Scotty I have a 2021 bmw x7 with 1,156 miles the cars radio isn’t working I took it to a bmw dealership and they wanted 8,900 dollars to fix it. Am I being ripped off? Let me know
@@master88yt67 Why is not under warranty??? Oh, Wait, It's a 2021 - only the dealer can service it - You don't need Scotty to tell you YOU ARE BEING RIPPED OFF! Find an independent mechanic or go to a "car radio shop". Even if you have to drive 100 miles it would still be cheaper! Find another dealer?
You can also take a battery tester to a junkyard and get a good one there for $35 they usually have a shelf of them inside by the checkout hello scotty
The batteries the Walmart and autozone sells come from the same factory. The only thing different is the label. They are both made by Johnson Controls. I know because I am a truck driver and I have picked up and delivered these.
That could be location dependant. There are only a few battery companies in the USA. Walmart might buy from more than one, depending on price and location. Always check the manufacturer date.
Yes they come from the same factory. But they make different quality for each retailer. The top line Walmart battery is equivalent to autozones mid level.
Hi Scotty, I once wasted 5 years of my life working in a battery manufacturing plant. I learned a lot about automotive batteries as well as getting lead poisoning. Now this manufacturer is very well known company but the real secret was that we built batteries for everybody. We built batteries for discount auto parts stores as well as batteries for the likes of Ford and John Deere. Sometimes our production line would change who we were building for mid shift. The reason this was possible was simple. The only difference between the 70 buck discount battery and the 160 buck JD or Ford battery was the color of the plastic case and the placard we slapped on the top. Internally they were all the same battery. The only different battery we made that was different was military grade batteries. They were three times the size and weight of car batteries, were constructed with a much heavier shell and still had tar filled tops so bad cells could be easily replaced. Recently some scam artists are claiming they can teach you "the secret" of repairing car batteries. Now there is a way to get a bit more life out of some small rechargeable batteries if you don't mind one or two of them exploding in your face. But I know for a fact today's car batteries are specifically built so nobody can repair them. If a battery came off the assembly line defective we would cut the top off with a band saw (because once the top is epoxied on it will never come off) the lead was then recycled and the rest of the battery (plastic shell and paper separators were tossed into the trash bin. If the manufacturer can't repair them nobody else is going to be able to do so either. The lab boys spent all day making sure of that.
My buddy worked at a battery place. He told me you are tested once a month for lead poisoning. If your levels are too high then you need to work with a protective suit until they go down. Sounds nuts to me they don't wear that stuff all the time but I would imagine getting very hot in summer.
My mother-in-law's battery died when she was visiting. I got her the cheapest Walmart battery just so she would leave. Well, it was too good. It's been 5 years and she keeps coming back. Same battery I bought her.
U shudda kept da old one 😂... an stuck it back in @ her house ( in da dark) and then did 1 🏃♂️... jus kiddin , dat wot I wud do , if I were still wed 🥳... tarra 👍🍻👋👋👋🇬🇧
Anyone else notice...Cars today don't give warnings when the battery is getting old and worn out. You just go out one day and suddenly it won't start. Also, they have scanners that can check the battery health that plug into your OBD port (on board computer). WHICH MEANS.....your car's computer already has the proper testing and feedback components and car makers could easily give you a warning before you're left stuck. But they dont!
He’s accurate about the old Delco battery. I used to work for Delco and we built batteries in Muncie, IN , New Jersey and Anaheim, CA. When Delco closed those plants and the batteries were sourced to Korea, battery warranty claims went crazy. Most of it had to do with the shelf life.
I've worked at AZ for 3 years now as a 2nd job. The most any battery has gone up in that 3 years is $10 & that was during this year. There was a $5 increase in the spring & another $5 increase in the fall.
I think I commented this before, but the guy at autozone tried getting me to buy the most expensive battery by saying “this battery will make your car feel like a Tesla”......I’m dead serious
Great video!! I've worked at a battery shop for 17 years, and everything you say in this video is correct! Delco batteries are still made in Korea by Atlas Battery and are actually pretty good now. Just stay away from Exide Batteries, they are absolute junk. And they just declared bankruptcy again.
