The ganon intro is masterclass in cinematography.
The utter darkness except his eyes and triforce before he transforms.
The beast hidden in darkness, his form only revealed in momentary lightning strikes.
The mastersword in centre frame between you and Zelda. You’ve just been stripped of your best tool against the final threat.
The final up-angle shot of an unarmed hero against an insurmountable threat. The final obstacle.
Brought together by atmosphere and iconic theme. I get chills every time.

I remember seeing Ocarina of Time for the first time. I had been playing Link's Awakening that my friend's older brother let me borrow on my Gameboy Color and I was loving it. I went to another friend's house and was telling him about it, and he was like, "Oh, Zelda?? I've just started that on my N64!"
I was maybe 6 or 7 at the time, and my view on games was pretty much limited to Gameboy Color titles and a small handful of N64 games (I got N64 games far less because they were more expensive and a part of me preferred playing games on my Gameboy because I could play them anywhere... Imagine my reaction to the Switch all these years later, haha.)
Anyway, this friend had a wealthy father who was also a gamer himself, so he got pretty much any game under the sun. He popped in Ocarina of Time on the N64 and he was just getting through the Deku Tree. I'll never forget that moment where he walked out onto Hyrule Field and being blown away by how intense it was. It was HUGE at the time. I went over to his house almost every day and we played through the game together. I remember wanting to do nothing but ride Epona across Hyrule Field over and over at one point because it was so fun. We played for a couple months to get to the end and when we finally did, it felt like we really achieved a huge goal in our young lives.
That friend moved away not long after we beat Ocarina of Time. Maybe 6 months. On the last day he was in town, we were sitting around and playing our Gameboys and I mentioned how I was gonna miss hanging out with him, that he was the only kid on my block I could spend time with after school. He returned the sentiment by reaching into his already packed up N64 and handing me his copy of Ocarina of Time.
I was taken aback and told him I didn't want to take it, because even as a kid, I could feel what a big gesture that was. It got late and it was time for me to go home. So I stepped outside and we hugged each other goodbye and I walked home. As soon as I got in my room, I popped Ocarina into my N64 and started a new playthrough.
When I woke up the next morning, I walked back to his house to see if I could tell him goodbye before he left for good, one last time, but their house was locked up and the car was gone.
In a weird way, it almost felt like Link's journey, suddenly being in a different setting with your friend being gone without a trace and having to go on an adventure alone. That adventure was a solo playthrough of Ocarina, beating it from start to finish, even all the tough parts my friend usually beat.
I'll always have a big place in my heart for this game.
edit: this comment has gotten so many kind words and I really appreciate it. To those wondering, no, I haven't seen my friend since the day he left. I don't remember his last name or where he moved to (he was moving to another city for a while before moving out of state, from what I can remember) so I don't really have any means of finding him. My parents might remember so I'll have to ask them. OOT is one of my fav games and the fact this story resonated with so many of you warms my heart. much love, ya'll.

His family had moved to a city about two hours away, then had moved out of state, from what I remember being told as a kid. It's been a long time, we're both in our mid-twenties now. I'd look him up on social media, but I can't remember his last name for the life of me. I'm gonna have to ask my parents sometime and see if they remember.

OoT and MM are the best Zeldas, not just because they're so well designed, and obviously they're technically inferior to the newer games. They're the best, because of the profound themes they deal with. OoT is about growing up. MM is about dealing with grief. Neither story ends happily ever after. They end in very bittersweet ways. Everyone is made and undone by time, which is the central mechanic and theme of both games. They might be videogames set in fantasy worlds, but there is something so relatable and meaningful at their core. This is ultimately they are the best Zeldas, and stuck with me the longest. They are the exemplars of video game design.

Alright, I need to get this out there. I don't "get" Ocarina of time. I don't have the same connection as everyone seems to have. I played OoT first before Botw and I don't have the same emotion. I can't connect with the characters, nor the story, nor the deep DEEP symbolism that apparently exists in the story. Botw however made much more of an impact; I thought of the people that inhabit the world, the impact Link has on the world, and in fact I made Link have a story arc! I'm sorry to people that see this and think I hate OoT. I don't and probably never will. I just don't see OoT as the greatest game of all time, much less one of my favorites. I'm also sorry for polluting this comment section with a comment that doesn't praise OoT to the high heavens.

