I can't even get over this. *OoT is one of if not the best game ever created - but this video is one of the best showcases of why this game is actually so amazing.* This video is truly an amazing presentation.
*After all these years, I still can't totally fathom how someone can say that OoT is overrated.* Saying OoT is an overrated videogame is like saying water is overrated because it isn't soda. Or it's like saying cola is overrated because it isn't cherry-cola. A person is allowed to not like Zelda and OoT, of course they are. But saying it's overrated would signify one may be ignorant of the history, artistry and expertise of game development or even being a gamer. You don't always have to agree with the majority, but the majority agree that the way OoT was executed was masterfully done.
*OoT is factually a masterpiece based off what humans judge to be good and how the project was executed to follow those guidelines.* Of course OoT isn't perfect, but when you analyze it within the scope of technological and human capabilities of game design of the time (and even to this day) it is truly a masterpiece. Not only is it a masterpiece in terms of a game and gameplay, but also a story, a cinematic experience, and musical genius. It's been widely discussed that the composer for OoT, Koji Kondo, is in fact a musical genius. Maybe it was by accident, maybe Koji doesn't know he's a musical genius, but he is. Hearing his music as you experience the game and its environments is something so sublime I can't even describe it here.
*I am of the firm belief that everybody in society should be given a copy of OoT when they reach a certain age and be encouraged to play it.* Almost like the way there are certain cartoons / movies in society that are just so "amazing," so engrained, or so popular that a large majority of the population has seen these cartoons or movies. Like, if you had a child, why wouldn't you want them to experience this amazing game and righteous story of courage? It's innocent and whimsical but also mature at the same time. OoT displays a positive message and enforces these positive behaviors in its gameplay as well. I guess I sound like a nerd who takes these things too seriously, but I would much rather my child, if and when I have children, to grow up playing Zelda rather than watching all of the trash on TV and in movies.

Great video. I think you hit the nail on the head in a way I’ve been trying to articulate for years. Oot doesn’t waste a single thing. Something I think plaguing gaming development right now is that the technology is at a point where you can conceivably add on more things to a game without having to tie it back to everything else. With oot, because the scope was so big, but even things like file sizes at the time were not, if you wanted to include songs they better have a useful functionality (which ended up being fast travel). This is why side quests end up having awesome rewards that feel “worth it” because they had limited space so only the best stuff made it past the cutting room floor. What makes this game not only my favorite zelda game but my greatest game of all time is that they did not compromise the scope of the game they wanted to create even when the technology for the time would have made it very easy to do so. On another note some small corrections (I do not intend this to sound snobbish so apologies if it does): bottles are required in the main story because Rutos letter is found in a bottle which later is used to bring a fish to jabu jabu. Wouldn’t want someone getting stuck at that part if they thought bottles were optional. Also they are called spiritual stones not pendants, they were never meant to be worn because they act like keys for the door of time.

    • @zeltroid
      @zeltroid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great thoughts! You didn't come across as snobbish at all either, so don't worry about that :) You're right about the bottles, but I think the other 3 are optional (I could have been more specific). As for the "Pendants", you're absolutely right, and I think that was my Link to the Past childhood subconsciously taking precedent. lol. Thanks for watching video and for taking time to write a great comment about it! Means a lot.

I recognize your voice from your NBA page :) Honestly, whenever I see a "greatest game of all-time" list and Ocarina isn't #1, I just completely ignore the list. This game was utterly mind-blowing and has stood up well to the test of time. I played it again last year for the first time in 20 years and I enjoyed it as much as I did as a kid. And I played the original, not the remastered update. This game was absolutely perfect.
I think especially for a kid in middle school playing the game, it hit even harder because we all wanted to grow up and be strong, heroic men. But in this game, you get thrown into a late teenage body where you're far bigger and stronger, but the world has grown darker and becomes even more challenging. The game is basically telling you, "Life doesn't get easier just because you get bigger and can do things you couldn't do before. In fact, life gets harder. And you have to rise to the challenge."
It's utterly phenomenal and no matter what game I've played... Be it Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3, the KOTOR series, Elden Ring, so many others... Nothing will ever touch the brilliance of Ocarina of Time. It blew away the traditional way of gaming and created an entirely new genre of massive open-world games. It is such a fantastic game. The GOAT of all games.

It's a classic coming of age story or the hero's journey. You are a kid who grows up in the forest and have a dagger and a slab of wood as a shield and a slingshot. You explore most of hyrule as a kid and ganondorf swats you away like a fly. You go and pull the master sword and are shocked how ganondorf ruined hyrule in 7 years and the wrold is bleak and isn't carefree like it was when you were a kid.
They did a good job spreading the rewards. Theme of time and how it changes everything. After traveling everywhere as a kid and adult and freeing all the sages and undoing everything ganondorf did and how you are the prophesied hero was just amazing. Unlike Tears of the kingdom. When hyrule is restored there is a change with Link. All the things he experienced will forever change him. He did all that as a 10 year old in a 17 year old's body. He undid the heroics no one will remember. then with twilight princess he still wasn't able to stop ganondorf. He was still sealed away.
The items are really cool and are useful. at the end of the game you have golden gauntlets, a mirror shield, nayru's love, the biggoron sword and a full arsenal of equiptment. the adventure is great and you look fully decked out as the hero so the cosmetics add to it.

