommend a red-letter edition of the New International Version (NIV) with Jesus's words in red. It's in modern English. If your main language is another language, get a red-letter, modern-language edition in that language.

Religion is man made. Faith is Divine. Whether consciously or subconsciously we all strife for peace of mind.
A friend of ours is a hard core Catholic. Every time we eat or go out to dinner he prays and blesses his food. I feel like saying to him "Do you actually believe this does anything to your food?" It astounds me how relatively intelligent people can believe such hocus pocus.
Organized religion is a mess, that's true. Seems to me that's what Jesus said.
I saw the mountain in Turkey where Noah’s ark sat. Our countries weren’t even found back then, so it’s a crock that the whole world flooded

Teaching Christianity or any other fairytale to children is the worst child abuse in the world they never get over it
You don't know what you're talking about. Teaching people to be humble, to love others as yourself, to do to others as you would want them to do to you, to help the poor, to help others, etc, is literally what the world needs. The world needs The Prince of Peace, Jesus. The problem is that much of what people call "Christianity," at least in America, is a politically-corrupted thing that isn't actually following Jesus.
Gods pronouns are He/Him (capitals only) but nobody talks about how absurd it is. God's were created by man, by men.
Yep!

Christopher Michael Langan, aka the smartest man in the world, is a believer and would run circles around any atheist . . .
Bill O'Reilly was quite the dweeb. Amazing he lasted so long.
The Christian Crusaders battle cry: “For God and Profits!”
Has this changed yet?
Christianity says to a poor child who comes from the wrong side of town, who has parents who are alcoholics, who has been physically and mentally abused, who is sad and afraid.....,
"You're an evil sinner who deserves to go to hell!"
To that child, Christianity says, "But, God has made a way out for you.
Praise God for saving you and be happy you are not going to burn in hell so long as you continue to believe and follow what we interpret
the bible says is true for you"
Ugh.
See, the gospel can take hurting children and completely devastate their spirit of independence and survival.
The truth isn't kind, either.
Where does it say that? Seriously where exactly?
@dutube99 It says that to the entire world, and that includes poor kids and rich kids. The message of condemnation and damnation is given to everybody that takes the time to read it.
I think that that is particularly demoralizing for abused and neglected children. That's the point I'm asserting.
@larrysbrain1627 where specifically though? Chapter, verse?

Give me one, just one demonstrable advantage to believing in one god, just one.
OK. I will. With only one god, you don't have to remember the names of all those other gods. Plus, it is theoretically easier to please one god than a whole bunch of them. Although the Christian god is never pleased. That one is always pissed off.

Love you all. I'm Roman Catholic Christian and I recommend looking into your hearts and seeing certain truths. It is true that you can be happy with yourself and it is true that you can be unhappy with yourself. What is that? There's a stranger within each human soul. Jealousy cannot be measured, but it exists. Same as the undeniability that Pride, Lust, Revenge, Greed, Envy, Sloth and Gluttony are bad. I encourage all of you to philosophize a bit and turn off media. I'm not republican or democrat and there hasn't been anyone worth voting for on television for 20 years. I did vote, just for nobody on the tv. I don't own a tv anyways. Please pray for me and I for you. We do homeless ministry, hospital visits and hospice here in the West. Be a prayer. Start the journey
Catholic..really ? I pray... that you get out of that belief ;) You seem like a decent guy. why do you support a church who supports priest doing evil to children ?
Prayer is wishful thinking. A do nothing approach to sounding like you care. You forget the person the moment you turn your back. Helping the homeless is noble but not coming from you. You have an alterior motive to deliver a soul to your god. Its how you prove your worthiness to him. You swindled someone out of their soul by putting fear into them. Like a knife to the throat.
Duped? Betrayed? Judas? There once lived a man who shared a warning and they made him a god, so that you never come to question their legitimacy.
🩷🧡💛💚💙🩵💜❤️
I just ask that Roman Catholics respect my Protestant religion.
@Monk_Life - Thank you for your comment. Thank you also for the work you do for the homeless, the hospital visits, and the hospice work you do! Those things usually don't make it into headlines or on the nightly national news because they're not as sensational as scandals. I'm a follower of Jesus but I'm not Catholic, but I'll say this without hesitation : many people don't know all the work the Catholic church does for "the least of these" and the help they give in food assistance, paying people's medical bills, helping the homeless, etc, etc.
How can anyone believe in an invisible man in the sky micromanaging everyone’s life?

I grew up in a household where religion was not just present but imposed. Attending church and Sunday school every Sunday was mandatory. Over time, I became aware of the hate, judgement and homophobia that permeated from the church walls.
I was born into Mormonism, have been out of that cult since 2015. Best decision ever and love all of Bills Mormon jokes 🤣
