Vergil is a Half Demon Half Human that is dying in DMC5 in order to maintain himself alive he divided his two sides.
When his human side came to his senses he realized how much of an asshole he was so he named himself V as a codename and then hired Dante (Vergil's Brother) and after that Nero (Vergil's Son) because they are demon hunters, and told them to defest His own Demon Side which he himself called him Urizen.
After Urizen is defeated V fused again with Urizen, and Vergil got revived with full power because Urizen got a shitton of power and vitality while they were separated

Game designers sometimes employ a technique in video game osts where the soundtrack reacts to the player in certain ways. At its simplest it can be the music being muffled when you go underwater at its extremes (like here) the song is written with the intention to ramp up when the game does. It's not static either the programmers have to make it so the song transitions to the appropriate section of the song on beat, with no jarring cut offs and all based on the player's performance.

According to Casey, the composer, the last section of the song was a personal vendetta for him. Vergil as a character means a lot to him personally, so he felt like he had to portray the character the best way he could in that finale. His sadness, loneliness, trauma, desperation for power, all of that is laid bare in that section.

10:42 The in-game theme isn’t 9 minutes, how it works is that the song will start when you get into a fight and it will start playing different parts of the song based on your current style ranking of D to SSS. For example, having an S style rank will play the “I am the storm that is approaching” or “Forsakened, I am awakened” part. They did that also with the other 3 battle themes

So depending on how stylish you're doing in the fights the song changes dynamically. You're doing really good and completely destroying everything stylishly? You're Style rank increases and the music changes to the most hype parts.
You're doing bad, getting hit, running away, not attacking or repeating attacks? That's not stylish so your style rank goes lower and the music dynamically changes to the not so hype parts of the song.
It's a incentive/reward for fighting with style. You do cool stuff so the song adapts.

Great video, love seeing people react to this masterpiece of a theme. To answer some of your questions (in chronological order as I'm watching the video):
Special Edition is simply a version of the game that came out after the main game did for the PS5 and XBSX. It was the first to feature Vergil, the character whom this theme belongs to. However, Vergil (and obviously his theme) can also be bought for the main game, so you don't need the SE to experience them.
Bury the Light is a battle theme, which means it plays in combat arenas where you fight basic enemies (or at least most of them, as there are a few that play ambiance music instead). It is Vergil's theme by default, but you can use it on any character you want.
The version of the song used in the game is shorter than this one, but it doesn't work as you may think it does. Devil May Cry has a mechanic we call "Style Meter". It's basically a ranking system that starts from D and goes all the way to SSS and increases or decreases based on your actions during a combat encounter. If you do varied combos in quick succession, it increases. If you get hit, spam or are too slow, it decreases. The way the music fits in is that depending on your current rank, different parts of the song play. From D-B, the verses and everything else in between are what you hear. On A rank, you get drums and synths starting to build up and finally once you hit S rank and above, the chorus drops. This is how all 4 main battle themes of DMC5 work. And "Special Edition", like I mentioned above, is simply a version of the game that the song was introduced in. It has nothing to do with the song itself.
Vergil wasn't in the anime so it's no surprise you don't remember him. He's Dante's twin brother and is indeed the antagonist of both DMC3 and DMC5. As for the line "I am the storm that is approaching", it's a nod to DMC3 where another character says that phrase word for word.
Victor is indeed the singer and the reason Casey picked him as the vocalist was because he wanted someone who could perform all these different styles you're talking about.
In the "Beyond the Tree" section there are indeed the deeper vocals in the background. As for what they're saying, it's the exact same lines from the previous section. So when you hear "Beyond the Tree", what's sung in the background is "Lurking in the shadows under veil of night". Good ear by the way.
Fun fact: The last part of the song before the outro (the "Bury the light deep within" one) uses the same melody as another song that Casey wrote which is called "Devil Trigger". DT is Nero's battle them and Nero is Vergil's son. So this was Casey's way of "connecting" the themes of the son and the father.

