      It's a special romhack made with love and quality that bridges the brief gap between Ocarina and Majora where link searches for Navi after she left , it cleverly captures the transitional mood between the 2 games and is about 1/4 size of majoras main quest .
      The soundtrack is also beautiful check it out

      Gonna be honest, one of the only criticism is more of just a peculiar thing with the video. It looks like it’s a little bit squished. Was that done intentionally, or is it an odd mistake. I’m genuinely just curious lol.

    For me one of the saddest a parts of the game is definitely Cremia and Romani’s quests. An older sister essentially trying to keep her younger sister’s childhood innocence for 3 more days before the world comes to an end. Even going to the extent of feeding her an alcoholic milk based beverage to do so. All this from a game that is practically rated E for everyone. This game truly is something else.

    The reason the game hits the way it does is because how the development team behind the game was being treated and such at the time. There was a interview about the game's development and the game itself is the embodiment of the things they had to go through and on such a tight schedule set by Nintendo some of them would have lost their jobs or so if they didn't reach it. This game isn't just a masterpiece and a work of art. It's a collective of all their grief, stress, and pressure they had went through throughout the entire development of the game.

    Majora's Mask has always been my favorite, not just my favorite game from the Zelda series, but my favorite of all time. From the more realistic presentation of the story via the looming threat of the moon overhead, to the catchy songs that can still pull of a sad melody during the right moments, or the excellent design choices surrounding the leadups to each dungeon and the way each dungeon makes use of a transformation mask, this game complements everything Ocarina of Time did well on and then adds on to that even further. Features like choosing to opt for a song that allows you to warp to owl statue's signifying places you've already visited on the map and featuring a mask that lets you sink underwater on-the-fly, and a mask that allows for fast ground travel, feels like smart and thought out game design, especially if you compare it to Ocarina of Time. I especially like seeing how much more thought and care went into the game's characters and their own story arcs which you experience through side quests. Collecting the masks in Majora's Mask, ironically, is one of the most fun side quests to do outside of the main adventure, with the game even giving you a badass reward for getting all the masks. I especially like the stories behind each of the transformation masks. They really help to exemplify the game's overall darker tone with how those masks are obtained by healing the souls of creatures that were ultimately cursed by the side effects of what Majora's Mask did to them. I really doubt there will be another game from the Zelda series with as much thought put into it's gameplay, story, it's characters as individual people rather than NPC's, and it's overarching themes for reasons like these. If that's the case, then this will forever live on as my favorite video game ever made!

      @BruceShankle ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@americansantacruz6080 I love OoT too. But MM improved on OoT in more ways than one and was generally a lot more interesting. Neither MM or OoT is probably the greatest video game, Majora's Mask just happens to be my favorite. The things people called "the greatest" back several years ago, now looks primitive by today's times. What's the best and what's not is a subjective matter anyways. But despite how anyone else feels, Majora's Mask will always be my favorite.

    • @cashblaster3475
      @cashblaster3475 ปีที่แล้ว

      MM and OoT are amazing but MM really transcends most video games. OoT is the Quintessential coming of age heroes tale. MM is a game that tries to explain the relationship between Time, Death and Love. It’s really unbelievable how good it is, even in retrospect.

    Of all the tragic stories in Majora’s Mask I feel the butler gets overlooked as likely the saddest. He’s really the only one who gets no kind of closure or resolution. Tons of the storylines are sad, but have some type of catharsis when you finish the quest/storyline. Kafei finds out Anju still loves him, Lulu finds her voice and has her children, when Snowhead thaws the Elder’s son is happy and goes to the races etc etc. I’m sure the poisoned water wasn’t desirable to the Deku, but it didn’t seem to be hurting their area. It’s not the butler’s daughter who is missing. In the end he’s the only one who is truly left with nothing.

    The thing that I will always love about Majora's Mask is that is a wonderful place to explore some very difficult topics while always emphasising the Light in the stories at the end. I would even say that it's perfect for children in that way, after watching a video on why it's good that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish scares them. And I think that is where my completionist streak started, to be honest. There is so much melancholy yet Light in this game that I wanted to see the full, happy credits. Which is another very powerful thing about this game. The credits show you what you have done and how everything continues. Life goes on and gets better, no matter how dark it is now. I'm rambling, but I absolutely adore this game to bits. And no matter how good Tears of the Kingdom is, I don't expect it to topple Majora's Mask on my list. Not with all the importance it has in my life.

      I'm sorry, what the fuck? Majora's Mask being perfect for children, and comparing it to The Last Wish? Are you fucking serious? Do you have some sort of problem? Most kids, even most TEENS shouldn't be exposed to the kind of shit Majora's Mask has going on in it. They don't need to have nightmares for the rest of their fucking lives.

