The fucking Vigilance of you Casey my god anyone weither be known or not and you'll see it. Lol Not knocking it but definitely impressed with the motivation it gives. (Had to make the joke, sorry not sorry)
Vergil is quite an interesting character. His father was a demon named Sparda who was the right hand of the demon emperor Mundus, who invaded the human world to conquer and enslave humanity. While his father initially followed orders, in time Sparda grew to love the humans and betrayed demon kind, sealing away the emperor he served and severing the link between the world before protecting humanity for 2000 years, after which he met Eva, a normal human woman he fell in love with and had twins with, the elder Vergil and the younger Dante. By the time the twins were 8 years old, Sparda had died and Mundus sent demons to kill them all. While both brothers survived, Dante was hidden by their mother while Vergil had to fight for his life. In this moment, Vergil became consumed by two thoughts; "why did my mother save Dante over me" not realising she had died searching for him, and "if i had been stronger, she would still be alive." Vergil vowed to gain more power so that no one he cared about would ever suffer again. However, a decade later Vergil had become cold. Being alone and obsessing over power, his goal had become twisted. Now, power was more important than anything or anyone. There was one person he cared about in that time, but he abandoned them without much thought when his search for power pointed him in a different direction. He sees his humanity as weakness, and so he rejects it. When he meets Dante again in DMC3, its only to claim Dante's half of an heirloom from their mother left them, an amulet, so he can claim his fathers power, because in his eyes, it's his birthright. Even though he initially beats Dante, come their final confrontation he loses despite holding his fathers sword, which holds his power, not because he's weaker or doesn't want it more than Dante, but because Dante, who at the start hated and blamed all demons for the death of his mother (in a mirror of Vergil) thus hating his father, himself and Vergil, has grown beyond this childish hatred and accepted his father's legacy to protect mankind. At the end, Vergil falls into hell and refusing Dante's outstretched hand, leaving the younger twin to mourn his bothers death. But unfortunately, Vergil didn't die. Rather, he was found by Mundus, the Emperor his father betrayed and imprisoned, and in his weakened state Vergil isn't just beaten, he's obliterated and humiliated. From there, Mundus brainwashes and enslaves Vergil, making him the demon knight Nelo Angelo, general to the demon that murdered his mother. 10 years later in DMC1, Mundus forces Vergil to battle Dante who, not recognising his brother, kills him an only realising what he's done after Vergil's half of their mothers amulet. Vergil is then trapped in a limbo of death and life. His corpse is used to create an army of demonic knights for a cult worshiping his father until, finally, he manages to get free. But, after decades of enslavement and defeat, he is literally falling apart both in body and mind. So in a desperate attempt to survive, he literally cuts out everything he hates about himself, his weakness, his trauma, his memories of enslavement, and his humanity, into a person leaving him only with power, the desire for more power, and the desire to beat Dante. However, when this personification of everything Vergil hated about himself, who calls himself V, sees what this makes Vergil into, Urizen, he is horrified, disgusted and terrified. Urizen goes to gain the power to kill Dante by slaughtering an entire city, while V does everything in his power to stop it, even asking Dante to help, because as much as V also wants to beat Dante, he doesn't want it like that. Through V, Vergil is able to reconnect with his humanity and, when V and Urizen finally recombine into Vergil, he's no longer the power obsessed monster he once was. He's matured and is able to accept that his mother died trying to save him and that he has something to protect in his newfound son Nero, the result of that one person he cared about all those years ago. This song tells that all. The temptation of power, his rejection of humanity, his isolation, his conflict between his parentage, all of it. That's why this song is perfect for him.
This is a perfect example of motivation, I commend you. Thank you for understanding that has happened. I'll be gone but you'll always have a part of me with you with this like... Now, I have some unfinished business to take care of
@@firerath Don't feel bad. Reading this essay made listening to Bury the Light better. I'm sure you're familiar with the DMC video essay and analysis community? Your essay can fit well into a TH-cam video with some additions.
“Composer nails Virgil’s backstory and character from a single song without playing any of the 20 years worth of DMC games like the rest of us.” Damn, dude.
I mean… every single person I’ve seen reacting to it has been able to do that…. The song is just flat out beyond incredible, there is NO a question what this character is about and the motivations he has, and what he has been through, from the song Bury the Light.