Ha ha! Spot on! I jumped off this college student's car with her boyfriend standing there. After I got it going, I told her to get it replaced at Walmart, not the local Auto Zone. .they will rip you off. The boyfriend got mad and and said "I work at Auto Zone!" 😆 I left and said "Walmart!"
That ever start battery that Wal-Mart sells , on reviews it holds up very well when compared to big name battery’s. Can’t beat it for the price ! Saves you about $80 to $100 some cases !
Advance, AutoZone, O’Reilly’s, Walmart, and Costco all source their batteries from Johnson Controls. The batteries offered by these five companies have little to no differentiation between one another aside from their label. The three aforementioned parts stores fix their prices to one another which plays a big role in the sudden price jump of lead acid batteries. (For the record, the “new” Diehard batteries offered at Advance are nothing more than relabeled AutoCraft batteries). Brand names in the car battery world are as meaningless as it gets, be mindful when you purchase your next car battery
Speaking of ADVANCE AUTO batteries, I've had really good luck with a Size 65 AGM battery I bought there. It's 4 years old and it still acts like a brand-new battery. The Optima AGM that preceded it died after only three years.
There are 2 battery manufactures in the USA... Johnson Control and East Penn. You can tell the difference by looking at them, raised cap covers, that is Johnson Control. Flat tops are East Penn. Note, that is probably 90% of the batteries. So, if you buy a Walmart, Oreilly, Autozone, Advance, Napa, Excide, Interstate or any car battery, you will see the same battery with different labels. However, we now are seeing import batteries come in from China, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Korea, Japan. Even though there are 2 US makers, you can tell the difference in the grades by the weight of the battery. Before you say no way... look at them. Pick up a 65 series battery with a 1 year warranty, and 3 year warranty... which is heavier? Which has more crank amps? With today's electrical demands, buy the battery that has the right amps and size for your vehicle. Trying to get by cheap, will cost you in the long run.
Sometimes the truth hurts. Scotty doesn't mistreat people, or companies. He tells it like it is. If they want a good reputation, BE REPUTABLE. If ya rip people off, Scotty will not lie for you.
Need to check amperage also; had a battery with all the voltage, but some 150 amps less than rated while still in warranty on a professional battery tester. New battery solved my issues.
I don't recommend people to buy junk yard batteries, just like windows - half the time it costs more then to just buy a new one. But if you have a tester and you know what your doing then you know it'll be okay.
Yep I hear you- A buddy talks to guys that run a wreckingyard-they would say which vehicles got hauled in because of accident...,good thing about that was he knew they were driving so pull running engines and transmissions ... great way to run a backyard business..
@@BigEightiesNewWave And it's true. Every Sunday morning I wait in line outside my local sporting goods store just to buy ammo once the store opens. If I'm not one of the first ones in line then I usually miss out on buying ammo.
A well kept secret, is a battery manufactured in USA in Pennsylvania by a company called Eastpenn mfg. Their Deka line is one of the best batteries for the money. The battery is sold at independent auto supply stores or tire shops. I am impressed with how well their batteries hold up. I bought one for a truck rated at 850A CCA and it tested out at over 950A CCA on the meter.
nope, you can't do better than a 'maxx' at Walmart, (made by Johnsons who make over half the batteries in America), for half the price, and Walmart offers a 3 yr warranty
@@bobbear4437 Johnsons Controls was sold to private equity firm Brookes in 2019. The MBA/bean counters are well on their way to breaking the paradigm of automotive batteries while creating synergies aligning their profit margins with customer's wallets. Help them welcome their new Teams in Mexico, Vietnam as they give their US team-mates as heartfelt thank for their decades of contributions to the company...
I’ve been buying batteries at Walmart for ever. They perform well and when it is time to replace they will credit you for any guaranteed life. I just take a wrench and do the swap right there which saves a trip etc,
Hey Scotty I just wanna say I really appreciate everything you've done over the years. You truly are one of a kind and inspired me to fear no fix. Thank you for everything and have a great day!
I bought a deep cycle marine battery, essentially two batteries in one. Run power equipment etc and still have plenty of power. I paid $300 at Batteries Plus, installed with a 5 year replacement warranty. I like it!
