How to switch from cat clay litter to pine pellets.

  • This video gives you information on how to transition from clay litter to pine pellets.
A few reasons why I switched:
    100% biodegradable
    Less tracking
    Less dust
Clay litter, if ingested, could cause a blockage.
You are able to recognize if your kitty is sick by seeing their stool.
The pellets' high absorbency helps with the order.
THE COST!!! You will save money while saving the environment.
Thank you, mom, for helping me with my video.

I transitioned both my ragdolls (male and female) from clay to pine pellets in 3 days. I had read someone's blog post where they mentioned cats were very clean creatures so if you left their old litter box dirty (no new litter, no cleaning out the clumps) they'd stop using it. So I took their old litter box and stopped cleaning it while leaving the new pine pellet litter box right next to the old one. They would stick their heads into the old litter box and then walk away, come back to the new litter box, stick their heads into the opening and sniff the pine pellets but go back to the old box and go into the old one to do their business. This went on a few times throughout the 3 days until my female decided she didn't want to use the old box and jumped into the new one. When my male saw her, he followed her lead and jumped in afterwards. They used the new box for the rest of the day but I kept an eye on the old box and once I saw that there were no more attempts at using that old box, I removed it. So much easier than trying to use both types of litter and helped me avoid the mess. Thank you for showing us how you repurposed your existing boxes. This has given me some great ideas on how to do the same with mine.

For anyone who is transitioning cats from traditional clay litter to pine pellets, here is a tip to make the transition much easier: instead of mixing clumping clay litter with pine pellets, mix NON-CLUMPING clay litter with the pine pellets instead. I did this with my cats (putting 1 inch of the pine pellets on the BOTTOM of the litter box and 2 inches of plain non-clumping litter (you could use scented if you like) on top. I gradually decreased the non-clumping clay litter from 2 inches on top to just a half an inch on top and then finally to just a sprinkling of non-clumping clay litter before finally using only pine pellets (1 inch for small / medium litter boxes and 1 1/2 - 2 inches for bigger litter boxes. Using non-clumping clay litter with pine pellets makes the transition much easier since the pellets do not clump and will interfere with the clumping action of clumping clay litter. It took much longer to transition my cats (2 months in total) as they were more finicky but it worked and it was worth it. Hope this helps. 😃

Loved the video and tips for transitioning to wood pellets! If you put a piece of scrap wood on the other side of the plastic tub as you drill, you won't crack the thinner plastic. Also very important to note that any compost containing feline waste should not be used on edible plants like in your vegetable garden. Use it only for your flower beds. Diseases like toxoplasmosis and giardia can be transmitted to humans from feline waste.

I got a rescue kitty last February and he came with the pellet litter. I love the stuff, I don’t sift it like you do because I never thought of it, fantastic idea. You can also get the pellet litter at pet stores but it’s more expensive. I pay 13.54 for 24 pounds and I order it from Chewy. But due to my physical limitations I have to do it that way. But you’re right tractor supply has the best price and anyone with multiple cats will save lots of money. I only have one. Great video!

If anyone reads this, drill from the inside! This will give a clean hole for your cat. Put something underneath, I used 1" deck rails and moved as needed (I did not use for drilling through, but to prop up). Also, I used a step bit, the 2nd step was 1/4". Then you can clean up any holes from the bottom if needed. This bit made it so easy. Got it for just over $4 on Amazon.
I also made a template. Will try to post online soon if anyone is interested. Went off what someone else said - 3/4" on center with 1/2" apart - staggered. I printed my sheet, used a clear container, put my sheet underneath and used a sharpie to mark my holes and moved the sheet to complete my rows. Alcohol cleans up any marker left behind.
I also have a vertical pee'r, so I had to do some extra steps to make my litter box involving a top container for lid and white rubber roofing attached with rubber cement to keep him from peeing through the gap.

Thank you so much for making this video! I have 8 cats and want to try to transition to pellets. I love that you were very thorough. And maybe it's weird but I like that you showed actual poop in the pellets. That was very helpful to me to see how it works in the pellets. I've seen some mentions here of some cats being allergic or having other issues so with 8 I may have something like that come up with one or two. I honestly think that over the years the dust from the clay litters has affected my lungs as well as some of my cats' lungs. I used to have more cats and the amount of litter and dust was quite high. I don't think it's been good for my eyes either. So I'm hoping for a relatively uncomplicated transition and after watching this video I feel comfortable and confident on how to go about everything. I'm also going to look and see if you have any other DIY or tips and tricks kind of videos on anything else. Thanks again! ❤

ok. been doin lots of interweb searches on this, getting my first cat, a transplant from a passed away relative..going to try to introduce pellet litter to an adult cat
I've learned that all wood pellets are kiln dried, you want to make sure that bag says no additives. theory being it's hard to find kiln dried spelled out clearly because there's no money in being clearly labeled for the consumer, there's more money in selling standard litters or designer litters. considering many cat shelters use wood pellets from the farm store, some disgruntled spoiler would've outed the fact that the litter is killing cats. IMHO.

I seem to have to change mine on a daily because it turns to saw dust quiet quickly with my cats .
Perhaps i have too many cats trying to use the same litter box , lol.
But all in all i love this so much better , it's much cheaper , easier clean up , and virtually no bad odor or nasty litter box smell what's so ever. I think it smells quiet nice the pine pellets. I have one of those sifting litter pans i had bought at walmart and i absolutely love it. But i do want to make my own and a much bigger one.
Such great and informative video thank you so much for all the wonderful advice.