Your read of this is pretty much spot on: The character is Vergil, the son of a powerful demon and a human woman. As a symbol of this legacy he carries the Yamato, his father's sword that is capable of cutting literally anything, even space, which of course combined with his demon powers makes him a "bringer of destruction" as you put it. He is the twin brother of the main protagonist, Dante, and a recurring antagonist in the DMC series, but as you said, he's not necessarily evil. They're more rivals than enemies. The whole "legacy overtaking him" is a part of the plot of Devil May Cry 5: After being defeated in the last game , he saved himself by splitting his human and demon sides using the Yamato. The human side becomes one of the protagonists and the demon side, which lacks all of his human empathy and only has his desire for power, becomes the main antagonist and launches a massive invasion of demons into the human world. At the end of the game, after the demon side is defeated, the human half willingly fuses with it and Vergil is reformed. He then becomes the final boss with Bury The Light as his boss track. After the protagonists fighting him and him realizing he has a son, he walks into the demon horde to fix the problems he's caused. The end credits are him and Dante fighting each other while slaying hordes of invading demons. It's pretty epic.
@@AtlasBenighted *Something I dunno that was actually changed or not: Technically the final boss music for the protagonists fighting Vergil was Silver Bullet, a remix of Devil Trigger. However, there was a DLC where you play as Vergil, in which this song, Bury the Light, is slightly changed up and you fight Dante.
Like others said, Casey Edwards was under constraints from Capcom to not have electric guitar in the verses. So what you're hearing is bass. Sick, heavy, gnarly bass
Also, there's a really good podcast interview by Alex Moukala with the composer and they get in depth about Bury the Light. There's one section where they discuss how Capcom explicitly said no guitar, so the composer did everything in his power to make a synthetic version himself to get basically the same effect as a work around. I definitely recommend giving it a listen!
@@Priceluked probably for the feeling a guitar (electric guitar) tends to invoke. They wanted something for Vergil and Vergil isn't like Dante, a cool rocker, he's a more refined person
You gotta listen to "Devils Never Cry" from the third game, it shows off Dante (the protagonist) really well. The duality of being a half demon and a relationship with his demon father while being a badass fight theme.
@@ThatManWasTheRyback nahhh fam people were destroying their throats with "bless me with your gift of light" and "leaves are falling" way before dmc5 came out
I'd honestly put Bury the Light right up there with Devils Never Cry as the 2 best songs to represent the two sons of Sparda and the Franchise. There are several great songs, but honestly Devil's Never Cry perfectly represents Dante, while this perfectly represents Vergil.
"I'm not trapped here with 10 demons, they are trapped here with me" I have to say, I've never heard this particular interpretation/explanation of Vergil, but it totally fits him. Really cool
For real though. Dante way before his prime casually used to defeat demons that other demons regarded as kings like Mundus and Berial and Balrog for instance. And now I'm pretty sure Dante and Vergil are both much much more powerful than Sparda ever was, and they are also back together, they can literally *slay all* of the demon world in a matter of minutes.
Hell yeah, it was exceptionally fun as the music changes as we rank up the style during the fight. Also the track made the entire ass kicking you dish out to the demons so much more badass.
The fact that you were able to pin point Vergil’s history and the background of the character goes to show how attentive you are to the lyrics! It’s rare to meet people like that! Good job pin pointing man!
Also the fact that Casey Edwards had to work within certain limitations imposed by Capcom and the fact that Bury The Light also connects with Devil Trigger in a very subtle yet satisfactory manner, it's safe to say that this song is a master piece.
Constraints usually birthed creativity. The same can be said with Doom 2016 soundtracks. If you had time, checkout Mick Gordon (composer of Doom 2016 & Eternal) talking in GDC, the video is "DOOM: Behind the Music"
In the tropical remix of devil trigger that you can find on Spotify you can clearly hear the melody, after you’ve heard it for the first time you’ll recognize it instantly.
The limitations helped. This song would not be as amazing as it was with guitar throughout all 9 minutes. Having bass most of the time and guitar just for the chorus is amazing.
