    Very nice video! I have 30 neons in my tank, as you say they are only sometimes aggressive with each other but not other species. Have them with julii Cory's, ember tetras, rummy nose tetras, a few CPDs, some Nerites and some neocaradina, everyone gets on although they all pick on the baby neocaradina.. I keep them at 28C and they love it! All the best from Ireland 👍

    You should definitely try adding some leaf litter or just one or two large leaves, I’ve noticed that corys enjoy siting on and under them, also neon tetra also enjoy them since they are in their natural habitat!
    Edit: did I mention I like corydoras 💀

    All you can do is the best you can for them and I bet they'll do just fine. I do still get kind of paranoid at times though. I think, for me, it's because I realize there is just SO much information to know and even though I do a lot of research I still find out there is more to watch out for.
    I can't remember if you have snails, but if you do that would be a cool video too. I don't know why but I can't keep them in most of my tanks successfully for very long.

    I have 6 with 6 platy plus babies 9!!, 4 guppies, 4 zebra danios, 4 silver tipped tetras. They seem happy to do there own thing. They swim through all the growth, swim all levels, like to ferret around dead leaves nose around the floor. They join in eating flake, protein, egg yolk, bit chicken and tin tuna.

    I have no luck with neon tetras but with cardinal and green neon tetras i do. Neon tetra disease can be seen with cardinal as well and i lost about 6 though it appears non contagious since the rest (38 cardinals and 15 green neons) are all good. In my years of keeping tetras i recommend to rather keep cardinal tetras as they are sturdier and can tolerate high ph (mine is 7.8-8.0). Do not believe the internet that this fish is good for beginners because it's definitely not. It thrives well in a seasoned tank. Cardinals also tend to live longer bout 4-5 years. Green neon tetra imo is the prettiest among them.

    • @GlassBoxDiaries
      @GlassBoxDiaries  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Totally agree mate, like I mention at the end of the video, I worry about a breakout of neon tetra disease in my tank wiping my neons out and sometimes wish I went with cardinals instead.
      Thats a great point about the higher pH though, I tried to slightly increase the pH of my community tank when I had guppies in there and the neon tetras didnt seem to take to it at all and pretty much stopped all movement unless it was to get food.
      I moved my guppies to their own dedicated tank and let the pH of the community tank drop back to normal and the neons went back to normal.

    Add a couple phantom tetras. They wont harm anything in your tank but they will have the neons schooling better.

    I've never owned neons, but I've got white skirts(kind of huge) and ember tetras(like half neon tetra size), and while they're very different fish they actually behave exactly the same. It seems the smallest fish in every "school" gets chased away - this has been the case *every* time for me. Likewise, neither has ever been aggressive to any tank mates, even baby shrimp.
    I've had the same results feeding, too - they strongly prefer high protein foods (particularly bug bites). I DO have success with Tetra brand flakes (though they need crushing for the tiny Ember Tetras) but they strongly prefer bug bites.
    Following your earlier suggestion of the pepper grinder, I'm mixing tetra flakes (mostly because I ended up with Lots of them) and the bug bites in the grinder. The bug bites sink faster and the ground flake slower, which seems to work to get a good spread of sinking time extending the time mid-level feeders like tetras have food moving through the tank.
    Seriously, that pepper grinder suggestion is amazing. It's such a good idea.

    • @GlassBoxDiaries
      @GlassBoxDiaries  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the input mate, are your ember tetras easy to care for?
      I'm down to either ember tetras or platies in my 12 gallon tank when the 40 gallon is ready for the guppies but really can't decide between the two.

    • @Wintersdark
      @Wintersdark 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@GlassBoxDiaries yes, they're pretty bulletproof. Same Tetra needs/wants but small - the only trouble is what you've already solved (very small mouths). They're newer and thus lack the genetic issues neons have, and I've never seen a malformed one in a store.
      Like neons, they're more shoaling than schooling, but when it's feeding time or they're startled they bunch right up. The more relaxed and "day to day" they are though the more they tend to spread out and do their own thing. That said, being very small, you can have a LOT of them very easily. Absolutely trivial bioload.

    • @GlassBoxDiaries
      @GlassBoxDiaries  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Wintersdark Perfect, sounds exactly like what i'm after so I think I will get ember tetras once the guppies are in their larger tank :).

    • @Wintersdark

      @@GlassBoxDiaries Oh, DEFINITELY run a prefilter sponge if you're using an HOB. They're tiny, curious, and stupid, so you need to be careful about where they'll wedge themselves.
      Very hardy, though. I think, small mouth issues aside, they're a better newbie fish than neons by a mile due to that.
      No issues with them nipping fins, and they're fast enough that they're in no danger from most larger fish. Not to say I'd put them with fish that could actually eat them, but I wouldn't worry about bullying.
      As you found with your neons, they don't tend to hide in plants, which is good IMHO - my emerald danios do, and while they're gorgeous, I only ever see them at feeding time.

      @GlassBoxDiaries  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Wintersdark Thanks for the tips, it will be a 12 gallon tank with just Ember Tetras as far as fish go but there will be shrimp and snails in there too.
      I already have a prefilter sponge on as my shrimp can get in the intake without one.

    I HATEEEEEE NEON TETRAS, besides me having two beautiful neon tetras. I think I’ve stated this before here on your channel. For beginners I do not suggest neon tetras I know their vibrant colors and mentions of being “beginner fish” they’re not at ALLL. They’re beautiful fish but prone to many diseases and get stress almost instantly which causes ick. I suggest getting ember tetras beautiful fiery fish that are a bit more hardier.

      I haven't kept neons once ! But before this month I bought some ! I found that they donot like sudden changes in tanks , they need to be heated ! Other than that they are pretty easy to keep ! But they really are very much prone to ick ! But if the temp goes too low they get ick easily ! If they are heated they don't get ick !

      @@NatureStudio25 Agreed, they are easy once you pass all those things. Cause my current neon tetras have been so cute together. However, not worth the amount of money I spent. Could’ve put that to something like more food or a better heater.
