    Add some floetrol to the water based paint for a better finish.

    Roll on and tip off with wider brush on bigger areas. Faster and less brush marks not having to work the paint to cover with a brush.

    Another few tips to add if that’s ok… a good laying off finish is always achieved when the decorator knows just how much to thin their paints by whether it be oil based or water. Also never start a painting job with a dry brush. Work the paint into the stock well before you start. As you do… few taps on the side of the kettle and the difference in the finish becomes obvious. I like the example with the oil and water and how they behave so different. Never thought of it like that. 👍

    Thanks for taking your time to make these videos. They are fascinating and it's great to see someone go into so much detail about a subject that it could be easy to dismiss.
    One question from me, how do you lay shellac-based paints? They seem to have a watery consistency to me and dry very quickly, so I would assume that you would lay as if using a water based paint.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, you have to work fast with shellac paints. Couple of strokes and move, and don't go back over it.

    Can I ask a daft question please? I’m just a DIYer and have managed to get a fairly flat coat of water based paint with minimal brush strokes by brushing it out much thinner than you show in your video. It does mean putting on more coats though, is there any reason why doing it that way is a bad idea? Thanks.

    Great video, total novice here, but about to start a house project, I hope you will not mind me asking, but when you laid the paint long ways along the grain, you could see lots of brush lines, but when you went left to right (shorter length) the brush lines seemed to disappear on camera and looked lots better when viewing the video.....is that just how the camera made it look? , but if you left it to dry, would the long ways laying off brush lines self level and disappear? I understand the technique, but hard for me as a novice to understand how it will look at the end of the job, would I get a better amateur/novice finish if I laid it off as described in your video and then go over it with a roller?

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you.. yes just a trick of the light.. unfortunately with water based you will always see brush marks.. unless you roll. It does depend on how soft the tips of the brush are.. sometimes pure bristle leave a better finish using water based..

    You mentioned some people dampen down the surface prior to using water based paint. What are your thoughts on this?
    I'm using Dulux quick dry gloss on door frames, and the paint is dragging almost instantly. I'm using a synthetic brush which I have slightly dampened, and am attempting to work quickly as per your advice. My brush seems to be drying out with the fibres sticking together too. The surface has been under coated with no issues and is nicely flat.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can all depend on your paint, how quickly it dries it's self.. cold room, wipe over with damp cloth, pre soak the surface. Which I guess it has to be on undercoat, I've never tried it.. usually close eyes paint fast, only look at it for runs, ignore the finish till it's dry.. then make a judgement to how it looks and your process.. cheers

    • @SootheSound
      @SootheSound ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PaintingandDecorating Thank you. I tried a damp cloth on the other side of the door frame and that helped. I'll try a smaller brush (1" rather than 2"), as the bristles look 'fuller' so hopefully hold more paint. I'll also aim to keep working quick like you suggest, and not expect perfection as with oil based gloss.

      @@PaintingandDecorating Another question, do you have any videos on using Osmo door oil? I've got 6 to do, DIY, and so am thinking using a 2" natural bristle brush, and lying the door flat. The doors have a central glass panel and several horizontal channels machined in as part of the pattern. They are oak veneer.

  • @davelowe1977
    @davelowe1977 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm no pro but my technique is plenty of coats of water based primer undercoat because it dries fast and sands perfect. Then I finish with two coats of oil gloss. I can get a finish like automotive spray paint if I'm careful. Water based gloss as a final finish is no good for the reasons you describe.

    Interesting video..I am just a DIYer so have tried a huge range of paints...While an oil based paint usually goes on so much better, the down side is they tend to yellow...if anybody can recommend an oil based paint that stays white and resists yellowing, I would love to know....