Power equipment? As in gas/diesel powered? As in, equipment that has an engine and an alternator which charges its battery? Or is this some 500w inverter powering corded tools? One way is kind of smart, the other way is kind of dumb.
Thanks Scotty!!!!!! You just saved me over a $100.00 and a trip to the local Auto Zone!! Found the same battery I needed at Walmart, and because I'm lazy and hate traffic, I'm having it delivered! I'd give ya a big ole smooch😘 But Homie don't play dat🤣
I know a guy who got 7 years out of a NAPA battery. I put one in my truck last month. Costed me about $150 bucks but not a bad price to pay for that long of a life. My previous battery barely survived 2.5 years.
The ones from fort Hood used to come from interstate, I stopped using interstate though cause they arent made as well. Started getting energizer cause they are made in America and seriously seem to last longer than the optimas (made by interstate) I used to use. But sounds like you got a good deal!
I have noticed Ford factory installed Motorcraft batteries with the sight glass last incredibly long. I had one that lasted 16 years in a 4x4 Ranger and 19 years in a 4x4 F350.
I got a battery from O' Reilly's auto parts and it's three years old and still going strong - even after allowing it to go dead from idleness a couple of times.
Bought a battery from AutoZone had to it quit I had to get right over before it stopped $145. 2 days later I was in Home Depot yeah, they had the same battery for $59. Now all Home Depots don't carry batteries but the one I was in in San Antonio did. So check around don't wait till you have to have a battery because AutoZone will rip you off. Not only that I found prices at least 30 to 40% cheaper then AutoZone at Advance Auto oh, and also they had catalytic converters in stock about the same price as you by my on the internet and they've got a good warranty. So you got to check things out are you pay a premium for car parts AutoZone is a place to go when you have no place else to go all of their prices inside the store or Sky High. That's why they're stock does so well on the market
The last battery I bought for my truck was $105. It was an Interstate brand from my local garage. That was about 5 years ago and it's still going strong.
When my battery failed in Amarillo, Texas, got a jump from roadside assistance and went to AutoZone. They didn't have the battery I needed except the premium $200 model, and the associate was clueless besides, I could afford it, but why? I went to Walmart, they didn't have time, so I traded the 10 year old one in, $160, and did it myself in the lot. Too easy.
The prices of Walmart, Sams Club and Costco appears to be the best deals. Sam club only works on tires and batterys. Computerized Battery testing and Michelin tire technicians certified.
Scotty is right on the money, Autozone batteries are WAY overpriced. I picked up a fresh Walmart battery in october rated at 680 CCA and it tested at 731 CCA. The batteries are made in the same factory as the Autozone batteries.
@@lonewanderer3603 again, just because their made by the same company doesn't mean their made to the same standards. Look at the CCA rating on wally world batteries, its lower then everyone else's. You get what ya pay for
From several regretful occasions, I finally learned the hard way that those "Ever Start" slow-cranking then dead rubber stones at Walmart are THE WORST from ANYwhere. Fortunately, I got them back to returns before their Warranties expired so they didn't cost me cash. Just a bunch of jump starts & a few long walks from which I learned more than one lesson......
A battery getting old and losing it's charge can cost you: Your alternator will need to work harder and wear out the brushes sooner. When your starter is dragging it draws amperes, gets hot and it will fail prematurely. Your heater fan motor, wiper motor, power windows and locks are dragging and slowly burning them up. As soon as my battery tests borderline I buy a new battery. I put an Interstate Brand little car battery in my old Bolens riding mower and it lasted 15 years. The MTP types are the best batteries made by Interstate.
I just recently brought a Exide battery at Home Depot recommended by my friend. Works great 3 year warranty cost $109 while duralast was $169. Can’t believe the big price difference.
Unless this has changed since March 2020 Clarios makes there batteries not Exide. Former Advance employee. Rural King sells Exide and they are absolute junk. Advance named Clarios their 2019 vendor of the year.
