How To Easily Make A Planted Shrimp Jar - Yellow Cherry Shrimp Jar Setup Using The Walstad Method!
Introduction to My Shrimp Jar Project: I start by introducing my new shrimp jar project, a surprisingly simple setup that anyone can recreate. I explain that this jar, a 1.7 US gallon or 6.5-liter container, is the perfect size for a small shrimp colony and emphasize that it's a great way to use leftover equipment from other aquascaping projects.
Equipment and Setup Overview: I list the equipment I've used, noting that many of the items are reusable from other setups. The focus of this project is on employing the Walstad method, where live plants serve as a natural filtration system, perfectly suited for the low bioload of shrimp.
Preparing the Substrate: I take you through my process of sieving top soil to remove large debris, which is crucial for maintaining a clean environment in the confined space of a jar. I emphasize the importance of this step, as it ensures a nutrient-rich base for the plants and avoids unnecessary waste in the limited substrate volume.
Layering and Planting Strategy: After preparing the soil, I press it down in the jar to eliminate air pockets, which could cause issues later. I then cap the soil with black gravel to lock in the nutrients and prevent the soil from clouding the water. I chose black gravel specifically to create a striking contrast against the bright yellow of the shrimp.
Water Addition and Plant Introduction: I slowly fill the jar with water that I've treated with a conditioner to remove impurities, protecting the shrimp from harmful chemicals. I introduce various plants, including rotala rotundifolia in the background and Christmas moss in the foreground, explaining how these plants provide both aesthetic appeal and essential biological filtration.
Adding Hardscape and Aesthetic Details: I describe adding a stainless steel square wrapped with moss and a piece of lava rock as hardscape elements. I discuss the selection process and the benefits of these materials, not just for their visual appeal but also for providing structural support for the plants and hiding spots for the shrimp.
Acclimating and Introducing the Shrimp: With the setup complete, I move on to introducing the shrimp. I detail the acclimation process, emphasizing the importance of adjusting the shrimp slowly to the jar's water conditions to minimize stress. I recommend waiting until the ecosystem has stabilized, with mature plants and sufficient biofilm, before adding the shrimp.
Maintenance Tips and Overview: As I wrap up the video, I share some maintenance tips, like how to check water quality and manage plant growth effectively. I express how pleased I am with both the functionality and the aesthetics of the jar, highlighting how it has become a self-sustaining ecosystem that requires little intervention.
Engagement and Conclusion: Finally, I encourage viewers to try creating their own shrimp jar and share their experiences. I invite them to subscribe and stay tuned for more updates on this project and other similar endeavors, fostering a community of hobbyists who share a passion for aquascaping.

    I appreciate your content. I am unsure of the solution or the correct term for what I am attempting to describe. However, I believe that enhancing your narration in your videos would be beneficial. The most effective way to grasp what I am trying to convey is to listen to your video at double the speed, where you will notice a repetitive flow of run-on sentences. Each sentence seems to start quickly and then gradually slows down, resembling a series of bullet points being read one after another. It just does not appear to be ideal. I am not criticizing you, nor am I in a position to offer advice. This is simply constructive feedback.

      Those fish will quickly out grow a 5 gallon tank but a cheap sponge filter with a cheap USB air pump should be perfect. I use the same combo in a bunch of tanks now and it adds minimal water flow so it doesn't stress my fish or shrimp :)

    Great video and nice to see some content from UK fishkeepers 😊 I want to set up a male guppy tank and have very soft water Will try the crushed coral before deciding. Does doing a water change not cause the water parameters to swing a lot regarding GH/KH if you are adding new soft water to the tank? Could this be harmful for them? How big of a water change do you do personally?

      People say hold your finger out to the glass to see if it flares and it will be more aggressive. Personally I don't really think this works well but my two that are fine with shrimp don't flare and the one that ate all her shrimp would flare at me just for being close to her tank.

    I have a 3 gallon vase with plants attached to wood, a heater and a light and a mini sponge filter at the bottom. It was set up for over 6 months. Then I added 3 red shrimp that did fine but never bred. Unfortunately when I went and bought a few more, I lost all but one shrimp after adding them. Checked and there was a slight ammonia spike. Not too sure why. Maybe a bit too much leaf litter or food (I barely fed). Do you do water changes in the jar?

      A company named Vevor seems to be getting in on the aquarium game - they often do a lot of catering and foodservice grade equipment at really low cost, amongst other random tools and accessories. They're a pretty good sweet spot between good quality products and a decent price point They seem to have shops in lots of places including the UK so it might be worth considering. I can't attest to the quality of their aquarium product line but I've used other stuff from them and I've been impressed. I suspect that they just find the best selling products and get a manufacturing company to make stuff to the same specs but with Vevor branding on them. Might be worth considering.

