I concur. Best explanation and demonstration I've seen. The demo at the start of the video of how not to do it is exactly how I've been doing it for years and getting disappointing results as shown. Thanks for sharing your experience 😊
About 30 years ago I painted an accent wall in a dark green, and it looked terrible. There were paint lines and reflectivity differences everywhere. So I painted it again. Same problem. On the third try I did just a part of the wall, and it looked just as bad, so I gave up and hired a professional painter. I went to work that day, and when I came home, the wall was absolutely perfect. Not a roller or brush mark anywhere, and the light reflected the same in all directions. It had to be magic! On that day I gained a huge and lasting respect for professional painters, and I've hired several since then to do whole rooms and large jobs in the houses I've lived in and in my rental properties. It is truly an art!
I’ve been painting for many years and it give us a statisfactory feeling watching the process of it take place and especially when it’s all done and clean. I enjoy what I do
Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorial. Yesterday I painted my hallway wall - the wrong way! So frustrating. After watching your lesson I will go for it again today like a pro. Much appreciated.
Since the last painter I hired was a thief, I said, what the hell, he said he painted the living room in 15 min with 18" roller, I bought and he took with him. Took me, as a first timer 25 min, but I had a lot more stuff in the room, two stoves and fridge, his room was empty !.... I learned tips from the Idaho painter video and now, this video, which is also valuable. I took notes on 6 areas I can improve on, like finish downward, don't load and hit the corner first, let the roller roll, and the thing I struggle with the most, consistency ! Thank you Spencer. I did the main rooms of the apartment in one hour ! I have paid 700-900 USD for labor a similar job. There is still more work to do, but I am very excited about doing more, getting better and getting faster.
I use Purdy, 3/8 nap, 18" roller and the 18" roller tray. I listen to the sound of the paint going on, but I can usually paint about 4 feet of a wall with one loading of the roller.
Thank you for this! I was starting to become demoralized! I've tried several techniques for rolling on some dark green paint in my bathroom, with each time getting closer to streak free, but still not there yet! I see some of the errors of my ways now and I think I'll now be able to solve my painting problems!!!
Best explanation I've found on TH-cam on proper painting technique. I had a nightmare painting a dark colour in one of my rooms, dried with so many streaks. Used the method in this video on another room and the finish came out perfect.
great tips, don't be tempted as the roller runs low on paint to push harder...you'll just squish paint out of the ends...steady pressure always...and don't cut in the whole room, just a section at a time so you are going over wet paint !
Bravo Spencer. Excellent tutoring, and execution. Details, details, details I use 6""whizroll after cutting .My maximum cut range is about 2 ft at a time . 👍👏🎖🎖🙋♂️
Very good video. I wonder if you need to do sanding on the wall after the 1st coat? Or can you use the technique shown in this video whitout any sanding before the 2nd coat? I want to get rid of the roller marks shown on my wall after 2 coats, and wonder if it will help to do sanding before the 3rd coat.
Good video. Do you cut all around, bottom, top, both sides of a wall, all in one go before applying the coat? Do you let the cut dry before putting on the coat?
When I was painting I used an 18 inch roller whenever possible. My technique was very similar, I would start in the middle of the wall and go all the way to the ceiling and all the way to the floor four times. I would reapply paint to the roller and start my next line and overlap about two to three inches and go up and down four times. Rinse and repeat and you would NEVER see a roller mark in any of my work.
Excellent video, very helpful. The roller I use whilst being 9 inch wide has a plastic paint shield underneath it and consequently the pole fixes to it in the niddle of the paint shield. Is this device OK or would you recomend I change it to the type you are using in the video?
