    I found a cat in my yard about 6 years ago. She was so weak she could barely walk a couple steps before sitting down or falling over. I went over and pick her up and she was skin and bones. She was starving to death, she might have lasted one more day. I started feeding her everyday even though she was a little skittish. Within a week she was running around full of energy and was putting on weight. Within a couple months she felt more comfortable with me and actually came in the house. I named her Kiwi, because she was so sweet. I set her up a litter box and she has never used it. When she has to go to the bathroom she will come up to me and meow and go towards the door, I let her out she goes to the bathroom and then comes right back. She's never used a litter box in her whole life and never had an potty accident in the house. Now we are best friends and she sleeps with me every night.

    My beloved black cat is 16.5 years old and has little time left. He has advanced liver cancer. He recently started pooping in the house. I purchased a litter tray which broke as soon as I picked it up after putting sand like litter in it. So I resorted to one of those plastic drawers. Much larger, low sides he can easily get into. He happily pees in the box but no to pooping in it. I did put one of his turds in, but nope. Today he went outside to poop but still pees in the litter box. It’s a difficult chore for me to clean up after him as I have had surgery on my arm and are effectively one handed. However, he is sick and after 16.5 years of loves and purrs it’s not going to be for much longer. I do not growl at him as he doesn’t deserve that and if he has the energy to go outside he will. If not, well! Price of having a beautiful cat that I love dearly.

      This is a good video. I’m so glad you mentioned not using a scented litter. I can’t imagine a poor cat having to put up with the smell.
      Also, it’s great that you discourage using a covered box and not training a cat to use the toilet. Such great information. I always thought that doing that is something a lazy person does to their cat, so that they don’t have to deal with a litter box.
      The only thing that is odd is that after saying that a cat needs a large box,several of the photos/ video clips show a cat in a small box. Otherwise, great tips. I would also add: Keep your cat inside.

    Enjoyed the video. There are several instances in which these don’t apply to every cat; one example is having a cat that urinates straight out behind versus down like most. Having a low wall litter box is a sure way to end up with urine on your walls or anything else that may be near her litter box. This is of no fault of the cat, or course, it’s simply something that some are born with. This applies to both males and females. I have a sweet cat that urinates straight behind herself so having a HIGH wall box is a must. If fact her box is a top entry with no holes on the sides! Just wanted to share. 😊🐾💗

Both have been neutered at the age of 6 months. I think he saw other cats outside doing it and decided he needs to do the same. We had to go and buy high wall litter boxes. They are helping protect each other. Cats understand that while pooping they are vulnerable. This is also why many cats insist on being allowed into the bathroom when their humans are using it. They want to protect us by standing guard so we don't literally get caught with our pants down.

    Problem about the litter box with the low side for them to walk in. We adopted a 5 year old and got a litter box like that. Always found pee on the floor by the low side. The best litter box I've found is a black cement mixing tray. They can be found at any home center store. They cost far less than an actual litter box, are large enough for almost all domestic cats. It has gently curved ends so cleaning is a breeze and the top edges are rounded making it more comfortable for the cat to enter and exit. If you have the space, get one. You'll never use a regular litter box again!

      @@luashelton9320 Thanks! They are extremely tough! They are roughly 19" wide by 25" long by 6.5" high so little kittens may need a small step to get in, and it will require at least three quarters of a large bucket/box of litter to fill the first time. That's if you use a standard high quality clumping litter. I use Tidy Cats lightweight litter that comes in a 19.5lb box and it's equal to 42lbs of regular clay litter. In other words, it holds a lot of litter!

    There is something we did when our Miss Teia of fond memory (06/1997 - 11/2018) was about 16 and it was difficult for her to get in a litter box. I made up a tray of heavy duty PVC sheeting and placed extra large dog pee pads in it. I put a bit of soiled litter in the middle to catch her nose. She took to using those almost right away, used them until her kidneys failed and we had to take her for the last vet visit.

    As someone who has an extremely tiny bathroom (the only room it works in, I have carpet everywhere) I have to have an enclosed litter box. I used an opened one and everyday I was sweeping up a huge amount of litter, like a good cup or so, everyday! I couldn't walk in without walking all over the litter, it was gross and unhygienic. She doesn't understand she doesn't have to take the other half of the litter to cover her business, it's ridiculous how much she flings it. I use pretty litter and she loves it, when she has fresh litter she literally plays in it, til she uses it then she stops. She has no issues using the litter box.

    always keep it clean, fill it with lots of litter 'cause they like it thick, buy the biggest toilet you can even if you have one cat, remove that stupid flappy thing immediately after buying (but, not the whole cover, just that flap), place it in your own bathroom. and, if you have multiple cats have multiple toilets.
    it's so funny because when i wake up in the morning i first go to the bathroom and my cats do the same 😅 they get up, go into their toilets and do their business as i am doing mine. cats are great companions.