The only thing I know for real or Stains of time are also in with a shout. The MGR soundtrack is nothing short of amazing, pity we are never going to get a sequal because that games deserves it as it stands on it's own to feet and isnt overshadowed by MGS.

I bought DMC5:SE a week ago, and, when I ran into this song, I dropped everything to listen to it isolated. A few days more, and here I am. Awesome reaction and input on an awesome song from an awesome game-I actually liked you’re unfamiliar with the franchise. From another newcomer: 10/10
Dude I have seen reactions and wow. That breakdown was HOLY SHET level like I almost jizzed at your way of explaining everything BALLS DEEP. Good job man. You earned a subscriber and now I look forward to you reacting to other musical pieces (you're a metal guy so I'll be looking at what type of metal stuff you can react to) like seriously. Reactions are amazing but the breakdown is what matters most.
Well, you’re in for it now Atlas. You now have to react to Devil Trigger from DMC 5. Oh, and of course into the ancient land from SoTC, but I can still wait. :)
This probably has to be my favorite OST from 2020, though the Hades OST is so damn good too. Honestly any track from Hades or Doom Eternal would be great for a reaction vid
What I love the most about this particular reaction is that you listened to the song in one go without pausing, rewinding for "let's hear it one more time" or other things like that in the first place, and only after that you made proper analysis. Massive respect for that. On top of that we can listen to this masterpiece one more time along with you. That itself is enormous pro in my book!
The best way I can describe this metal track is that when the heavy stuff kicks in, it kicks in hard. However, when the slower parts are playing, it's nothing like jazz or classical, where it's soothing. Instead, it's unsettling and uncomfortable, kinda like with the unsettling parts you find heavy metal music; but it's much more like you're scared of the dark (this song) rather than being scared of a scary thing (other heavy metal tracks)
Pre-video: THIS GONNA BE AWESOME! Post-video: Yeah, told ya. I'm most amazed that Atlas derived the whole character, in many details, from his theme alone, while having never played DMC before... Color me imesurably impressed, you are amazing! And on point! You hit the nail on the head there, while not specific, you got Vergil exactly as he is.
I know this a lot to ask after you just finished reacting to Bury the Light, but your spot on interpretation of the song makes me super curious to see your reaction to "Devil Trigger" which I would consider the unofficial "Main Theme" of DMC V as it was used the most to create the hype leading up to the game's initial release.
You gotta do Devil Trigger, Crimson Cloud, and even Subhuman. Each playable character in the game has their own battle theme that dynamically syncs up with your style rank, essentially how well you're playing. At the top style rank (SSS) in each song you usually get the chorus coming in and it's super well done and feels so awesome in conjunction with the tight gameplay.
This vid gets me motivated. You think you could do the Fatalis theme or Devil Trigger next? DMC and MH are my favorite series' so seeing you do both back to back has me estatic regardless.
Your analysis of the lyrics is pretty spot on. The character is a son of a powerful person who lost his loved ones because of what his father was. He vowed to become strong so he'll never lose anything again but in doing so he ended up driving away his only family left and eventually losing himself in his quest for power.
Yes, I've been looking forward to this reaction 🖤 Casey Edwards and Victor Borba really created a masterpiece that fits Vergil so well, their song Vacant Surrender is fantastic as well if anyone wants to check it out!
Damn, you say you don't know the dmc franchise, but accurately explaining Who Vergil is just from the lyrics??..That takes some seriously sick talent!!...Great job bro!!
Very spot on breakdown on the lyrics! A recomendation of mine would be "Run" from Final Fantasy XIII-2: super underrated track that just makes you fall in love with the game.
Man, the fact there's a violin in a rock song about a video game character is amazing, yet alone that it explains the entire dmc story that virgil's gone through.
I knew you would love this. And the breakdown was on point to, great video ATLAS 👍 Maybe i'll come back someday with another request, but it will be dificult to defeat this one
I clicked on this vid since you had a *sharp inhale* disappointment face on the thumbnail. First few seconds in, I discovered it was a pre-nut face. Amazing

Great reaction man. Even though you went in blind you nailed so much about Vergil's character. You should totally react to Blood and Guts from Berserk. It's a sad, somber song but at the same time it's so cool and badass. I think you will really enjoy it.