I have several cats and some of those sifting boxes and they haven't worked well for me...but maybe because I use a mix of the regular litter plus clumping litter to help keep the dust down. I'm hoping to have better results with them I am switched over to the pellets.

I have been using the pine pellets for several years but I use other litter with it. What my cats like is Baking soda sprinkled into the bottom of the pan, 2 scoops of non clumping scented clay litter with 2 scoops of regular non clumping litter on top of that, finished with 3 scoops of pine pellets on top. This works very well without the need for the sawdust to go into another pan. I take all solids out of the pans every day. As the pellets break down into sawdust, the depth of the litter expands and the sawdust is actually easier for the cats to bury their poop in. I have 3 cats and 3 litter pans. The pan in the bathroom is changed every week but the pan in the living room and the one in the basement are changed every 3 to 4 weeks, without any problem. I keep another set of pans which I have prepared to switch out when I clean the ones that are in use. I empty the litter into holes that are around the yard or under apple trees. After I empty the pans, I take them to the basement and wash them out and allow them to dry before I fill them with litter for the next change out. As a way of keeping litter from being thrown outside the pans, each litter pan is placed in another litter pan which is larger than the pan containing the litter but I do keep a dust pan and brush nearby to get any pellets that may get on the floor. The scent of the pine pellets, especially as it breaks down into sawdust, keeps the smell down. I am going to buy an outside plastic, waterproof, storage bench to place on my front porch to store my bags of clay litter, pine pellets and boxes of baking soda, so I can stop carrying them to the basement. I have a handicap ramp to the front porch, so I can take my dumping wagon to put the bags of litter from the trunk of my car into any pull up the ramp to put in the storage bench. The wagon is ls also handy to unload groceries and get them into the house in one trip. In the future, I can do my changing on the porch and wash the pans with the hose. and have a place to dry the pans outside.

@@sabellacurtis5535 I did enjoy your video and tried the pellets alone, for some time, but discovered my cats wanted something different. Until the pandemic, I could go to a salvage store where I could get plain clay litter for 50 cents for a 10 pound bag and 1 dollar for a 7 pound scented litter. I also found the pine pellets for about 2 dollars for 20 pounds. When safe, again, I'll go back there.

My 2 cats didn't have any problems when I switched to the pellets. One litter box, few inches of the wood pellets, scoop out the solid waste 2-3 times a day. used when I clean out all of it and and put fresh pellets in I put the old pellets in my flower gardens to keep the weeds down. Easy peasy.

Thank you for this! I’ll definitely have two boxes side by side now. My youngest cat pooped on the floor because she’s refusing the pellets - even mixed with regular clay litter. Guess I need to go back to step one and gradually start adding more pellets. She’s a stubborn one.

I admire those like you who use an x-large litter container because so many folks just use those tiny little cat litter containers that are too small for cats. Especially when you have big cats.
Imagine sitting on a tiny toilet to do your business.

I am trying this now. I bought a new litter box but my cat would not use it with only the pine pellets. I put the old litter back in the old litterbox and sprinkled some pine pellets on top. I didn’t want to change it all at once. Too much change ti quickly. I am trying it on my kitten first then I will try it in my senior cats. I hope it works. Tired of stepping on litter with my bare feet. I hope they get used ti it. Thank you for making this video and explaining the pros and cons and transition period!!!

careful it’s not right for every cat. My 11 year old cat ended up allergic to the pine pellets. She started acting like she had a UTI, anxiety and chewing at her feet. All tests came back fine. We figured out she had been behaving weird for about 3 months and it was getting worse. That was about how long it had been since we started the pine litter. Stopped using it and her behavior totally changed. I researched more and did find where it said older cats in particular can be sensitive to the pine. Expensive vet bill to figure this out, so thought l’d share.

Been using PrettyLitter for a few years and like it sooo much more than the clay, but it's just so expensive! Been wanting to transition to pine pellets and i'm finally gonna pull the trigger today or tomorrow. Currently we have 3 cats with 4 litter boxes. The plan is to replace one of them with pine to start, hoping they will try it out and get used to it. And over the weeks keep replacing the old boxes with pine boxes. Not doing DIY though, too much work :)

Have 4 large cats who transferred well to pellets.
Still working on sifting system that I can use due to low upper body strength to shake. So removing solids
and removing sawdust with cup to extend it being clean. Plan to try the wooden blocks to create easier sift so thanks! Tractor Supply will deliver. I order 6 bags at a time and they are delivered for 14.00. it lasts me 2 months. They were most helpful when they found out I was disabled.

i watched a video where the lady used PVC couplings to put spacing between the litter box layers, and then she used a metal spoon to comb through the pellets, getting the sawdust to fall through the holes,. that's all to say you don't have to lift and shake in order to sift. you just lift when it is cleaning time.

HAHAHA, when you said you have big cats I was thinking, oh, someone else owns a monster. Our cat AIMS for 15-16 pounds! He is now 20 pounds but that's pretty small as he is at least half Maine Coon. I think he's o.k. at that weight but the vet wants to see him at 15 in order to save him from arthritis and other weight-bearing illnesses when he is older. I'm transitioning to kiln-dried pine for both of our cats at the end of the month because the high price of litter is ridiculous and pine is so much better for the earth. Thanks for the info!