I'd say your video here is probably one of the most well-spoken videos on the subject of Ocarina of Time. Instead of taking sides or making one-sided arguments, you discussed the golden timeless quality that a lot of people either ignored or overlooked. The Story, a coming of age. I deeply look forward to your video on Majora's Mask, because of just how human of an experience that game is. I do find it a shame that not many really discuss the game outside of some deeply focused circles. Oh yeah, good luck on Shrek the Third and congrats, you're almost at 130K.

Not once was it a matter of fact, it was meant to entertain and express personal opinion. Arin still loves Ocarina and a lot. Keep in mind Arin wanted to critique the game and discuss it in a manner that people can learn more about it. It is a flawed sequilitis but a great one in terms of comedy and something game developers can use for reference when designing something.

@@ScottE-2 "something game developers can use for reference when designing something" That statement is just so wrong. Sure it's his opinion. But his opinions are ill formed and based on his own willfull ignorance. If you have seen him playthrough this game on GG its clear he doesn't like Ocarina at all. Which is fine. My point really is that he is incable of comprehending what makes these games actually good. As the orginal commenter mentioned there are truly timeless qualities to this game that go completely overlooked by many. I hate the fact that so many people watch that sequilitis video and take it as gospel when Arin doesn't even seem to understand the subject matter he is talking about. I get his perspective is like "this gameplay sucks" fine. But why ignore all the fantastic world building and ambience? If it was up to Arin I feel like games would still be about getting high scores rather than making you feel powerful emotions (which is what Ocarina does so damn well).

    • @ScottE-2
      @ScottE-2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jonathonivall2792 My statement wasn't wrong, it has been used by game developers, or more specifically students in a classroom setting. I never said it was gospel, I stated that its a flawed one but still has qualities that people can use outside of the video itself. It was a bit more comedy based than it was technical compared to Megaman and Castlevania. Look man, I get that you don't like Arin and that he did overlook certain details, but the reason he had to was that he took into account the original Zelda, A Link to The Past, Ocarina of Time, and A Link Between Worlds for how design principals set by each. More or less how things were changed by each sequel for better or worse. I think Smooth McGroove put it best with his comment:
"Arin hit on some important topics in this video, and whether you agree with him or not, he did a fantastic job of analyzing what makes Zelda fun and what possibly takes away from a great experience. Exploring the ideas behind what makes games fun can lead to new ideas, which might just inspire some awesome new games!" - Smooth McGroove 2014.
I don't want to talk about a 4 year old video any further, not because it is still a polarizing thing to many, but because its already been discussed to death. I will note a few things I absolutely disagree with you on:
"...he is incapable of comprehending what makes these games actually good."
To see you say that really puts into perspective of what you truly think of him, the man isn't dumb, far from it. Not everyone is a genius like you, nor can everyone look at what you say and agree with it 100%, I hate dehumanizing statements like that. The man has done nothing wrong, if it were any other guy you would have brushed it off like the rest of us.
"If it was up to Arin, I feel like games would still be about getting high scores rather than making you feel powerful emotions..."
You might have a point there except that:
      1. You cannot presume just one person can hold the power to decide what games are and are not.
      2. There are many games out there today that still focus on getting high scores Triple-A or Indie it does not matter.
      3. Powerful emotions do not make a game what it is, its a combination of how the gameplay and story intertwine with each other in such a way that it creates an experience that resonates with a player on a more personal level.
Think before you speak, check before you send, and do not pretend you are ignorant. One more thing: I may have been the first in this comment thread to have pointed out what people overlooked that made this game so timeless; you have forgotten that many players around the world already understood that prior to Arin ever getting around to talking about it.