    I like to separate the zelda games between the 'hyrule/triforce' games and the 'other games'-- In that vein, link's awakening and majora's mask, the 'other games,' are games that deal with things other than saving the world. while link's awakening is a about letting go of dreams and facing reality, majora's mask is a bit letting go of grief and anger, and being able to overcome pain. they are more than just stories about power and wisdom, they are mostly stories about courage. :D

    I really hope you read this because I've commented on this for so many years and I really hope I'm not just going crazy. I read an article saying that the reason Majora's Mask was so alienated from the series was because one of the creators (apparently not Miyamoto) had his wife taken from him due to cancer. This title was literally just reused assets, not intended for a release but was compelled to show (which, by the way, the article never mentioned a name) for some distinct reason. It's why a lot of the mechanics were a bit off. For example, how when you meet the owl for the first time in the swamp or when you use the Deku Flower to get into the Woodfall Temple. There are literally a few inches from you and the ledge. Also, how dark the theme was. Although, TLoZ has always had dark themes implemented, this particular title ended up being the darkest of them all. It would make sense as to why this game was created. A grieving developer taking his anguish on a title he was familiar with whilst using already created assets, as a sort of outlet but, was either persuaded to show his project to the higher-ups or somehow knew he was onto something legendary (no pun intended.) It ended up becoming a cult classic for Zelda lovers everywhere. All of this I read on that article that, truthfully, I wish I could find. I haven't been able to confirm if this is true or not but, in my head, it all makes sense. I just hope some hardcore Zelda fan, like you, proves me right and actually shows me the article I once saw to put my mind at ease...

    The audio level issues from the previous video are more apparent in this video than the last one. To be specific, the game audio is too high and your mic is also a bit low, like at 2:20.
    The only other thing I could really say is that presentation-wise, there's still something missing that makes it your own. Right now it gives off a "student presenting to the class and reading the script word for word" kinda feel.
    I consumed this video as pure audio, so I don't really have much to say about visuals. But from the brief skim through, the clips you chose are really good and convey the topics they're associated with really well.

    Really great video! majora's mask is still my favorite zelda game. I do wish you didn't include the 5 stages of grief piece though. It's a crazy fan theory that is proven to be wrong. Shigeru Miyamoto stated in an interview if you thought the game was about the five stages of grief then you're playing the game wrong. Your commentary on the Gorons and Zoras pretty much covers why it doesn't work.

    This is the first video that was recommended to me by you and I enjoyed it a lot! I had some thoughts about some tweaks you could make to make it easier for the consumer side to watch. I'm by no means a video editor or anything, it's just things I noticed, that might be completely wrong, but thought I'd mention them as it might help a little bit!
    First I'm assuming this was edited in a number of sessions? The way the video was edited for the final day section, in comparison to the first day section for example seemed different. The way you'd edited for the last day, where you had the game sounds or edited bgm quietly as you voiced over, and then the clip that reflects what you were talking about at appropriate volume was much easier to understand your points and follow the script. The first day was a little difficult to follow as the game volume and the voiceover volumes were similar, and it was really easy to get distracted by the game sounds, making me miss what you'd said at points. Bgm is good to add emotion and flow to a video, but sound effects I think only distract unless they're in to emphasise a point or for comedic purposes. Some did actually work in the video so I think it's deciding where to keep them and where to omit SFX.
    I think some parts of the script felt a little long - when giving examples of different reactions to the moon falling for example, each example was given as a sentence followed by footage of roughly equal lengths. I think this disrupted the rhythm of the video a bit, as it was hard to follow the different examples you were raising as they were each being given full explanations with long footage, rather than direct short comparisons to support the point you were making. I think something you especially want to highlight, giving longer footage is good, but otherwise I think it could have been shortened to give more movement and flow to the video. This kind of goes back to how you edited the final part compared to the first part again though. I think it's about editing to really hone in the point you want to highlight.
    (I often watch hour long video essays btw so there's nothing wrong with the length of the video or what was being said, I honestly think it's just editing.)
    My favourite part of the video was when you started talking about the 5 step of grief, and I felt you could have talked maybe even more about this. Or make it the overarching "hidden topic" of the video which as you said give it that melancholic feeling. The side quest examples you talked about fitted into it as well and it really gave me a different perspective. (Edit is adding this part I forgot to mention!)
    As the video moved along the video was much more enjoyable to watch, which is a shame as I think some people may have clicked off by that point :(
    I imagine editing and finding your rhythm for your videos is going to take time and practice though. Idk if you already do, but it might help to get an unbiased opinion from someone when you've got your draft as well to see where they think it went on a bit, or somewhere wasn't clear. If they could give you specific points it could help.
    Anyway! You've earned a subscriber and good luck with future videos if you decide to keep going with them. I love Zelda content! Very excited for TotK too!

