This is the most fun track of all DMC games in my opinion, it acts as sort of a core track for all of DMC 3, you'll hear sections of it littered through the game in different sections and serving different functions for the story which is why it's so "busy". Sometimes the cherry picked sections are mixed a bit different but after hearing it enough times it kinda becomes fun to "where's Waldo " which bits are placed where and how they're adjusted or used throughout the game, at least in my opinion.

The main character, Dante, and his brother, Vergil, are half-human and half-devil. At 8 years old their home was attacked by demons - their mother managed to hide Dante away but was killed looking for Vergil. Vergil had to fend for himself outside the family home, believing that he'd been abandoned and his whole family was dead.
This song is basically Dante's theme and ties into his personality. Dante is the Red Oni in the classic Red Oni/Blue Oni storytelling trope. He's free-spirited, energetic, fun-loving, is generally goofy, and even wears red clothes to push the trope further in your face. In contrast, his brother Vergil is the Blue Oni - he's cold, serious, disciplined, authoritarian, and wears a blue jacket.
Dante is ashamed of his devil heritage because it was pretty much the reason his family got attacked, he doesn't like abusing his powers. Part of the lyrics for this song are "Steal a soul for a second chance, but you will never become a man" - saying that he will never truly be human. Vergil on the other hand embraces his devil side, always searching for more power - the power to prevent something like his incredibly traumatic childhood from ever happening again.
Compare the lyric "Bless me with your gift of light" in Devils Never Cry to the lyric "Bury the light deep within" in Vergil's theme. There's a running theme through the series of heritage and what it means to each brother. The lighter voice in the song is probably his human half while the grittier voice is his devil half.

It's worth saying that while they adhere to the Red/Blue Oni archetype, they are much more yin and yang. Dante represents the yang side - he's light, loves to poke fun and joke around, choosing to take things less seriously. But he has an inner side that feels heartbreak over the idea that he lost his brother, the idea that he shares a heritage with the creatures that killed his mother. The reason why he is upset at the end of DMC3 is because he believes that he will never see Vergil again, and he tries to hide his tears by saying "it's only the rain." Vergil, on the other hand, can represent "yin." He is cold, aloof, motivated and withdrawn. However, that attitude is an adopted persona meant to hide his more lighthearted and fun loving side - it was BOTH of the brothers that used to mess around as children, yelling "Jackpot" because they thought it sounded cool. He often has little one liners of his own, showing that he still has that quick wit that Dante does as well.

@@ApexGale That in itself is actually a core element of the red oni/blue oni trope in and of itself. The loud and brash one is the one who has the 'calm heart' in reality and becomes level-headed when under pressure, while the calm and collected one is the one who loses his cool and lets that calm exterior fall when backed into a corner.

A couple of people have already explained the meaning of the dual-vocals in the second part of the track, but something they've missed to an extent is the context of when the song plays, which I saw you ask about, so...
The song first appears in the opening of the game, where Dante and Vergil's battle is foreshadowed, but it cuts right when the opening chorus is about to end.
The second time it plays is after Dante and Vergil's first battle; Dante's defeated, but awakens his devil blood, and so the electronic metal (or demonic) part of the song plays for the first time now that Dante is embracing his devil half.
And the final time it's played is during the game's ending credits. It's also the first and only time when you hear the song to completion. The human vs demonic vocals play at the same time, because Dante has accepted both his human and demonic halves as co-existing. Equal in power.
It's also played as a leimotif during a lot of the game; most notably, an all-orchestral arrangement is what plays during the final battle with Vergil (a character who represents a blind devotion to the demonic side of their family) as a sort of thematic counter-point to Vergil's demonic side. It's basically the music telling the audience that Vergil is wrong and that humanity is as strong as demon-kind, and that Dante's (AKA: you) are gonna prove it by slapping him with nunchucks and rocket launchers for 8 minutes.

This seems late, but when I fought Vergil two - three times and those times I fought him, I didn't use my DT (Devil Trigger) only until vergil activated his DT is when I would activate Dante's DT, even though I have little brothers who act similar to Dante while I'm the more serious, calm brother but,
Even as a kid that played DMC3 on the PS2 I knew the relationship between the brothers were Yin and Yang but when Lady asked Dante if he was crying and then he denied It? I felt that at my core, because even though we're brothers we couldn't possibly hate one another, no matter how angry and upset we are with each other.