Speaking of motorcycle batteries... The longest lifetime battery I ever had was 15 years... It was a 2000 Suzuki Bandit and I replaced the battery in 2015. I bought the bike used in 2003. The battery was OEM. First thing I did to the bike once in my garage was install an electrically heated clothing tap. Of course, the tap then doubles as a harness for hooking up a smart trickle charger. The thing was plugged in and maintenance charging the moment it entered the garage from a trip. The bike now has over 100k and it's been all over North America. My pickup truck sits idle most of the time. It has a knife switch on the battery negative terminal. It's also hooked up to a smart trickle charger while it sits. I get quite a bit of life out of my batteries. ;-)
Do not buy a Die Hard battery. I bought one about 10 years ago. Had to return it 7 or 8 times. Got sick of it still under warranty I bought an Interstate. Haven’t had a problem in couple years
Last Winter my battery died. I had forgotten the last time I bought one. I pulled it out and saw the sticker. It was almost 10 years old. That's not too bad. 😊
It's likely the EPA who makes batteries expensive and experience shortages. They have a ton of green recycle rules which require expensive licenses and then "Lead" is like poison to those EPA nerds. They usually are in the way vs. doing any good however, the good they do is reasonable but there is a limit to what they should get involved in, they just haven't figured that out yet.
@@TheMatrixIsReal. bruh, lead mines pollute extremely to the local environment such as the people and fauna. The workers health is at risk both short term and long term. The workers breathe toxic smokescreens that can cause lung problems such as cancer and COPD. I think the lead should be imported to factories in America where Americans work.
@@DNNYYCLR Lead isn’t as bad as it used to be, much safer for the environment and minors. Look how bad lithium mining is, blows everything out of the water. Don’t be a dum(b) hippie.
Costco used to have great batteries and warranties too. They changed a few years back, now batteries are failing sooner, they have less warranty but at least they cost way less, and Costco still is the best to deal with.
If you buy a battery which is "dry charged" i.e. they just poured the acid into it and called it good to go, by all means after you get it home (either installed in the vehicle or just riding in the trunk), take the time to fully charge it on a decent charger (Like a CTEK 8 program MS5) and charge it for however long it takes to get it to 100% (up to 48 hours). The battery will reward you with a great long life....
When I worked in the retail auto parts business, all of our batteries arrived empty. We filled & charged them after the sale was rung up at the cash register.
I’ve always bought from Costco, same Johnson Control manufacturer with a no cost replacement within 3 years. Living in Arizona a battery doesn’t last much longer than 3 years. Consumer Reports does a terrific job in comparing batteries as well as listing the manufacturer of private label batteries.
What you are describing happened to me. Wish I saw this video, 2 weeks ago, I ended up stranded somewhere and end up paying about $180.00 for a replacement battery in a known auto parts store.
Battery shopping today. Walmart $150.00, only have one choice for 2014 Kia Soul. Auto Zone $189.00-$220.00. Battery looking to replace will be 3 years old in 3 months. It was a warranty replacement from dealership with stipulation doesn’t have a warranty. They tried charging me until I said why isn’t this under warranty? Don’t treat the Queen like she stupid. Needless to say that dealership can go pound sand! So have no idea how old battery was when installed since there is no date on it, checked by a mechanic last week. Since this was in my feed, taking it as a sign, start pricing. Thanks Scotty!
Scotty almost got to the truth. Whenever you get a new battery, charge it before you use it! Batteries that are shipped dry or prefilled batteries that have been setting for you to use them ALL need to be charged. I've been told that a battery that is put to use in a partially charged state never gets fully charged. If you want a battery to last much longer, put it on a trickle charger occasionally. Normal driving will not keep a battery fully charged.
@@davidanderson8469Ive charged "new" batteries anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours. Not a bad idea to warm it up before putting it to use if you have the luxury.
Whoever told you that was sick! People shouldn't screw with the mentally challenged. A quick check of the voltage will tell you the state of charge. If its 12v or better, which is should unless its been sitting for >6 months, your fine. If all you do is city driving, or drive like its your father's Oldsmobile, or WFH and don't drive much, then yes throwing it on a charger every once in a while will help it knock down some sulfation.
Just came down to FL and needed to replace my battery in my 2012 Mazda CX-9. New battery was $224 at Advance and $150 at Sam’s Club. Listen to Scotty and shop around!