    • @zffrailgun1630
      @zffrailgun1630 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@XNotsoSacredx The entire last part of the song is the DT melody but with a different arrangement. If you want to hear it clearly, look up "Bury the Light x Devil Trigger", where someone simply overlaid the vocals. If you don't want to do that, just start singing "Embrace the darkness that's within me" when "Bury the light deep within" is sung or during the fully instrumental portion of the same part.
And to answer your question, it's an electric guitar.

Casey Edwards is male musical artist who is a huge fan of Devil May Cry and Vergil was his favorite character in the franchise, so he wrote The Bury The Light and did most of the music as well. Also Capcom told him not to use guitars including electric guitars while he was making this theme, but he still nailed Bury The Light, and this theme rocks!!! 🤘🎶

The way these songs are modified in game is that there is a ranking system from D-SSS rank, the unique thing is that the rank will only go up the cooler your ingame combos (series of attack is) and the song that play here correlate to the ranking. For example "i am the storm" starts at S rank or "bury the light deepwithin" which happens at SSS rank (the highest rank in the game). Basically the more that you are owning you're enemies the more cooler the music is if that makes any sense

I think in a lot of ways this is Virgil's "I am" song if you think about it from a disney movie sense. It encapsulates vigils character. He's the main antagonist-ish, and he IS the storm that is approaching as far as the story is concerned. A lot of this is about virgil and his relationship with dante and their mother. In the later half of the song where its the ominous chanting about the tree burning and such I've heard it described as almost a ritualistic chanting to summon or herald virgils approach within the song and the game. The next part afterwards is virgils "arrival".

Special Edition relates to Vergil being a playable character. He is the DLC to regular DMC5 and is automatically included into SE. This? This plays literally *every time* Vergil is in combat aside from boss fights, and it dynamically adapts to how much you're styling on the enemy. And yes, he's *technically* a villain, so his song being dark makes sense. Though it's a contrast since his intentions are dark but his combat style is very bright and flashy, with elements of pure light - Yamato leaves light traces to extend slashes, Beowulf is literally gauntlets of a light demon, and Mirage Edge is a hard light/demonic power sword

  • @MrShellbuster
    @MrShellbuster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah this is a great break down of how the instruments play along. The special edition is the DLC or 'gold' version of the game where you get Vergil as a playable character after you beat the game.
It unlocks his own song for his battle tracks, so the initial build is made for when demons are spawning into the arena, and depending on how well you play, not getting hit and chaining combos, it builds up a letter grade. The higher the grade, the more the song ramps up, which is why there's a couple sudden transitions for the tempo. To be cut and put together cleanly for that purpose.
Hitting the second highest rank during a fight hits the chorus in full volume. There's also a special remixed version for his final boss, fighting his brother which makes the entire thing flow a bit more cleaner.
The song explains his entire story through the game from his own mind set. So it's very self written.

The special edition is the version of the game ! This DLC , added this character on the screen to the playable characters ... He had a dark and sad past and also had some really good and bad defeats and rises ... This song is based on this characters life actually ... He is in pain , he rises , he defeats so bad ( listen at the almost end , the vocalist just speaks so tired and you can feel the pain ) , he rises again and thats it ! And also this music just plays whenever you are fighting as this character ... When battle starts , music kicks in !

This is the actual “single” version. I bought it myself thru iTunes. This basically describes Vergil’s lived experience and it’s effects on his motivation and personality. He’s the polar opposite of the lighter hearted , more human twin, Dante. Virgil and Dante’s life paths were separated by the events that caused the death of their mother at a very young age, and they developed differently as a result. Virgil pursues power because he wants to claim his throne in the demon world that was once his father’s. Dante doesn’t think that’s a good idea, so they always clash. And Virgil has a son, Nero, that he meets and fights during the game. This song, imo, is supposed to reflect his passion beneath his stringent self control.
I’ve been bumping this on repeat for a couple weeks now, it’s a piece of art!

