    Great video mate. I do very similar brush strokes as you,but to keep dust to an absolute minimum I will use a sponge sanding pad soaked in water between coats. I actually use really cheap ones from pound land,and i get a glass like finish every time. The beauty of this method is,that I can actually rub down in a room that I have wet gloss without the worry of dust landing on it. Not that I would recommend doing it as a rule,but if you are desperate to get a job done on the same day,it can be handy.

    Nice video. Never seen someone put oil brushes in water overnight rather than spirits. you learn something every day. You recommend oil based paints that would work well in windows with light, but I find whites yellow too much when not exposed to sunlight. I am trying to get perfect finishes on internal cupboard doors etc so opt for water (or acetone) based paints. I use rollers instead of brushes as don't have a gun. What would you use for a flat cupboard door - brush or roller?

    Thanks for a brilliant video. I've always sealed my brushes in airtight plastic bags in the past, wrapping them very tightly and securing them with an elastic band, and just overnight, but this has been for emulsion or water based eggshell or matt woodwork. Do you think I would be able to use the same for oil based gloss. I've got so many cabinet fronts to do that I want to keep things as simple as possible, but don't want to compromise the quality of the finish. Many thanks

    • @timothyarnold777
      @timothyarnold777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Putting your emulsion brushes in plastic bags overnight is fine but I wouldn't risk it with glossing brushes. You have to train a good glossing brush which makes it too valuable to risk in plastic bag overnight. If it dries out you will have to spend loads of time getting it usable again. Put your brush in water overnight or clean it thoroughly after use.

    we do water based emulsion on log cabins. im expected to do 2 spray coats (im not a pro decorator but this job is within my capabilities). the spray coats look great but what ive found is that if i do a brush coat inbetween the final spray coat looks mint. not only that but i know ive got 100% coverage. the main contractor often makes remarks about how long it takes me to do them, he never says anything about the finish though so i know its right. im hoping to pick up some oil based skills so i can take on more variety. ive learnt a bit here though thanks for your time fella!

    Why not prime with acrylic primer undercoat?

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could use acrylic primer undercoat but it does not seal as good as B.I.N. or oil undercoat. And you will never get as good as finish using water based paints.

    • @m1k300003
      @m1k300003 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Painting and Decorating with 2 acrylic primer, an oil undercoat and an oil gloss it would look just as good in my opinion. Plus water base paints are more eco friendly and convenient when it comes to washing up.
      Zinsser is very good stuff but I only use to kills stains as it decreases your brush life by half even when cleaning thoroughly.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@m1k300003 It does not decrease brush life, we keep brushes in a container with a small amount of methylated spirit. And depending what you're doing it dries really fast and speeds up jobs. But I agree you can use acrylic, and we do use it at times. It all depends on what you're painting and time scale.

The main colour for the doors was a lovely, rich dark green and some of them were finished to such a high degree that they were glass like, like the door of the WEF prime minister, at no.10.
    I seem to remember being told that they finish off by using T-Cut and a lacquer finish to get this glass-like shine..

      It depends a lot on natural light and heat, areas with no natural light your better using water based. But if your room has a lot of natural light this seams to help oil paint stay more white. Also oil has changed over the years and I think they have made progress a little. They had major problems at one point oil paint yellowing really bad within a month.

    Using a brushmate would be easier for your brushes though and then you can use different brushes for undercoat and gloss and just store them in the box.

    Can you show the technique for avoiding runs on vertical surfaces using oil based paints, as water based dries quicker so it's easier for beginners less chance for runs. Thanks

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes no problem will make a video. And you still have to be careful with water based as you can get build up in certain areas of application that run, and are a lot harder to touch up when noticed as water based flashes as soon as you look at it. Oil based paint is better to work with also dries at a lower temp and is on a whole different level to water based... shame it can yellow.

    I would use a bigger brush,cross lay it off after coating the whole panel and use a tack rag in between coats after sanding,also I was taught to use one side of the paint kettle so you can put your brush on it without getting paint on the handle of the brush.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You only need to use a tack rag on last coat really as the sanding denibs but doing a window sill no call for it. Also that kettle has been used hundreds of times and needs burning out. And on that small board a 2" brush is perfect size

    whats the best type of brush for liquid gloss? hair type/count etc. i'm a panel beater/auto sprayer by trade so i don't do alot of house painting but i'm changing my front door for a new wooden one.
    btw have dulux changed the colour formula for 'goldcup' in the liquid range in the last 10-20 years one i had mixed as goldcup from a dulux supplier is a good few shades into the orange rather than yellow (currently looking into that info from dulux).
    new door is in the 'carolina' style so its got a few thin bars, after primering it a few times i'm thinking i'll paint all the big flat areas first then go in with the smaller brush to do the fiddly bars, i found doing it the other way the smaller bits get over painted.
    which way around would you go? (gonna check out your vids see if you already did that, only just found you)
    uk based

    Thanks for the video - excellent demo. I used to use Dulux oil based to get a lovely gloss finish but, sadly, I find that the white goes yellow especially where it doesn't get much sun. I now use Zinsser Perma-White satin. It's expensive, not as easy to apply as oil based and obviously satin not gloss but overall I prefer it as it doesn't yellow.

    Hello...... Zinsser is great stuff but it is shellac which is its own animal altogether...... and is thinned with alcohol/alcohol based and you can get a mirror finish with a brush with water based paints by adding penetrol to the paint..... aka Flood.

    This is how to do it primer undercoat and gloss not one coat business if you want a good finish it takes time and effort. Good job I have managed to get a piano finish using shop gloss paint by using the appropriate steps instead of using one coat paints. Also the paint you get in the diy stores is not easy to work with either it’s poor.
