Love this! For cats with urinary issues and require a prescription diet, I put a pee pad on the bottom as they tend to pee like a hose. Helps a lot with keeping everything dry (lasts for a week).

I had a little bit of a problem with the wood pieces (too thin, top tray wouldn’t sit right). So I found a set of three rubber pencil trays at the Dollar Store. I taped them down, upside down. They work perfectly. No need to bother with wood snagging the bag.

@@KellyGuidance I like to jury rig stuff.
When I was in the hospital after surgery, I couldn’t reach the light cord to turn off the back light. So I grabbed some latex gloves, tied them into a chain, tied one end to the cord, and the other end to the bed rail. Worked perfectly! The doctor who came in to examine me the next morning, called me McGiver!

    Hi Kelly!
My husband and I have 3 cats.
I use a similar system, with a different brand of trays but with the Tractor Supply kiln dried pine pellets.
We have used puppy puddle pads in the bottom. I will try your trash bag version and see if that works better. I just hate using so much plastic. I think I need to investigate cardboard box alternatives for disposal.
    Thanks for the tips!
The pine pellets do reduce the odors for cat urine but when cat poop is fresh, it still stinks. Having a container with a lid for scooping cat poop into and closing the lid can help.
    Blessings and Hugs!

Kelly, thank you thank you thank you for this excellent video! I’ve been using the Arm and Hammer trays and Tractor Supply Equine Pine pellets for over a year (the store suggested it). Obviously I (and my cat) love it. Your method will make cleaning the litter box much easier.
Suggestion: Use UNSCENTED bags. Cats really hate scents, especially citrus.

I stopped using the pine pellets 😢 when I saw my cat standing on the ledge of the litter box. I thought, after two years, his paws became delicate. So, after testing other litters, I switched to PetCo SoPhresh Unsented Grass Seed litter (about $20 for a 20lb bag). Um, he still stands on the ledge. So I’m guessing the pine pellets weren’t the problem. I’m going back to the pine pellets next month (just filled box with last bag of grass seed litter).

I've had the new setup for 2 days and they walk over and LOOK at it then go use the old one. (I'm keeping it until changed over). I have begun to put a few pellets in the clay and will gradually add more til they get use to the smell (or no smell- whatever- I have no sense of smell so I don't know if it does or not)... Hoping they transition soon.

There isn't a tractor supply here, so I use horse pellets from Wilco Farm. I pick out the hard stuff every day and kitties stir the pee around and poop some more. The pellets break down into coarse sawdust and when the sawdust is wet and they stop stirring stuff around, I pick out the last of the poo and spread the wet sawdust over my compost bin. Not everyone has a compost bin, so I suppose it just gets tossed in the garbage. I hate to waste anything, not even peed on pellets that dissolve into coarse sawdust. Adds nitrogen to my compost. Also serves to keep critters from digging in my bins and making a mess. Even the crows leave the veggie scraps alone when kitty peed on sawdust is in the bin.

While I was waiting for my hair dye to set, I put together the wood blocks/duct tape/trash bag set-up. The only thing I changed is, instead of using the scooper, I shake the two pans about 16-20 times, so the sawdust falls into the bag. Good core workout (😜), too!

My one cat doesn't mind pellets (he grew up on them) but the other one won't use them at all (he was abandoned and I took him in, so I don't know what he grew up in but he uses regular litter and was litterbox trained already). Sad I can't use this trick.

Try pine cobble by exquisite cat. I started with that it is softer much like clay but made of pine pellets and supper easy to clean! no special box needed. All you do is remove the poo and stir the litter around daily so there is no wet spots and your done. change out after 14 days.

My cat doesn’t bury the poop. Since the pine litter is biodegradable, I use three pieces of Kleenex, pick up the poop and a little bit of the litter (as little as possible), and flush it all in the toilet. (My bathroom is right outside my bedroom door.)
I’ve also noticed the kind of food I feed my cat definitely affects the smell of the poop. The higher the protein and quality, the less smell.