I dunno if anyone has pointed it out yet, but there are no guitars in this composition, Casey was challenged not to use any but he did a cheeky lil shifty wifty on some bass tracks and overlaid them synths to get that sound.
I would love to see you react to another Bloodborne song. My favorite off the soundtrack is Lady Maria of the astral clock tower. It reflects the horrible deeds she has committed and it’s tone matches the dance like quality of the boss fight.

I would recommend all the other games exept dmc2
@@bagofair9787 why not infested chopper was probably one of the best bosses in the entire series
@@PharoahKing_- oh dam u right
Dude I have seen reactions and wow.
Thanks a lot Dante, and I agree. The reactions are hook, but the real content is in the breakdown!
ATLAS: "Did reaction to Bury The Light"
Gael: *Now I'm motivated a bit.*
''A fresh of breath air''
best quote so far
Needs to go on a shirt 👚
Lol
You're a real music conisour.
Someone who appreciates music this well to understand it deserves a sub.
May be cause ya love metal as well
Thank you 😊
2:31
When he said “AŪGHÆ”
I felt that
It was so powerful that he had to adjust the volume *twice*
I love how you actually take time to react to it and then break it down!
Thank you Shen 🙂
6:26 what if I told you that the vocalist is self-taught and can sing in Japanese?
This song gives everyone who hears it *Motivation!!!*
this song is addicting
who knew, that "bury the light" would spread so much joy
Very insightful reaction. To be able to understand Vergil so perfectly just listening to the lyrics shows your attention to details. Thanks for this.
Thanks mate! To be fair, the lyrics did most of the work 💪🏻
@@AtlasBenighted d=(´▽`)=b Thanks for the wonderful videos.
The lyrics and thought that went into them alone make this such a great song.
Awesome!
Indeed!
That was exactly my first reaction to this song. "Oh, that sounds cool... Oh violins, of course... OH BOY!"
Now do Devil Trigger.
I actually looked for this expecting it to be there by now, hopefully he does it.
No
10:36 I love how the guitar sings along the song "Bury the Light thats deep within, cast aside there's no coming home.."
Thanks for the kind words Lucas! To be fair the lyrics were very helpful!
It's getting traction!
You know a piece is awesome when your only reaction to the chorus is to turn it up :D
It slaps so hard
You gotta do Devil Trigger, Crimson Cloud, and even Subhuman. Each playable character in the game has their own battle theme that dynamically syncs up with your style rank, essentially how well you're playing. At the top style rank (SSS) in each song you usually get the chorus coming in and it's super well done and feels so awesome in conjunction with the tight gameplay.
As much as I love Dante even more than vergil
Subhuman is not good honestly
The song is like this listening to it and then if you play as the character it's for while it's playing it just perfects it
This vid gets me motivated.
You nailed his backstory! Well done!
Thanks mate
I love how he doesn't pause the track unlike some other people 😏
Crazy how accurate the lyrics translates Vergil's characterization. Now I wanna see him do Devils Never Cry!
Another great song is senator armstrong theme from metal gear rising revengeance
"It has to be this way"
basically any song from mgrr is great
Damn, you say you don't know the dmc franchise, but accurately explaining Who Vergil is just from the lyrics??..That takes some seriously sick talent!!...Great job bro!!
Thanks mate!
Very spot on breakdown on the lyrics!
A recomendation of mine would be "Run" from Final Fantasy XIII-2: super underrated track that just makes you fall in love with the game.
That's one of my favorite tracks from XIII-2. Gets me pumped up every time I listen to it. The instrument solos are incredible.
Man, the fact there's a violin in a rock song about a video game character is amazing, yet alone that it explains the entire dmc story that virgil's gone through.
2:15 the music barely started and his body was already motivated
Motivated man gets motivated
I really prefer the Acapella Intro version, but every single version of this music is fantastic!
I knew you would love this. And the breakdown was on point to, great video ATLAS 👍
Maybe i'll come back someday with another request, but it will be dificult to defeat this one
At 7:00 , the band you mean is probably Periphery. Their song Reptile from the album Hail Stan. Sounds pretty similar, might've been an inspiration.
