      Currently trying out my first ever aquarium and I would recommend some real plants. Get slow growing plants that are easy to keep like cryptocorynes and they should survive pretty easily, make sure to wash your plants before putting them in the aquarium to get rid of pest snails though, I’ve got quite the infestation at the moment. I’m not an expert so take this all with a grain of salt

    • @soccreyes4647
      @soccreyes4647 ปีที่แล้ว

      My opinion is, if you have a 20 gallon, get 8 to 10 of them and don't add glow danios because they won't school. If you want to add more schooling fish with neons, get 8 purple zebra danios. I like em alot better than neons because they school more often than neons who usually stay in the middle of the tank or bottom stationary.

  • @wallytuber
    @wallytuber 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    neon tetras are now bred in captivity at PH above 7 for the last decade and not captured directly from the amazon. I have tried to use the almond leaves. They do increase tannins in the water but I have found no difference in my waters PH from the leaves. My PH stays around 7.4. Also the tannins are not good for the planted aquariums because they block a lot of light. I have decided to stay away from any attempts to lower the PH naturally or unnatural and to focus on keeping a heavily planted tank and a diverse diet. Heavily planted tanks are good for almost all fish. Also it is good to have a small separate tank to observe and medicate fish when you first get them as well as to seperate them from the main tank when you observe sickness. Neons are extremely sensitive fish. So many die in quarantine tank before they even make it to the main tank. But if using this method, very few die in the main tank. I currently keep a school of 20 in my 55 gallon.

    In 38 years of fish keeping, neon tetras are still my favorite fish. I currently have 12 in a community tank and they are gorgeous when they school. Lightly planted tank as of about a month ago, 1st time trying real plants, but mine have been fantastic with fake plants. I have had schools live 5-6 years with only losing maybe 1 or 2 over those years. Best foods I have found are Hikari micro pellets, Hikari vibra bites but I crush them up small so the larger fish can eat the full size, and the neons would eat the smaller pieces. Extreme brand krill flakes, Extreme brand community pellets, Fluval bug bites, Tetra Tropical flakes, and frozen brine shrimp!

    My tetras loooove the pellets I fed my betta. They started hoarding them from the betta and piling them in a corner so they could school feed on them without the betta stealing any, it was so funny.

    Ahh!! I am getting rid of a red and black gravel today. One thing I noticed while doing a tank clean is that the red abd black gravel was all PAINTED and little paint chips was just flaking off. I found some basic gravel at a local store though and bought that like candy.
    I wish I could have a pla ted tank but sadly I live in a desert. That makes shipping a no no until fall or winter.
    My fish are a second rescue, and i want to do right by them.

    It’s tough to balance the plants need for light and the Neon’s aversion for light, any tips? I think I’m stressing my guys out but also my tank is quite heavily planted…

      Man I wish I could have a tank that big! It took alot of convincing to get my parents permission for a larger tank (just short of 5gal)

    Rooibos tea (Coles and Woolworths) is the best and cheapest method of adding tannins @ 1x teabag per 45-litres. 😉

    Ugh... my mum impulse bought these fish for my 6-year old brother. She assumes Thye were guppies and didn’t bother to do research! Didn’t even know what species of fish they are! Ugh....
