Used to be a big Optima fan, my last one was 16 years old. After they moved to Mexico they were going bad after 3-5 years so just wasn't worth the money to me.
I plan to switch to Odyssey but my 2011 dual yellow top optima’s are still going in 2023. Prob 200 miles on wash board dirt roads over those years. I’ve never seen batterie go over 11 years. I got lucky on my two yellows.
My dad’s 65 chevelle has a optima red top that’s well over 20 years old and continues to baffle us on how good it is. But a couple years ago I got a yellow top for my off-road rig and had that disconnect problem you were talking about. Had no idea they moved manufacturing to Mexico… won’t buy or recommend one again until they bring back their old quality!
Thanks for the info. Liked your story about the light still being on because nobody believes my ass when I tell my story. Back in the day when optima was good I turned the stereo way down on my Jeep and forgot it for five days. When I came back and heard it I started the Jeep up no problem.
You MUST give AGM batteries a sympathetic charge every 30-60 days in order to properly maintain an AGM battery. If your not giving your AGM battery a periodic sympathetic charge using an external charger on a regular basis, your AGM battery will degrade faster than a lead acid battery. Properly MAINTAINED an AGM battery will far out last a flooded lead acid. Most people do not properly maintain their AGM batteries.
Great job man, I like your straight forward opinion on the subject of batteries. I have a 3rd gen 4Runner and currently looking for good battery for it. Thanks.
Moved to Mexico where the costs are a third.... but the price stayed the same and quality is down, and Johnson Controls posted strong earnings last year? The invisible hand of the market can do no wrong. How many battery brands does Johnson Controls own anyway? 20 you say? Well hooray for that competitive neocon spirit! But seriously, folks, JC owns something like 75% of battery brands, and that right there is probably the best argument for going with Oddysey.
Great video and information, don't you have to have a higher charging voltage to charge a AGM battery, I thought it was suppose to be 14.5 to 14.8 volts? What is your opinion on Pulsetech battery chargers and PowerPulse passive desulfators? I have a PowerPulse on my 2001 BMW battery for the past three years. Pulsetech claims that their patented frequency they use to desulfate a battery can extend your battery life up to three times longer.
My odyssey left me stranded on account of the running board lights when my truck doors are open. They eventually go off maybe 20 minuets. yet it still Just drained it, 5 years old. Just my experience.
I got a optima yellow top battery back in 2012 and it lasted about a year till it died. Advanced auto parts warranteed it out, and about a year later it died again, they gave me a 3rd battery and told me if it happened again they couldn't do anything for me again..10 years later in looking to get another one but I know I'll regret it so I might go odyssey
@@whoisluu9126 yup, now they are trash. Hopefully they turn it around and decide to come back to their roots. The greedy new owners thought that very long lasting batteries weren’t making then money.
I agree with your assessment that Optima batteries have lost much of their dependability and quality. One brand of AGM battery that I find very impressive is Full Throttle Battery.
Funny thing is I bought an Odyssey and it died in just over 3 years. Replaced it with Optima and guess what…3 years dead.Bought a Deka battery, standard wet cell, at less than half the price, it been 5 years and going strong. Will never buy Optima or Odyssey batteries again.
I have never met anyone that owned an Optima battery that didn't have problems. It was dead all the time, I agree when they first hit the market they were good. Piles of shit but people keep buying them.
I just bought a yellow top optima 5 months ago the thing is already starting too loose charge and I got 205 amp alternator , what size odessey is a direct replacement for the yellow top 34/78 ??
That is why I buy my battery for the warranty at autozone or similar big box part start I know their warranty policy like the back of my hand I can replace my battery as many times as I want in that 3 year warranty
I have an Odyssey performance group 35 in my 2003 Accord LX, and a Northstar pro 24f in my 2013 Accord EX-L V6 sedan. Both made by EnerSys, both capable of turning the car over without any dimming of headlights. I wouldn't use anything else.
Yeah, and I've noticed the current ratio is different.I don't think I get very much current.I've been maintaining my optimistic batteries for a long time. With a maintainer charger plugging wall setup
I had an Optima Battery for my 4Runner. It was overpriced crap that lasted maybe 2 years. I replaced with an Odyssey and 5 years later it still works. That's not bad considering I live in the Phoenix Area. 100+ degree temps for half the year.
Long story short a alternator charges slowly but can over a long period under and over charge a AGM battery. The reason a normal battery charger is bad is because they quick charge and it heats up the battery. This will dry out an AGM battery and because they are sealed it will eventually kill the battery.
I'm wanting to put an AMG battery in my old 1958 Willys. The drive train has been swapped out for a 283 sbc and a regular alternator. Do I need anything special to add an AMG to my setup ?? Or is it just when converting A/C to D/C when charging ??
Ok it's really hit and miss with them some are fuckin impossible to kill. I have one that is over 5 years old and it's been banging 4000 watts of stereo equipment its entire life. The prior one leaked and bubbled over so they aren't all shit. I do maintenance on the battery with the centech charger and it's definitely helping it last longer.
Optima went from being the best 20 or so years ago, to the worst today. My last 2 Optimas were junk within a couple of years. I don't know what they changed when they moved production to Mexico but they ruined their reputation. I'll never buy another one.
Unfortunately the beloved Toyota tacoma is made in Mexico( not in Texas anymore), Honda's, Chevy and GMC, CAT, JOHN DEERE, CASE, etc.. what is bad is the oem battery is sh**. It will corrode terminals and the cables, battery tray, hold down bracket. Switch it to AGM Battery no more problems. Join this century technology not the fluid filled design. AGM Battery brand? Your choice.
First Optima I owned I purchased in 2010. That thing was awesome. Lasted like 8 years. Actually I still have it. I might be able to revive it. I don't know about the current quality. Might go with Oddesy, cost less and better reviews
Odyssey may be a decent battery but their warranty is not worth a shit ! Have one for a year and a half and they’re saying the battery is OVER DISCHARGED so they will NOT Replace it. I think it’s BS ! If you buy a battery anywhere that has a warranty and the battery goes bad, the place you bought it will replace it with no questions asked. I will NEVER BUY ANOTHER ODYSSEY BATTERY !! Odyssey company is a JOKE !!
Optima is grab They use to be good I have 5 odyssey batteries for the last 4 years. Never had a problem and they have a 5 year warranty from north east battery

16 is impressive. I’m at 11 on two Mexico versions in a diesel truck.
Crazy how moving to Mexico just turned these products to shit…we need MADE IN USA back
Got 13 years on my pre Mexico move yellow top battery
Just watched Scotty Kilmer's review on the Optima battery. You two are on the SAME PAGE for the reasons not to buy them. Thanks for sharing!

Rip off prices for a battery made in Mexico !
Your videos are great. Good info with alot of laughs.
I had 5 optima batteries 4 died within 2 years in my pull truck I now run 4 Odysseys haven’t failed my yet.
lmao, funny video. Informative, didnt realize Optima moved to Mexico, too bad. Loved those batts, now its onto Odessey. Thanks

So wait, just so I understand - if a regular charger won't work with it, does the alternator cope with it fine?

Nope, optima is Johnson control, odyssey is enersys