Not Periphery, but that is a good example too 👍🏻
Casey Edwards is MONSTER
Mick gordon 🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥 with BFG division ( DOOM )
amazing content! I recommend "The only thing they fear is you" and "cultist base".
keep it up
When you start feeling motivated.........
You know that the song is good!
This song is straight fire I love it .
"I am the storm that is APPROACHING!!!"
Vergil is a magnificent character and this song was born for him and its a eternal a masterpiece

POV: Vergil unsheathes his *"Yamato"*
I’m waiting for your reaction to the best game soundtrack ever from Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails... the original Quake game from 1996.
That OST is badass! Give soyshinoda a like please!
Listen to that man lol
Now i'm motivated
React to gehrman's theme from bloodborne
I second
I third
I fifth- wait that's wron- I ALWAYS FUCK THIS UP!
I clicked on this vid since you had a *sharp inhale* disappointment face on the thumbnail. First few seconds in, I discovered it was a pre-nut face. Amazing
*deceit +1*
"my family crest is a demon of death'', that statement alone is metal
I'm a new fan here, but I just want to say, I found you through attack on titan and Made in Abyss. DMC, Doom, and high tier anime are all related. I hope you do more anime in the future. Anyways, I have really enjoyed your video layout for the ones I have watched--nice work! I'm just hoping you broaden your reaction horizons because the musical messages are evolving in several mediums
Thank you mate 🙂
@@AtlasBenighted thank YOU! It was a treat to find someone both deciding to highlight these musical media and having an understanding of music enabling them to dive deeper into the meat of it. :)
I AM THE STORM THAT IS ESCAPIIING
EVADING
PARENTAL OBLIGATIONS
I AM THE CHANGER OF MY NAAAAME
LIFE IN FLAMES
I AM IN DEBT
MY CHILD SUPPORT IS A DEMON OF DEATH
His vocabulary is amazing, he's like thesaurus with how he describes things
🤭
My fav part is the second verse with the two step drums, oh man. Talk about motivation.
This probably one of my favorite songs period.
We are still waiting for your reaction to the grimm troupe ost(hollow knight)
Keep going, I love this type of reactions
I first heard this as a meme, I searched it and unironically fell in love with it.
Now I am extra motivated.
Along with Vergil's character, this theme is amazing.
Indeed!
It can't be an Atlas video without atleast 15 cars honking in the background
I'm going to trademark that mate! 😆
Amazing Song
Devils Never Cry (DMC3), Shall Never Surrender, Sworn through Swords (DMC4), Devil trigger, Subhuman, Crimson Cloud (DMC5). extremely recommended to react to in this franchise :)
When you're happy you vibe to the music
when you're sad you understand the lyrics
When you're MOTIVATED you get POWER
DEVIL TRIGGER NEXT PLEASE LESGOOOO
Great reaction man. Even though you went in blind you nailed so much about Vergil's character. You should totally react to Blood and Guts from Berserk. It's a sad, somber song but at the same time it's so cool and badass. I think you will really enjoy it.
Thank you Phan Boy!
2:47
- The face: *dissgusted*
- What the heck bro?
- Amazing
- Oh! Oke! I apologize sir.
😆 😆
I dunno if anyone has pointed it out yet, but there are no guitars in this composition, Casey was challenged not to use any but he did a cheeky lil shifty wifty on some bass tracks and overlaid them synths to get that sound.
I would love to see you react to another Bloodborne song. My favorite off the soundtrack is Lady Maria of the astral clock tower. It reflects the horrible deeds she has committed and it’s tone matches the dance like quality of the boss fight.
It reminded me of a band "Kamelot" and their song, " When the lights are down"
I wasn't a fan of this track when it dropped but it seriously grew on me since then. Lots of sick tracks all throughout DMC, especially 3 with it's leitmotifs and such
I'm glad to see we had the same reaction
Please react to Devil Trigger! Bury the Light has a hint of it at the end connecting the two character themes beautifully.
If you want more of Casey Edwards, listen to "Vacant Surrender", which has the same vocalist as Bury The Light
If you can pls react to the full mhw iceborn safi’jiva and fatalis OST
I second this! They're both fantastic tunes.
This may not be a popular request, but maybe necrofantasia from touhou?
Good choice.