The final bit you're talking about; the two voices kinda conflicting with each other. It's because Dante (the main protagonist) is half human and half demon. And he is conflicted about his own identity because he hates demon for killing his parents but at the same time it's within him and he has to accept that side of his father (which is a demon). In contrary to him, his brother is obsessed with his father's side and wants to reject his humanity so he could never be as weak as the night when his parents got killed.

Dante and his brother Vergil are both half human half devil. Mother killed by devil for their father eloping with her. Dante embraces his human side as a way to still enjoy life and protect the life his mother lived, but feels the pull of hating what he is. Vergil embraces his devil side as a way to avenge what his mother lived for because he believes you need power to protect and a human cannot protect themselves, but feels the gentle comfort of his human side letting him know it's ok to live.
Their dynamic is rather good, as a means justify the ends vs ends justify the means on a scale where you are responsible for making that decision.

That part of the song hit me like a freight train the first time I heard it. All those feels came back, particularly the waterfall finale of Devil May Cry 3. Being able to play as Vergil in that game's Special Edition was the best part and that ending is just brutal after you realize how great of a character Vergil actually is.
The only thing I could picture is Dante reaching out, only to have a lightning-fast "no" coming from Yamato slicing across his palm as Vergil falls into the void.
      They nailed that game's conclusion.

This whole song plays over the end credits but the melody of the clean singing is used as a liet motif for strong moments of conflict throughout the game. Such as the lead character Dante being nearly killed by his brother or the lead supporting character killing her father. That melody is also iterated on throughout almost like score music for a movie.

This is the battle theme and also Dante's theme for DMC3.
Dante is half-human half-demon. At this point of the series he loathes his demon side. He has a lot of anger and sadness but he covers it up with crudeness and sarcasm.
The more scream singing parts of the song are what he presents himself as. Or at least what he tries to present as. It also represents sort of his violent demon side. The softer singing I always interpreted as what he actually feels inside that he tries to hide. Especially given the lyrics.

I call it the OG because he has another theme from DMC5 called "Subhuman", fan consensus is pretty mixed on that one though so I'd be interested to see which one you prefer.

The booduhduhduh you were talking about is the sound of enemies appearing. Also people talk about Dante and his demon side but he had that figured out long before in the manga. He's more struggling with the legacy of his dad and living with the same ultimate power but not doing anything with it like his dad.
In the beginning he struggles against Vergil because Vergil found a purpose for being stronger but once Dante finds his is when they become even. The game ends with him accepting that purpose his father had before him where Vergil planned on using that legacy without a care for anything.
Anyways the first part plays when we're being told about their dad. The second part plays when Dante awakens. I don't think the final part plays until the full song is played for the credits which we play through after the Devil (spoiler) cries.
Also this songs is apart of the deluxe upgrade for DMCV and has the same adaptive transitioning as the other songs in the game. Meaning if you do something cool it'll start playing the last part and if you don't it'll keep you in the first half.

So about the voices in the song: Dante the protagonist of the series is the son of Sparda (a demon) and Eva (a human). That makes him a half human half demon hybrid (along with his brother the dude in Bury The Light), the multiple voices in the song are believed to be his human side and his demon side, which during the time the game is taking place he has no control of it and neither have fully realized what he was.

In my opinion, it's the best final boss music ever created in history. It complements the storyline perfectly, blending elements of tragedy, epicness, farewell, and excited to drive the plot forward.
I love how they reused the music in different parts of the game, giving listeners a sense of familiarity while still feeling fresh. After going through all the hardships to complete the game, they combine all these familiar tracks into a brand new ending, evoking memories of the effort put in to overcome various challenges.
    It's truly insane music!