    • @jonathonivall2792
      @jonathonivall2792 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@ScottE-2 No, I don't doubt people use Arin's video as a reference for game design. I merely meant it was wrong to do so. "he did overlook certain details" that's a nice way of sweeping any critique of Arin under the carpet.
My problem with Arin is that, like you said, he is drawing a direct comparison of OOT to LTTP and instead of evaluating the game on its own merits (amazing ambience, strong characters and that music!) he is just complaining about all the ways it isn't LTTP, when I would argue OOT does a lot of things better. It is a unfair comparison from the start and he is using his own warped criteria to compare the two games. I mean if you watch this video the guy pretty much mentions everything Arin either ignores or is too dense to pick up on, but are part of the core design aspects of Ocarina.
So just because you make an arbitrary list of reasons, that invalidates my statement? No, I stand by what I said. If it were up to Arin, video games wouldn't be about establishing atmosphere they would purely be about the gameplay. The guy doesnt seem to care or appreciate good theming. He just wants to get to point A - B as fast as possible. As gamers we just appreciate different things I suppose, however his closing statements at the end of the Majora's Mask playthrough have always stuck with me. "It's not that this game is bad. It's that so many people say it is good." He then goes on to compare Majora's Mask to being kicked in the nuts. I'm sorry but it sounds like he has something to prove and this is why I hate that sequelitis video. He is not objective at all, yet people take him as some kind of game design genius? Does the guy even work on games?
"Think before you speak, check before you send, and do not pretend you are ignorant." so you can use condescending statments but Im not allowed to?
"you have forgotten that many players around the world already understood that" Well maybe it needs to be said more often. I'm so sick of people shitting on this game for all the wrong reasons. Rant over.

    1. SS is a great game with a great story as well, it serves as our Genesis and answered many questions raised during the series. 2. OoT Link's quest(even after MM) is still tragic after what we learned through both WW(Link not being there to stop Ganon, ending to getting the three stones and pulling the Master Sword) and TP(Link taking the Ocarina at the minimum, and at least one stone with him) forcing Hyrule and the Gerudo to start a war( it isn't a coincidence that the prison in TP is in a desert and there are no Gerudo) his sadness of not passing on his skills as a warrior kept him tethered to the world until he met his descendant(TP Link) and was able to pass on his skills.
For me this is what makes OoT my favorite Link as well, he doesn't really "win" in a traditional sense since there isn't a clear path as to which is better, but all involve OoT Link to suffer even past death. I hope you choose to mention these aspects in the Majoras Mask video(if you even see this comment at all). Great video overall, highly enjoyed it, keep up the good work.

Well the thing about the resistance is that in Twilight Princess it was 'happening' right then, or soon after the events of Zant taking over the kingdom. There was still people with hope, whereas in Ocarina of Time it's been seven years. By now Ganondorf would have absolute power, which he does basically. Though it would have been nice to see any sort of resistance, I think it can be seen this way.
Also what are your thoughts on Skyward Sword? I personally thought story wise it was one of the greater ones. Sorta, the characters were nice, and it was refreshing to see the relationship between Zelda and Link. Before BOTW came out, Skyward Sword was probably a huge turning point in helping develop the characters to be...well, human. I felt that Skyward Sword was underrated, and it truly affected BOTW as it evolved the way characters interacted with the world, the way characters impacted the narrative. Like, having your ultimate reason to defeat Demise, was not because you were 'the hero of destiny/prophercy' as the older games depicted. But it's because you as Link ultimately chose to do it to save your chilldhood friend, and that for me is a step forward towards humanising the Zelda franchise characters. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of great characters, but ultimately I felt Skyward Sword was a *huge* step forward. And then having Fi evolving through the game was kinda sad for me. Because in the end she finally understands the emotions she feels, and it becomes even sadder when you find out that as the spirit of the Master Sword, she is always in every other game from then on, it's just she can never talk to you.
Of course when BOTW came out, it delved even deeper, having the normally unbreakable and perfect Zelda as someone who's flawed, as the person of the triforce that had to prove themselves worthy of wielding the power.
So what do you think of Skyward Sword?