So the thing about Devil May Cry's music is that the Boss fights have their own music that plays. Any other time the character's boss (theme) music plays as you slaughter ranks of demonic cannon fodder. It's dynamic music that changes as your fighting becomes more Stylish and your progress from D to SSS. Rank S is when the chorus kicks in and stays as long as you have above S rank.

    *heavy spoilers*
Vergil and Dante (main character in anime) are twin brothers. Long story short:
Family gets attacked by demons for plot reasons, (human) mother is able to protect Dante but not Vergil (she dies before she reaches him) so he awakens demon half (demon father) and seeks power to protect himself as he thought mother abandoned him. the demons basically torture him trying to kill him as his demon half makes it so he's hard to kill so heavy trauma. His main line is "I need more power".
They fight. A lot. This is more or less his redemption arc (or rather, a therapy session with fists, swords, and guns + oh sh** I have a son that literally punches some sense into the brothers) which is probably why you get these cool major sections from the vocals, but still a bad ass character who keeps his edge and one of the coolest and most iconic antagonist. Probably get a lot of complaints for the short version but think this gives enough context for the song. Apologies if someone beat me to the explanation. So, yeah. try listening to vocals with that context should give you an extra layer.

10:59 In the game, this theme plays only if Virgil is the boss against whom you fight for Dante or Nero, the question is: why should such a track go 9 minutes? Because Virgil is unpredictable for the first time, you don’t know his attacks and how he will behave, so the first meeting is really delayed and as I found out in this song the whole story of Virgil is retold

Vergil is a playable character in this game. This song plays during every enemy encounter. The game employs a stylish ranking system, starting at rank D, then C, B, A, S, SS, and finally, SSS. At rank D the song employs very few sounds and no vocals, but as you increase your stylish ranking, more sounds will be included, and if you get your Stylish ranking up to S, the song plays in its entirety, including the vocals. So basically, the better you fight, the better the song, encouraging you to get that ranking up.

Im no DMC lore expert here but let me explain what I think I know without any major spoilers for DMCV. Vergil is the twin brother of Dante and they are both the sons of a legendary demon named Sparda who sealed off the Hell from the human world and their mom was a human. When they were young their house burned down and when their mother went to look for Vergil she died in the fire. Dante grew up to be a formidable demon hunter, and Vergil just as powerful but he blamed himself for his mother's death because he wasnt strong enough to save her. For this reason he resented his human side and considers it weak. So he searches for power, always trying to become stronger by any means necessary and I think at this point of the story he's sort of forgotten why. This struggle of human versus demon within his heart, the memory of all that he loved and wanted to protect. Vergil had to Bury the Light in search of power and in his mind theres no turning back, theres no coming home.
I could be wrong on parts of this but its what i got after playing DMCV and looking into the rest of the series. This song is steeped in symbolism and its because Casey's favorite character IS Vergil so he really wanted to do him justice and by the gods did he do it.
If you liked this one try Devil Trigger by the same guy. Its Nero's battle theme from the same game.

12:25 To be fair, Vergil wasn't in the anime, so people wouldn't know him unless they got into the games or surrounding material. I haven't seen the anime myself, but I've seen that Dante fights a guy that's supposed to be reminiscent of Vergil, but that's it. My impression is that the anime is supposed to be a slice of life during the time Dante was at his peak brooding state, after the events of the third and first games (in that order), when Vergil wasn't around. Otherwise, the whole DMC world is a very different vibe when he's lightened up enough to be a comedic memelord.

The “Special Edition” refers to the game, not the song.
Bury The Light plays when you fight as Vergil, and it’s a dynamic song, similar to MGR where certain parts cut out. When your combo rating changes, the game seamlessly plays a different part of the song depending on the combo rating. Starting out, it’s just the vocals of the final chorus. Then when your combo changes, it adds instruments and changes to a different part of the song.

If you’re still wondering about the meaning of the song, here’s a brief background. Devil May Cry’s main character is Dante who is a half demon who hates other demons and owns a business where people hire him to fight demons. He has a twin brother named Vergil who embraces his demonic side and tries through various means to become more powerful. This song is Vergil’s combat music, and it shows how he tries to suppress the human within him while becoming more demonic.