@@girlonlaptop My parents bought them too and on our Acura 1.6 EL 2000, the battery had lasted 7 years instead of the 8 years and Costco refunded us a bit less than 1/8 of the price of the battery without us asking (it was like 7 years and 2 months)
@uhチュンチュンマル Lol, we have been impressed with those Costco batteries and my parents have always bought them there after the one that came with the car dies and those Costco batteries just last so long
Interstate battery is the way to go. Once you buy it, you get free cleaning , free testing anytime, free refill battery fuild. Pretty much you get full service from them to help keep your battery going a long time
@@robins281 true 👍 I just hate dealing with auto part dealers. Always find a way not to help or say the warranty is pasted so u buy another battery . What happen to warranty u made me feel so good about. Thats why interstate battery help me with my Nissan Altima issue. They look at it least 5 times at no cost ( of course I had a interstate battery) and found the problem. Since then no more battery issues
I guess I'm stupid then. Duralast batteries have been some of the best, longest lasting batteries I've ever bought. Scotty is right on one thing tho, batteries are way over priced.
I go through herds of batteries at work, there are only 2 US companies that build batteries. I bought one at my local parts store that went bad when it was only 6 months old. AZ customer service blows goats! I had all the paperwork but since the store had changed ownership they wouldn’t make good on it. (Same battery brand, same AZ franchise) I felt sorry for the counter-man, I’m sure the “Richard head” manager made him clean up the mess where the battery fell off the counter when he apparently didn’t put in a safe position after I told him what he could do with his company policy concerning batteries sold during the franchise shuffle..... it’s been over 20 years and I haven’t even bought a fuse from those fine folks at A-Z !
@@Zephyrmec I'm really confused? They sold you a battery that fell off the counter? I wouldn't buy the battery and walk out if they tried telling me to keep it. FYI - Talking to a big company in store about changing there policy is a waste of breath and should be taken up with corporate and not a store employee / manager. Those people could care less and just follow company policies. They have no say and can only make suggestions when higher ups come. I always contact corporate and have gotten alot of free stuff from it. Ex - My cats food changed recipe and the company didn't even know. When I sent them an email showing the back of the can ( the calories, nutrition %, and ingredients changed), they sent me a full refund plus a $50 dollar vouchers which was good for every brand they owned. It allowed me to try out a bunch of different food plus I was able to keep the original food since my cat didn't like it and to donate it.
@@raqO1111 I acquired a vehicle last year that has a duralast in it. The previous owner was kind enough to write the date on the battery when it was installed. 06/2017. So it's 5 years old now. And it's still going.
Audi dealer wanted $600 to replace the battery during maintenance. Bought battery at Orileys for $200 and replaced it in 10 minutes. Battery was in the trunk and required 2 sockets. New battery was dirtier than the old one.
Hey Scotty excellent video I have been getting batteries from Wal Mart for years and had no problems. Since they really only carry one type of battery for each kind of car, they don't play the product differentiation game and try to sell you low, mid, and high end ones and get all the mark up. Going to Wal Mart for a battery is like going to a local Gas Station for milk. You might think the grocery store has the best deal on milk but the gas station often only carries one kind with an exclusive deal from a local distributor and if it's not the absolute cheapest, it is close and much better quality. The grocery store raises the price on the good milk because they still need the cheap stuff to sell. Just a little Vermont wisdom as we still have dairy cows up here. Quick battery question Scotty - why is it when you take a battery out of a car, say over night why do you want to avoid keeping it off a concrete floor? In VT we have to put it on the board to avoid killing the battery especially when it's cold. Is there a a good reason for that or is it just a myth?
Got my last battery at Walmart. The value battery was 56$ plus tax plus 12.00 core. The plus battery was 93$ and the maxx was over a 100$. Got 4 years out of my last value battery. Didn't think I would have my 97 f150 that long.
I believe there is some truth but not because concrete sucks the life out of the battery but is colder "not insulated like a board or thick rug". Basically cold does affect the life of a battery.
I have had some good luck with Wal Mart batteries. My 92 Toyota pickup has a battery from 2015, only paid $59. Bought a pricey Dura Last for my wifes van and it only lasted 2 years.
Just bought two new batteries at WalMart last week, 3 yr warranty, Walmart rollback sale - $88.76 each. Both with manufacture dates of 11/20. Auto parts stores in the area wanted $160 and up each.