I love this series idea, unlike the basketball GOATs videos you did on the other channel, which has a finite amount of serious contenders, this discussion has a seemingly limitless amount of choices because video games are such a subjective topic and any great game could be argued to be someone’s favorite. The game I’d want you to play most would be Mario and Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story, because I spent so much of my life immersed in that world when I was younger. It probably won’t happen, as it isn’t as widely well-regraded as other games, but it would be incredible if you made that video a reality.

And when you look at it that way OOT is def worthy of being claimed as the “best”/“greatest” . It was literal decades ahead of its time when looking at certain game design elements and there is a reason it is still the highest scored game on Aggregate even 25 years later . Keep up the awesome work! And btw, I love the analysis videos on old school basketball on the other channel, if you can’t tell, I love everything from the 80s and 90s despite not being alive to experience it. My two favorite NBA players are MJ and Bird with Wilt just barley getting third.

Great video. I love this game. In the Fifth Grade, Ocarina of Time, Dragon Ball Z, and Redwall are what changed it all for me. Before that, I opted for playing sports outside, despite owning Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, and Mario Kart 64. When I got Ocarina of Time for Christmas in 1998, that sent me on the otaku path I am still on.
Can you please also do GOAT videos for the following:
    -Majora’s Mask
-Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille Zur Macht
    -Final Fantasy XI: Online
    -Dark Cloud

Based on what you said, that's why I feel BOTW is my least favorite game. There's a lack of incentive for exploring and getting a treasure lacked impact due to the nature of the items. There were great parts of the game, but overall it felt underwhelming.

very interesting that you found the pacing of Twilight Princess' dungeons too fast. I felt that they were spaced fairly far apart, which plays well to my own personal preference, but more objectively I thought they had pretty long gaps between them. the first 3 have the entire twilight sections between them, then there's Midna's lament and the master sword before 4, the whole sequence getting Prince Ralis saved and then traversing Snowpeak before 5, I'll admit it's pretty short to get to 6, but then there's the huge Sky Book quest to get to 7. and by then the number of dungeons has kind of earned the very fast transition into 8 and 9, which almost function as one super dungeon given that the two basically happen directly back to back (if you don't choose to do anything else or have other side quests), they operate in the same "first twilight, then light world" mechanic that the first 3 major areas did, and they bring together a gigantic final assault on the dual antagonist set-up. after City in the Sky, you're practically begging for the opportunity to go finish off Zant and confront Ganondorf. but for the majority of the game, I felt the dungeons had the longest gaps between them of any Zelda, a welcome thing if, like myself, you enjoy an absolute ton of content separating them. just means more Zelda to play lol

I could go for hours on why this game or that is the GOAT or otherwise excellent.
I didn't know about the significance of the Legend of Zelda timeline, although it's confusing to think that all the games are somehow canon after OoT. I would have guessed that the GOAT would be Majora's Mask before OoT, given that it deviated so heavily from the normal linear time platform. Not only did it introduce the limited, resetable game time, but it did it so well while also shoving a book of tasks to do for rewards and collectibles. And, of course, the different masks that let you perform different actions and transform into different beings. It was both a Legend of Zelda game and a sharp deviation, and they did it so well. I also enjoyed A Link to the Past on the SNES, and Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess on the Wii.
I don't know much about Halo, but I am interested in your take on which one is the GOAT.
My all-time fav is Final Fantasy 7, although it would be in competition with The Legend of Dragoon and Chrono Trigger, but FF7 was the first I played and so long before I played the others that it is my fav by default.
    Some other games I loved (Doesn't necessarily nominate them for GOAT, but I want to shout them out);
    - PC -
Black Mesa (Also Half-Life/Source, but the Crowbar Collective did a great job with Black Mesa)
Half-Life 2 series (Even though Valve abandoned it. I'm not accepting the VR game, Alyx as a substitute for a sequel)
Left 4 Dead 2 (Supposedly Back 4 Blood is the spiritual successor, but it would be hard to beat L4D2)
Myst (I like Myst 1/2/3, can't decide which one I like best. There is also an anniversary edition and masterpiece edition with updated graphics, a remake called Realmyst, and another remake also named Myst that was just recently released. So, like 4 versions of the OG? And then there's 4/5/Uru which are not as good as the first 3 games, I even encountered bugs on Windows 10 which ruined the experience)
Team Fortress Classic (TFC) (Possibly until recently, my most-played game of all time. Impossible to know exact hours since I played before Steam even existed. It's unfortunate that Fortress Forever couldn't get off the ground; too buggy and not enough players interested. We got left with Team Fortress 2, which was too cartoony and, for a long time, was just a hat-collecting game)
Warframe (Competing with TFC for most-played. I'm impressed with their business; 99% of everything in the game is free if you dedicate time to it, you only pay money for cosmetics or to skip the time needed to obtain something you want)
    - MSX -
Metal Gear 2 (Not to be confused with Metal Gear Solid 2) (A version was released on the NES, but I heard it's not as good because they changed a few things. The newer version, anniversary/legacy/whatever edition also removes the imagery and references that the OG had, like Sean Connery and characters from Arnold Schwarzenegger and other action movies)
    - Gameboy -
    Kirby's Dreamland
    - SNES -
    Chrono Trigger
    - N64 -
    Conker's Bad Fur Day
    - Wii -
Metroid Other M (I don't care how badly received it was. If you remove the plot where Samus is absurdly timid and submissive, and the whole BOTTLE ship aspect, it's a very good game. The game design that blended the 2D and 3D qualities, I dare say it feels like Metroid Dread, to an extent)
    - SEGA Genesis/Megadrive -
Beyond Oasis (I obtained this game because I asked for "Zelda for SEGA" 😆)
Lightning Force (Seems to have something to do with Thunder Force. I'm not looking into it. But good game even though it's insanely hard)
    Ranger X
    X-Men 2: Clone Wars
    - PS1 -
    The Legend of Dragoon
    - PS2 -
Dark Cloud 2 (Dark Cloud 1 was pretty groundbreaking to me, but 2 absolutely destroyed it)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
    - PS3 -
Deadly Premonition (Avoid the version on Steam, possibly any other PC version. It appears that Windows 10, and possibly Windows 8, removed a graphics redistributable that fixed a bug which makes it impossible to progress after a certain point)
Puppeteer (Love it. Can't believe it doesn't have a next gen port)
    Uncharted 1/2/3 (I can't pick a fav, but I hear 2 was the best and I won't argue)

