12:26 *The Religious Subtext of Gyromite* Author: Akfamilyhome Gyromite is a game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985. As a game release that primarily targets the American market, it is noteworthy that while Nintendo's American subsidiary imposes strict rules prohibiting the depiction of religion, among other types of content considered to be non-family-friendly, the usage of the R.O.B the Robot peripheral in conjunction with the game appears to nonetheless provide hints of religious references. Within the game world, the player assumes control of Professor Hector, whose path is blocked by a colored gate immediately at the beginning of the first level. As the professor character can only assume two degrees of movement on a 2D plane (walking to the left and walking to the right), it can be presumed that he is essentially trapped in an enclosed space. To escape, he must rely on the help of R.O.B the Robot, an entity that itself is not present in the game world, but instead existing in the real world alongside the player, influencing the outcome of the game through manipulating the controller. Generally, player characters in a video game are not aware of the existence of manipulation by a player in the real world, with the only exceptions being fourth wall breaks in the dialogue for comedic effect. In Super Paper Mario (2007), the in-game character Bestovious refers to the real-world player as "the great being that watches us". However, this dialogue is not essential for the progression of the game plot or gameplay. In comparison, during a game of Gyromite, the professor turns to face the screen directly, as if looking outside of the boundaries of the in-game universe and towards R.O.B the Robot for assistance. The player, in turn, is given control of R.O.B. The hierarchy of the player issuing commands to R.O.B the Robot, which in turn influences the game world by manipulating the second controller is reminiscent of those seen in other religions, similar to how God issues commands dude forget the Scott The Woz cameo i'm way more interested in this thesis being finished in the future
Fun fact: the Famicom’s azuki red was partly chosen because at the time, that color of plastic was cheaper than others. Terrific video, and I’m impressed by the first half of your written thesis on player/game character interaction!
I also adore the famicom color scheme over the NES color scheme, I've never seen it as "toy like" more so as a elegant system like the game and watch. Rob nowadays its definitely more of a figurine to collect since on its own it has a really appealing design outside of its functionality.
@@Grane1234 that could be a feature, a built in vacuum, my idea was essentially the same model but bigger, smash size at least, it would fight back in a similar manner but without all the lasers (best be at least somewhat realistic) you know a self defense protocol if struck by someone unregistered as a friend, it could also move and pick up stuff or bring you something if requested, can be voice commanded, gyroscopically stable, perfect for rough terrain and carrying something fragile (or highly volatile) along with hands that can switch between Gyromite bumpers and Stack Up claws, sensors on the inside of the hands telling R.O.B. how soft or hard to hold on to an object without breaking it, strong enough to lift 500 pounds and can still play Gyromite and Stack Up only much more efficiently then before, and perhaps even have an app for your phone or Nintendo Switch that would act like a remote control and a way to program R.O.B. to do more advanced things or help it understand and even identify whether or not something is poisonous to humans and would also come with an emergency failsafe shutdown, turning him off incase something... terrible happens. Sorry if this is long lol.
Imagine if people made a mk 2 version that was bigger, smash size or 4-5ft to be precise, could still play Gyromite and Stack Up only much more efficiently then before, could also play other games and even be given commands like ROB attack, find this, or clean.
I wonder if it would be possible to inject Gyromite into the Wii Virtual Console to be able to play with ROB on the Wii. Edit: Since you can plug a Wii into a CRT, after all.
So my family computer robot does not raise his arms when he is turned on, and moves to his right. Would you be interested in making a tutorial on exactly how you fixed his gears?
Quiet he is not, "Is someone making fresh coffee?". In hindsight I mostly wish he were more robot and less video game because he really can't play for crap.
ended up with a complete rob collection for cheap by unconventional means, found him with his complete gyro set in a dysfunctional but repairable state for 100, already had the gyromite cart because of the famicom adapter and ended up getting (robot block/block set) because i can play famicom games and i refuse to pay that much for a glorified remote control software
What is it about the Japanese market that they're not so uptight about asking prices. Whereas America Retro markets they overprice a badly condition game. And if theres a box and manual, boy, that price skyrockets.
They made a game about the robot from Smash?!
Uhh are you stupid? Everyone knows ROB is from Mario Kart DS not smash bros
Everyone?
I didn't 🤷
Wasn't it in a kirbo game on SNES that I forgeten the name of.

@bythe_eldergods! Is that a reference to him eating cereal on Phub, of all things.

I'm so happy seeing Scott in other videos that aren't his, it's always so funny
9:14 love the cameo with the title not saying who it is

Can’t wait for the “Religious Subtext Gigaleak”
ROB is Jesus confirmed
R.O.B = Religious Object Boi, or something I dunno
“Oh my God, I meet Jesus and a Target employee in the same week!”
"Smash Bros is the most ambitious crossover ever" yeah okay but how about Akfamilyhome X Scott the Woz?

no, that color was just a former president yamauchi's favorite color

i like how you made a 3d printed hand for rob its like mgsV the phantom pain
I wonder if someone has modded a ROB to have quieter and/or faster motors.
It'd be so cool if they released a modern R.O.B. with modern controllers and contraptions in mind on the Switch.
I was thinking that it could also help around the house or even defend it if need be.

Also wow! Scot’s here what a nice surprise
Petition for ROB 2 to exist!
a speed toggle would make a lot of sense. this reminds me of snail bob in fact and that had a way to make him go faster
The sound it makes when moving are really relaxing
Rob seemed pretty revolutionary at the time .
It's my headcanon that this video is just AVGN's ROB episode but in a parallel universe
R.O.B. may be a slow dumb robot but he's OUR slow dumb robot.
Great video! I wonder when you will talk about the Satellaview though, I don’t know that much about it