Nice camerawork to catch the unevenness of the paint at the start of the video! Why don't you spray? And is sanding the only remedy for getting rid of marks on previously painted walls? Thanks.
You have heard the saying when using a hand saw, let the weight of the saw do the work. The same is true for a paint roller. It takes skill and practice to master this but you will never leave a roller track again.
Wish I saw this video before I started my second coat with Behr Dynasty paints...I have a horrendous mess from my patch-up work because I was using up my leftover paint and applied it like an artist would to a painting, just like your first example. It's very hard as an artist to remember that wall painting is not the same as doing canvas painting, especially with the ingredients and gloss type being involved heavily in the final product of a DIY job. 😅
I think my only question is how do you handle the final column. Do you just plan so that you don’t need to get more paint for that one since there’s no place to put the excess paint?
I've been painting my own house for a while now, been zig zagging like others show in their videos and I always end up with lines and Vs on the wall with darker shades, especially. One question though. Should the paint be diluted to get this result that you've painted on or it should be used right out of the bucket and not diluted at all. Paint shops in our area recommend we dilute it a bit, but I'm skeptical. Your knowledge/advice on this matter would be great. Thanks for the education.
@@spencercolgan Thanks for your prompt reply. I got another question, after I did the cutin and apply the roller horizontally, then vertically, when the paint is dry, i can see the top has a stripe, how do i fix this?
When applying your first coat (or mist coat), would it be acceptable to go in any direction just to get paint on the wall? Following up with the correct procedure on the second coat.
Strictly speaking, it doesn’t matter too much, unless you’re heavy-handed; however, you should go in the same direction on the first coat as the second, so that you don’t make ridges sideways and horizontally; it is a natural to repeat in anyway other than vertically, and therefore you will likely causes ridges
This looks like a high end job.. Spencer I was wondering your thoughts and potential video on the subject of wall finishing. I have a lot of “decorator friends” who scoff at me for - slightly thinning down thick gloopy paint, straining it, and applying it with medium or thin nap rollers. Especially for the finish coat. These are non negotiable things on high end finish jobs in my opinion and can’t see how anyone wouldn’t do that. Apparently painting thick contaminated paint with long nap rollers straight on to prepped walls is the professional way 🤦♂️🤦♂️ please help Spencer tell me I’m not crazy
I'm always surprised by how much paint can be applied in one roll. If I have the roller so wet that i can do even one full roll top to bottom, then it's dripping with paint. This guy is doing two or more rolls, and there is consistent uniform paint application. Is it better paint, better rollers??
After painting my sons bedroom and getting lines watching this im off back to re paint 😂 ive never had the problem before but using the same technique every time
I get your advice, but you didn’t show the long wall results from the wall you painted in the video. You showed the same finished wall from the start. Like how do we know it works?
It's like watching paint dry😁 however very good tips and somewhat common sense. Buy good quality paint that won't splatter and will cover in one coat if the previous paint is a light color. The long handle certainly reduces stress on your arms and you can get better pressure.
I must have watched over 20 videos on this topic this one is easily the best. Precise, clear, to the point.
I concur. Best explanation and demonstration I've seen. The demo at the start of the video of how not to do it is exactly how I've been doing it for years and getting disappointing results as shown. Thanks for sharing your experience 😊
Exactly this!!
Hi guys, how should i apply tgat method on cieling rather than a wall?
Truly a master of his art! Definitely one of the best Christopher Walken impressions I've seen!

