How to clean a cat wood pellet litter box

  • Many people don't realize that clay cat litter is poisonous to cats -- the fine dust can lodge in their lungs and digestive system from paw licking and grooming. In contact with moisture, the dust can clog their little bodies and there is a real possibility of them losing their lives. Wood pellets are safer and natural as well as easy to clean and in expensive to use.

    Omg this video is all WRONG never ever use lysol, bleach or detergent around an animal like this!!! I was cringing this whole video! Cats do not need 100% clean litterboxes they like to keep their scent within the box to a point. If you can't handle having a litter box that isn't perfectly chemically sanitized 100% of the time then don't have a cat! Your poor cats are constantly being exposed/breathing in harmful toxic fumes!!

I'm 3 weeks in and I'll never go back to clay litter. Both mine and my roommate's cats took to it without skipping a beat. I dump it all in a trash can with My kitchen scraps and paper, like junk mail, etc. The garbage can has holes all over it for aeration, and I keep the contents slightly damp. • @emma4628
      @emma4628 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a month-old comment, but you're right. There's something wrong with this person. I recently switched my cat over to the Tractor Supply Co. pine pellets - we're in the transitional phase between the old problematic clay litter and the new sifting box, with my cat just using pine pellets in her old box without any extra stuff around to cause stress - and the pine pellets actually smell amazingly nice. Even the peed-on sawdust smells nice, like freshly-cut lumber. The last time I dumped the pine litter, I wiped the box out with 2 damp paper towels & ended up with a completely clean box. This video is weird & creepy and seems like borderline animal abuse. If you're thinking about going for the pine pellets litter for your own cats, btw, I wouldn't hesitate. It was my second-best idea ever (after adopting a cat, of course). Good luck, and don't let this idiot deter you!

    A 13-1/4" stackable classifier gold prospecting pan with 1/4" mesh on top of a 5 gallon bucket with compost, or trash bag inside works better. I scoop the poop using a Litter Lifter pellet scoop and flush. Then using a dry food scoop, I scoop the pellets into the pan, stir and shake until only pellets remain, pick up the pan, and dump the remaining pellets back into the litter box. As the classifier pan is larger, and has walls, you can sift more pellets, and shake the pan more vigorously.

    I agree on the comments regarding the cleaning agents used....however, after watching about a dozen "simple" litter box videos, I find hers the MOST simple and MOST easy and LEAST time consuming. Please tell me how that is a different process from the scoopable litter that we use(d) before finding the pellet style. Living in an apt, I don't have the option to spread the sawdust around the yard so I use plastic bags anyway to toss into the dumpsters.
    If you're going to make the switch to pellets, rather than buying 3-4 litter pans/storage bins I find her "tip and scoop" into a grocery bag much easier -- and CHEAPER, plus no measuring -- drilling -- pouring -- sifting -- shaking -- finding a yard plant to pour the ammonia waste around (why would you do that, any more than you would spray it into the litter box? It will eventually kill the plants or grass!!!) Both methods (solid waste in plastic bags, and ammonia/bleach on grass and soil) are as destructive to the environment as exposing animals to carcinogins in cleaning agents.

    I use pine pellets too but not bleach and stuff that's bad could make the cat sick just scoop the poop everyday and sift the sawdust every other day bam it's clean if they get any poo on the side of the box use an unscented baby wipe or wet rag with just water

      Hardwood pellets are better, because softwood pellets may contain oils that are harmful to the kitten/cat. I don't remember what type of oils specifically, but that should get you on the right track for when you research it more. :)

    Now once a week a may use bleach in spots but I don't anymore after today bc the kittens can't wait long enough for the scent to air out. So it's back to spot cleaning with baby wipes. Also last I bleached the litter box it was after one months use and was rinsed very well and allowed to dry so no chemicals. I'm still using clay waiting for the delivery of pine litter. Got a mama cat and her 2 babies (6wks). Trying to find a better solution in case they stay here forever. Which mom and little boy will. Gonna try and adopt out the girl after she is spayed. Mom is getting spayed as well.

    I'm waiting for a pellet scoop that has a (sliding / flip) cover that you can engage when shaking the pellets to remove the sawdust more efficiently. Until then, shaking half a scoop at a time, and spilling a few pellets out the top and sides.

    🎉buy 3 restaurant bins ($5 apiece). Cut the bottom out of one and sew plastic mesh in it’s place using fishing line (using either a drill or soldering iron to make holes). I got the mesh from Home Depot where it is used to separate concrete blocks. They throw it out anyway. (take scissors or a utility knife to cut it). I first did this with 1/4” metal mesh and rivets, but the mesh eventually rusted out. For the plastic mesh I left several support strips on the bottom of the bin as I cut it out. I have only been using this version for a short time so I will see how it Hol’s up..

    Great idea but not keen on the chemicals to clean it. Much safer to remove the pellets, clean and dry properly without the stuff coming into contact with the pellets that the cat will smell and possibly cause some harm to their respiratory system.

    i use lemon juice instead of bleach is that okay???

    • @xanadu1jw
      @xanadu1jw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that is much better than the dangerous fumes that the bleach emits even before it gets mixed with the ammonia fumes from the used litter which will slowly kill you and the cat. But vinegar or hydrogen peroxide (don't leave the surface wet with peroxide as it is a mild bleach on the skin but fine when dried up) would be cheaper and not harmful to the cat whereas lemon juice has just a touch of limonene which may not be entirely good for the cat.

    why the bleach and lysol? just scoop it once a day! stays fresh! plain dish soap and hot water maybe once in a while, perhaps. w/ healthy animals organisms should not be a threat! on the farm its the same each day. muck it out and add the fresh & dry! A+

      You're gunna put on gloves every single day to do this, when you're holding a scoop anyway... you're not even touching the poop... and you wash your hands right after. Thats would be a waste of gloves.
      As someone else said... would you put on gloves every time you changed a babys diaper? I guess if you're afraid of germs... and again if you don't plan on washing your hands

      The first day I felt it was weak at controlling odors, but as the pellets disintegrate it becomes more effective. I'm sticking with it. I started with mixing some litter that my older cat is familiar with, not to go cold turkey on her after all these years. She adapted well.

    Where did you get your sifter shovel?

  • @pathworktarot
    @pathworktarot 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You need a sifting box to separate the sawdust and a scoop for the poop. This is not the right way to do this. lol. Get a sifting box, raise it a little the regular box on the bottom and put the sifting box with the grates on the top, you need a little space maybe an in to separate, the two boxes, you can use an inverted ice cube tray. This will leave room for the sawdust to fall as you shake the sifting box, or use a litter scoop to run across the grate, if you don't want to lift the sifter and shake.