Why would Walmart hate you? Every Walmart I've checked out sells fresh batteries and I'm sure they're happy when people know it. It might be easier on your back if you get one of those handheld mirrors on a telescoping rod to check the date sticker rather actually pulling the batteries off the shelf. Pretty sure Walmart would be happy to sell you the mirror.
I have to agree with Scotty that Wal Mart is the place to go for the best deal on batteries. Sure there might be some places that are cheaper but wal mart is the most easily accessible to everyone
I have found that if I go to the local Interstate Battery warehouse, I can often get a "blemished" battery which is just as good as the non-blemished ones, but costs less. Good point about checking its age, however.
I bought an Oreillys battery 5 years ago in the spring. By winter, it dies off and wont start my yukon. Granted i have a minor parasitic draw i cant find that eats up the battery, but ive returned the battery and every year. Oreillys tests it and always say it's detective, and they give me a new one.
You should watch Project Farm's test on all the major brand batteries. Most of them are made by the same company and, surprisingly, the Walmart battery was the best overall.
.....he raised a question mark about optima batteries and Scotty already has told us earlier that optima are no longer good batteries since moving to Mexico.
Really depends on how you use your car and if you're traveling on the road a lot consider calling the AAA Battery service. They come to you, check your system and sell you a brand new battery. The best thing is it's warranted for 3 years unconditional and 3 more years prorated. They will come to your location no matter where you are in the USA .. they're roadside assistance providers.
@@davidanderson8469 Yes, but, I discovered that the battery service is not everywhere..... By the way, if you have an RV, they greatly diminished their service.
I used to work at a place that was an interstate dealer. I was able to get great quality batteries for cost, which was around what Walmart would've charged me.
I've had good luck with cheapass Costco and Walmart batteries. Better than the Optima I had in one car for four years and replaced twice under warranty.
Back in the day, Optimas were the best you could get, and the Army started to transition to them. Then the factory was moved to Mexico and now the Army is switching back to lead-acid and using desulfators. Regularly getting 8+ years in construction equipment and trucks.
Just picked up a battery for my granny’s Old Ford. O’Reillys wanted to charge me 120 bucks for their cheapest battery. Called Walmart they had virtually the same battery for 54 bucks.
Not sure what Scotty is talking about. I only buy Duralast gold from Autozone and had one of them last 7.5 years. Maybe now because of Lead shortages things are different. I got one free battery because of a dead cell after two years under warranty. Delco is my second choice since I drive all GM vehicles.
Other great options are Costco and Sam's club. A emergency option if your left out in the boonies is AAA. AAA tech will come and check/test the battery. Replace if necessary with a competitive price.
Easy to return. Mine failed just before the warranty ended. Got 100% money back. Shouldve bought another Costco battery but I was dumb and bought a marked up battery somewhere else.
Don't know if it's still true, I found out 5yrs ago Johnson Controls made Walmart's. I've got very good service out of them. I'm a 1st class master tech from Cat & Yale. Deka makes good batteries. I will find out who makes a lot things before purchasing. Consumer reports test car batteries also. I've got the same experience as Scotty over the years. GREAT JOB Scotty ! 👌👍
Yep...back in those days they called them "Dry Charged" battery and they'd come with a bag of acid or the store would fill it with acid from their bulk storage container etc. BTW, those Walmart batteries are very good ones if you buy their better grade vs. lower grade. Lots of folks experience 6 years with them before replacement.
Thank you Scotty you make a lot of sense. I tell friends and family to test their battery once a year and service their wet battery with distilled water and replace their battery every 4 years or sooner depending on the battery tests but no they don’t listen and call me at 1:30 in the morning because their battery died, yes people are lazy and stupid, I personally replace my battery every 4 years whether the battery is good or bad and never in my 40 years of driving got stuck with a dead battery. Think about it just 1 service call or tow will cost more than a new battery not to mention the inconvenience of missing important appointments or losing pay from your job
I agree 100% with you. I do the same thing. I write on the battery when I install it and in 4 years, it gets replaced regardless if the vehicle is starting alright or not. I have never been stranded either because of a dead battery. I'd hate to be out at 10:00 pm somewhere in the middle of December stuck in a parking lot waiting on AAA to come jump me. Instead I get the battery on my time and change it in my garage with my tools.