    Probably already answered, but still:
Vergil is the main antagonist in Devil May Cry 5. Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition is the re-release of the game with extra content. Vergil being a playable character is some of that extra content. The playable characters in DMC5 have their own battle themes. This song is Vergils battle theme. And these battle themes are dynamic. DMC is a character action game, where you perform combos and high damage attacks. And the better you are, the higher style ranks you achieve during the fight. With each higher style rank the song opens up new layers. So the beginning of this song is what you hear during the first style rank. That remains the same until you progress. When you open up a new style rank for example the singing kicks in. With another style rank other lyrics of the song kick in, which are faster and harder. At the highest style rank you unlock the full song and feel like the ultimate badass.

Special Edition: Re-release of the original game with additional content, namely Vergil as a playable character and Turbo Mode, a modification for the game that ups the speed of everything by 20% I believe to make gameplay look cooler. DMC3 did it. DMC4 did it YEARS after the original game's release, adding Vergil, Lady, and Trish to the cast. And now DMC5 did a Special Edition.
When this plays: It's Vergil's Battle Theme. Every time you get into a fight that doesn't have its own theme (bosses or minibosses) while playing as Vergil, this plays. I should also note that all the character Battle Themes are dynamic. That is, the song goes through phases based on what's happening in gameplay (your Style rating to be more specific). This is the full, uncut 9 minute version of the song, but the version in game sounds notably different because of all the cutting on top of a new section that isn't in this version (that plays when you get to an "A" Style rating). There's also a few edits of the song that play in-game such as the one that played in the Release Trailer for the game that's also used in the final boss fight of Vergil's campaign.

  • @banditbro25
    @banditbro25 2 ปีที่แล้ว

A thing to note with Bury the Light, this song pretty much hints and points out shit related to the character with this song, Vergil.
He's hurt on the inside due to his past and came originally to the thought of "Might controls everything, without it, how can you protect others... Muchless yourself?" And he held this mentally until the end of DMC 1 (Timeline wise) when he's banished to the demon realm by his own brother. That broke him free mentally from his possession he was under and he knew what had to be done to save himself from dying, he separated himself from his humanity and created, using the Yamato (his sword), his two truths, the demon Urizen and the Human V. V then learned and realized Vergil fucked up and wanted to fix this, that his insatiable urge for more power has led him to slaughter countless humans to lead to him (Urizen) getting more power. Near the climax Urizen and V reform Vergil as you see him, gaining only the best qualities of both entities while removing any issues (The familiars V uses which symbolize his trauma in the past) to lead to him becoming his peak, as the game calls him "Vergil: The Alpha and Omega".
This song shows His power, his pain and his prideful show of everything he does as unlike most DMC characters, he ONLY is playable in special editions, and it's a power trip as you do it since, to sum it up, he just fucks.