This is awesome since I just recently beat DMC3 for the first time so it's cool to see someone else's blind reaction to stuff from it so soon. I'm absolutely loving your reactions and breakdowns of these video game OST's!! I was wondering if you were thinking of doing anything from the FF7 games, more specifically One Winged Angel. It's pretty relevant since they've been remaking that game and One Winged Angel is ICONIC. It would be cool if you did the three major versions of it since they all released at different times and are very different from one another. They are long so it would probably be like a 3 video series but it would be incredible to see what you think of them. I remember you mentioning you like "foreboding orchestral pieces" so these would definitely fit that description. If you do decide to react to them down the line, the order would be One Winged Angel (original game), One Winged Angel: Advent Children (the movie version), then One Winged Angel Rebirth (the Remake version).

It’s widely known that the angelic music is Dante’s humanity and then the sudden drop and demonic roaring vocals are Dante slaying demons for the sake of the humans

  • @oggrim2824
    @oggrim2824 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Angels and Demons. Duality. You play as Dante, a half demon who slays demons. He's a good person, but he's still a demon. He has a twin brother, Vergil, who embraces his demon side more where Dante embraces his humanity more. Dante's mother was human and his father was a demon. In general, there's a lot of duality at work, which is reflected in the song.
The song plays as you fight, in the intro, in the ending credits fight, etc.

I guess the best way to describe the reasons for each piece is to say that the reverance the angelic ethereal sound is Dantes fathers power surging inside Dante and the growling and fast paced guitar is Dantes personality clashing or battling each other. You could say Dante is rebelling against his destiny or finding harmony with the destruction of his life. One thing is for sure though the devil power from Dante's father is awakening inside him and its up to Dante to grasp it and control it.

Some more context, at the end of the game Dante dehumanizes himself by saying devils never cry, in another game he says the same thing while crying, acknowledging he's not just another demon. I believe the human voice is speaking about his family tree, his father being blessed by the water, the green leaf being his human mother and his human counterpart.

''Felt like a shooting star''. That's the correct tone since while that part is playing, Dante is jumping from the top of a huge tower, killing demons in the air with his guns and sword. At some point, he's falling so fast that he's igniting himself with the friction. That's one of the most amazing moments in the franchise: when he has awakened his demonic powers right after fighting -and losing to- his brother, Vergil.

The crowded different sounds have a meaning, it's the conflict Dante has in the game, doing the right thing but also transforming in a devil for the first time. Also the conflict he has with his twin brother Virgil, who is his total opposite. I love that part the most.

not to go into hyper specific details. This game is about the main characters brother opening a portal to hell, and in the end, he stops the scheme, but cannot save his brother.
This track plays during an interactive credits scene where you kill the straggler demons on earth. He kinda masks his emotions by having fun killing the demons, but is clearly sad over the loss. That's why we have the 2 styles overlapping.

I see you recently hearing ost game music too.
Well just need to know. Persona series especially 3,4,5 is the one of the game with the best ost. The 4 series of this game i love all the OST tho it's just my BS opinion since i love that game so much.
But it's true that Persona series well known for their good OST. You can search that on internet.
So just saying you can check that out.
My personal taste is on Persona 4 so i'm so happy if you do the 4 first. Which ost that i most love quite hard to say that since each of them has it's own thing that i like. But i recommended you to react the Poem for Everyone Soul first. Why?, since this song is probably the ICONIC song that use since the first series until now the fifth series.
So from persona 1-5 this song already been there but there's some change for the song, from persona 1 and 2 to 3-5. The most popular is 3-5. So The Poem For Everyone Soul more like song from 3-5.
Kind a confusing. But not really. If you search it it Will always showing from the 3-5 version. And that was the best version for me atleast and i think the most people like this as well since this was the most popular one.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I believe the only time that the song plays from start to finish uninterrupted or re-edited is during a credit sequence.
The composition is very indicative of the game its self, in that it has a 3 act structure, the organ section plays over the intro of the game but gets cut off before the industrial metal section and shows a vision of the main characters defeat/demise.
The metal section makes its appearance at the start of mission 8/20 after which the main character has suffered a loss, but due to circumstances has a new level of demonic power, it plays to him "taking the L" but realising he feels stonger and deciding to cut loose in one of the most hype cutscenes my child self ever saw growing up. Heavy nostalgia bias.
And then I believe that the final combined section only plays during that credit sequence at the end.
This game was very formative for me.