    Speaking from personal experience, if you have a male cat, PAY ATTENTION to how often he pees. Male cats are susceptible to a condition called FLUTD. If untreated, this is 100% fatal to the poor cat. It is caused by stress and dietary issues, which will cause blockages in the urethra making it very difficult, and eventually impossible for the cat to pee. At some point, his bladder will burst open and he will die. This almost happened to my cat last year, and I keep a close eye on the litter box. A small tip, that if your cat is shy or doesn't like people being around when he does his business, is get a camera and set it up, and have it set to only record when it detects movement. That way you can pull up your phone and easily keep track of when's the last time your cat did his business. I do this with mine, and ever since I made changes to the home and his life to improve his health, he's not had much of any problems. Scared me a couple times by waiting some 20 hours to pee, but that was more separation anxiety which I can't control as I live alone and work. But he normally does his 2 pees and 1 poop per day, at similar times every day, and I keep checking to make sure it stays like this.

      @redwitch12 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      On one occasion, my older male cat cried when he was trying to urinate and nothing came out. I got him to the vet right away, and they were able to get a catheter into his bladder to check for problems; just the passage of the catheter was enough to disturb the crystals that were blocking his urethra, and he proceeded to widdle vigorously on his own after the cath line was out. Ever since, he's gotten about a 1.5 oz serving of wet food twice daily, and I mix in about a tablespoonful of extra water to make sure he's getting good hydration. Dry food is all well and good, but they're really not geared to feel thirst like we do because they're supposed to get most of their hydration from prey animals and the like.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@redwitch12 Another thing you should do is get a water fountain. Cats prefer running water to standing water, and he will be more likely to drink from it. I did this with mine and he drinks from it regularly.
      Also, if your vet was anything like mine, they should have given him a prescription diet (Hills to Home). It's somewhat pricey but my cat is absolutely in love with the prescription food, way moreso than the slop they sell on store shelves.
      I feed my cat 1/4th of a can of wet food per day around 7PM and the rest, he eats dry food and he's been fine. Also, if you ever get worried about your cat's peeing, ask your vet for some UTI+ drops. It's a homeopathic medicine that you can add to water and then use a syringe to give it to your cat, it's easy to do and it helps with that.
      EDIT: Also, the first time (it happened twice within a couple weeks) I took him to the vet, they told me they got *300 mL* out of him and that's not counting the little bits that were leaking out while he was in the carrier while I waited for the vet to see him.

    • @redwitch12
      @redwitch12 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Dhalin I had a fountain for them, but they didn't seem to care much for it; they also kept dipping their paws in the water and licking them off, which put all kinds of crud into the fountain and either blocked it up or bred biofilm like crazy, so it was a serious pain to try to keep clean. They're fortunately quite happy with a bowl.
      I did have to put that same cat on a prescription dry diet later on, since chronic kidney disease reared its ugly head when he turned about 14; he's 17 now. I've also been giving him subcutaneous fluids once a day at the vet's direction, as well as keeping up with the wet food.

      You might need to take your kittens to the vet because it sounds like they have worms if you’re having to clean three large litter boxes that often.
      I have two kittens and they were blowing up my three litter boxes also. The older kitten has already been to the vet and got his shots and wormer. The new kitten was growing excessively sideways (fat like a bowling ball) and had diarrhea very bad and was having accidents all over the house.
      It took her two vet visits to overcome the diarrhea because somehow she got reinfected with worms after the first visit but the wormer given first was just a single dose. The second time I got an actual prescription that took two weeks twice a day and she stopped having diarrhea within two days.
      The amount of 💩 I was taking out every day was about a one pound coffee can size but after getting the diarrhea under control that was cut in half and so was so much kitty litter because she was dehydrated from the diarrhea that she was drinking much more water then my adult cat.

    My poor Nile suffered from inflammatory bowel disease and no matter how much scooping, scrubbing surrounding surfaces, changing litter, and giving him medication, the minute I entered the home, I smelled foul feces odor. He was also comically flatulent in his sleep and when he walked-but wow! What a stench.
    I had to resort to covered boxes to contain his aiming diarrhea accidents but nothing helped the odor…though it decreased when he went into remission RIP.
    There are some uses for those covered boxes…but after his death I removed them for my remaining cat.

    I enjoyed the video, mostly. I absolutely can't relate to the fact that open litter boxes are to prefer. I had open ones first. But it ended up with both cats finding other places, with more "privacy". The boxes were placed in an area where barely someone went, but very easily accessible, and if going at same time, they couldn't see each other. They both went into hiding places for doing their business. After trying different litters and different places for the box I went to buy a closed one with a sving door Infront (the biggest one available) from the same day on, both started solely using the closed one. And so far, a year later, they are still happy to use the same one, so until now I haven't even bought a second one.