    Spoilers:
Vergil is a character who has been suffering since he was about 8. He, Dante, and their mother were attacked by demons sent by Mundus. The demon who the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda (Dante and Vergil's dad) had sealed away 2000+ years ago. Vergil was outside alone when he was attacked, alone and scared he called out for someone to help him. However, sadly, no one came. He was left to think that he was abandoned by his brother and mother. Desperate to live, he summoned the Yamato* and destroyed every single demon he layed his eyes on. Thinking that the only way for him to survive from this point onwards was to obtain as much power as he could.
Vergil then spent around the next 9-10 years of his life wandering the world to locate the power Sparda had left behind. Eventually, he arrived at the city of Fortuna, a city that Sparda had defended once long ago. The island city is run by the cult the Order of The Sword who worshiped Sparda as a god. Vergil didn't learn that much about the whereabouts of his father's sealed power, but he did sleep with a woman there and got here pregnant with his son Nero.
After leaving Fortuna, he eventually met a man named Arkham who claimed to have knowledge of where Sparda's power was sealed. They allied with each other to resurrect the demon gateway Temen-Ni-Gru. One of the pieces needed to open the portal to hell was the amulets Vergil and Dante were given for their 8th birthday's*. This led them to eventually cross paths. However, since Dante had sworn to eliminate all demons and Vergil was looking to open a portal to hell in order to gain more power, they ended up fighting. Vergil beat Dante easily and took his amulet only to give it back, claiming that he could get it back anytime he wanted.
A year later, Vergil asks Arkham to visit Dante in order to request that Dante come meet him. Temen-Ni-Gru then rises from the earth, and at the top, Vergil waits for Dante. When Dante does reach the top, they clash again. During their fight, Vergil asks Dante why he doesn't seek out power, Dante says it's because he doesn't like him.* Vergil wins this fight as well, claiming the amulet and turns to leave but not before stabbing Dante with the Rebellion. That awakened Dante's dormant demonic powers and unlocked his Devil Trigger form. Vergil is persuaded by Arkham to leave Dante behind so that they can finally open the gateway to hell.
On their way through the tower, Vergil asks Arkham why he's keeping Lady (the girl Dante meets multiple times throughout his journey up the tower) alive. Arkham isn't able to respond before Vergil stabs him, claiming that his "pesky fatherly love"* is keeping in the way of him becoming a true devil. Vergil leaves Arkham to die from his wounds and makes his way into the main chamber.
He performs the ritual only to find it to not work. Then Dante arrives and challenges Vergil to another fight. The brothers clash again, and this time, Vergil doesn't sweep the floor with Dante. Lady then arrives and attacks the two brothers, and it is revealed that Arkham survived his stabbing. Arkham completes the ritual, then sends Vergil, Dante, and Lady flying of the platform.
Later on, when Dante is fighting Arkham. Vergil shows up to reclaim his power. He and Dante then team up to fight Arkham and beat him easily. They even use their childhood phrase "Jackpot" when they finish Arkham off. The amulets and Force Edge* then fall deeper into the underworld. Vergil and Dante fight AGAIN this time over their amulets as both are needed to obtain Force Edge's dormant power. This time, Dante beats him. Vergil not willing to accept defeat, grabs his amulet, and jumps off the edge. Falling deeper into the underworld, refusing Dante's help.
After reaching the lower ends of the underworld, he finds Mundus. He attempts to fight him but is easily defeated. He is then tortured and corrupted by Mundus, turning him into Nelo Angelo.
Vergil was in this state of subservience for the next 10 years of his life. Until Dante comes to Mallet Island to kill Mundus. During the events of the first DMC game, you fight Vergil/Nelo Angelo three times. Nelo Angelo wins the first fight. However, when he goes to finish Dante off, he sees his amulet, which awakens his dormant memories as he begins to wrestle with Mundus over control of his body. The next time they meet, Vergil takes off his helmet, hoping that Dante will recognize him. Sadly, he doesn't, and Vergil loses once more and dissappear in a flurry of blue flames dropping his amulet. Only then does Dante realize that it's his brother.
Vergil would eventually free himself from the demon world and Mundus's influence. He then set out to reclaim Yamato and finally beat Dante. Yamato, at this point, has been absorbed into Nero's Devil Bringer arm. So Vergil eventually reaches Nero's house where he and his friend Nico are working on repairing a truck so that Nero can expand his devil hunting business. After Nico leaves, Vergil enters the garage, and Nero's Devil Bringer, which reacts to members of the same bloodline, starts glowing. Vergil then rips off Nero's arm and changes it into Yamato. He then opens a portal and teleports away. Vergil then uses the Yamato to separate his human half from his demon half, believing his humanity was the source of his weakness.
I'm gonna skim over most of DMC 5's plot, but in a nutshell.
Vergil's human half V and his three familiars, which are manifestations of Vergil's trauma as Nelo Angelo. Hire Dante and Nero to defeat the demon half of Vergil (Urizen) so that V and Urizen can reunite to become Vergil once more.
Throughout DMC 5 and the Vision's of V Manga. V learns about the value of compassion and learns that it's okay to ask for help, and it's okay to trust people. When V was unable to defeat a strong demon and Nero helped him beat it and saved his life. V opened up to Nero about his insecurities and regrets. Nero was V's savior, and Nero was willing to help V reach Urizen because it was the right thing to do, not because he had to. V grew to become a better person, Urizen, however, didn't. Urizen still believed that humanity was weak and demonic powers would solve all his problems. So he was incapable of understanding why and how he lost to Dante again.
So when V did the final blow to Urizen and reached Vergil's inner conciseness. We see that Vergil is just a scared, traumatized child who threw his humanity away because he believed that it would cause him to die. V, however, argued that Vergil abandoning his humanity made him weaker.
When Vergil is reborn at the climax of the game, he's not the same person that he was when he split himself. The growth V got he kept. Dante doesn't know that, so he attacks Vergil. Dante, though, is pretty worn out from fighting Urizen. Vergil doesn't believe that besting Dante while he's this worn out isn't good enough for him. So he tells Dante to get stronger and uses the Yamato to teleport away but not before thanking Nero for helping him. Vergil stands a top of the Qilphoth* ,reflecting on his decision, wondering if he made the right choice.
Dante and Vergil ended up fighting AGAIN (what is this like the 6th time??👁👄👁). This fight will settle their dispute and prove which one of them were right. Nero objected to their conflict, pointing out how stupid their reasons for fighting each other was. Vergil is now faced with the one opponent he didn't want to fight, so he tries and fails to get Nero to stand down.
After beating them, both Nero manages to convince them to put their rivalry aside to save the world.
Vergil now has a family and is able to move on from his origins. Though no matter how hard Nero tries, he'll never be able to break Dante and Vergil's rivalry.
    Notes:
Yamato's purpose is to separate man from demon. It also has the ability to cut through space.
The two amulets that Dante and Vergil were given are the two split halves of the Perfect Amulet.
Lady is Arkham's daughter. Also, the reason Vergil even agreed to team up with Arkham in the first place is because Arkham sacrificed his wife for demonic power.
The ritual Sparda performed to seal off the demon world required his own blood, the Perfect Amulet, the blood of a mortal priestess and his own power was sealed away to destroy the link between the human and demon worlds. Lady is a desendant of that mortal priestess and was the thing Vergil was missing to complete the ritual since he was unaware of it.
Force Edge without the two amulets has no demonic power accessible to the user.
Yamato had fused with Nero's Devil Bringer during DMC 4 after he had a vision of Vergil asking him what his dying soul was looking for. Nero had just been impaled and was desperate to save Kyrie, his girlfriend from danger.
If you made it all the way down here, I just want to thank you for reading, and have a good day. :)