Thanks for all the feedback! Tons of great games on your list. I definitely think FF7 is gonna make it into this series at some point. If you ever decide to get into Halo, just pick up the "Master Chief Collection". The first 3 Halo games are 3 of the greatest games I've ever played. I don't think the franchise has come close to that level of quality ever since, and I'm certainly not alone on that thought. Thanks for watching and for taking time to write such an in depth comment! Means a ton

Before I start, just know, I AM NOT THROWING HATE AT THE GAME, I AM NOT CALLING IT A BAD GAME, DON'T GET MAD AT ME *I AM NOT THROWING HATE AT THE GAME*, with that out of the way, let's start:
I have heard thousands or even millions of people say that Ocarina of Time is the best video game ever, so, I decided to play it on my switch with the online expansion pack. I told myself "If the reviews are so high then it must be a great game, since I have the expansion pack, why not give it a shot?"
To give a little bit of context, Zelda games have never really apealed to me, I played the NES zelda 1 for a couple of hours, I kinda liked it but not a lot, I played a link to the past on the SNES and dropped it after 5 minutes. So, going into Ocarina of Time, my opinion on Zelda games wasn't very good
I really wanted to see what makes it such a great game and also see why the zelda franchise is so highly praised and maybe make myself a new zelda fan.
So, I start the game and you know what, it looked fun, for the first time I was enjoying a Zelda game. The music was really good and the characters where fun! As of writing this, the farthest point i've got to collecting the compass on the deku tree dungeon, so like 10 minutes in. And let me tell you I am SUPER BORED. I really don't know what to do in the game and to me, the progression is really slow. I know i'm in the first 10 minutes of the game, I know, I know, but I just dont really wanna play anymore.
Some people might say: "Well if you're stuck just look up a walkthrough" and, yes that is a good idea, but, when I start a game, I dont really like looking up walktroughs when im only 10 minutes in, it feels wierd to me. But I had to look it up or else I wouldnt make any progress which has led me to where I am on the game right now, and still, im very bored.
So, can anyone (especially zelda fans at heart) tell me how I can enjoy this game? Because I really want to enjoy it, trust me,
I REALLY DO. I wanna see what makes the game so great.
But I just can't bring myself into playing the game without getting bored and, if you play a game that you're bored of, then it's not very fun, is it?
Please tell me what parts of the game I should look forward to, what mechanics I should enjoy, *why I should be having fun*
But for now, I'll just keep playing Mario 64.

I hope you make an counter video with this game (and every other one you make) cause unfortunately nowadays whenever someone talks about OoT, people will just assume you're riding on nostalgia
honestly whenever something gets overly loved or gushed about I lose love/interest in the game like how for OoT and Gen 1 Kanto
I will agree the Ganon fight was awesome
ranking my favorite Zeldas in order, score wise
not interested in Zelda 1 or 2
Link to the Past- 8/10, plenty of dungeons to enjoy but the story could've been slightly better
Ocarina of Time- 7/10, the overworld was a bit barren other then a few hidden holes. the story was simple
Majora's Mask- 10/10, even though it was made within 2 years, it still came out amazing
Wind Waker- never played it sadly
Twilight Princess- 9/10, Midna is best companion but the amount of filler is annoying
Skyward Sword- 7/10 the lore is great but there's so much backtracking its not even funny
Link Between Worlds- 9/10, I loved Lorule's view on life plus the new main villain Yuga, his theme was cool
Breath of the Wild- 9/10 its so close to being good but sadly the story was very lacking