If your battery is smaller and you can buy from Costco, do that as they have higher quality products. Do not buy smaller batteries at Walmart, they die too quickly. I went through 3 of their batteries in only 2 years on my Honda Odyssey minivan and they did refuse to honor the warrenty. Bought the next one at Costco and no problems.
In the last 4 years i've had 2 Honda batteries go bad (they're weak batteries and the capacity is way too low) and an Autozone Duralast went bad. Honda will only warranty the battery 1 time, even if you were to get two defective batteries in a short span. Autozone will warranty multiple batteries, but like Scotty said in the video they charge a fortune. Out of the gate the Interstate battery has more cranking and cold cranking amps than the Duralast, and WAY more amps than the Honda brand with the same group number... The capacity is also much larger.. So far this battery (Interstate black top) seems much more healthy than any of the other batteries were when they were new (voltage is often at 13.2 when i turn off the van), and hopefully it lasts longer. But either way, it's somewhere between $150-$200 for a crap Honda batt.. $170 for the Duralast. Only $100 for the Interstate, and Costco is pretty good about warranties and returns. The only cheaper battery i know of is at Walmart. I'd pick it over Honda or Duralast, but i'd rather go with Interstate than EverStart
I was recently able to beat your suggestion. A couple of years ago, thought I was going to sell my car, needed a battery, so I went to a local battery shop & bought a used battery for $40. Didn't sell the car and a few weeks ago, died on me. While I was waiting on a jump I realized it is NOT a maintenace free battery. and yep, fluids were low. AAA came, checked it and said, "yep, you need a new battery". Instead I went to Autozone - only auto store that has it and paid $10.00 for a quart of premix battery acid and water. I dumped the old acid that was left and refilled with new acid. (I did NOT clean it out with baking soda!). Working fine now, "new" battery for $10.00
I only buy batteries and tires at Costco. Best warranties around with no hassles to get it replaced when problems come up. Used to buy walmarts/sams before their quality went down.
My SUV’s battery died, and I went to the local O’Reilly to replace it. They charged me $220. Saw this video and felt like I’d been scammed. Looked it up at Wal-Mart and it was $257… 🤷🏼♂️

The batteries the Walmart and autozone sells come from the same factory. The only thing different is the label. They are both made by Johnson Controls. I know because I am a truck driver and I have picked up and delivered these.
Thank u for that insight 👍🏾
Also Walmart beats the heck out of Autozone's prices. Advance Auto too.
MVP truck driver, I'm a service technician at walmart and was curious how the battery was compared to autozone
Jj
My buddy worked at a battery place. He told me you are tested once a month for lead poisoning. If your levels are too high then you need to work with a protective suit until they go down. Sounds nuts to me they don't wear that stuff all the time but I would imagine getting very hot in summer.
Wow. Very informative and interesting

And now she comes back so you can change the oil and do the brakes.....there's another opportunity if you "fix" them "right"...just sayin'.
A cheap multimeter can solve all your problems.

A battery getting old and losing it's charge can cost you:
Your alternator will need to work harder and wear out the brushes sooner.
When your starter is dragging it draws amperes, gets hot and it will fail prematurely.
Your heater fan motor, wiper motor, power windows and locks are dragging and slowly burning them up.

@@girlonlaptop My parents bought them too and on our Acura 1.6 EL 2000, the battery had lasted 7 years instead of the 8 years and Costco refunded us a bit less than 1/8 of the price of the battery without us asking (it was like 7 years and 2 months)
@uhチュンチュンマル Lol, we have been impressed with those Costco batteries and my parents have always bought them there after the one that came with the car dies and those Costco batteries just last so long
Kirkland car batteries used to be a Consumer Reports best buy. My experience in British Columbia they are now garbage. Stay away!
Interstate battery is the way to go.
Once you buy it, you get free cleaning , free testing anytime, free refill battery fuild.
Pretty much you get full service from them to help keep your battery going a long time
That’s all great if you can find a Interstate dealer anywhere close to you.
@@robins281 true 👍
I just hate dealing with auto part dealers.
