- This is reality after mastering a lick; another one comes to humble you.
HUGE THANK YOU TO CHAD LB!!! He has quite literally made my entire summer. This week, he has shown me around New York and his awesome life style. I've never even been to New York before (other than one time that I vaguely remember as a small child). I met so many cool people - Augie Bello, Melissa Aldana, Dayna Stephens, Emmet Cohen, Bruce Harris, etc... I feel very inspired and excited to see what life can become for me after school is finally done for good. Chad and I shot a couple more videos, so stay tuned for those. I feel incredibly privileged to have even got to do this collab with Chad LB, let alone have a friendship, as he has been a major influence on me for like, forever lol. I don't know why all of these good things are happening to me in particular of all people, but I will just keep riding the wave. Life's surprises are so much cooler than anything I could ever plan in a million years. I will stay out of fate's way and just let it do its magic. I am an open vessel. I am also a tired vessel. It is 7 am and I haven't slept. I am still at Chad's house, and his girlfriend is so kind. She is also a Red Bull fiend like me so she has a lot and shares it with me. I will catch these 3 hours of sleep then chug a fat Red Bull. Thank you Melissa.

I have actually experienced this where I get frustrated, leave the lick or passage, come back the next day (or two days later if I'm really salty) and lo and behold! I play it perfectly. Only once of course.

This is so relatable. When I first started playing Trumpet, there was this Clifford Brown lick I liked and I transcribed it. I struggled so much when I tried to play it and I threw a tantrum much like Nathan did. I went to my mentor the next day and he told me "Just relax bro." (The magic pill). And I played the lick perfectly, not at the full tempo though. It was such an achievement that I felt like I don't need to practice it again and have since forgotten how to play it. I should check it out again.
I haven't had a day this bad in a very very long time... Thank you so much for making that go away Nate. You make me smile when I feel I can't ❤

I tell my students it's like cooking a big pot of soup. You gotta put in all your ingredients (slow practice) but when it's not fully ready you can't keep adding seasoning to force it to taste good (over-practicing, speeding up too quickly, and making silly mental mistakes). Instead you gotta put a lid on it and let it simmer (take a break and let your brain do it's magic to solidify those new pathways). It will always taste better when it's had time for the flavors to meld and you will sound better if you trust your brain to do it's job.