Ocarina of Time is one of my favorite games, and one I've played since my childhood. Your retrospective allowed me to see the game from another angle, now realizing that OoT can be seen as a tragedy. (Yeah, the day is saved, but Hyrule is heavily scarred from the whole ordeal.)
The theory of the sages being dead is also interesting. I thought for a long time that there was something else going on with them, perhaps some sort of familial, though not genetic, relationship between them and Link. (After giving you the Fire Medallion, Darunia says that you and him are now "true brothers." This "familial" relationship would also explain why Saria and Ruto behave the way they do after being saved.)
Thinking about it, maybe it's a little of both. Perhaps the sages _are_ dead, but not in a literal sense. (It'd be a little hard for Twinrova to re-brainwash Nabooru as they planned if they killed her right after the Iron Knuckle fight.) It seems becoming sages makes them immortal, and thus, even though they're alive, they can't return to their old lives. As far as Hyrule is concerned, they may as well be dead, which would lead to King Zora and Mido mourning the loss of Saria and Ruto. Speaking of, being immortal would prevent Saria and Ruto from having a romantic relationship with Link (and also due to Link, you know, not being the same species as them).
And yes, Saria did have a love interest in Link, as explained by Mido after clearing the Forest Temple. Mido even wants you to tell Link he's sorry for everything he had done, showing that even your childhood bully has matured in a way.
That said, I think Link could have treated Saria a little better, even with his naivete. If Link so much as hugged the poor girl after being handed the Fairy Ocarina, or after saving her from the Forest Temple, it would have gone a long way. They're close friends after all, or at least Saria thinks so.
Anyway, thanks for the new perspective on this story. Now I feel like playing OoT again.

@@thefrubblewarrior4678 To each their own. Breath of The Wild is also a great game. If you're looking for characters and the impact you leave on a world, I actually recommend Majora's Mask, the direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. That's a game where effectively half of it is the side quests: Getting to know the people of Termina, and helping them with their various troubles. There's a good chunk of cutscenes and details you can find that even 100% doesn't have to do, but they're there to flesh out the world. The more you get to know Termina, the more weight is added to the plot of the game.
The N64 and 3DS versions are significantly different from each other. 3DS has better controls, better graphics, a proper Zora trial in the final level, and some added sidequests like fishing and a 7th bottle. At the same time, though, they changed how the bosses are fought, how Zora Link swims, and moved some things around, such as the bank, one of the bottles, a Heart Piece, and the Woodfall and Snowhead Great Fairy rewards. The 4th boss' gimmick, optional in N64, becomes mandatory in the 3DS version, making the fight almost completely different. 3DS also vastly expands the Bomber's Notebook to include many more of the game's characters and sidequests compared to the N64 version. This is good for casuals, but bad for 100% speedrunners because every little cutscene of adding to the notebook really adds up.
This is a long comment, but hopefully this gives you the info you need to decide whether you want to play this game and which version.

I think this is one of the problems of the BotW story. Ganon doesn't know you. He doesn't even know that you exist. He's just some powerful evil force. The best thing about OoT Ganondorf was that he was this very evil, powerful force, but he was also very intimate and real and personal. He was always one step ahead of you, watching everything you do, popping up to pull the rug out from under you. It makes the final battle so awesome because he knows you're coming, and he WANTS you to storm the castle and challenge him. So awesome.

    • @bottasegreta
      @bottasegreta 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@OMEGGA I hear what you're saying. I was really just speaking to the anti-climactic feeling of the calamity ganon fight that a lot of people felt. For a lot of players by the time you get to calamity ganon you are basically OP, and you've probably completed the divine beasts, so CG is going to be a pushover. I think that would actually be ok, if you had some kind of relationship with CG. If he basically did what Ganondorf did and said "come and get me" then it would be satisfying to show up and throw it in his face. But as it is, we just sort of show up and squash him. It's just sort of boring. Know what I mean? It's ok for a boss to be easy (look at Demon's Souls: most of the big bosses are pushovers on purpose because it's part of the narrative) but you have to square that with plot. That's all.

This video basically explains why I love this game (or at least the story/theming, the gameplay is awesome, too) and why I still consider it my favorite Zelda game. Majora's Mask is a great game, but I never felt like the theming consistently outclassed Ocarina of Time's. It was a good continuation and a very good game with a good story, but I feel like it's just that: a continuation. It added to a masterpiece but wouldn't have been quite as heralded without it's big brother (for good reason).
That aside, can Zelda fans please let people enjoy what games they please. I love Majora's Mask, but I just to like Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, etc. more. And that is okay.
I won't argue with you if you say MM is better than OoT. The latter has many flaws and I can totally see many reasons why MM would rank higher for you. But don't belittle me for preferring the 'normie' game as James put it.
We ought to appreciate the Zelda series as a whole because even the worst games have ambition and aren't afraid to say, "Fuck the rules."