I swear on this too. I bet all batteries are treated differently, after production, even though they may all be built the same
I go through herds of batteries at work, there are only 2 US companies that build batteries.
Did you look at the price of an econocraft they are like 69 a peice
I wound pull all the batteries off the shelves and check the dates. Boy Walmart hates me
Why would Walmart hate you? Every Walmart I've checked out sells fresh batteries and I'm sure they're happy when people know it. It might be easier on your back if you get one of those handheld mirrors on a telescoping rod to check the date sticker rather actually pulling the batteries off the shelf. Pretty sure Walmart would be happy to sell you the mirror.
Good, but do they hate you because you didn't put the batteries back?
Regarding batteries I knew things had changed. Your tutorial explains it all. Thanks for the info.
My favorite place for car battery’s
I bought an Oreillys battery 5 years ago in the spring. By winter, it dies off and wont start my yukon. Granted i have a minor parasitic draw i cant find that eats up the battery, but ive returned the battery and every year. Oreillys tests it and always say it's detective, and they give me a new one.
suggestion if i may. as i posted above a simple batter maintainer from harbor freight will keep a fully charged battery charged.
The battery maintainers from harbor freight are junk
You should watch Project Farm's test on all the major brand batteries. Most of them are made by the same company and, surprisingly, the Walmart battery was the best overall.
.....he raised a question mark about optima batteries and Scotty already has told us earlier that optima are no longer good batteries since moving to Mexico.
And Walmart is open late, or used to be 24/7 (Hopefully will be again soon) I always seem to need a battery after 9pm.
Pretty much we are all eating steak at different prices from same cow in central California
Will never buy another battery from Wal-Mart. Been burnt several times. Not worth the trouble.
That's who I use. You can't beat them.
Just teplaced 2 Wal Mart batteries in my powerstoke after 9 years of life. Average cost 9 dollars a year
Not sure what Scotty is talking about.
Never trust auto parts stores as the only place to buy parts which Scotty has taught us.
Costco interstate battery are the cheapest ones I’ve found.
My Costco battery is 8 years old and still working just fine. It was cheaper than other places I checked.
Easy to return. Mine failed just before the warranty ended. Got 100% money back. Shouldve bought another Costco battery but I was dumb and bought a marked up battery somewhere else.
Costco batteries are the best! High turn over, fresh batteries on the shelf, every size available. Best prices, Best return policy. No one competes.
Tell me how I have to go battery shopping soon and Scotty drops this gem right on time. Thank you!
just replaced 124r battery in genisis 2.0 purchased walmart 9/2012, cheap battery lasted 60000 miles and 10 years (Almost}.
Got 4 years out of my last lower grade battery. 56$ plus tax and core. Replaced with the same at Walmart.
Batteries start dying the moment they're activated with acid, so Scotty is right: Don't buy a new battery that is more than two (2) months old.
Instead I get the battery on my time and change it in my garage with my tools.
some things you don't skimp on on your car and that's batteries and alternators. It's a lot cheaper than getting towed
I bought my last battery for my Camry at Walmart for $55.00. So far, it is doing really well. (It has been about 6 months.)
I had an Interstate Battery that lasted 8 years. A serviceable one.
Green top Interstate were really good, the black case ones are junk.
Interstate batteries are $100 at Costco
I’ve heard they are POSs
Recently bought a battery at Home Depot. Way cheaper than an auto parts store.
For lawn equipment?
No a 2012 caravan. Must be a regional thing. All the Home Depot’s in RI have car batteries.
Trippy
A few years ago, Walmart batteries were said to be the best on the market.
The boolet makers have plenty of lead. And brass. And steel. And copper.
It's a reliable supply of reliable primers that they lack.
My SUV’s battery died, and I went to the local O’Reilly to replace it. They charged me $220. Saw this video and felt like I’d been scammed. Looked it up at Wal-Mart and it was $257… 🤷🏼♂️
The folks who would go to Walmart to pay more without checking are “stupid”.
Damn it Scott,at this point if you want no one else to own a car just say that
I came upon your TH-cam channel like a week ago. I can’t stop watching you and you were so full of knowledge. Especially love this one on batteries you’re saving so many people money.