    The filter is not as important as the media in it and its very important to stay away from plastic media by very nature its antibacterial sponge filters are ok but only really bio filter my tips are simply deep substrate plants and lots of media oh and dont mess with it to much

    I hope you have better success as time goes on, and I’m inclined to think their demise had far less to do with your care and more to do with what they experienced before they arrived. Corey at aquarium co-op has an excellent video where he explains why livebearers have such high mortality. th-cam.com/video/oE9s3Q-c14U/w-d-xo.html. I have moderately soft water from a drilled well, so I have been adding rinsed crushed coral to my tanks or hob filters. But the first guppies I purchased met similar fates as yours. We have similar restrictions on aquarium meds in Canada, and pet store guppies are often stressed by the brackish-to-soft water transition if imported, columnaris bacteria, and camallanus worms. I nearly gave up on guppies.

      Thanks for the tips mate, someone recommended crushed coral a couple of months back and I picked some up, havent lost a guppy since :).

    My veiltail betta's fins get raggedy too. The parameters are fine so I have doubts that it's rot. I just keep an eye on them if they might get out of hand; maybe treating him with meds but I'd rather not. Glad your guy doesn't have fin rot. Seems like the biggest issue people bring up is water parameters in dirted tanks. Bet your stems are doing the trick to eliminate anything developing. How's the PH in that tank? I was thinking the use of root tabs temporarily with the low level plants might help til they reach the nutrients but hasn't taken too much time so maybe not worth the effort!

      @GlassBoxDiaries หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cheers mate :). Yea I have meds in my supply stash incase rot sets in but I watch him every day, I think its just one of those things where i'm paranoid so I see things that arnt there. The pH of that tank was holding at around 6.8 but I havent been checking much recently in all honesty as it was so consistent.

    As for shrimp & fish, i find theres SO MUCH gnashing of teeth online regarding fish eating baby shrimp and while I'll concede its both possible and even probable, in no circumstances have I ever found it to significantly impact shrimp breeding. Now, if youre breeding for commercial purposes, maybe that's different, but for home aquariums even in my 29g which features dozens of various nano fish (and a bristlenose) or my 40g which has about 12 larger corydoras now and a 3" long Siamese Algae Eater. None of these has put any significant dent in shrimp breeding rates. And ive never witnessed a shrimp eaten - though like your experience ive absolutely seen my cory's absolutely bulldoze shrimp out of the way when theyre snoofering around the substrate. Side note: there's all this talk about cory's, sand, and their barbels. Mine have been breeding in my 40g for a while now, with a large, coarse gravel substrate throughout most of the tank, and they all have if anything grown longer barbels. I'm convinced the "cories need sand" line is just another one of those things people hear and repeat, but which is completely wrong.

      @GlassBoxDiaries หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally agree mate! Theres so many things said online by people who havent tested it that its actually pretty annoying. My corydoras are on Aquasoil now and they are more active than ever and it seems its easier for them to dig into it when looking for their food.

    I only track gh and kh in my normal weekly 7-in-1 test strip. Im aware these are less accurate but that doesnt matter - I'm not looking for exact values, I'm looking for changes, for unexpected results. As my tap water is quite neocaradina friendly, i know just doing small weekly water changes will keep things roughly where they ought to be, so theres not much of a concern. Ive never bothered with TDS. I have a meter, but it seems totally useless as it reads *everything* in the water, not just minerals. I suppose monitoring for changes wiuld give you an indication of... Well... Changes. But without any knowledge of what changes or even if its bad. This has worked flawlessly for me for ages. I think ive seen a grand total of three dead shrimp over about 18 months of shrimpkeeping, so im not too concerned. I do find that my ahrimp do better in larger tanks regarding breeding. I *suspect* shrimp get friskier when they see theres lots of available food *and space* as uve noted even with increasing feeding, breeding for me appears to slow as populations increase - insee the biggest spikes in berries shrimp after removing a bunch of shrimp for another tank or to give away.

      @GlassBoxDiaries หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea I picked up a TDS pen but I rarely use it. I only have 6 Gallon tanks for my shrimp breeders right now as I just don't have the space available but eventually I want far larger tanks for them :)

    I got 2 from PaH like you - definitely thick lipped, one is now 4 inches and INCREDIBLY aggressive towards any fish that goes in his territory. Mainly the other thicklip I got at the same time (thinking they were both red honeys) When I asked PaH about this, they took them off the shelves at my local shop.

    When the popular grows so much there’s no risk of ammonia?

    • @GlassBoxDiaries
      @GlassBoxDiaries หลายเดือนก่อน

      I doubt it, they eat far less than even small fish and produce very little waste. To my knowledge, the main risk of a large shrimp colony is poor mineral content in your water causing alot of them to fail their molt at the same time so they die and their corpse may cause an ammonia spike. Even then though, its easy to see the dead shrimp and remove them before it becomes an issue. I just ordered some shrimp salt to try and remove that risk completely though.