@@thefrubblewarrior4678 lol you dont have to be endlessly praising OoT. I do get what you're saying, i think that OoT--like any game, is player determinate. The amount of time you spend in it is generally equally rewarded. OoT almost never makes you interact with the cast of characters outside of their story beats, but i think where the splendor comes from is the building of all these seemingly minor characters that evolve naturally with the rest of the story into a major force. I would argue that Breath of the Wild doesn't do near enough to capture that same vibe, mainly because in Breath of the Wild, not only are you alone for all of the game (until the champions you freed help you with ganon and Zelda reappears), the champions themselves, with the exception of Mipha are not fleshed out at all, and even are kinda annoying in Revali's case. The rest of the game world is inhabited with good npcs but they are only memorable by either what gameplay they offer you or how they treat you as the Hylian Champion. The Zora for example have memorable NPCs because some are literal childhood friends of yours, and others actually hate you. Compare those guys to anyone in Gerudo Village, and you have a severe disparity in writing quality, where in Gerudo, the only interesting NPC is the teenaged queen who can see through your disguise as a lady. On the other hand, i think the story around Zelda herself is absolutely brilliant and better than almost any other zelda game.

Another theme in OOT's OST that I find extremely impactful but I feel often gets overlooked is the final Ganon battle theme. It has this enormous sense of.. finality. The sense of dread that accompanies the conclusion of your life's purpose, what your whole life has been leading up to, and even if you do manage to pull through and emerge victorious, you will never be the same again, you will be tainted and scarred and empty forever. It hits me like a truck every time I hear it.
Excellent video! I always appreciated the narrative of this game but I never realized just how polished and interconnected OOT's narrative and gameplay actually were... very interesting.

Thanks for this video. You've helped me realise just why I've loved this game so much all these years.

I wasn’t around in 1998, but I was around for games like Wind Waker and future games. But holy shit, 20 years have passed since then?! Me personally, I would always start this game but never actually finish it. I should do that.

I just realized that OOT and Infinity War/Endgame have the same general story, structure and even some plot points.

This game was the best experience I had with a videogame as a child. It made me laugh, cry, got scared, excited and really emotional during some moments. I just loved visiting the temple of Time and listening to that amazing chant. I loved visiting Zelda in her castle and imagining I was telling her about the adventures I had during the journey. I loved going to Lon Lon Ranch and just enjoy the layed back ambience. Zora's Domain is just (chef's kiss). Thank you so much for sharing, I love TLOZ OOT. Forever my most beloved game ever ❤

I’ve never found someone with the exact same views on Zelda as me ocarina is time is amazing and is probably still my second favourite Zelda the stories it tells are just amazing and I still get goose bumps every time I here the opening but Majora mask is just... the best seeing the very real effects of the moon on every character is amazing they all have schedules family’s hopes dreams but the moon is in the way above all that though I think Majora mask effects me because of the simple fact that you can’t save everyone

@@thefrubblewarrior4678 OOOOOOOO I AGREE SO MUCH. I always tried to play oot as a kid and having the patience that a below 7 year old has I could never get past the cavren BUT, now I'm playing it again (after having beaten SS, BOTW WW and am currently playing MM) I still just cant get myself to care enough to beat the rest. I get that this is a huge game for so many people, everyone in my family adores it, and I enjoy watching it, but I cant enjoy playing it. BOTW just made me feel like I was breathing in the wild and age of calamity made playing the story parts so meaningful. Skyward sword is "hand holdy' enough that if I didn't feel like thinking through the game a lot I could just ask Fi (I know some people didn't like that but I did so 🤷🏽‍♀) WWs soundtrack, nothing else needed. And Majoras mask makes me care in a way oot just doesn't. sorry for the rant lmao this is just rambling so, uh, sorry if it doesn't make sense

This sure is one of the best Videos I’ve ever watched. It completely summarizes the greatness of this monumental Game in 20 Minutes.

Bro. I started watching you Bc of your film reviews and essays and I had no idea you were such a big Zelda fan, as am I. We share the same favorite Zelda and video game of all time and I love majoras mask almost as much as I love abbey road. And I think it’s amazing the way you described it in your top 5 3D Zelda games. Thank you for trying to put its beauty into words