Song is heavily inspired by BFG Division by Mick Gordon and Mick Gordon apparently gave Casey Edwards one of his first jobs

It says Special Edition because in DMC5, you play as Nero, Dante and V. In the Special Edition you play as Vergil through every level again with only cutscenes at the beginning and the end of the game unlike the original story

This is Vergil's song that plays whenever a battle happens ingame, Vergil is in the base game the final boss, but in the special edition of DMC V you can play throu the game as Vergil, this is his song

i agree, but the final boss music is a modified version of Devil Trigger (one of the protagonist's battle song)

good thoughts. don't apologize for pausing and commenting, that's the point of the video. if I wanna listen to the song uninterrupted, I'd just do that.

if you have the time look up the lore to this game. it will help give context to this song. this game series started off as a resident evil game but soon became something much more.

Hello! idk if you have heard of payday 2 "break the rules", but if you haven't I greatly recommend it! It gives the same empowerment vibes as this song and I would love to see your reaction!

Don't bother with anyone who gets mad at you pausing. That's the point of a reaction. If they want uninterrupted music they should go to the original song.
    Liked and subbed!!!

What makes it the special edition is actually the fact that vergil wasn't playable until it's release. He didn't had this banger as his theme either.
And it kinda plays the 9 minutes while you normally fight, with the exception of bosses, because some of them also have really good themes. The music changes and adapts to how well are you playing the game, but at the end, the music plays, fully as you fight the final boss.