      Thanks a lot man! To answer your questions, I probably took about two weeks to edit this video so yeah there were a lot of sessions. The audio mixing has been brought up a few times already but nothing concerning the in-game sound effects so I appreciate you bringing that to my attention. And yeah, I still consider myself as starting out with this type of content since I've only completed two of these so far, but helpful responses like these really help with pinpointing what I can work on and improve upon with later projects. Thanks for the sub and your comment, stuff like this means a lot!

    This video is so well made. They way you go about things proves that this game is in a league of its own. BoTW stands no chance in being top 3 at all. It isn't the open world that makes a Zelda game good. It's the characters and their stories. Majora's Mask conveys that better than anything.

    Looking at some of these comments, it looks like you might be looking for constructive criticism? I may not make videos myself, but I do watch a lot of videos and I think I can point out a few things that might help.
    In the opening the game/music audio is too loud compared to your voice. You are still perfectly audible but the music volume makes it hard to listen to. And another thing about the opening is your timing was a bit off. It'd probably be more impactful if you could have timed the ending of your opening speech with the music better; instead of stopping mid musical movement you could have tried to push or shave a few more seconds and stopped at either 1:17 or at 1:26. It is at those two points where the music adds in a new, discordant instrument and would have been much better times to let the music take over.
    Moving onto the video edits, some of the cuts feel very abrupt (like the one at 2:26) while other times it feels like you linger on a shot too long without commentary. You might consider not having lengthy periods of dead air with just the game playing unless you are using it to illustrate a point. Doing so in the story summary feels like a waste of time since seeing the footage alone isn't really adding anything to the segment. Instead, you could have the video fade out as your voice does at the end of the sentence or segment so both can fade back in on the next part.
    The cut at 2:42 is particularly great since the visuals match with your voice and it isn't immediately obvious that you removed several shots from the game footage.
    Immediately after, I really like you timing the footage of the door closing on Link and Tatl. That pause felt really good and it doesn't feel like you are lingering on it for too long. But I'd have probably moved your next voice line up a few seconds because the moment after the door closes where Tael gets the speech bubble feels like dead air again.
    The very next part where you fade your voice and the audio into the twisted hallway is excellent by the way. The footage and audio are nicely synced up and the game footage is striking enough to work without commentary over it. My one criticism is that you should have maybe dropped the audio of the game when you started speaking since the game audio was playing a particularly loud sound effect.
    In fact, if I remember correctly I think the background audio should be about 40%-60% of your voice's audio while moments you want the voice to fall away and to instead have the background audio take center stage it should be 80% of your voice's audio. Don't quote me on that, it's been a long time since I last did any editing work. I'll just say that if the your voice audio is at the proper volume level, the game audio that plays behind your voice should be lower while scenes without your voice should be nearly at the same volume level as your voice.
    I could keep going on and on for the entire video but I think I'd like to just enjoy watching it now instead of going back to my film classes. I hope I didn't come off too mean or condescending here. I think you have a great talent for this but you just don't have the experience to get all the timings right. You've got several that feel very good while others linger for too long or have weird, dead moments.

    • @hypernightslash
      @hypernightslash  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the feedback! Watching back some of the moments you listed I agree with your points and do feel as though I can improve with making sure there aren't unnecessary dead spots and making sure the audio levels are balanced out correctly. Gonna keep these in mind when editing the next video to make sure the quality and pacing is better, thanks again!

    My theory is that termina is the afterlife and link dies when he falls down that hole. Skull kid was probably killed by the power of the mask, and that’s why he suddenly has powers when he is in termina. So the representations of grief really is spot on.

  • @lucpelletier

    Favourite game of mine. Reminds me of a quote from Night In The Woods "I believe in a world that doesn't care and in people who do."
    The world in MM is so cold, heartless and dreadful. Left to their own devices, the people of Termina have no hope or chance. Everything Link does in the game is give them compassion and humanity, and it saves them. There is no heroic, epic journey that focuses quite like that on helping each other instead of just killing monsters.
    It's a game that just makes you a better person. It's so hard to make someone understand if they haven't played.

  • @phoboszelus

    Audio balance is a bit off. Music is pretty loud compared to your voice. Maybe have it faded in the back some more. The music doesn't need to be extremely present when you are talking.