    I line my cats' litter trays with puppy training pads. The litter they like most sets like concrete on a plastic litter tray, but clumps and can be removed easily. I buy cheap pads, but they still do the job. Plastic liners are useless. The one thing I will look into is a tray with a high back wall as one of my boys likes to pee standing up and is forever hitting the wall, it's not intentional, so a high backed litter tray might help.

    I bought a Rubbermaid 35 gallon tote with lid, used a tile knife to cut a large front opening leaving the bottom access about 5” up from the bottom glue into place a 6” high stake in each corner and placed the lid on top of the stakes. The box will hold about 20 lbs of liter and just add more as necessary and have had not to replace the overall content for over 5 years. This idea has saved me the ridiculous cost of litter boxes and is by far more useful is much better unit.

    We have 5 cats. Having a very large box with 3 high sides is very helpful, ( solved the problem of one cat pooping outside the box in 1 day !), using Dr Elsey’s touch of outdoors litter ( great odor control w/o heavy scent, strong clumping, no dust or tracking) and having lots of boxes have all been essential. We also have wood pellet boxes, but the favorite box of all the cats is the litter robot filled with Dr Elsey’s Touch of Outdoors litter.

    Cats tend to feel safe when hidden, so I'd have thought at least some would like an enclosed litter box. A flap might make it hard for them to feel safe leaving though, and it might concentrate the smell for them and discourage them from using it if it hasn't been cleaned since they last used it though.

    I took responsibility for a cat who stopped by to say hello one day. I found her owner but after an accident that dislocated one of her knuckles, the owner disowned the poor cat.
    She so doesn’t have to worry about anything now, I have adopted her, had her chipped and I have insurance to cover any medical issues.
    She has a litter box and she watches me as I clear it. I always tell her what a good girl she is and while it is unpleasant, I can monitor her urine and stools so that can inform the vet if they happen to ask.
    I think most people don’t realise the responsibility they have to adopt for any pet. It’s certainly true for her original owner. As soon as a vet bill presented itself, that owner cut all ties.

Four jumbo size litter boxes, two of which are 40 gallon high-sided livestock water tubs of a particular brand called Tough Stuff, sold by Tractor Supply. This one has a wide, flat rim that cats can hop up on easily. A non-brittle , black plastic tub that is often bought for aquatic/fish pools and plants. Cats adore their big litter boxes! They make litter boxes for people not cats. Just like fishing lures. The best box is one of those low, flat storage boxes that slide inder the bed. They come in several lengths and can be perfectly sized for your cat. Just ditch the lid. Yes, cats will kickout some litter. That's the cost of living with a cat. You can get any number of rubber or vinyl matts with edges that curve up a bit to help keep it in a spot that's easy to sweep - daily.

    For the past 30 days I have experimented with having only one box between 2 cats. My male often pees horizontally, hitting the wall, so I have to have one high side. The female scoots her butt to the far end of the box, and while she is in the box, the poop ends up outside the box, and she covers it with the rug that catches paw litter. The 2 boxes were seperated by litter products, creating a "blind" between the two boxes. Nothing worked until I removed the wider, lower walled box, and started using just one box.
    By pushing the one box up against the wall (high side to wall) that only left one end for the female to poop over, and so far she has not. (I also physically move her when I see her butt hanging over the side). The box is next to the patio door where they come and go, and is also within eye sight of my desk. I clean their boxes every morning and every night, still do BUT
    only have one box is fine. I am using half the litter. It is also easier for me to washout the box with soap and water once a week. Having two boxes made than entire area a "toilet zone" and by reducing the size of the zone, I have a lot less to clean up every day now.

When we clean it, she'll sit and watch and as soon as it's done she'll go in and leave one tiny present. It's hard to find unscented, non clumping litter, that's what she likes best. The alternative litters are very expensive. I wish we could use a litter that doesn't require being dug out of the ground but it's the most affordable.

    This is all true, but I noticed that some cats would prefer more litter in their boxes , but some will be better with smaller amounts. Cleaning the box regularly is the most important thing, cats are very organized and clean animals.

    About the covered litter box:my cat use it as a bed and sleep in😂, so I take it off....and get the classic one, much better. The one bathroom is for all in the family including my to cats, so the litter box is in the shower and they start to use it since they came in my house. About to have 2 litter box? I try to but where one go, the other follow😂, so I take off the second one.Good luck to all cats and owners.

    I have 4 cats. I have 6 litter boxes. 4 are large like in the video. 2 are small. I rescued them 2 at a time as kittens. I had the 2 small ones for them to use as kittens. 3 of them use the 4 big boxes. I have a beautiful part berman who uses the 2 small ones. He has to bow up to use them as he is now 12 lbs and a pretty good size cat and not fat. He is also the gentlest cat I have ever had. The only thing I can figure is he so unaggressive. He doesn't feel comfortable using the big ones with the other cats. They all play together and do not fight.