Thank you Spencer!!!!
I painted white on white and was super angry because of banding. After watching like a million videos this had the best explanation! Thank you!
Surprisingly each time I watch one of your videos i come away with some golden nugget of information. Thx again 👍

Thank you Christopher Walken, for this excellent tutorial !
3 stages to applying finishes. 1. get the liquid on the wall. 2. spread it out evenly . 3. make it pretty. Always remember what stage you are on.
You’ve literally saved my decorating disaster and stopped my war being chewed off by wife 😂 thank you thank you thank you!!!!!
👂🏻
Life saver, extremely good tutorial for a very frustrating issue, thank you very much!
I like the way he explains every detail. Very good video.

2 feet vertically or horizontally?
This is brilliant! Watching this video makes sense of everything. Thank you so much!!
great video, I rolled my ceiling with this method and it came out beautifully! Thank you
So glad to hear!!!
Thank you for this awesome video. I was really struggling to paint my wall. It was all patchy. You have shown exactly how to fix it.

Very helpful, thank you! Do you do the horizontal roller cutting on the bottom of the wall or just the top?
Good video. Do you cut all around, bottom, top, both sides of a wall, all in one go before applying the coat? Do you let the cut dry before putting on the coat?
I'd like an answer too
A good rule of thumb I use is to cut in a wall, roll it, then cut in the next wall, roll it… That way you are rolling into a wet edge.
Thank you good sir for sharing both your knowledge and wisdom!!

Great Video thanks dear...what type and size of rollers is ideal for the job?
your instructions are very clear!!!
Excellent job Spence, awesome video.I learn a lot

Nice camerawork to catch the unevenness of the paint at the start of the video! Why don't you spray? And is sanding the only remedy for getting rid of marks on previously painted walls? Thanks.
Should comment on roller as especially in Tampa with textured walls the roller sleeve used makes a big difference.
You have heard the saying when using a hand saw, let the weight of the saw do the work. The same is true for a paint roller. It takes skill and practice to master this but you will never leave a roller track again.
Thanks for great explanation! I wished you had the camera not that close to the wall so got the wall from top to the bottom.
Best video covering this. Thank you.
Would you still roll up & down on shorter walls with windows (like on a porch?)
Thank you soooo much. I was finally able to paint my walls and save some money. ❤

Matte finish emerald. Sherwin Williams. Usa

What kind of roller did you use? What's the nap thickness?

Great job!
What is the name of that black paint? its absolutely gorgeous!
Great video, just wonder do you need to sand the wall in between the coats?
Do not sand the wall in between… You will undoubtedly tear the newly applied first coat
@@spencercolgan Thanks for your prompt reply. I got another question, after I did the cutin and apply the roller horizontally, then vertically, when the paint is dry, i can see the top has a stripe, how do i fix this?
Great video thank you. Can at a good time as I'm just about to finish my office.
After you go down each time, do you remove the roller from the wall?

Hey Spencer - have you tried a Sherlock pole & roller cage? These were a game changer for me yrs ago. Good vid for those new to the painting game.
Oof I made pretty much all of these mistakes and need to redo it. Thanks for the vid.
If I want my ceiling to be the same color as the walls, can I use the same kind of paint?

You are NOT crazy. You sound like the consummate professional
Beautiful, thank you very much.
Do you start with a wet boarder
I was thinking the same question
Thanks for the guide. I will start with my bathroom.
This is right. Always use a quality sleeve but don’t apply too much pressure or you will create edges of paint and crush the nap of the roller.
Great work
Greatly appreciate this.
Thanks for sharing this...

Same it's either dripping or only covers half a column
How much paint was used? Seems like it may take a lot more paint than using a brush.
Hi, is this paint diluted at all?
Thanks for the teaching
really helpful. thank you
so how do we fix this problem
After painting my sons bedroom and getting lines watching this im off back to re paint 😂 ive never had the problem before but using the same technique every time
It worked perfectly and just finished my daughters room which again is another re plastered room which as worked great
Why is it with some paint you are lucky to get two complete runs on a wall with 3/8” roller?
Cheap paint?
Too much pressure?
Thank you so much for this
If I've already banded badly do I have to sand ?
@@michaellieberman6760 no. Let it dry very well
This is very helpful 🙏
I get your advice, but you didn’t show the long wall results from the wall you painted in the video. You showed the same finished wall from the start. Like how do we know it works?
Thank you sir
Great points!… very appre🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍
Thank you. Genius🎉🎉🎉🎉
Good video🎉
Thanks for the visit
Id like to add that this is for paints with sheen. Flat paint is much more forgiving, and you dont need to be this careful
Thank you
Thanks!
Can i work with you am a painter from Nigeria
Painting stucco with a roller is much easier and more forgiving than interior drywall.
Me 2 minutes into the video knowing damn well this is exactly how I painted my ceiling 2 days ago, auughhhh
Someone had an accident 🤣 12:18

When you're cutting top just take a rad roller then you won't have to go up twice.

No need to get on a ladder. You have a roller on a stick. Just roll the wall.
pleased come & do my decorating ☹️
How to to make an easy job complicated.
